Bourbons That Are Worth OVERPAYING For!

- Sometimes you just gotta pay a little more thanks to so many stores overcharging for Bourbon. There are a few bottles that Dan and I will pay over MSRP for on just because of how much we like them though. What are those bottles?

Allocated bottles are sitting on the shelves in my local shops for months. The bubble hasn’t burst yet but I think we’re past the peak of the bourbon boom.
Found the Angels Envy a few dollars under retail yesterday, can't wait to get into it now!
thank you for doing advent this year! im really looking forward to it!
A local shop just had a barrel pick Stagg. At 80 bucks a piece , they are worth every penny.
Heck, I've paid 200 for Stagg and sipped it with a smile
Stagg Jr and Taylor Barrel Proof are the only two buffalo trace bottles I’d buy for $200 and be incredibly happy!
Barrell is so hit or miss for me. And when it is a miss, it's frustrating because of how expensive it is.
This. I got a barrel proof Barrell and all I taste is smokey oak. Feels like it needs to be aged more.
Their Amburana finish is arguably the best on the market though. It has that spicy, burnt marshmallow notes you get from an Amburana finish without the smack in the face because it’s blended down.
@@Chase_AM- Fair enough. They have some good whiskeys. To my palate, they also have some misses. Vatted Malt and Vantage come to mind. And they are awfully expensive to be putting out anything but great whiskey.
Love seeing all those Blue Run bottles in the background!
Jack single barrel rye is amazing. Definitely a buy if you see it anywhere.
It sits on shelves here whenever I finish a bottle I buy another 😊
Agree - it's just a VERY high proof point. Definitely not something you can just start raw with in a tasting.
Assume you mean the JD single barrel barrel proof rye. Agree, it's a spicy one but delicious. I like the regular JD single barrel rye as well tho.
The reason you can find the Angel's Envy cask strength fairly easily is because AE is a VERY polarizing whisky. People either love it or hate it, and that's at the regular bottle ABV and price. If you have so many people who don't like it at $40, they definitely aren't going to like the better version at $250. Keep up the good work.
Great list. I have a couple of those bottles, but I'm missing several as well. Love "buyer of all the golf clubs." That was definitely me last year. When are we getting a golf video?!
I brought a $25 courtesy of the US Navy commissary home to Maryland from family Thanksgiving vacation as a gift. I was at Dawson's tiday a picked up a Trailblazer and a Saganore Rye (Ravens edition) and also look forward to the Advent adventures. Given the bourbons and ryes on the shelves behind you not mentioned, I vote false on a couple. Sagamore double barrel rye for example. Observant 1
Jack Daniels Barrel Proof Rye was hard to find in Texas for a while, but I see them sitting on shelves now for MSRP
Those jack bottles are the best ive gotten this year aside from finally get a stagg jr 22b. Jack never disappoints with their upper end stuff
23b is 100 times better than 22b imo. Both are phenomenal, but please search out 23b, you will not be disappointed.
Neat still has WT12! It's where I got and will continue to get my WT12. Love that bottle
Love the list! Especially the jack daniels.
The main store i go to sells Stagg for $60-$69 if it's a split case when they get it. The whiskey associate told me show up on Tuesday and Friday when we get our truck in to get first dibs on allocated item's
The EHT SB is one of my favorites. If I could find it more regular, it would 100% be my daily sipper.
There's 2 Barrell Amburana sitting on the shelf at my local spot right now, priced at $84.99 and I can't pull the trigger. Same went for the Joseph Magnus pick they had. There just aren't enough people saying that it is and always is good for me to drop a hundo on a bottle.
Thanks, always appreciate this content
Can’t wait to read the comments on this one 😅
I only pay MSRP dorks living in sadness convincing themselves rarebreed is the 🐐
Oh ya, all the NO WHISKEY IS WORTH THAT / EVAN WILLIAMS BIB IS THE GREATEST WHISKEY EVER warriors will come out 😆😆😆😆
I’m not a rye guy. I love that jack daniels rye. I bought a back up and a back up to my back up paid 70 plus tax here in Michigan.
Found a Bardstown Origin White label and Elijah Craig Toasted at an abc store for msrp today, looking forward to first poors, pretty excited
On that white origin, get past the neck and it opens up. First few sips I was hugely disappointed
I liked both in the Bardstown Origin series (white label and black label BiB). EC toasted was nice too IMO.
I was sitting watching this a while back sippin on Old Forester 1910 which I got at Total Wine for $61. Phenomenal
Still have not seen any more Penelope Rio in the wild. Bought a bought a bottle of it early this year and hammered through it, not knowing what it was....even though I LOVED it.
I love when you say spoiler alert after you’ve said the statement that spoiled the video! LMAO you both are still the best whiskey videos out there!!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.....Cheers!
I just got the 2024 Woodford Batch Proof. It’s really nice!
100% Right on the Amburana finished Barrell. That is EASILY the best Amburana finished whiskey I have tasted.
... im very new in the bourbon travels.
Just did a blind test between four roses small batch, fr small batch select, michters bourbon and jack daniels bonded and somehow the bonded won
It was the only one that i felt had an interesting flavor/ burn reward.
The others were mostly burn...
I must be doing something wrong lol
On the other hand, the cheapest bottle being the winner is good for me 💰
Give it a little time. Your pallet will change and adjust. Sometimes, it will change seasonally. The burn will lessen over time. I usually drink higher proof stuff because they present more flavors.
I hear you on EHT SiB, but they are a SiB. I've had some that aren't good at all. I think it may just be the luck of the draw of where you're getting them. I personally, based on my experience, pick other mashbill 2s for consistencys sake
If you’re anywhere near Lynchburg, you can get the SBBP Rye at retail. I’m not a huge rye fan, but it is excellent. May have to try the amburana Barrell - saw it for retail locally. Happy Turkey Day!
You can get it just about anywhere these days. Literally every store I've been to in NC has it now.
Just bought a JD SBBP Rye at 140.2. Very good.
I just tried the JD single barrel barrel proof rye tonight, the best rye I've ever tasted by far.
I hear a LOT of good about that bottle.
I love Rye’s… I have Sagamore Rye, Elijah Craig Rye, Old Forester Rye, Russell’s Rye, high west Rye, Michter’s Rye, Jim Beam Rye, Traverse city Rye, and Wild Turkey Rye, but I’m yet to taste the Jack Daniel’s single barrel Rye.
@@mjolnir9855 I highly recommend it. Also the JD bonded rye is good.
@@mjolnir9855 when you find them, buy and also buy a back up!
Yes
@@mjolnir9855 I think it will blow them away. I bought the 136 proof it is good
I got my WT12 from neat
That's funny I just got my WT12 from Neat in Louisville. Didn't realize they were well known enough to get a shoutout from you guys.
Yea that place is awesome!
Did you guys get any of the Dragon's Milk Toasted release from last week? They had a Sherry finish that was amazing
It's amazing
So excited for BadVent! 🔥
What website were you guys talking about at 6:10?
Found a Barrell Amburana for 95 tax included. Stoked
amburana being on the list shocks me. Myself and everyone I have poured it for absolutely hated it. It smells like a yankee candle on the neck pour. It tastes like cinnamon and vanilla candle.
Amburana is definitely a love or hate thing. Sean hates it.
Can not get Highwest shipped to Texas, unfortunately.
C'mon advent, looking forward to yet another vampire-asswhooping...
ps - picked up a store pick JDSBBPR a few weeks back on a whim since I don't drink a lot of rye but after seeing this I'm looking forward to cracking that bottle open...
Jack really did start pumping out quality whiskies within the past few years. SBBP is amazing. Still haven’t found a rye though.
I got one of the SBBP ryes two days ago. I should have bought 2.
@davidchandler9420 I thought the same thing after I cracked mine....haven't seen any more since then too. So so so good!
I bought a Booker's Mighty Fine Batch 2 weeks ago for $99. Was not impressed at all other than the amazing peanut butter profile but has an extreme dry finnish.
You're paying for the box.
@@tsubakichan The MSRP is right around $99
@@mozambique7930 Right. For a 6-7 year old bourbon from Jim Beam distillery. Why wouldn't you just get a Knob Creek pick at similar proof, nearly half the cost, and generally 9-10 years in age if not more?
@@tsubakichan Booker's is uncut and unfiltered for a reason unlike any Knob Creek. The 12 year Knob Creek in my area is well over $175
@@mozambique7930 KC12 I got for $50, but I think MSRP is 60. But to your point, it's 100 proof. KC Single Barrel Store Picks are generally 9 - 15 years for $55 and 120 proof. Yes, you can say Bookers is truly barrel proof at 123/124.whatever. If that matters so much to you, spend the extra $50. But it sounds to me like you never tried a KCSB Store Pick. So far, it's the best bourbon I've ever tasted.
Great to see you two going all fan boy on stuff, LOL.
Hehe thanks
Ok so I’m trying to find a bourbon bottle I had a cup of it at an even in sac was smooth bottle had a single feather on it & it was a square bottle
Have any of y’all ever had a antique 107 that tasted like butter scotch
New Rio supposedly dropping now?
Sorry but there is NO WAY any bottle of bourbon/whiskey is worth overpaying for. There are too many good to great reasonably price bottles available.
And alot of those bottles are very stereotypical and the same. I would be willing to pay more for something unique and different.
While i agree, that changes based on who you ask and by how much.
I kind of refuse to pay anything over MSRP for any item i want not just booze. I had to deal with outrageous scalping etc with things like PC graphic cards since before the pandemic. Nothing makes me happier knowing that eventually it will be sitting on the shelf with excess stock and probably discounted. I will wait. Some people like waiting in lines or the thrill of winning a raffle to buy $40-90 MSRP bottles for a x times markup and that is their bourbon journey. It Isn't for me.
I live in ky and when I found EH Taylor single barrel they wanted over 200 no thanks!!!
Jack Daniels has been the comeback kid the past few years.
michters 10 is the third low proof bottle
I find it kinda funny that multiple bottles on this list i personally would strongly say arent worth msrp, let alone more. Always interesting how much taste varies
Well I disagree about the EHT single but like the WT12 Seanpire is spot on idk...everyone's different Bless ups Aidan
@@mojo88bassandbourbon72 wt 12 isnt available in the us, so over 100 is pretty reasonable from how i see it. Plus its great whiskey
Yeah can guarantee as I went on a tour a month ago that you could not buy a Cellar Aged at the distillery afterward. Lady at the register looked offended when I asked about it.
Nah you had to be there first thing in the morning. Had several friends wait in the mornings to get them.
I paid secondary prices at hometown liquor store to get coy hill and pretty much secondary for single barrel barrel proof rye limited release from a large EU retailer but also got the regular at the same time for around 120. Also got wild turkey 151 12 year from same said retailer. All some of my best American style whiskies and no regrets for overpaying to get these.
Any reputable, legit and reasonably priced websites to buy hard to find bourbons?
Ok, help a brother out. what online retailer can I go to to get the wild turkey 12 year for $150?
Woodencork is close
It’s $180 with tax and $40 for shipping at that site. Not worth it at all at that price.
EH Taylor Single Barrels only exist at like $200+ for me in California which is a huge bummer.
same in WA like 175+ where I am
Our local Sam’s club had a pallet full of them for retail last month $80. Score. I bought more than one.
What do you expect in a democrat run, tax you to death state? California is also working on doubling the alcohol tax, plus adding 3 more vice taxes on it. Within a couple of years, you will be paying $250-300 for a bottle of Evan Williams. And just the standard cheap stuff, not even the BiB.
@@adamr9215Dude, nobody asked for your political take. Sounds like you don’t live there, so why do you have such strong feelings?
Unicorn auctions is worth a shot
Bottles you'd pay over (not secondary), coming from guys with a shelf full of Blue Run 😂
I want one of your 13th colony double oaks 😂
I live in one of the distribution states and have never seen it on the shelves. I've even been to Georgia hunting it, starting with last year's batch. If you happen across the discontinued Sourmash from 13th Colony grab that.
Where the hell did you find that Penelope Rio?!?! And for $100?!?!?
It’s like $300+ online and I can’t find it anywhere.
I paid too much for a Knob Creek 18, no regrats.
Let’s hype the hype. And pay more. And roll it 😂
I had the absolute worst experience with my EH Taylor single barrel. Paid 90 bucks. Like drinking a sharpie marker. Complained at my liquor store and they said 3 other people said the same thing. First EH Taylor product I didn’t like. Bad barrel I guess!
Dang I feel like that has to be so far and few between. Should write BT and see if they say anything.
Get it past the shoulder and leave it for a while.
@@SRVandDtrouble It sat for 4 months, had it well over a quarter gone. Ended up giving it to a friend that likes scotch because it tasted like Lagavulin.
Do y'all think $60 for EH Taylor Small Batch is too much?
Also y'all could do a 2XO blind. Was out looking around last week and saw all 3. Would love to know what order y'all would put them in.
I paid much more for mine, but I haven’t seen another in person yet for cheaper. I think $60 isn’t too much over retail, but i know it’s to each their own.
Example: I saw a Stagg 22A for $300, and debated on it. It was the first one I ever saw. I told myself I was coming back to the area in a week anyway, if it was still there I’d snag it. During that week, a random store had the same 22A for $150. Definitely glad I waited.
It’s all relative to what your willing to spend to try something and how rare it might be to obtain in your area.
Not terrible if you have never seen it for retail. They're $45 retail out here in the bay area....60 wouldn't make me feel too bad but I really don't think you need to pay more than 60-70
Ohio's state controlled pricing has ruined me for buying much over MSRP. That being said, l'd pay quite a bit over to get an EHT SiB or BP.
And i thought $75 was hard to pull the trigger on the barrel amburana
Someone else said the jack heritage really changes for the worse when it opens up. Do you guys feel the same?
150$ for WT12... Got mine for 75$ out the door hehe
I put in a liquor request at a local store for E.H Taylor small batch and when it came in they told me the cost was $69. Did i over pay?🤔
No retail is about 45 and secondary is about 100 so right in between, it's also more consistent than the single barrels, they can be just ok or amazing so it's a crap shoot unless its a barrel pick
If you’ve never had it, not at all. I’ve seen it marked up as high as $150 in some places. It’s a little over MSRP but I’d argue the extra $20 is worth it to try it
I always thought Jack was the college drink or the shit-mixer. But yeah. It’s phenomenal.
This is so accurate. They've hidden some of the best whiskey in the country behind old no 7
I was the same way until I tried one of the single barrel barrel proof releases. It's a great bottle and you can find them damn near everywhere
@BourbonJunkies I would have never given them a try but my local BevMo guy told me I should really give the SBBP a try, and 2 years later I compare everything to them and all I really care about finding are JD special releases and the JD SBBP Ryes
I wish that shirt said "Only Drams".
Paid $69 for my EHT SiB and I prefer the small batch over it. Glad I have one and would gladly get another to compare but idk if I’d be willing to pay over $80
Agreed
Feel the same way about the bottle that I have. Big letdown.
Rio was so lackluster for me IMO. It probably doesn't help that Starlight Cigar is by far the best amburana finished whiskey being made. Did a blind with that, a Jeppson's amburana, Rio, and a Rare Character, and Starlight won by miles
And the Amburana Rye by Starlight is even much better that the bourbon.
Only Dan’s that’s effing great.
just checked high west website and bourye is sold out...
Ugh... Well this is bad timing now
What milk is worth over paying for??? Thanks in advance. My family needs milk
Isn't E.H. Taylor mashbill #1?
what's the matter w Dan's hair??
Would love to see a blind with these bottles
Michters 10 3rd under 100
So so many great bourbons out there you are stupid to overpay for anything. Boubon is made for drinking, not collecting.
Surprised at this video title from these guys...usually its how they will barely pay $5-10 more than SRP for all the BT high end products and so on. Case in point, in another video they say EHT small batch is only worth paying up to 50 (both them), and now Sean says he'd easily pay a hundo for it. Cmon WTH
Huge difference between EHT Small Batch and Single Barrel (the one in the video is Single Barrel). Most of the buffalo trace stuff we would probably pay 20-30 over MSRP for at the moment (which is significantly under secondary). Very dependent on if we currently have any and how hard it's been to find.
These bottles are just some of our favorites from this year that people may find on a shelf marked up and this is around how much we'd pay if we saw them.
My misunderstanding. I just recalled the video from years ago for Small Batch, and totally missed the fact you were reviewing single barrel here. Apologies. In my experience only 1 in 5 single barrels are great. What would you pay for a great pick of single barrel?@@BourbonJunkies
I act like I'm ok. But deep down i miss hearing Sean say "pouuurrrrr guesses".
Guys, please find the koval amburana. 👌
It's great.
Great choices and I’m just glad I live in a controlled state. Never pay over msrp.
Damn Kroger had those angel envy for $89 in Bardstown Kentucky ❤😂
First Happy Turkey day
None
need more tattoos
Not a fan of Barrel.
This ain't helpin' ! Damn.
Sorry... there is no bourbon worth over paying for.... all you do is encourage the scavengers. There are way to many good bourbons out there for MSRP to go chasing unicorns. I've got 3 bottles of C923 set aside... at a grand total of roughly $65 (pre-tax) each.
We got a single ECBP c923 for 100 and don't regret it. Not everyone sees things for retail. I haven't seen an ecbp at retail for two years.
Not sure what made whiskey channels think this kind of video was a good idea, but you're all wrong & you should be ashamed of yourselves.
Friends don't encourage friends to overpay.
This video is referencing bottles you'd sometimes see on shelves marked up and how much we'd pay if we saw these ones. If it's your money why the hell would I care if you think something is worth an extra $20 or not? If you don't want to, don't do it. Reality in current market is most things aren't MSRP right now.
What kind of Penelope was that
sitting here sipping on my $26 (delivered to my door) buffalo trace listening to you nerds talking about $150 bottles. HA HA HA no
You must be a blast at parties.
Please get a life, then come back to the channel😂
You pay for delivery for that?
People that would spend more than you, still respect the hell out of you for your way of enjoying whiskey. But now it's the other way around? You just sound like a hater
Congrats on being cheap. You get what you pay for, as with everything
Rio is terrible
Rio? Yeah, Rio De Janeiro ain’t all that. But Rye’s are AMAZING!
Can’t get that Rye spice from any bourbon, unless it’s a high Rye bourbon ;)
No bourbon is worth overpaying for GTFOH
