- For generations of Detroiters, the J.L. Hudson's department store in the heart of downtown was more than an incredible shopping experience, it was a landmark. Whether you went there at Christmas to see Santa, or to buy your first good suit, Hudson's was as much a part of Detroit as the auto industry. Among the many recollections people have, are the wonderful things Hudson's offered in their restaurants. The Canadian Cheese Soup was a longtime favorite on the Hudson's menu, and making it again took us back to those wonderful days on Hudson's 13th floor. This is part 1 of 2 in remembering J.L. Hudson's - in part 2 of 2 we recreate the department store's famous Maurice salad.

I have wonderful memories of my mom taking me to J L Hudson’s, we always had lunch. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

In the Twin Cities, Dayton/Hudson had their store, Dayton's.
In the oval room, a shopper could eat at linen clothed tables, fine dining. Models would walk by wearing the latest clothing. Men could take a break and relax in the smoking room.
People would dress well to go shopping at Dayton's and make a day of it.
Mary Tyler Moore (her show) tossed her hat in the air by the Minnapolis Dayton's store.
A statue of her doing so is at that cross street in downtown Minneapolis.
Dayton's is no longer in business.
I did work there in the 80's. Great experience!

I am only 56 and most of my Hudson's memories are from the Christmas display at the Northland store (scared me) but my whole family defines our Detroit upbringing by the Hudson's downtown store. In my day we only shopped the third basement!!!!!! My mother and grandmother essentially lived at the downtown store in the teens, 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's. My great-great grandmother had a stroke (and died the next day) in one of the elevators in 1893!!! I am so happy to make the soup and the salad for my siblings!!!! Thanks you guys!!!!!
Hi Doug - sounds like you have a family history with Hudson's! I remember the Northland store - that was the company's first suburban store and it was really big, although not nearly as big as the downtown flagship. Hope making some of Hudson's famous dishes brings back fun memories! Thanks for watching!
Mom would take us as kids to J L Hudson’s downtown. I remember the elevator rides with the attedants and the restaurant. Mom would have the Maurice Salad or the pot pie as her special treat. I can Romberg the cheese soup as well. Thanks fir the memories !

We had Marshall Field's in the Chicago area and I recall going to the restaurant with my mom. These stores are just a memory now.

*JL Hudson was born in England and lived in Hamilton, Ontario (Canada) before the family moved to Detroit. I guess he had an attachment to the Commonwealth.*

Oh, how I loved Hudson's. I have so many wonderful memories of being there with my mom and my sister. I don't think there was a thing on that menu that we hadn't had a hundred times, but of course, it was always Canadian Cheese soup, and Chicken pot pie. Then, of course, a Sanders hot fudge sundae. My whole family went to the Hudson's Thanksgiving Parade, and we froze our buns off hahaha. The Lone Ranger even rode my White Arab in the parade! I still remember when I was very little, going down to the huge Detroit store from Warren, and doing my Christmas shopping for my family with the "Elves" on the toy floor, all by myself. How exciting for me. I didn't know for a long time my parents had paid in advance hahaha. What joyful memories. I feel sorry that my kids missed this. Kids nowadays just don't have the special things I had growing up.

+Cavalcade of Food oh that would be great! I heard the secret ingredient to the Hudson's pot pie was dried sweet basil. The last time I made Chicken Pot pie, I tried adding a bit of basil and it did add that Hudson's flavor. P.S. I made your moms' Kapustka recipe and it was divine! I had a palm sized piece of pork butt that I put on top and added 1/4 of a head of fresh cabbage that I shredded and had to use. I Let it cook on top of the stove about 4 hours, and it was wonderful! Thanks again! 👏👍

What a wonderful homage to a great department store! I had the opportunity to visit JL Hudson's a few times when I would spend time with my aunt. It was a wonderful experience, a very beautiful store with nice people working there who were friendly.
In New York City, where I'm from, there was a department store by the name of B. Altman & Co. which was a genteel, old-world store with the Charleston Gardens restaurant.
These stores will never die as long as we remember them, talk about them, and, in your case, make foods that were served by them. Congratulations on a wonderful recipe which I am going to make ASAP as I am a die hard cheese lover. Thank you so much!

I'm going to make this with an ulterior motive. It really looks like it would make a good sauce to go over egg noodles. I've been obsessed ever since they stopped making Betty Crocker's two-step Noodles Romanoff and I'm looking for a satisfying replacement. I've tried b'jillions of recipes over the decades. We'll see.
jimsher9880 Thanks for watching! Since this is a fairly thick soup it should work well over egg noodles! If you give it a try, let us know how it turns out! It's frustrating when something you like gets discontinued...good luck!
J.L. Hudson's sounds like it was a special place, and that great memories were made there. For us in Chicago, we had Marshall Field's department store and its Oak Room for lovely, memorable dining experiences. For many, a highlight of their holiday season was to go downtown and see the window displays at Marshall Field's and then have a celebratory lunch by the enormous Christmas tree in the center of the Oak Room. Macy's has taken over ownership and it's just not quite the same. Still nice, but nothing brings back Marshall Field's. I totally get why you miss J.L. Hudson's. At least you can still taste it in a bowl of that delicious looking soup. I'm totally digging your retro kitchen, BTW.

Your memories of Marshall Field's in Chicago (I was lucky enough to have been there a couple of times and remember what a beautiful and magnificent store it was) are very similar to what us Detroiters remember about J. L. Hudson's. The window displays, the decorations at Christmas time, the dining room, not to mention the service! I made this and it is INCREDIBLE!! I won't say how much of it I ate, but I had a salad and fresh crusty bread with it. DUNK ALERT!!! LOL!! Dipping bread is DIVINE!!! Thank you so much for this wonderful recipe and all your terrific posts.

I have to admit, I didn't really realize there was cheese soup that was actually meant to be eaten as soup - I only knew of the condensed yellow goo in a can that's meant for adding into recipes. This looks so good! I want to try it with some sundried tomato breadsticks for dipping. Thank you guys for another great recipe!

I am from East Baltimore area a little east of Fells Point called Highlandtown! I will be 63 on June 26th, and when I grew up there they had wonderful bakeries, the ethnic groups wer Italian, Polish, Greek. The bakeries were owned by Poles who apprenticed in Germany, so each had there different spins! We also had a department stores downtown with 3 restaurants, plus Woolworth, Mc Crory's Kressge's etc!

.After 7 years I'm sure there have been lots of ideas of why this soup is called Canadian Cheese Soup... It's because if you add some bacon finely diced you would use Canadian Bacon. Therefore the name. I did make this same soup here in Orlando today and I noticed you didn't add bacon. When I grew up in Ohio we had a very large department store in Columbus, Ohio called Lazarus' and it had a wonderful restaurant in it. Thanks for sharing the soup recipe...
Hi Michael! I didn't add bacon to mine because Hudson's didn't have any bacon in their soup. Many years ago I was in Columbus, Ohio and I remember going to the Lazarus store there - it was beautiful! Thanks!
I have a brilliant Marshall Field's cookbook of recipes that were serviced in their famed Walnut Room. So many great memories. Mrs. Hering's Pot Pie was their signature dish.

I am originally from Hamtramck polish/Ukraine nice walking down memory lane with Kevin & Ralph. Ethnic food always a delightful & healthy. Do you remember "duck soup" my grandma specialty with potatoes, raisin, plums, carrot, & noodles. I loved it when I was young. Enjoyed your cooking! & music -- keep going.

I have a lot of catching up to do! I haven't watched the videos lately---lost my great aunt in February, and am dealing with the estate. I love this soup! My grandmother worked at Hudson's downtown in the Credit Union, and my stepmother worked at both the Westland store and downtown as a buyer of china, crystal and glass. I have this every time I go to the restaurant at Macy's Westland along with a Maurice Salad. Hope you're both well---Steve

Robertson's in downtown south bend,indiana had a resteraunt really good burgers i remember k mart had a little cafeteria as well

Guys this looks sensational! We have a local pub type restaurant here in Chattanooga that serves a soup that looks identical to this except it's a Beer cheese soup. I'm wondering if they sub beer for the stock? Anyway, it's a little warm here now, for soup, but cannot wait to make this in the fall! Are the popovers you have here the same recipe you have posted in the past? I make them frequently and love them! I also can't wait for the great stove exchange. You should entitle it "Stove Swap 2K15!" Glad to see The Cottage back open for the season! Cheers :)

Adam Bryan Thanks, Adam!! Yes, I used the popover recipe that is posted here on CoF - it's my go-to and everyone always loves them. Popovers were actually on the menu at Hudson's, so they were a natural with this meal. I like your idea about 2K15 ;-). Time permitting, we may do the stove exchange this weekend. Thanks for the memories on the Hudson's cheese soup. My mother is from Detroit and she always loved getting there cheese soup. She even made it at home like you did Kevin. She use to put hers in a bread bowl and it was wonderful. Great video today, and thanks for sharing.
