We have a Mouli in our family. As a tradition at Christmas, we have a family ranch potato recipe that rotates around to different people. The lucky chosen chef gets to go get the Mouli from Grandma's house and return it back to Grandma after the holiday.

Mom had both the chop-o-matic and veg-o-matic. Brings back some great memories of mom chopping potatoes for french fries and chopping cabbage for making vegetable soup. Mom would get out veg-o-matic during canning and use that processor over and over and over. Hers was a turquoise color. I can still hear that veg-o-matic chopping. Moms now in her 80's and myself in my 60's. I'm sure somewhere mom has her veg-o-matic put away.

Manual food processors are the norm for in restaurant prep. The tomatoes, onions, lemons, etc are delivered weekly, but sliced and diced daily for freshness. You can easily move them around to any available prep table without an electrical outlet and dunk them in a soapy sink to clean. Lots of advantages.

Hi Mike - love those commercial manual processors. I almost bought a heavy-duty French Fry cutter that mounted on the wall and then I realized I was crazy! LOL! It's nice to use things without the need of an electric cord. Thanks!

You and I might be of similar stock. When I was very young, half hour long "infomercials" were a new concept, and there was a particularly infamous one for an immersion blender where they made peanuts into peanut butter in the jar, and made strawberry whipped dessert out of skim milk. I even taped it one time to show my parents, as I was insistent that we NEEDED one of these things. One of the first things I bought when I was earning my own money was an immersion blender. 😀

My mom has and still uses the original Mouli she bought for $1.99! it is a slightly smaller than the two models the video begins with here. The legs do not fold, came with 5 blades one slicer and 4 sizes of graters/shredders. We used it to chop pecans, shred cheese, chop hard cooked eggs, make coleslaw, hash brown and scalloped potatoes.

Mom has a small Mouli grater we used to grate cheese and Granny had the Veg-O-Matic, likely a gift from my uncle, who was a gadget guru. I used both of them and they were very handy. I miss the Ronco commercials that used to come on at Christmastime with the cheesy Deck the Halls music at the end and the list of Eckerd's-Revco-Woolworth-Woolco stores. There was an entire section at Eckerd's Drug devoted to Ronco products. Thanks for showing us your processing gadget collection.

Hi Jonathan! They sure sold a lot of those gadgets! We didn't have Eckerd's here in Michigan, but we had Revco and Woolworth, and there was a chain of drugstores in Detroit called Cunningham's that also sold those Ronco products. Great memories! Thanks!

Just that easy! Just that quick! Ten pounds of julienne fries! 😂 Those TV commercials for the Veg-O-Matic still haunt me. My job was always to chop the onions with the Chop-O-Matic, 'cuz Mom didn't like to cry. I think a lot of these gadgets hark back to the old hand crank meat grinders. I still have one with 4 different blades. But i still love my 1982 Cuisinart (28 year warranty on the motor - still going strong). They don't make 'em like that anymore. I was so happy when I saw you post this video about the "magic" mouli ! I found my first one in the 1980's and have used it for years! So easy to clean and does everything so fast! I mostly make hash browns with it and grate blocks of cheese to perfection. It also makes the best coleslaw! If you are making scalloped potatoes, it is quick and easy! • @AugustMeteors
      @AugustMeteors 5 месяцев назад

You're right about the cords. Many vacuum cleaners have a reel and spring feature that winds up the cord into a housing for tidy storage. I don't think I've ever seen a small kitchen appliance made like that. I wish they were! At least for appliances that tend to stay on the counter all the time. If you had the option of letting out only as much cord as needed to plug your toaster or food processor into the closest outlet, counter clutter would be reduced. @@cavalcadeoffood

My husband picked up a Rival Kitcheneer at a yard sale many years ago (in the 90's) and proudly brought it home for me to use. Unfortunately, the bottom rubber feet were missing so using it was quite difficult. I think I used the meat grinder attachment a few times and that's all. Pretty sure it's still packed away in my attic somewhere.

Hi acaliaaidras - those rubber feet get brittle over time and either crack and fall off or become so hard they no longer create the suction to adhere to the counter. I think you can get new ones online - they aren't exactly like the original but they will work. Thanks!

Hi Diana! I think they still made some kind of Mouli today. Sounds like you are famous for your cole slaw! Thanks!

I liked your "huckster" routine. My mom had both the chop-o-matic and the veg-o-matic. I don't really remember her using either one though. I use an electric processor from time to time. I don't like washing dishes or chopping veg, so yeah it's a bit of a dilemma in which way to go.

Hi Scooter! From the looks of some of the gadgets I have, whoever bought them never used them either. It's always a toss-up whether to just use a knife or get out a gadget. Thanks!

I bought the chop o magic in the 90s. The blades were not sharp and you could only put in little bits at a time. Pain to clean. Faster with a knife and board. Waste of money. However, I was told they were actually good when they first came out.

Hi Kevin! Such a fun video remembering all these vintage food processors. I mostly remember the veg o matic on late night infomercials, Ron made so many cool gadgets! I’ve been meaning to tell you that you have such beautiful handwriting, it’s such a lost art now. I was a child of the 50’s and 60’s and we had a penmanship teacher that would come to school once a month to see how our cursive writing was coming along. I really pride myself in writing beautiful letters all thanks to what we learned back in those days. Anyway, thank you for sharing as always!

Hi Suzanne! Like you, I watched a lot of his infomercials and we completely taken by his salesmanship! Like you, penmanship was an important skill taught in school and our teachers made sure we could write properly. Glad you are a letter writer - that is something that is fading away. There is nothing more precious than a handwritten letter. Thanks!

Thanks for great information on the manual food processors. Im looking forward to the part 2 on the electric models. I have an Oster Kitchen Center from the 80's and am wondering if the salad maker attachment is actually a food processor, and if so, could i use it to make the bean dip? I used my mini chopper/food processor to chop the beans, but could only do a small amount at a time. The Dip is excellent!! Would love to see info on the Oster Kitchen Center someday! ☺️

We recently went to the BBC good food show, in Birmingham England.
We stood watching a man demonstrate a new - fangled mandolin multi shredder, until we were ankle deep in grated carrot and cheese !
My Mum used a Mouli to make my sisters baby food, and a rotary Mouli for parmigiano ( or parmesan as we called it then )

I have my late mother’s Food Cutter - just like the one you showed and I also have the manual dated 1955.
As soon as you showed that manual, I knew it looked familiar!
Your show was very “leftist” today (as in all the sound came from the left speaker only!)
