  • As the weather turns colder, this easy and delicious soup will warm the body and soul. A great use for that left over ham bone, this soup is not complicated but does require a few hours to simmer - but good homemade soup is always worth the wait. It's even better the next day! Talk about going back in time!!
    I’m doing a little binge watching tonight while I recover from hip surgery, and I remembered that I still have the ham bone from last Easter that I need to make soup with!
    Most people tend to make something like split pea or navy bean soup, but I usually end up making a creamy ham, potato and dumpling soup. Was a favorite with my wife and kids way back then, and I continue to make it every year. I simmered the ham bone all afternoon with some onion, celery and garlic to make a tasty broth, sometimes I added ham soup base for a little extra flavor. After a couple hours I would pull out the ham bone and add the carrots and potatoes to simmer for a while, I would then make some dumpling dough and drop them into the boiling soup. After the dumplings floated to the top and I added the pulled ham meat back into the soup, I would stir in a slurry of half and half mixed with cornstarch to make it thick and creamy!! Of course you would season as you go with a little salt and fresh cracked black pepper… and maybe a dash of nutmeg.
    Wow!! I guess that you didn’t need to hear all that!! But once I started yakking I couldn’t stop. Thanks for the memories and thanks for listening to me ramble on. I should take some more painkillers and try to sleep!! Take care!

      Hi Greg! I hope you are recovering well from your hip surgery and that you are able to get around alright. I've known so many people who have had much better mobility and rid of discomfort after their surgery, so I wish you good healing and recovery!! I like your method for pea or bean soup! I've never had it with dumplings in it but it so sounds good! Amazing how much flavor you can get out of a ham bone! Hope you put that ham bone to good use! Take care of yourself and get well soon!!

    Looks & sounds good ! Good point on the ham bone ! The soup sure sounds delicious 😋. Sometimes I use a slow cooker to make soups & let it slowly. All day while I’m at work . Add corn bread & you got a meal ! 😊

    Hi Kevin....this recipe is a lot like one I learned a long time ago from my mother. The only difference is that in addition to what youve used we add 1/4 to 1/2c of sliced or chopped celery. It adds a depth of flavour to the soup.

      Heather - thanks for watching! I love the idea of the celery...next time I'll include some like your mom did!

    Hi guys! My room mate was gifted a huge half a ham (bone-in), and he is sharing it with me, along with the bone for soup. I am looking forward to it so much, as I love bean & ham soup. :)
    Here is a quick tip that I learned from my dearly-departed grandmother who helped raise my older siblings and me:
    As a "general rule of thumb," you may want to wait to add salt until the very end or the last half- hour of cooking beans. Otherwise, if you add it in the very beginning, the salt can delay the cooking time and make the beans tough.
    With that said, your soup looks delicious!! I look forward to making it. :)

    YUM! Smoked ham bone or pork hocks even better. There is this place where I live that sell high quality smoked and honey glazed hams that are very expensive. $45-$100 for a ham They sell soup and sandwiches also. Anyway they sell smoked ham bones for soup for $6 a bag and I just picked up a couple bags lately and put them in the freezer. I have never made the soup with navy beans, just yellow split peas, but I will have to try your recipe with the smoked bones

    I have always heard that salting the beans at the start of cooking slows down the cooking process. Do you ever find this happening for you?

    • @cavalcadeoffood
      @cavalcadeoffood  6 лет назад

      I heard the same thing - and that salting the beans early will make the tough. Honestly, I tried it both ways and didn't really notice a difference. Thanks Jean!
