I'm still relatively new to the TWD fandom (only watched the show about 1.5 years ago) but I've seen countless videos essays and yours are definitely my favourite. I've been loving these underrated character videos!
Axel is probably my favourite single-season character. He and Oscar could've been great longtime additions to the gang so it's sad that they sort of got the same "bad guy gets some redemption in the end" treatment the writers gave to Merle when these guys were so genuinely nice to everyone the whole time.
And random thought but I think it would've been cool to see the dynamic Axel and Eugene could've had. I feel like they would've had an "odd couple" vibe, sort of like Pinky and the Brain haha

Every time I rewatch the series, I end up STILL frustrated and upset over the amount of wasted potential Axel had. Axel was both immature with his sense of the new world, and his much needed casual humour and demeanour (which was SUCH a nice welcome to the group since everyone else was depressed the whole time), and mature at the same time with his similar age to Carol and a willingness to accept Rick and the groups ways and wanting to learn how to adapt like them. Carol absolutely needed another friend other than Daryl, and I’d argue she still does. Ezekiel is cool n all but I’ve never really felt a proper genuine connection between him and Carol, it felt unnatural/desperate to me. But Axel growing onto Carol really felt genuine, it felt like Carol (who at this point was still coming to terms with her abuse with Ed and losing her daughter), had a sort of sassy feminine wisdom of power of Axel, where SHE was the one making the rules/boundaries between them which I think would’ve really really helped her heal and become a stronger person with how absolutely accepting Axel was of her. Axel added some much needed light hearted humour and conversation that always made Carol smile and I felt really STARTED (because they cut it short smh) to slowly let her accept that there is still potential for non abusive and even nice men that she could have close in her life.
Axel didn’t ever question Rick’s authority and immediately understood the power and leadership Rick had, being a yes man to him. I think he could’ve really actually become a mentally strong reliable loyal soldier companion for the group. Someone you could TRUST tasks to, especially because he was growing a bond with Carol. Kinda like Dwight mixed with Abraham in both of their later arcs.
I mean what’s the point of going to these new locations if the story isn’t even going to adopt ONE of them into becoming a new member? I hated whenever that happened. Same with Noah’s situation in that aspect as well. These unique character locations/findings of how they come into the group as a single member have SOOOOOO much potential and really feel like a bit of last remaining humanity coming together from everyyyyyyywhere they go. Such a waste of a story. These things could’ve really really solidified TWD as a series

I always felt that Axel and Carol were a love story that ended just as it was really starting to develop, for me there were five times that I could see as the "right time" to kill off Axel all five of which happening post season 3. The first would be at the season 4 midseason finally prison battle as that's where he dies in the comics, the second would be in season 6 as a victim of the herd during No Way Out, the third is in late season 7 or early season 8 as casualty for the Alexandrians during All Out War, the fourth is in season 9 as a Whispers pike victim and the last one which is where I feel like he should have died is in season 5 with Carol and Axel taking the place of Andrea and Dale as its Axel that gets his leg eaten only for it to be where he was bitten and there for tainted meat. If anyone agrees with me on any of these let me know or if you feel like there was somewhere else Axel should have died let me know.

Maybe he could be killed by the Termites or something. This may be a very hot take but S3 in general made a lot of mistakes, and even though its still a classic, imo its the weakest link of the "golden era" (s1-5). I would have loved to have seen how good of a character Axel could have been if he was allowed to live. Heck if Andrew Lincoln saw potential in him, you know his character would have been good. And having him be a serious regular meant he wouldn't have been killed off anytime soon. Imagine if his relationship with Carol got a lot deeper and that could have had a chance to come into play in season 4. Imagine the conflict he could have had with Rick when finding out he kicked Carol out of the prison. He could have gotten pissed, or imagine if he helped Carol. Plus, seeing him when everyone is scattered could have been good. Imagine if he spent all his time in the prison, never venturing outside of its walls, then having to abandon it after the second attack. Imagine his reactions, and perspective as he's on the outside. Knowing the last time he was outside the prison walls things were normal, and things he once knew were gone. It would be like getting the perspective of the characters when things in the apocalypse first started.
Yet also the serial killer angle could have been interesting as well. Imagine if instead of Carol it was Axel doing the killings in season 4. In every episode someone new could be killed and it would mount the mystery. One of the others could be exploring the prison and find a room that wasn't found before. Inside is a burned room, which hold the records of all the prisoners. They find Axel's file in tacked and look it over finding out he was there for murder, which contradicts his story of robbing a store with a water pistol. Axel could then be viewed with suspicion until he was caught. Axel claims he's reformed and he didn't want to kill the people but it did for the greater good. Yet they can't believe him because of how he lied about the reason why he was in prison. Before they could decide what to do with him the prison is attacked. He's on his own, and could either
    A. Reunite with one of the characters and try to win their trust back
    B. Become a villain for the characters.
That could have been interesting to do. But one scene I clearly envision is him being at Alexandria, imagine if people knew him and were giving him scorn for what he did. That could have been an interesting scenario.

I think this was by design. Make interesting characters then kill them off. The whole cycle of shock value the show presented. A lot of characters were introduced from season to season only to be killed off relatively quickly. This was by design. It's no different than when writers focus heavily on a secondary character throughout an episode only to developed love/sympathy only to kill them off by the end of an episode a common trope in film/TV. The Walking Dead would just give us a few more episodes until this fate inevitably happened.

One thing I often forget is just how ruthless the writing was the early seasons of the show. The writers would hurt us but they would just keep reeling us in, they made it very interesting and wondering what happens next.

On the other hand, any person killed abruptly surely had potential, in real life or fiction. I'd like to think that at least one of the writers considered this a deliberate theme.

While i do agree, i wish he should've stayed alive longer, i dont like the idea of Axel being a villain/serial killer. Kindof goes against his redemption arc and the whole point of keeping him alive, you know.

They scrapped that idea and decided to have him be an actual member of the group, and then out of nowhere decided to have him get killed. Even if he didn't get shot by the Governor that idea was already removed.

Many have already commented this, but it is so true. TWD was terrible at utilizing its characters. It kept killing them all off. Dale was a special case because his actor asked to be killed off, but I loved Dale in the comics and would have loved to see his and Andrea's relationship. Andrea was just annoying in the show, when they should have made her more sympathetic, turning into a valued member eventually. She was Rick's best love interest and straight up one of the coolest comic characters. I never really cared for Michonne in the show. She wasn't nearly as cool and tortured as she was in the comics.
Carl, of course, was killed, instead of becoming arguably the most important character overall. T-Dog was an awesome character that they had no idea what to do with. Axel and Oscar were amazing and killed off. Bob was killed, giving him Dale's death from the comics, even though Dale had been there from the beginning, so it felt natural. We just got to meet Bob. Noah was inexplicably killed. Beth was killed right when she got interesting. Tyrese was awful in the show and got killed off before he did anything cool.
I stopped watching when most did, shortly after Glenn and Abraham were killed. Not because I was too sad or angry at the deaths, but because I had really stopped liking the show starting in season 3. It just got terrible by season 7.
I actually thought the season 7 premiere was decent, because I already knew about Glenn's death in the comics and wanted to see how they could surprise comic readers. Killing Abraham worked for me. It made sense given that Abraham already had a decent arc, and died earlier in the comics anyway, so we got a little extra Abraham in the show. I guess we had to make room for other, more interesting characters like... Tara?...... 🤨
Also, Morales just noped out at the end of season 1? 😂 I liked him. I get why they did; a family man just decided that going it alone would be better for his family. But still, it is a TV show and doesn't have to be perfectly realistic. Why introduce a character and then have him leave willingly a couple episodes later?

I am happy they didn't make him a serial killer that gutted Beth like the planned, but he could have grown to be a fan loved character being a normal dude, socially awkward and well intentioned. Him surviving Terminus and making it to Alexandria would have been great, or even taking Dale/Bob's place being tainted meat.

In that case half of the characters that meanwhile did survive shouldn't have. There's plenty of points in the early series when people should've died. You're saying Dale's death was well-written? Of all the times people are grabbed by walkers he's the only one ever to be disembowled like that..
Hey, why not have Carl, Beth and Daryl all get killed by random gunfire in the second Prison fight? You know, because that is 110% realistic, that happens in real life.

    • @BrainstormJr2nd
      @BrainstormJr2nd 2 месяца назад

@@SStupendous Pretty much, yeah. That's why people liked GoT so much in the earlier seasons and it fell off when it lost that charm.
Dale's death was only written that way as a slight insult to the actor for siding with the previous showrunner that AMC screwed over, so of course his character got the strange death. Same with Andrea who's actress had disagreements with the current showrunner. Either way, the writing just got worse later on as they introduced bland characters who "replace" the characters that died for simply pissing off the showrunner. Lmfao.
