A number of people are saying "shock wave" in the comments. Those are all pressure/compression waves. Shock waves are extremely thin, a mm or two. Those are more in compression wave category, >10 cm.
In the 1800s, in America, they had a tradition called "The Ringing of the Anvil" because fireworks were too expensive to obtain beyond the reaches of large cities. It was called the ringing of the anvil because if it gets spinning in the right way, it rings (much like the second launch (2:43). They achieved it with two anvils, one upside down with gunpowder inside, and the other resting on top of it, upright
I'm from Mississippi and I can confirm this is a thing. We have a flywheel festival twice a year where they launch those suckers. If you ever get the chance to see it in real life, it's amazing! P.S. The 3 leg dog's name is Lucky and we drink sweet tea. We can go to my mama's house, she makes the best.
@jakemakes Houston, MS. Twice a year, around April and September. It's called the Flywheel Festival. There's a website if you Google that. I went a few times when I was younger and it's pretty cool. It's kiiinda like a flee market mixed with an antique show. Lots of old tractors and some old trains. They also have food and stuff. The main attraction by far is the anvil launch. It's something that a video can't recreate. It goes incredibly high, and the thud from the shockwave hitting your chest is incredible. It's a great little weekend day trip.
A flywheel.. festival? My biggest take away from flywheels is when the one and only Adam Savage tried to make a replica of some weaponized flywheel. And out of all the crazy shit he did on Mythbusters, flywheels scared him more than just about anything.
@RyohMadDog Haha. He's not wrong to be afraid. It's a very heavy spinning chunk of metal who's only purpose is to be very heavy and keep spinning. It's an extreme amount of kinetic energy in something that looks basically stationary. If it comes off, it's a projectile at that point. Anything in from of it is in trouble. That almost is terrifying and it's not even including when they explode. With that said the festival is safe and it would be a freak accident if anything were to happen. The only thing I've seen get hurt is during the tractor pull an engine blew up, but everyone is is at a safe distance and it was pretty cool tbh.
Favorite phrase I've ever heard @ 1:31 "I felt that in my spirit" I will be using that line from now on. And I'm also from a small town near where they got those anvils.
I'm curious what dropping the gunpowder down to 1/2 or even 1/4 of a pound would do. Right now there is a LOT of smoke and if you could reduce that you could see more of the gel react.
@@longWriter Blackpowder is self oxidizing i.e. creates it's own oxygen. You could've filled that tube to the brim if you wanted. You'd have a bomb instead of a mortar but you could do it. It's how you can shoot a gun in a full vaccuum.

I wanted to say how great it was that the music was only during the playback. A problem with the solmoguys is that they play music while they are discussing the event and watching the slo-mo. The music always gets in the way of paying attention to them.
Those are too thick to be shockwaves, which are 1.5 mm or less. They look over 10 cm, the normal compression-wave category. Black powder doesn't detonate like TNT, C4, etc. and it takes a detonation to take pressure waves to the next level.
