- The world's largest radio control plane, the 1:5 scale B-29 Superfortress, with a Wingspan of 29.5 Ft and weighting in at a whopping 300 pounds.. It crashed.
Currently resides in Ankeny, Iowa at the Iowa Heritage of Flight Museum at the Ankeny, Regional Airport. Where the expo was located. - Авто/Мото
As a modeler I feel for the builders. That was heartbreaking. :(
I’m a fellow modeler and yes, I do feel the heartbreak too
I feel so bad for those people who worked on that RC-plane. Imagine the amount of hours they put into that. and it doesn' matter if you like RC or not, you have to respect their passion. Must've been heartbreaking.
Hours ? Years, if not 10 years
Yep
@@anselme9636 can still be counted in hours..
315 million seconds wasted😢
Dreez76 It is allll in the game 💥
If only there were more people to say, “Nice and easy” he might have made it.
@bassman686, what I was thinking. Buddy had lots of help, but they showed up just a few minutes late.
Now the very same people can help him expressing their thoughts 'n' prayers.
Ida told em to shut the hell up so I can fly the wings off that butch till it gets down safely! I’m not sayin I’m a fantastic pilot but having people try to tell me how to use the rudder in that situation is not helpful because if your flying that thing you have to be really good and you would clearly know to use your rudder to correct an engine loss.
Was there a miniature Glenn Miller on board?
They caused it. 😅
This was in the 80's at the RC Aviation Festival in Ida Grove Iowa. It was built to be ptrt of the striking back show that was put as part of the show which included a battle between large scale rc warbirds built from kits manufactured by Byron Originals. This plane was rebuilt after this crash(and many others) and was finally retired when the show was discontinued. As far as I know it still exists in Ankeny, Iowa.
Do you know what caused him to loose control?
@Donald Allen it did not
American pickers will find it
@@bonkeydollocks1879 I don't get it. I know who American Pickers are but your joke was really bad or I missed it lol.
@@davebrittain9216 it wasn't a joke. The plane was retired and is somewhere in iowa. American pickers may well come across it in one of their picks in the future. Its not that difficult is it?
RIP to all who were taken to soon. I will never fly in an RC plane again after seeing this tragedy.
So I'm never gonna fly again

Total respect for the passengers. Didn't see a single parachute. Every soul on board rode it all the way down.

The three words I fear at an r/c airplane get together"I lost it!"
Yea
I've said it. Luckily it was only a trainer and lucky it gently landed in a tree. My dad had someone with a cherry picker get it down a few days later and it only had a small hole in the wing
There are four chainsaws missing their engines.
lol. yep.
XD
Lol
That was the most intense scene ever. "Get on that rudder, buddy". "nice and easy" "come on, Kenny" 😂😂☠️
Actually, putting it in the trees may have caused far less damage than impact with solid ground. Many a pilot/passenger have survived real crashes into trees because of the reduced G-forces...
In the 40s, a covert team of Japanese agents planted those trees. They knew that one day the day would come.
I knew it!...
Yeah, but they were Banzi Trees……
🤣🤣🤣
@@mancaveveteran4975 😁
@@mancaveveteran4975 You Birch your Ash they were! I'm pretty sure those are the same Banzais that devoured Charley Brown's kite. But for reals, anybody know what the people were saying came of in mid air?
That looked seriously underpowered right from the off!
I was thinking the same thing
Doesn't look underpowered to me, and I have flown some "underpowered" models! (Among others a Graupner Cirrus on a Babe Bee and a four metre glider on a speed 400).
A .Circulator Yep...underpowered! Struggling to take off.
Leif Vejby
Yeah, this wasn't a glider mate. It was as underpowered as you could get without it being an RC car.
Engine failures
This is the first RC plane that impressed me with its engine sounds. I kept thinking too bad there wasn't a button that cut the engines and fired a ballistic parachute out of the fuselage.
Me to , agree , the sound was epic
Ballistic?
@@villageblunder4787 I think that's what they call parachutes that are deployed almost instantly with an air cannon. I'm thinking of the emergency parachutes that ultralights have that are shot out by compressed air and deploy instantly.
@@pschroeter1. You are quite right. It's a very odd name for a parachute system as the word 'ballistic' has nothing to do with parachutes. Conventional or rocket ejected.
So helpful for the pilot to hear "Nice and Easy" several times from one of the idle hands....
Is this a misnomer for "vegitative", or are you suggesting I live in a state where vegetables are grown? Either way, don't bother replying....

I believe this was originally from Byron Originals, of Ida Grove, Iowa, who built this B-29 and other 1/5 scale warbirds for their Pacific air battle re-enactments in the late 80s. I used to attend them each year, and they were fantastic!
Was this plane used in the movie " Empire of the Sun "?
I was there that day and saw the B-29 crash! It was certainly a very sad event. The B-29 was part of an annual R C show (back in the 1980's) in Ida Grove, Iowa called "Striking Back." The show was put on by Byron Originals. I would attend every year. Watching this video brought back many wonderful memories of attending that event as it was always a very enjoyable time.
This B-29 was part of the ByronOriginals show in Ida Grove Iowa. It was a great show featuring real WWII war birds and unique RC models. The Godberson brothers closed down the show after a tragic crash that killed the pilot of a Zero. The radio technology during the 70’sand 80’s wasn’t what it is today and there were more than one person trying to fly that machine. As I remember, it had a 28 ft wingspan.
You're the first person to agree with me on this. Thanks man.
"You build them to crash them". That's the only way I was able to handle crashes of my RC aircraft (both fixed and rotary wing). Well done to the builders for constructing such a magnificent scale model.
My mentor when I first came into the RC hobby had one piece of advice. He told me they all have a built-in date of destruction. Sooner or later they all go back in the same box they came out of.
He isn’t dead, he comes back in the sequel.
Man, that is heartbreaking. An incredible build and I'm glad I could watch such a massive RC fly.
Wow... Apparently runways are there for decoration... I love how the plane takes off right next to the runway on the grass instead of on the runway.
Grass is softer for the gears.
Yeah I bet the plane loves to go on bumpy terrain with bits of it catching on the grass, the turbine could catch on grass, also if it hit a rock it would just fall over and basically fail.
yep.
Selim Eylül Actually, it is a little easier to get the plane to track straight on the grass.
MrHaljohn2814 If it's better for planes to take off on grass why do you think we invented runways? Grass catches in the turbines and engines and they catch in holes and on rocks. On runways it's just flat and easy to land on. Also if your landing or taking off at high speeds the friction on the grass and rocks would just cause the grass to burst into flames.
The friendly neighbors whose back yard it crashed into, reverse engineered it and built one just like it.
Sounded like they all spoke some kind of Chinese too.
After the crash all I could think of was Bob Barker saying, "That was not nice and easy." from Happy Gilmore lol
Grandchildren, "So, Grandpa. Whatcha gonna buy us for Christmas?" Grandpa after crash, "I'll give ya a hint. It will be in a million pieces."
Who's watching this 2019?
Even after all these years I still can't talk about it;(
You?
@@william1389 No it wasn't me, I watched this when it first came out, was sad to watch, then it came up in my recommendations, and I saw it again,

RUclips recommendations. It's weird.
Nesting bird in tree- "Drat, there goes the neighbourhood!"
😂
That's almost big enough to qualify for 'Mayday Mayday'. Respect to the builder and sorry for your loss, mate.
Hey, that's me in the blue shirt with the two-way radio on my hip. A blast from the past.
There's no way I would fly something like that if I built it; too chicken!
Actually, often the builder and the pilot (at least for the maiden flight) are different people. One is better at building, the other is better at flying.
Noone is flying my plane but me or crashing it.
@@szabolcsmate5254 Like in auto racing the greatest mechanic is not the best driver.
Dude, that thing is enormous. You could almost get in it! :)
I was there when this happened. I was just a kid back then. Kinda neat to see it on RUclips.
That’s insane. When was it?
I thought when he said "I Lost it" he ment the radio control signal reception. I looked like he had a good climb rate even with the gear down.
i feel SOOOO bad for the owner of the rc plane.
And the tree it crashed into.
God bless him/her

Although this is horrible, the RUclips video of someone’s gigantic B-52 crash is more spectacular and heartbreaking.
That brought back some memories. 30 or more years ago in St. Charles, IL I was at an R C field and I think it was a 1/16 scale B29 took off and flew about the same amount of time. Only it rolled and went into the ground just before the runway.
Wow probably the slowest crash ever
Looks slow because of how big the actual plane is
That was the most polite response to what was, maybe, an expensive accident. "DAM"
Man that looked like the real thing right there boy! Even the filming! Fell for the guys that did all that work .
I was thinking it was too big to get off the ground and then I remembered thirst 747s that keep me awake at night. Very impressive model. I'm thinking they should have used a stronger transmitter
That was clearly underpowered from the start. And then, to try and bring it in low over treetops instead of the runway or a field doomed it for sure. As a builder, I feel bad for them. I know the time and effort, not to mention cost, to get a project like this off of the ground, no pun intended.
Perhaps fly it over the trees, drop the throttles and then slowly stall it into the soft brush, nose up and slow, might be more desirable than a hard landing on the ground. Either way, it would be very heartbreaking, to say the least.
@TigTrager " clearly underpowered " what was the power loading ?
Old German immigrant pulling a casing out of his smoking shotgun: "I got another one, Elfriede!"
😁😁
There's nothing funnier than watching grown men screw up their toys.
Pretty heart breaking indeed.
I hope the pilot survived and is ok!
xxdizannyxx It's a RC Plane. RC means Remote Control
The pilot had some momentary dizziness and loss of balance. He needed to sit down for a minute. Other than that, I think he's ok ;)
May all those Mini-Pilots rest in pieces.
Byron Godberson built those large scale models to 1/5th scale, and he called them his 1/5th Air Force. He knew my Dad and my uncle, (my Uncle Ed had a TV/Radio repair shop in Ida Grove for many years), and my Dad was in the 5th Air Force (22nd Bomber Group, 408 Squadron) in the Pacific Theatre during WW2. Dad was hoping he would build and fly a 1/5th scale B-24J, like the ones he flew, but Byron opted to GO LARGE!
I feel for the pilots, I've crashed a few planes myself when I was a beginner. But this was so much work put into it. I hope the damage wasn't so bad, it seems like there was a radio frequency interference. Only if they had 2.4 ghz back then the pilots would of gone back home with there plane in one piece.
1:19 looks familiar

That baby crying in the background is remembering it’s past life being a turret gunner in WWII
Yep, I was their that day.
What a show each year.
I knew it wouldn't last so made every year they had it.
They sad they lost it and they ment the engines as it appears multiple engines loss.If you were listening carefully youd noticed that during that statement we lost it the engines noise lowered and only one engine left for turning home.He also said easy on the rudder because when you fly on one wing engine you compensate it with a rudder and since one engine is not enough for elevate the plane, thats why the plane was descending. One thing more, these kind of planes(giant multimotors) are often operated with at least 2 transmitters, one pilot and one say engineer so the engineer controls the engines, flaps, gears and whatever his assigned for so maybe he lost the signal or he said he lost engines.
Hi TrippleZ3D, thank you for the explanation - I was wondering how a single R/C pilot could control all these channels for such a complex model. Ciao, L
thanks for explaining - had not understood the rudder comment until then
That was so poorly written it was painful to read but you made your point.
In the end seriously sounds like he had one motor in FOUR working. That was going flat out but nowhere near enough to keep the model in the air. I fly FULL size as well and most of the small twin engine aircraft if they lose one engine the saying is that it just takes LONGER TO CRASH!!!!!!
kinda like 'flight of the phoenix'....lol.
I cried. All that good work!
No you didn't lol
Well for cat's sake, that was a whole lotta nuthin.
I half expected to see a plume of smoke rising in the distance, & a couple of Fire Engines racing off. :-)
Charlie Brown's kite eating tree now upgraded to eating planes.
That plane also looked like it was flying tail-heavy (I was expecting a stall), but it could have been something else.
If I ever get into the hobby, I'll probably stick with foamies. That way crashes would be more comedy instead of anything to cry about.
I thought the same thing when i got in but lemme tell ya it is REALY hard to resist the temptation of the larger balsa and composite/ fiberglass models. But i hope you get in it is a very fun hobby just quite costly
Simulators also make for inexpensive, comical crashes. The space bar is a beautiful thing. I wish I had a "space bar" when I crash my rc aircraft. That would be soooo convenient.
You forgot to mention model rockets in the list of things the tree eats.
BEAN B I have three foamies, and all of them have at least had the wing ripped off at the base. One, a Mustang, had a malfunction with the aileron, and it barrel rolled as I was taking off, going about 20 mph. Tore the right wing into three pieces, ripped the engine compartment off, tore the fuselage from the wing base, and pulled the plugs on the receiver.
She was flying again the next day.
That sounds traumatic
I remember this day, upon further investigation terrorists had manned and deliberately took over the crew and crashed the aircraft. RIP
xsurosisx,
Yep, They found the body of the Japanese pilot in the wreckage. Those little guys can really hold a grudge!
Omg that was so funny the sound it made when it crunches and the disappointment in their voice 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hey the bright side is no fire ball so it's fixable and can be back in the air once again thank you for the video I just love the B-29 (glad it didn't have "the big bomb" aboard her)
Expensive tree trimmer
Annnnnnnnnd that is where you need 2.4 ghz
From the aged looks of this video, I don't think 2.4ghz radios were available at the time this video was made.
Planes have two main features. They fly and they crash and they do it equally beautiful.
Gawd...flashbacks to my Dad many years ago...he spent a year and a half building a r/c plane from Balsa wood, stretching and gluing its skin on...and on her maiden flight about half way thru he lost radio connections and we watched her flying out over the Mountains of Ventura California...never recovered her, it even made the news as I racall....I so feels these guys pain!
"Ah......damn!"

OMG...I hope those Royal Canadian pilots survived that horrible airplane crash. Looks to be a very nice vintage WWII bomber plane.

All 4 engines turning the same direction makes it yaw right. Trying to turn left created more drag, reducing lift.
David Geiger Same as the real ones. They lead with the left engines instead of braking on the right.

I once say a video aptly entitled "This'll make you cry". It was an R/C B-52 with 8 real hot-thrust engines worth about $5000 each. No word as to whether or not they were recovered and re-used.
This must've been really sad. The reason there are so many dislikes is probably because people are referencing this to modern days where back then it was on of the largest and honestly I honestly could have been themlargest for that time.
So, I like model aircrafts. And, fly them too. Sad to see this happen.I hope you can discuss history and politics some other place. This video is about rc-plane.

Heartbreaking... but what a beautiful plane that was and what a sight to see.
I didn't see any chutes
You can tell the pilot just dropped to his knees and cried ☹️
Actually the largest RC plane ever flown was a Boeing 707 that the FAA deliberately pancaked into the ground to test fuel retardant additives. But as a hobbyist this B-29 is one HUGE model.
Looked and sounded massively under powered
@TheSarge1975 - It's not a flippin fighter like most RC planes, it's a 300lb. monster bomber.
I've done that few times before. Hard to tell depth sometimes and you forget about the trees
Dudes get all dressed up in pilot uniforms and land an rc plane in the trees. Old dudes wearing sweatshirts and blue jeans fly hundreds of flights and still have intact planes.
Was there a little Action Man figure in the cockpit going 'DEEEEEEEAAAAAAGHHHHHH !'
I really wish there was more information on this. It is possible if it crashed in the tree tops the damage was slight (if lucky). Also, when he says, "lost it!" what did he mean? Did he loose elevator control?
Hank Fuddle He lost an engine or 2 engines. That's why it descended so fast.
at the start of the video where they are about to take off it looked like something fell off it before it got in the air, not sure what it was but it looked like a long thin piece maybe six to seven inches long.
Perfect example of amateur pilots who have never even commanded a real A/C much less a toy. I suggest you find a ground school.
