It's truly amazing to see the evolution of R/C over the years. My first R/C model was a Trixter Beam powered by an OK Cub .14 glow plug engine. The radio unit was a single channel Berkeley Super Aerotrol with a wound-up rubber band to turn the escapement. Push the button once and the rudder went to one side. Let off and it returned to neutral. Next push was to the other side. Rudder only! This was around 1950. Soon, all the control line guys started building R/C models. I might be the only one of our model group left. Fond memories.
Probably a stall. You have to give power and push DOWN to get the nose pointed at the ground. Let the speed build up and the wings flying again. Pull out of the dive before hitting the ground. In this instance, he'd have to recognize it really quickly but he didn't.
I just gotta say it’s heartbreaking when the plane gets destroyed. These people put their time, money, soul, and tears into these projects. I have mad respect for them.
That was my thought too. I can laugh with them about a minor injury, like a broken wheel or something, but when they're a complete loss I feel truly awful for them.

@@MothaLuva I wonder about making an actual RC gyrocopter after watching that. Did they power the rotor because at that scale it does not move fast enough on autorotate alone to generate lift?
Fred Lougee I don’t know. I’m not an expert on RC model airplanes...what I do know is, that the problem with model airplanes compared to full scale is the Reynolds number. Which basically tells one, how a thing is performing in the surrounding medium. In this case, air. This is the main factor, why RC airplanes normally can’t use the airfoil shape of the original. I think, that it is possible to operate a RC gyro in the original function. All depends on the shape of the rotor blades.
@@MothaLuva I am even less an expert on things RC myself, this is my first time hearing the term "Reynolds Number", but I am aware of the physics involved. It should be obvious to anyone who didn't sleep through high school years. If you increase the physical dimensions by square you increase the mass by cube and it works the other way. But with flying models it's a double curse. The wing has the disproportionate loss of lifting area while there is also a disproportionate loss of lift due to reduction in absolute wind speed. But one thing I have noticed is that RC helos have a much higher rotor RPM than the full-sized version. This is what makes me question whether a true RC autogyro is even possible. Speaking of autogyros, I just remembered something somebody posted on their channel a while back. You know how people who are turning the rhetorical question "How stupid can you get?" into a competition...These guys at an airfield somewhere, looked like Texas, took an autogyro with no engine, hooked it up to their F-150 with what looked like about 60' of rope. It looked like the vid was shot by someone with a phone sitting inside the bed of the truck, but you see the autogyro get airborne, about 10 feet of altitude, and then start to stall out, slide to the pilot's right and crash. Stupid people.
