@johnalder6028 Hey there John, what do you think of the deep red color on this unit. I really like it. Stands out in a crowd. Seems like the Reading and Northern owns them all, which is great!😊
Good morning Jamie! Thats a lot of work! I'm looking forward to see the refreshed paint job. Thank you for the update friend. I hope you're having a very good morning.
Good evening Dennis! I hope you had a nice weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing it repainted too. I was hoping it would be one of my projects to design, but my colleague is working on it. He's got several proposed ideas, and I'll look forward to seeing which one they go with.
Budd went out of business, they made Amtrak's Amfleet I and II's which are being retired at some point. RDC's like those haven't been made since the 1950's. So, there is a finite number of them in preservation. R&N could use the extra capacity because a lot of their runs sell out. The 2102 excursion from Nesquehoning to Tunkhannock on June 22 sold out in mid-April. Some of the Reading to Jim Thorpe RDC runs sell out. RDC's ran through Port Clinton regularly into the Conrail/SEPTA years on the Philly to Reading and Pottsville service which ended in 1981 after being cut back to Pottstown in July 1981. They had stops in West Hamburg and Auburn I believe in the final years of the service. Now, you can take a train from Reading to Pottsville on the R&N and there is a five hour layover in Pottsville.
Glad you enjoy seeing them restored, John. Unfortunately Budd is no longer in business and no one makes these anymore. That makes it all that much more important to keep the remaining ones in good condition.
Oooooh yeah jamie! Another RDC, to join the party! The guys and gals at R&N are magicians! Just when ur getting a little bit impatient, BAM, shes back! Awesome video jamie!! Scott
Thanks, Scott! I knew they were getting close to a first test, but it was still quite a surprise when it went past my office window the first time. I didn't catch that pass, but luckily I heard the horn at the crossing on the second pass so I was able to run out to catch it.
Glad to see it somewhere it’s going to be taken care of and appreciated! Are the 22 & 6134 (what we used to call the “Can of Purple at TVRM) on the list for returns to service?
Thanks! I'm thrilled we're getting these back into service. #22 (our #9165) should be up next for restoration, though I'm not sure the plans for #6134 (our #9163) yet.
That is wonderful! Thank you for sharing. Now I’m sitting here rerunning in my mind all the RDC trips I’ve taken over the last half century. Good times. (And I’ve worked on them. Not as good.)
@@JamieMakin The RDC, legally, is a locomotive and falls under the jurisdiction of locomotive inspections found in the applicable regs. They have two Detroit engines, no problem, and hydraulic transmissions, big problem in the sense that nothing else in the roundhouse does. “Real” locomotives are diesel electric. Like every machine they have their quirks. Learn them and respect them and everything will be fine.
Good morning Jamie. This is very exciting. Do you know what the paint scheme will be. I think the deep red looks good. Glad we will have yet another great RDC to ride and chase.
Good evening Kevin! My colleague is working on several proposed paint schemes for it, and we'll have to wait and see what management picks. I think the dark red and gold looks fantastic too and would match the rest of our stuff, but I also like the traditional blue that the Reading Company used to use.
I love Budd RDCs and pretty much everything Budd built. I was born and raised in Baltimore. Baltimore and Miami have Budd metro EMUs that were purchased on the same contract.
Hi Jamie, Great to see another RDC revived to running condition. Do you have any idea where R&N will use this unit? I spoke with a fellow in Nesquehoning a couple weeks ago and he thought R&N might start running multiple daily trips between NESQ & JT to take advantage of the free parking at the new campus. Sounds like a reasonable application. As usual, nice video work! Congratulations on your new full time gig with the RR, 🥳
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the kind words on my new gig! I believe this RDC will be in service soon as plans are being made for its new paint job and interior restoration. I'm not sure where it will run though. It could end up being additional capacity for the fall trips. Shuttles are being talked about, but so far no plans are finalized for them. I'll be sure to share any news that comes out though!
Hi there Henry! As far as I know #9165 will be restored and put into service after #9164, but I haven't heard of any plans to do so for #9163 yet. I'm thinking they'll wait til the others are done to decide.
Glad to see the old gal running. I miss having the RDCs down here, but glad that now they’ll get to serve the R&N folks.
Thanks! Glad we can put these back in service, and I'm looking forward to my first ride in #9164. #9165 (former TVRM #22) should be next.
Well done report ! Thanx !

Great to see an RDC up and running. It's a really neat looking railcar. I hope you keep us posted when it starts passenger service, soon. 😊
Thanks, glad you enjoyed seeing it! I'll definitely have updates when it's back in service.
It... LIVES!!. All seriousness, good to see it about.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! And cool that you got to ride them years ago.
Great catches and nice video jamie
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Glad to see old given new life!
Me too!
Finally! I was wondering when this girl would move. Matches so much with their current fleet
Nice to see one of the ex-TVRM RDCs out and about!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!

Anytime, Jamie.
Nice update Jaime! Love those RDC's, especially the horn. Whenever I hear it, I just know it must be an RDC coming 😄😃😃
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! I love the horn on this RDC and the others as well ... except the odd one on one end of #9167 lol.

Great to see any of these RDCs still exist, in running condition or otherwise.
It sure is, glad you appreciate them too!
We need ti start building more of these RDCs, bring them back to Southern Ontario, better still, bring themback everywhere!
I'd love to see more of these out there!
First ever RDC ride was on a B&O RDC. Later, got to commute on MBTA RDC’s.Great to see this one coming back into service.
Very cool that you got to ride them!
Hearing The Bell On RDC Car Almost Reminds Me Of WMSR 502. Awesome Video Jamie
Cool, glad you enjoyed the video!
Awesome video Jamie
Thanks Marilyn!
Good morning, Jamie🎉
Hey there buddy!
Cool, I didn't know that they had 3 more RDC's. Thanks for sharing and hopefully if you don't mind updating us when it's finished.👍🏾
Thanks, Ron, glad you enjoyed it! I'll definitely be sharing more updates as I'm a huge fan of the RDCs!

Nice to see a TVRM RDC at R&N Jamie!
Thanks! I'm hoping to see it in service real soon!

Great to see them restore it, mechanically. From what I've heard before they were too much of a hassle to keep in self propelled condition previously.
I'm really happy to see it restored too! The RDCs seem to need continual repairs and maintenance, but IMO they're totally worth it.

Will it keep the Maroon livery to match the current coaches and GP39s?

What happened to the port clinton,
Researching 💙🌎💚
look like 270 and 275 have return to port clinton
They've been back for about a week for some repairs.
Port Clinton camera what happened to it I used to like watching the live cameras
I'm not sure, I've tried to find out to no avail.
Was there ever or would it be possible to ever fit windows along the roof in front and behind the power vents? An RDC “Dome Car” of sorts?
I'm not sure if the structural design of the cars would allow for that, but it would be pretty cool!
