Budd rdc's the pride of northeast Philly! Built by our parents and grandparents. Thanks to you and the people, ownership on down, for the passion and hard work keep our history alive and running. To show the younger generations what pride and hard work is. I live 2 miles south of where these wonderful machines were created. 70 years old and still gliding down the rails. That's American knowhow and pride! Thank you again.
I was recently looking into where Budd used to manufacture stuff, and I believe the RDCs were made at the Red Lion plant which is long gone. Their older plant on Hunting Park Avenue had been abandoned until a few years ago when it was renovated into a biotech research center called Budd Bioworks.
Hey jamie! Awesome chase of #9164, she looks amazing in her new coat of paint, especially in the sunlight. Glad you got to meetup with russ as well! Scott
Road an RDC from Outer Station in July to JT. We had no AC on the RDC, but it was a great trip. Hope to be back. Great railroad you work for, Congrats!
Thanks! I've been so happy working for the railroad. Glad you enjoyed your RDC trip despite no AC on the day of your ride, and hopefully we'll see you on board again soon.
I remember when the Reading railroad’s RDCs ran on the Bethlehem branch. I wish my father had taken me for a ride to Hellertown and back to Lansdale. By the time I was old enough to do it myself, the passenger service had long ended. The only RDC ride I have taken was on the Cape May Seashore Line. That was nearly 25 years ago now. Your Budd RDC’s look great!
Excellent work Jamie! You, the mechanical team, and the paint shop guys did an excellent job bringing 9164 to life! Wasn’t able to see all four together for the test run yesterday, but I can’t wait to see them all one day in service!
Thanks Collin! I wish you could have been out there with me that day, but hopefully you'll get to see 9164 run soon (and hopefully with its three playmates).
Great deal, working for Reading and Northern. I did one of the Pottsville to Jim Thorpe trips,a few years ago, those RDC's were like riding in a Cadillac.
That's a great way to describe riding in the RDCs! I've always been impressed with how smooth and comfortable they are. I love working for Reading and Northern too, and that has taken my love of these machines to a whole new level.
Jamie, I never knew you grew up in NJ! My son was just at Belle Mead Station. Not in the best shape I’m sorry to say. Hopewell is getting a big Reno. Congrats on your new job. You do beautiful work ⭐️🚂 btw, thanks for the Blue Mtn. Fire update. We’re in New Hope & had two fires started by the RR.
Hi Samantha! That's wild that your son recently visited Belle Mead Station. It has been many, many years since I was there. I've heard it's literally falling apart now and probably slated for demolition. Very sad, but I have so many memories there. It's literally where my love of RDCs began. To have gotten to do the graphics work on this one is super special to me, literally the high point of my career so far. Glad to hear you appreciated my efforts with the graphics, and with the Blue Mountain fire update. I heard about those New Hope fires, and I hope that won't be repeated. At least we've gotten some rain, though we still need a lot more. Nice to hear from you, and Happy Thanksgiving!
Jamie, graphics are first rate. Still marveling at your work on the Pioneer Tunnel Loki. The PRSL ran RDC's through my childhood home and they almost always ran as single cars, sometimes in pairs. Never saw FOUR running together. Sorry I missed this.
Hi Karl! It was awesome meeting you at Pioneer Tunnel the other week, and I appreciate your kind words about my graphics work there and at Reading & Northern. It's interesting you grew up seeing single Budd cars, as that was something I didn't get to see until I saw R&N's 9167 running solo not that long ago. Hopefully as ticket sales pick up, we'll be running all four together more often, and hopefully you'll be able to catch that. It was a first for me on this chase, and it sure was cool!
Another beautiful example of reading and Northerns train system these guys put a lot of money in these things I think they're going to have passenger rail service within a couple years keep up the great work out there at reading cuz you're one of the better railroads
@JamieMakin ohhhh, yes!, ive found that out the hard way while painting H-O train cars, only to have to get the wrong paint off and start over .........but, the weather here is currently much toooo cold to even think about spray painting outside, will have to wait until it starts warming up again.
Same here. There's things I'd love to paint, but we went from summer hanging on through late October to early December feel more like the deep freezes of February.
Hey Jamie. Good morning friend. I'm very proud of you. Those graphics are amazing. Somehow modern and classic at the same time. Of course Andy's going to drive the maiden voyage of four RDC's together. What's the use of having trains if you can't play with them excellent footage. Wonderful narration I can hear the happiness and pride in your voice. Awesome video friend. I really enjoyed it.
Good evening Dennis! Sorry for the slow reply, these past few months it's been really difficult for me to catch up on things. I'm glad you enjoyed the graphics and the work I did on the RDC. I love what I do so much, and still sometimes can't believe how lucky I was to land this position. I always enjoy seeing Andy play with his 1:1 scale toys. That's part of what makes this railroad special is how much everyone there is passionate about it starting with the folks all the way at the top. Hope you're doing well, and have a good weekend.
Fantastic video, Jamie, and the graphics look phenomenal! I was out and about yesterday hunting MCQA and a work train on the M&S Branch, and I unfortunately missed the RDCs everywhere I stopped on my way south.
Ah, the sound of Budd. That horn, and that bell just bring shivers down the spine. I'm too young to remember when SEPTA ran out to Pottsville, but I DO remember the Silverliner II and III. And I have VERY vague memories of seeing a Blueliner go by when I was sledding one time when I was really young. And, of course, I've seen footage of those days here on RUclips (fmnut is a good channel for this sort of thing). Watching this just brings that somehow-seeming-not-too-distant past to life. Now all we have to do is extend to Franklin Street once Amtrak arrives! Then there can be connecting service all the way through from Philadelphia, which would be a HUGE boom for every town between Reading and Pottsville. The Reading got Philadelphia-Pottsville times down to 2 hours and 17 minutes with the RDCs. I see no reason why that couldn't be bettered with a little investment. And two hours has been bandied about as being the absolute outermost limit of commuting. And that's leaving aside the ability to commute into READING from the likes of Pottsville and Phoenixville. With Amtrak taking over the Reading-Phoenixville route, the RDCs could be cascaded onto other lines to act as "pathfinders" for the restoration of service, such as Bethlehem-Scranton (and don't we just NEED to re-open Philadelphia-Bethlehem?).
Thanks! And welcome to my channel! Glad you enjoyed the video, and I'm looking forward to unveiling 9165 too when we get that one restored and running.
Nice video shows want was once a daily trip in the past. Now if the government cooperates and restores service between Reading thru King of Prussia to Philadelphia maybe the Reading railroad will be more than just a memory to some of older generation.
I would absolutely love for passenger rail service to be restored in that area. It's great riding these historic trains for fun, but it would be even better to make them part of our daily lives again.

The maroon and gold was a nice look, and there was a lot of internal debate about which color scheme to use. Ultimately I'm glad we went with the blue as these RDCs deserve their own look.
Tough decision, but agree! I would like to see the interior ceilings restored and not a big fan of the sky/birds motif. Honoring the hawk mountain theme?
It's just carrying on a theme started by an artist that used to do work for us, but definitely inspired by wildlife in local places like Hawk Mountain.

Thanks, Joe! I'm looking forward to working on that one when the time comes.
LIKED as always! 🚋🚋🚋🚋
Thanks!
I once suggested shortening the name of the railroad on the rolling stock. Looks great!
Thanks! I like the sound of the shortened name better, though I'm still getting use to the look on the coaches as it makes the tops look a bit blank.

Still awaiting their turn as of right now.
