1980s Throwback! Reading & Northern Switchers Pull a Coal Train - Yard Job Shifting & Kicking Cars

- We follow around Reading & Northern's YJNR (Yard Job North Reading) doing miscellaneous switching duties and heading to customers. But on one day in 2023, a trio of end cab switchers left the yard to grab a coal train and take it down the mainline, a throwback to a different era of railroading once common in this part of Pennsylvania.
EMD SW variants and MP15DC locomotives were a mainstay in the anthracite coal region during the days of the Reading Railroad in the 70s and up into Conrail the decade later. By the end of the 80s, Conrail wanted out of the business and Andy Muller took over the territory in the 90s, building up the Reading & Northern system to the over 400 miles in northeastern PA.
Today, it's somewhat a rarity on any railroad to see end cab switchers hauling big trains down a mainline as this type of motive power is generally assigned to local switching duties, so I hope you enjoy this catch and the other scenes included of YJNR over the years.
Gotta love those end cabs! R&N is a super cool RR. Really need to visit next time I'm back east. Great video!
Thanks Mike, there's certainly a lot to see and do, even outside of the Steam and passenger side of things. Really something for anyone.
I really enjoy that in big bold print the railroad places the model and horsepower of the engines on them.
Yeah it's neat, modeled after the Reading GP40-2s
Never seen yard switchers move that fast. Didn’t know they could.
And absolutely brilliant work
before the MP15 those older switchers couldn't go too fast... the types of trucks they had didn't allow it... that's why EMD began using road trucks... they allow much faster speeds, road speeds
Have a great new week!!
You too!!! BTW I found one of your Railroad Spikes at Zehners!
@@CentralPennRailProductions so cool!
Beautiful 🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚂❤️
BEAUTIFUL AND VERY INFORMATIVE VIDEO.
Great seeing the switchers at work.
Since I started getting involved in Railfanning these beautiful and powerful Locomotives with my son. It is awesome watching clips from other areas and seeing the difference in the years of these. Awesome video!
That's cool! And yes I love the seasonal changes we get in this area. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
I never knew that they shipped coal in covered hoppers!! Cool information!
Nice to still see pups working.
Your maps are always very well done
Thanks, I enjoy making them, glad you found them helpful!
Hopefully those loaded coal cars come to the Morrisville yard this week during the day light and I can get a shot of them passing my work
Seems like they stopped running 520s and just have the local crews sort it out between Reading and Stowe and Stowe and Abrams or Morrisville. While that's kind of a nuisance I've noticed they'll sometimes pull them with GPs which is really cool as well, though I think they now use SD60Es further east.
@@CentralPennRailProductions I saw it like 2 weeks ago heading west out of Morrisville right by CP Pike during the day but I was running our excavator so I couldn’t record it
I can see why you wanted to get some of this older footage processed, this is good stuff!
Yeah, for some reason this batch turned out great, though now that I've gone through a much larger sample size I noticed there's still plenty room for improvement. The good HD-60 footage converts to 4K well for the most part, but my older DV quality stuff can only be pushed so far (none of that in this video).
Excellent footage and information. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, I enjoyed it.👍
Been a fan of your channel for many years. From Pa, to New England and now all over. The narration and maps really add to the videos too. Many thanks for the work you put into the channel. 👍👍On another note, the RBMN really seems to be a well run and fan-friendly line.
Being a native PA resident, I enjoy your videos regarding trains in the coal regions. Keep them coming.
Yes I will have plenty more as I get time to get around to them, thanks for watching!
Great video!
Thanks!
Great video.
Just classic railroading. This is a true tribute to the area. This video shows how underrated the SW class locomotives are.
Great catch of the RBMN Switchers working hard pulling those open hoppers! I'm a big fan of this railroad and the MP15 EMD's. Awesome to still see these locomotives still being a big asset to the industry. Thanks again for sharing your videos with us CPRP! Cheers from Delmar, Delaware
Hey, thanks for watching & commenting! R&N is certainly a place to see them happen. Union in Pittsburgh still uses them between the steel mills too, I need to get out and shoot one of their coke or slab trains with the MP15s.
Excellent !!! Thanks
Great footage / camera work …… narration is spot on / perfect if I may say
Thanks a lot, I appreciate it!
Excellent content 👍
It's amazing how some regional railroads able to figure it out when it comes to PSR. Fixed schedule, fast freight, no super long trains, no layoffs as Class 1's did, and better reliability. It's neat to see a great regional railroad in my homestate plus their motive power.
That was excellent!
A fun and interesting video! Thanks for posting!
You know, some people are saying the Norfolk-Southern should hire Andy Muller to straighten out the mess. He probably would want nothing to do with it if asked!
Now there's a thought LOL. They are definitely learning lessons the hard way, I just hope more good citizens don't get affected by their negligence.
@@CentralPennRailProductions And how! And today N-S had ANOTHER derailment in Ohio! Twenty cars on the ground although no fatalties and no HazMat this time. Is the once-mighty N-S turning into a house of cards? Bob and Graham Claytor must be turning in their graves! At about 1,500 RPM!
🎥Camera quality , amazing
Highball SWs! Neato!
Those 4-axle higher power locomotives really come into their own on lines like these. A lot less hard on the tracks and can still pull a nice amount at higher speeds. It is quite annoying how slow the speeds are on some lines that are really very stable.
Dear Pennsylvanians,
If you want people to be able to spell "Skookle", I suggest you change the spelling to "Skookle".
That wasn’t nice nor was it necessary and I am a “ Pennsylvanian “ and my ancestry was from the “ UK” …
When you said "1980's throwback", you weren't talking about the EMDs, you were talking about the conductor with a mullet!
Hahaha
Central penn rail productions good moring this vídeos posted filmed sataday 14 de january 2023! Estrada de ferro Carajas brazil! MA TO PA
Excellent video, what camcorder do you use?
Thanks! There's a mix of Sony AX100 and Panasonic HC-X1500 clips in here. Currently mostly use the HC-X1500.
love my swithers units
Bro you gotta dedicate a whole video to your 3058 catches
"For some reason, the big class 1s can't figure this out." They probably don't want to, short term profits.
For the class 1s, PSR is just an excuse to jack prices and skimp on maintenance.
Could those GP38-2s have been used on the PRSL?
When did you take this video?
The recent shots were from February 20 this year.
How many track so they owned
Just subscribed!!!! Nice catches!!!
Why is this a 1980s throwback? Because not much has changed since then?
See how many people are out there doing that work? That's why the Class Is won't do this stuff. Efficiency isn't actually efficiency in corpo-speak. Its less people, so they can spend less money. The actual speed and efficiacy of timetables for trains means nothing now with shareholders and capital management. As long as you can _say_ so, the bucks roll in with no effort at all.
Yep, the illusion and promise of short term quarterly gains versus actual long term vision and growth.
I believe that there are two solutions to the dilemma regarding the Class Is:
1. We break the network up into smaller, more centralized, and more precise companies that operate in specific regions (with some exceptions, including the Southern Transcon). This seems like the more logical choice.
2. We nationalize the entire US-Canada-Mexico rail network. In other words, we bring back Conrail and make it much bigger.
@@SGuySMW I agree with number one. You could essentially let the Class I's "win" so to speak, by letting them scale back to point-to-point long haul operations where they have their big trains between yards and get out of the switching business entirely. Branch lines and lesser used mains could be spun off to regional railroads who actually rely on building up business. These could be new private start ups or state run or funded railroads (think Vermont Rail System or South Branch Valley) that remain that way indefinitely or until a private short line is interested. In areas where switching customers is still required along the big railroads, you could spin those off to contractors between yards, or even Amtrak, so to speak, but for freight, where the system isn't totally nationalized but focus is put in to keep these businesses online until either a private buyer (non-class I) is interested, because the biggest problem with the large railroads is there is no accountability for what service they keep or not (except a quarterly balance sheet) often leaving customers who do want service in the dust or forced to trucking. I think the problem with Option 2 of a full nationalization or Conrail 2.0 is that could potentially lead to more removal of infrastructure deemed "redundant" that we may never get back that could be more devastating in the long run.
@@CentralPennRailProductions Exactly what I was thinking.
@@CentralPennRailProductions I agree, though, who wouldn’t want to see the Reading Blue Mountain and Northern turn into a small class 1, also as for another short line. Rock Island Rail (the revived Rock Island Railroad) will hopefully kick Union Pacific out of their old stomping grounds and hopefully we will have a sea of reborn blue and white after being gone after such a long time.
Great video !
SCHUYLKILL
Very cool!! Yeah, seeing EMD switchers handle long coal trains is certainly a treat in the 21st-century. Also, I want to thank u 4 giving me advice about the Port Road. A couple of Sunday’s ago, I went back to COLA at around 5:15 ish, and after about 45 minutes of waiting and listening to the radio, I finally got NS 632, which took me by complete surprise had it not been for the loud K5llA on the leading SD70ACE.
Another good time is about 6:00am, just about every day on my way to work in Lancaster I see a northbound coming through Columbia, and once a week (it varies) I'll see a clear signal for a southbound at the same time.
That's good news that you caught something. Apparently the schedule for H30 out of Lancaster has changed to later in the morning, so it's possible to see them between Marietta and Columbia before 10am.
Yeah. Maybe in the summer. I’ll try and get him. I also saw 595 last Wednesday at around 3pm. I sadly missed the lead engines but I saw most of the rest of the train. I was surprised to see him since I thought he usually comes early in the morning, but I did a little more research via the radio and as it turns out that’s just about the time you should expect to see him so I might go get him some other time.
Love these RBMN videos! Grew up in the Reading area and remember the colors of the Reading RR. Thanks for sharing this
No problem, glad you love them! Thanks for watching!
Like THE good old QARG
Ah yeah, good times!
The Reading and Northern is the best railroad in the United States changed my mind.
Certainly a well-run operation, no wonder Andy Muller was nominated Railroader of the year in 2022, too bad the powers to be gave it to Katie Farmer instead, not like she really did anything except help run BNSF further into the ground.
I really enjoy the RBMN content!
Thanks, and absolutely!
Nice Video
🌼🌻🇮🇳🌻🌼
Small Line switching and delivery are fun to watch. And you get that " Norman Rocwell" type of scenery
Sweet video! Always thought NS dropped the cars off at NR, learn something new every day. Looking forward to the next round of R&N vids!
PTC has resulted in very odd circumstances for interchange railroads that don't have PTC on their equipment. As such, NS limited R&N to "four trips per day" with a trip constituting as a move in a single direction, so going to Reading Yard and back would be two trips. NS tried to briefly make the drops and pickups at NRY but it didn't seem to be a satisfactory level of service or NS just got tired of burning crews and finally, for whatever reason, R&N is allowed back into Spring Street and over NS to Laurel Jct. Nearby East Penn Railroad is also allowed to Reading Yard and back. I believe (from what I heard) the only restriction for foreign trains is that they must not operate over 20 MPH when on NS but I cannot confirm that. I'll ask around.
Okay wow I didn’t know it was such a wishy-washy situation, thanks for the clarification!
Amazing video as always, looking forward to more videos on the RBMN!
Thanks! And I look forward to sharing more R&N content.
So Skookle is the correct pronunciation of Schuylkill? That's worth knowing
As far as the local dialect goes today, yes. As far as the origins of the word, I don't think so.
Did the RBM&N complete the CTC across the mainline from N. Reading to Scranton? I remember a few years ago the Lehigh gorge, to around Tamaqua I think, and from Port Clinton south were done and under signal either ABS or CTC.
Last I knew the only section not cut in was from Hometown to Jim Thorpe Junction, but it's possible it's since been completed, and if not, will be very soon thus completing CTC for the Main Line on both divisions.
Great stuff!!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼. Thanks.😊
And thank you for watching/commenting!
Wish the Temple station will still be back in good use since the BM&R ran their steam excursions in the 1980s. I wonder if they can bring it back to life in the future?
Awesome video! I love watching clips from other areas. Have a nice day 😊🌈
The yellow and green locomotives what is this railroad called???? I know that you said it in the video I'm going to have to go back and listen to it again and just curious do you know how many locomotives they have on their roster???? I love it how you show these shortline railroads in all their older locomotives I absolutely love older engines like this that's all you see on the railroads nowadays or Dash 9 variant locomotives SD 70s sd70mac ETC they're all the damn same they're different but they all look the same I'm sick of always railfanning it seemed the same locomotives just with different paint schemes I like visiting shortline railroads like this where is this located I am from the New England area Boston Massachusetts to be precise home of the Boston baked bean 🫘 if you haven't tried any homemade Boston baked beans you don't know what you're missing. It's absolutely delicious if you ever make it up in my area definitely consider trying some homemade Boston baked beans you will not be disappointed. Great video once again I'm going to share this video with a lot of my real railfan friends
Your comment on how precise RBMN operates as opposed to Class Is got straight to the point.
Great video! Excellent footage. I’ve always dug tri light signals , very cool indeed. I’m from Chicago and we don’t see this kind of action, especially with a small railroad.
10:05 I didn't think that signal would ever drop. LOL. 10:13
Great!. Well edited and narrated with information that made the video even better.
Awesome video, I need some more shortline action myslef...
Is the track supposed to bounce 5:19?
Amazing video
I love End Cabs for some weird reason
They're awesome!
Classic look.
