  • February of 2023 and I was back on another railfan road trip, bound for some more action in the Keystone State. I spent my first day on the Reading and Northern, and checked two big hitters off the bucket list: a red GP30 leader and a chase along the railroad's Susquehanna Branch. I also found myself chasing NRFF later in the day, making for yet another great visit to the RBMN. Thanks for railfanning with me, consider subscribing if you enjoyed the video!

Outstanding video! Enjoyed the videography and narration and especially the dronage over the Lehigh Gorge. I happen to have ridden all those tracks on passenger excursions and share your enthusiasm for the scenery. As a local, I must note that the preferred pronounciation for the river is Sus-kwe-hanna, not the Sus-ke-hanna you used.

I’m glad my enthusiasm is commonplace, really is a beautiful area. Thanks for the pronunciation tip as well, and I appreciate the kind words!

I've only railfanned Reading and Northern a couple times before (primarily the excursions) but it's a ton of fun. They've got an incredible classic railroad design for their buildings and signs and they're also very railfan friendly. They do have their limits on where you can go but they are much more lenient than any Class I railroad meaning you can get really nice shots. They have great paint schemes for their locomotives, great horns, and as far as I can tell, no e-bells (outside of the ex. NS OCS f unit) (I'm not really a fan of e-bells). I'm hoping to go up there again at some point.

If you include Conrail, technically there's 8 predecessor railroads because of the Dunmore Running Track to Schott Glass is former Erie. It's only 1.7 miles long but it counts! I really like that map though, because R&N is one of a few regional railroads that actually has so much cohesive history (btw there would be a small section of CR between the RDG and LV above Haucks where Conrail built the Lofty Connection in the late 80s to join the salvaged RDG and LV branches to Hazleton, also a small section of PRR around Auburn for the Auburn Running Track).
Anyway, man you work fast, I'm still trying to catch up on R&N footage from 2020 & 2021. Believe if or not I haven't shot the Mehoopany job yet, but I love the harmonic rocking they achieve up there. Glad you had a good trip though, I remember that week, it was cold (mostly from the wind). And I think you're in the minority about being excited to catch those red leaders, I'll leave it at that... lol
Looking forward to the rest of the videos!

Thanks a lot man, it was an awesome trip…PA sure is rich in railfanning opportunities. That’s funny you say I work fast, took me two months to put the first video up! Hopefully the rest will roll a little smoother, but good things take time.
I really thought everybody loved the red GP’s, that’s interesting you say I’m an outlier. Either way I loved it. You definitely have to get over and get the Mehoopany train though, it’s a really fun chase and can be accomplished with a lot of time in the day left as well. And I figured I didn’t get it all right with the trackage map, it’s a complicated system to a foreigner so thanks for clearing that up!

@@FloridaRailfan For a non-local you did an A+ job, it's very complicated to piece together over the decades, even using maps, so much as moved on the nitty gritty branches since a lot of stuff relocated when mines started to dig up new sites.
I think the reason why the red units are so unpopular now is because they faded. R&N can run a world class steam program yet can't repaint the fleet lol. From what I understand, the Fast Freight units as well as any of the units recently painted into the green & yellow scheme have had a professional application done, so they won't fade like all the roller painted units roaming around.

Well thank you I appreciate it, I enjoy having geographical context and try and make it all as useful but general as possible. As for the red engines, I did notice they are faded, but suppose that’s all part of the shortline charm! Next on the hit list is a green leader on NRFF…I’ve seen ex-CSX and ex-NS, third times a charm!

Those boxcars were truly rocking and rolling. Some of the shots in this video had me pretty tense, given how wobbly they were (and how close the camera was to the track). Nice work as always!

Another great video! Did you get rid of the Jeep? ALSO, i hope you are carrying some type of defensive device, I strongly advise POM pepper spray. Being out in the back country and alone can put your personal security at risk. Be safe and keep the great videos coming!
