Reading and Northern PNEX: A Rare Move of All Four F-Units

  • On January 14th, 2024, the Reading and Northern Railroad conducted a move of their four F-unit diesel locomotives on a Port Clinton Extra Train (PNEX). This move consisted of transporting F-units #270 and #275 to Jim Thorpe, and F-units #250 and #251 to Penobscot for storage. Throughout the previous several years, #250 and #251 have been stored behind the Port Clinton diesel locomotive shop. However, over the past few months, they have been moved around the Port Clinton yard in preparation for this move to Penobscot.
#250 and #251 are two F-7a units that were both built in 1953 by EMD and served first for the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad, and then for the Southern Railroad of New Jersey, with #250 formerly numbered #727 and #251 numbered #728. #270 and #275 have an extensive history, but were most recently of Norfolk Southern heritage, being purchased by Reading and Northern in 2019, and frequently appear on special passenger excursions.
At this point in time, there do not appear to be any plans to restore #250 and #251 to operation, making this move of all four F-units together potentially once in a lifetime!
Additionally, I completed this chase as a collaborative effort with fellow RUclipsr and my good friend ‪@JamieMakin‬! I'd like to thank her for providing several shots for this video, especially the arrival shots in Jim Thorpe and Penobscot. Be sure to check out her channel to see her video of this special move!!
Although I did not collab with him, Ian from Lehigh River Subdivision (‪@LRSX‬ ) also chased this move from Port Clinton to Jim Thorpe. Be sure to check out his video to see some epic shots, many of which neither Jamie nor I were able to capture!!
Please enjoy this rare catch of all four Reading and Northern F-Units together!

The two unrestored F-units are both original Bessemer and Lake Erie locomotives, I wish they could be restored to their BLE colors. The BLE was the first major railroad to dieselize and no Bessemer and Lake Erie diesels are preserved.

A proper B&LE butterknife paint scheme would be amazing. One of the best looking of all time. Nose herald and all. Do you know what the B&LE road numbers were of these two units? I was assuming they were the old Western Allegheny 727 and 728 units but not sure.

That was excellent! We used to hang around bridge #1 over the Cuyahoga river in Cleveland, Oh in the mid 70's. PC was still using alot of F-7's and 9's on it's freights,
got to climb around on them in the dead line at Collinwood. Seems like a life-time ago, now!

The Southern Railroad of New Jersey! So THAT'S where those two F-Units with the bady deteriorated paint came from. The one with the NYO&W paint scheme looked very familiar as bad as it looks. I had no idea Reading & Northern owned them now.
Maybe they'll be restored in the future as time and money permit, maybe they being held as parts donors for the other ex-Norfolk-Southern units? Only time will tell.
R&N #270 and #275 were so extensively rebuilt by N-S that in effect they're GP38's under the hood. That's a good thing, they'll have very long service lives ahead of them.
Great chase folks! Thanks for posting!

    • @PANortheasternRailfan
      @PANortheasternRailfan  5 месяцев назад +1

Thanks! The trackage was originally Conrail, however before that it was composed of the Reading and the CNJ. The reading owned the line from Port Clinton to Haucks (Hometown), and then the CNJ owned the tracks to Jim Thorpe from Hometown. Then heading through the gorge to Penobscot, that was the Lehigh Valley Railroad. There is some jointed rail yet but the system is being changed to continuous welded rail over the past few years.

according to some better knowledged railrfans on the various facebook pages, either 250 or 251 is planned to get a restoration at some point. The R&N is only going to restore one and use the other as a parts engine for the locomotive that is being restored. Because why restore an engine in poor condition when the other one is in better condition. However as to when this is happening is unknown. But given this info was said by railfans, I'm hesitant to believe this move is that restoration or if such a restoration is ever going to happen

Well this is sad news this means they won’t be restored to lash up with the ex No Steam units Andy bought. Otherwise they’d have stayed in PN.

It would be nice if the Reading line could be connected with Philadelphia, as a passenger route, not just freight. My friends and I will never go to Reading to ride. (Vandalism to our cars).

250 & 251 look like "pre-scrap"! Keep the Steam alive, who needs diesels?
