Wow, I just made my first "real" blender model ever by following this tutorial! You really made my day. I'd been struggling with blender for a while (and mostly failing), but I needed a cave for the AnyRPG Engine starter kit and this tutorial was simple enough to follow that I succeeded and am very happy with the result!
I had a problem with the shortcuts you take in the Node Editor panel. I solved the problem by activating Node Wrangler into the Input preferences of Blender . Thank you a lot for this tutorial, it is great and the final result looks awesome!
I've had the same problem and your tip saved my day, thanks a lot! Also, after activating Node Wrangler, I still couldn't find the Shader option in the menu, so I searched a little and realized the problem was that I was using Blender Render (in top of the screen) and for this to show, we need to use Cycles Render (the same used in the tutorial), so if anyone is having the same issue, that's the answer. Thanks a lot Mirko, and also thanks Derek for this great tutorial.
For those who can't find the option to flip mesh normals , To flip normals in Blender, enter edit mode and select the faces with normals you want flipped. Choose “Mesh” from the top menu and then find “Normals” and expand the options. Select “Flip” and normals of the selected faces will be flipped.
lmfao - Hey, I made an Air Duct, lets call it a day. )) Hope you see this comment! Best tutorial ever! Like Bob Ross with humor! Loved it and thank you!
@@DerekElliott It will be a godsent! If you please - a tutorial on best evee render settings, and also can you please tell me why my cycle preview works slower and looks horrile in 2.8? It works perfect in 2.79
This is, by far, the best tutorial on cave construction, on y/t. I really enjoy this tutorial, but the earlier Blender version used, makes it difficult for me to complete the project. Any plans on an updated version? Thanks for the great tips!
Ahadh Ahmedh you can apply the modifiers and export the cave mesh to a .fbx or other format depending on your needs. Not sure about how the texture would best be exported though since it's procedural
Is it possible (could you give some hints) how to work with it further, to cut it in modular pieces? (for later use as game assets?)I assume it should be possible to cut this cave halls in pieces, and after some remaking creating modules for making whole complexes of caves?
Iza Bella if you apply all the modifiers you can then go in to edit mode and select an area, press P, separate by selection. Then you can save parts individually as a FBX or whatever
w00p w00p 666th like! Cave of the Beast I'm going to try this tomorrow evening, but attempt to have the Voronoi running in vertical loops rather than portaying horizontal stratification
At 12:20 I am having trouble switching the Shader box from Diffuse to Principled, because SHIFT-S does not seem to work in Blender 2.80 Release Candidate 3. I can delete the Diffuse Shader and add a Principled Shader, but I cannot change the shader type. I cannot seem to find anything relevant in Google either. I feel stupid. Can anyone help?
Hi Derek, I'm going to try this out. Can you tell me what version of blender you used for this? I have several versions DL'd but would like to use the same version you used - it's easier to follow along. I'm pretty sure it's some variant of 2.7. Thanks and thanks for the tutorial. Best.
Great Tutorial, but im stuck with adding the new Material to the cave. Im completly new to blender and dont know how to open the second preview window.
If you click and drag in the corners of Windows you can split them. After that you can use a little drop-down to change the window to a shader editor (2.8) aka node editor (2.7x)
Im gun a make one of these but jm gunna want to add a model of a person trying to round out like theres an expolsion in that light sided area.... any advice on doing that???
That would be awesome! Once you have the cave you can put your person model inside it and get the camera set up really cool then add any other effects you want.
@@DerekElliott thats the plan but im very new to rendering... i only recently upgraded my computer to allow me to be able to do it ... so still iffy on the what goes where for good lighting in this type of scene.... the very first tjing i want to render with that cave setting had a golden shinny style armour and orher colpurs donubhappen to have a lighting techneqe to make the humnoid model made the scene best i can????
I'm using Blender 2.80 and cannot figure out how to get the procedural texture to show on the object. Blender creates the texture but refuses to add it to the model.
Are you talking about where I added the material? These options would be at the top by default in 2.8 if the window is set to a shader editor. Material can also be added on the right side tabs
@@DerekElliott oh lol now it makes sense. also I want to connect this cave to an other map I made for my game that I'm making with my brother. how would I go about doing that?
One criticism and it is a visual criticism, when you are adding procedural textures you fidget with your cursor and positioning of the upper right view constantly. In blunt terms, it's fucking annoying as hell. Let go of the mouse or learn to stop fidgeting with the pointer and dragging left right, top down to make it easier on the human eye. Other than that, a very enjoyable narration and video to learn.
10:54 how did you "turn off" the lights in the viewport, for exception of the one you manually put in there? I cannot understand that and i cannot proceed with the tutorial X(. You just say "bleeah" instead of explaining that step sadly...
A very nice Bob Ross style tutorial
Marco Robbesom best compliment ever
I wanted to make the same comment! whaha
With a touch 👌 of Mathew McConaughey maybe?🤷🏼♂️
At 1:25 in the video, it's actually CONTROL and RIGHT clicking in Blender 2.8. Awesome video, thank you!
Exactly right. Thanks John!
Very enjoyable tutorial. Informative, easy to follow, relaxed and friendly presentation. Looking forward to more. Thanks.
Philip Arrowsmith thanks Philip! Really happy you enjoyed it!

Dude, absolute legend, thanks for this, perfect for VR isolation
Good idea
Been using this program for so long, and still learnt that you can ctrl + left click to extrude to mouse. That'll save me tons of key presses.
Ah yes great trick
i sometimes watch these tutorials for meditation. thanks derek!

Ah yes I've seen that as a common issue too. I think new versions of blender don't have the blender render option.
Derek, I love your sense of humor

I've been trying to make an air-duct for AGES! This was just what I needed
So happy you found this secret trick
6 years later, I finally gave up on ever finding a good duct tutorial, and instead tried my luck on a cave tutorial!
Exactly what I was looking for. Great tutorial!
Amazing! I need to make a cave for one of my creative prompts, can't wait to give it a try. Thank you, thank you.
Of course, best of luck!
A few things have changed, but still a really helpful video up in 2020. Thanks!

the best tutorial

Will do, Jay!
Thank you for such a nice tutorial...
Voronoi Texture is kinda different now in blender. Do you an alternative or a new method ?
really cool ty I really like it
10/10 air duct tutorial
Very cool man! Would like to see more vids
Ahadh Ahmedh I definitely will make more! What are you interested in learning more about?
Some stuff like labs, apartments etc.
Hey dude, what's the best format to export this?
Ahadh Ahmedh you can apply the modifiers and export the cave mesh to a .fbx or other format depending on your needs. Not sure about how the texture would best be exported though since it's procedural
that is an ASMR worthy voice :o
🤩
Wow good tut bro! Thx!

Absolutely! Make it as big and cavernous as you like!

Enable the NODE WRANGLER add-on. Should come with 2.8. just go to preferences, add-ons, and search/enable. It has a lot of other features too

Hi - I've done everything and applied the shaders but my cave is still black and white, how did you get back to colour?
Check your shader editor to be sure it's all linked up and you use color in your color ramp

GRACIAS!!!!
De nada
Can you tell me the name of the aap
im having trouble with the shader. I copied everything you did and it only came out as brown
not a single line or indent in the ground NOTHING. just plain brown color
