It's exactly 5 years since I uploaded this video. I remember after the first week I was really excited because it had reached about eight thousand views. Then: people happened. People all over the world, each having that sweet, private moment of discovery, and then telling everyone they knew, on their social media and blogs. A few weeks later, celebrities from Stephen Fry to Tommy Lee were sharing it. (They always catch up eventually!) Next thing I knew I was sitting on the couch on national TV breakfast news, nervously explaining why I was happy for the love but actually, no, I didn't want a record deal! Eleven million views later, this video has taken me all over the world, from Australia to Mongolia. It's been like floating through Willy Wonka's tunnel at a million miles an hour, until every sense is overloaded. Now, I am calm (relatively) and settling into a new life with my baby, but writing new songs and getting ready to take them back on the road next year. To me today, this video is a symbol of what we can do together, our minds and wills linked by technology. We can sink down, sure, we can post mindless abuse, we can seek petty confrontation from the safety of our sofas. But, we can also raise up, we can use our collective power to raise up other people, people we believe in. We can transform democracy, our societies. Direct action to change our world is no longer something we have to start alone, cautiously seeking out allies. When the media tells you the internet only empowers predators and terrorists, it's because they are afraid. We don't need them any more, telling us what to think, who to hate, what to buy, how to vote. I am small, but we are legion. Weakness is not your weakness.

I've heard this song something like 50 times. Never actually listened to the lyrics. That's not a bad thing, but now I hear this lyric... and you're right, it's golden. I'm an amateur strength athlete and I have been doing BJJ for a while now, but one of the main reasons I do BJJ is so I can feel weak, so I can understand what it is like in reality because some people *CAN* overcome a simple strength advantage through skill and experience. It's a humbling experience that is made visceral when someone takes your back and starts choking you and there's not a damn fucking thing you can do about it, even if you are literally 5 times stronger than the guy. Weakness is not your weakness... the idea is fantastic any way you apply it - and it can be applied in so many ways.
Remember when the video of the cover got so popular people started praising the guy who made the cover and he was like "wut?? I didn't write that! You thought I wrote that!?"
Laughed out loud when you started singing because I couldn't believe you were actually about to sing. How the hell can you even concentrate on everything you're doing with the guitar and still sing at the same time...? Incredible. Amazing song.
I rarely use the term masterpiece, since it's a watered down term people throw around carelessly. I found this song the year it came out and it planted a seed deep in my mind. Whenever I feel down, like the flower that seed grew into is withering, I come back to this song and it waters the soil, giving life to it again. It's a calm, beautiful but also extremely exciting song. To me, a masterpiece.
One of the most beautiful guitar compositions I have ever come across. In my honest opinion, you are probably the most original guitar player of our time. Your playing is so full of life and spirit, and what's incredible in my opinion is that, even though you have tremendous technical abilities, your music never strays into that "look at what I can do" territory, to which so many players succumb. I salute you, my friend. I am envious as heck, as well, but I am eternally grateful for the inspiration and the beauty you keep providing with your music.
Well said LicknRiff. In my opinion every tone or sound he does, he does to push the song and not his ego. And that is, what makes him great too. The song consists of unique melodies and harmoics that cover the unique technics.
@@renzo3939 dude what... lol. I love toes in but you know I think this is like beauty. Lol this is like the human experience. Idk m8. I Absolutely love both these guys' music. I've never heard another song like this in my life. The composition of it alone is genius. Everytime the song ends, I just need to hear it again. Thank you for making this beautiful work of art for everyone to enjoy.
This is by far one of the most intricately beautiful compositions on guitar ever written and performed. 12 yrs later this still blows my mind every single time I watch and listen.
Music is literally flowing through this man. He’s just a vessel. This is godsend and a level of talent that you see maybe only a few times in a lifetime. Amazing doesn’t quite describe this. This is damn near superhuman.
Are you kidding me? This level of coordination is beyond my imagination. I haven't seen such an impressive peace of art in a long time if ever. Your brain must be an interesting companion.
Holy shit man... I've been playing guitar for 11 years, seen all kinds of amazing guitar players in my lifetime, impressed by many, idolized a few, but this is the first time I've ever seen a guitarist incorporate constantly tuning and detuning keys in the MAIN riff of the song with such precision that the notes are not a single cent above or below the note.
RUclips Comments Suck The detuning/retuning are made possible by the Keith Tuners (originally designed for banjo) which allow two preset notes per string. This is an amazing example of them being used on guitar. Clarence White, Waylon Jennings and others have used them too. Adrian Legg (UK guitarist) uses 6 of them!
Karol Vlogpl My comment had nothing to do with arguing about fingerstyle technique, which is quite fucking obvious. You jump in to point out the obvious and then top it off by saying "it's not that hard, I can do it, hold my beer" just to get attention? Calm down son.

And an excellent song. singing at the same time! Get outta here! Some of what you, Jon Gomm, do is impossible - the hammer on fretboard sequences alone are just ... well... listen again. On repeat ...
I've had this video saved for years and am still stirred by deep and profound emotions as I watch both the talent and skill this gent possesses. This video is now 11 years old, and although Jon Gromm isn't a household name, he's a name I'll remember for this incredible musical experience that he brought to life.
This could potentially be the most beautiful song ever written. Usually when something is this technically impressive, it’s unlistenable for long periods of time. Jon Gomm is the exception to that rule.
This is how someone who learns music through self-discovery instead of books and teachers sounds at a competent level: unique and universal. When you forget everything you know and actually start searching for more and more pleasing ways to produce noise, you will eventually end up sounding both original and enjoyable..
There will always be a teacher, even if you're not asking for explicitly... Right now, this guy is our teacher. If you're offered a means of bettering yourself in some way, even if it's not the most convencional, make an effort to use it because the only one limiting us is ourselves
He learned music at a music college and I met him at the same college when he returned to do a masterclass there back in 2006ish. This guy is amazing but had plenty of 'books and teachers' along the way, nothing wrong with a 'real' education!

The masses prefer watching hot young people, regardless of level of talent. Otherwise classical musicians and guys like Gomm would be the rich 'mainstream superstars'

All three comments above are true. We live in an upside down world. It was a joy to see, hear and appreciate. Thank you Gomm. I will look for some way to make donation .
Facts! 💯
"weakness is not your weakness" is one of the most powerful lines of lyric I have heard in years. hits me super hard
I have had the same feeling many times when listening to this
It gave me goosebumps along with the song
True that. One of the biggest truths I've ever heard also.
Very deep, indeed.
My guitar watches this video when I'm out of the house.
Love this comment hahaha 😂
Me too. ^^
Now that's funny!
Guitar porn. 😂
😂😂
First heard this when it barely had a few thousand views and I come back regularly, what a masterpiece.
Remember when the video of the cover got so popular people started praising the guy who made the cover and he was like "wut?? I didn't write that! You thought I wrote that!?"
"You are what you grow into, you're not what you were."
(Thank you for reminding me so beautifully ♡)
That's for his plant not u....
Jk
@templategaming275 your a fool to think that
Playing 2 melodies + drum beat + awesome singing = Jon Gomm. Simply amazing~!
Valerian Aldo + bass
And bending the pitch! Crazy
+ dancing
My non musician mind i just wonders HOW!!! And loved it.
He needs nothing else to make a full harmonized song, what a *genius*
And he sings too! Sweet jesus!
That was my thought when I first heard him. As if his playing wasn't impressive enough.
I wonder how he keeps the beat
I Think vocals are overdubbed...there is a high vocal part and a low vocal part. Am i wrong?
@@degreplayspiano I think he runs the vocals through an octave pedal here.
@@svartsjokolade Yes, i have watched again the video and i think you are right
I dedicate this song to my friend Brian Keen, he introduced me to Jon Gomm many years ago now, RIP Brian!
This man could pinch a diamond into dust with those fingers.
Fun fact, diamonds are actually quite brittle. They are however extremely scratch resistant, but still more brittle than you might think.
@@Potatis1337 I actually didn't know that. Wow lol thanks for the facts.
Laughed out loud when you started singing because I couldn't believe you were actually about to sing. How the hell can you even concentrate on everything you're doing with the guitar and still sing at the same time...? Incredible. Amazing song.
Jon uses every single part of his brain.
The secret is that he doesn't concentrate on it; he lets it flow through him
I rarely use the term masterpiece, since it's a watered down term people throw around carelessly. I found this song the year it came out and it planted a seed deep in my mind. Whenever I feel down, like the flower that seed grew into is withering, I come back to this song and it waters the soil, giving life to it again. It's a calm, beautiful but also extremely exciting song. To me, a masterpiece.
and it’s wrote after a plant too. damn.
Samesies, except you lashed out the poetic articulation 🤣
Same here :)
This guy is seriously so unbelievably talented. Enjoying this piece of art for the first time.
You please make 'thousand years' by fingerstyle lesson.please
Well said LicknRiff. In my opinion every tone or sound he does, he does to push the song and not his ego. And that is, what makes him great too. The song consists of unique melodies and harmoics that cover the unique technics.
tosin abasi is more original imo
@@renzo3939 dude what... lol. I love toes in but you know I think this is like beauty. Lol this is like the human experience. Idk m8. I Absolutely love both these guys' music. It's hard to say who's what. His music is more methodical and rhythmically insane lol tbh. Idk. John's music is like more tribal and earthy idk how to explain. But both are musicians I'd strive to be more like. Hope you see the depth of this song.
i have the "look at what i can do" attitude. lol. Its the source of my fire.
Seeing as that cover has been going viral, maybe now would be a good time to share the original with your friends.

I also saw that cover which was pretty cool but thankfully it let me down a trail to the original as well so I reposted the original
Sam B There's been a cover with a few million views floating around Facebook for a while now. Sorry I can't be more helpful than that!
Mark Atkins of that black guy, he plays amazingly too
Judging from your style I think you could do an exceptional cover or 'Lovebirds - want you in my soul'
Glad I discovered you through that cover. Looking forward to hearing the rest of your stuff now.
*Lyrics*
Born in your tiny prison cell
A million times smaller than you are
One single drop, and you're risen up
Afraid of the dark
Bloom
Bloom
You crack up through the pavement
In super, super slow motion
Though your back is gently breaking
You reach for the light
Bloom
Bloom
We can see everything
We can hear everything
We can see everything
We can hear everything
Weakness is not your weakness
You are what you grow into
You're not what you were
Bloom
Bloom
You know, every time I've listened to this song, I just thought he was singing a melody with oooooh. But seeing the word bloom as the lyric makes a lot more sense haha.

I am blown away by the sheer talent required to pull off something this mechanically difficult, AND sing beautifully at the same time
More beautiful live. I didnt know of him till 2015 and live with Don Ross in Canada

Every so often I come back to this video and am amazed all over again.
More than just impressive .... the melodies, the harmonies, the percussion .... all masterfully composed on the guitar. Absolutely beautiful.
Are you kidding me? This level of coordination is beyond my imagination. I haven't seen such an impressive peace of art in a long time if ever. Your brain must be an interesting companion.
I was already mystified and then he started singing too. Holy shit.
FUCKING RIGHT
Damn, yes
My exact thought process!
Yep, that's the beauty of having absolute pitch.
Akis Mylordos He flipped my mind with that one too.
Akis Mylordos Thats fingerstyle Percussive its not hard but you need how to slap or something else
Karol Vlogpl My comment had nothing to do with arguing about fingerstyle technique, which is quite fucking obvious. You jump in to point out the obvious and then top it off by saying "it's not that hard, I can do it, hold my beer" just to get attention? Calm down son.
10+ years and still unbeatable
❤❤❤
Jon Gomm is yet another amazing musical talent that I would have not discovered had RUclips not been around.. Cheers!

This is still one of the most outrageously beautiful pieces ever composed on a guitar. Most songs can't even compare to your love of this passionflower's beauty. Thank you Jon, genuinely.
100% agreed
This video was posted almost 10 years ago and it's still one of the most impressive things I've ever seen. I absolutely love this song so much, and the video really shows how much passion was put into it. What an incredibly talented human. 12/10 every single time.
I held in a piss for 6 minutes to watch this. Worth it.
I have watched this so many times. Its just so amazing in every sense of the word. Every single time it blows me away. I have been playing guitar for 25 years now and have been told that I am good.....sometimes I feel that its even true...then I see this and know that there is so much more. Maybe another 25 years and I'll be half as good which honestly...I would be happy for lol. You sir, are an inspiration and I thank you for sharing such beauty with the world.

I remember when this came out and I felt that it was a reinvention of how you can perform as a solo-artist without a loop pedal. I came across it again on a top acoustic guitar songs list. It still rings true and deserves credit for inspiring a new generation of musicians.
Hard to believe that some 'people' have had the audacity, nay, the blind and deaf ignorance and stupidity to thumbs-down this incredible talent.
i disliked it, because its too peaceful for my taste. he has talent, no doubt about that. Its just the genre. I prefer more noise and anger.

people dislike because they can't relate. That's why they have something missing in their lives/souls or they're bitter and jaded having tried and failed to become artists thus not wanting to acknowledge uniqueness and naturally gifted/blessed people such as jon gomm whom are sharing love as oppose to spreading hate.

Jon Gomm is a Phenomenon!!
Went to see him live yesterday, I can honestly say it was one of the most captivating concerts I've been to.
After so many years, this is still one of my favorite songs.
I rarely close my eyes while watching somebody play the guitar so well; this is very good music.
As a once reasonable guitarist, (I'm nearly 70) one of the most jaw-droppingly awesome performances I have ever seen, not excluding Clapton, Jansch, May or Beck...
Justin King is another exception, you should give some of his stuff a listen
This is how someone who learns music through self-discovery instead of books and teachers sounds at a competent level: unique and universal. When you forget everything you know and actually start searching for more and more pleasing ways to produce noise, you will eventually end up sounding both original and enjoyable..
