I dedicated MONTHS to learning this song a few years ago. And while I technically could play it, I didn't understand what was going on musically. It was basically just a party trick. I had no way to translate the practice into anything else. I also realized I still didn't sound nearly as good as Mr. Emmanuel here because I lacked something crucial that I never considered. Dynamics. I was only focused on playing the right notes on time and never had any real feeling behind what I was playing. In short it just sounded boring. It's amazing how you can improve your own playing in ways you didn't expect just by hearing the greats play. I'll never be better than Tommy, but I can be better than I was last week.

    • @VopiscusGuitar
      @VopiscusGuitar 9 месяцев назад +6

Yeah, stage one is to just memorize the 5million-note sequences. The dynamics will usually bring themselves in unconsciously over time, after you've gotten comfortable with not having to constantly think about where your hand has to be next.
It carries over into other songs, though, for sure. You learn something that tough and then go back and play an easy song you know, and you'll play the easy one 10× smoother than before

I doubt he "learned" to play it. He probably started with a simple arrangement and kept expanding it and developed an expanded piece over time as he got bored with the way he could already play it like a machine. How would he learn to play something that he arranged? He just slowly expanded the arrangement most likely. Just helps that he is a monster player haha.

While I agree that it was some amazing guitar work, and Tommy is talented, I think you are understating the significance of what he did when you called it a nice "twist". This isn't a "twist" at all, it's a completely different song. Sure it has some of the same notes, but the feeling of the song, the soul of it, is far removed from the original. I, personally, would of felt better if he renamed it and put an "inspired by Classical Gas" subtitle. I say this because i was searching for Classical Gas, clicked on this video because it looked interesting and polished, and get this jarring, completely unexpected piece. It was a lot like drinking what I though was soda, and it's lemonade. Lemonade isn't bad, just so unexpected it almost hurts.

Me too, just a very slightly longer time frame, and with rap, most heavy metal and most country being exceptions, here are TONS of excellent musicians out there. I listen to primarily Jazz and classical now, but here is some stuff in various categories, genres, instruments, etc. that you might enjoy. I can give you a LOT more if you are interested, as I spend WAYYY too much time on YT now, and have a whole slew of artists in my playlist (it's public feel free to look if you like some of these). It includes many more categories and artists than these. These range from (criminally) couple of thousand views types, into the millions level. Virtually all of these artists do several types of music. Here, from solo to big band, and world touring to virtually unheard:
Synth, real time expansive improv covers, listen to a requested song, first hearing when they request it if he doesn't know it, on a stupid phone, and instantaneously makes some INCREDIBLE music out of it, five seconds or less later (the first is a ten level deep loop) created on the spot. I gave you two very different approaches, from the same video, the second is just a non looped piano invention of another request. This guy is an absolutely world class talent. His channel has gone from the 70 or so thousand to now half million and climbing RAPIDLY, and he actually deserves it, like Tommy.
Frank Tedesco: He wrote a few compilations, not really slottable into a single genre lots of influences, jazz, Spanish, classical, movie, game, etc. In the first I put you in where he's listening to the song, so you can see what he's working from, and what results. Just stop at the end of the song and then go to the next, unless you want to listen to the whole video :-):
      ruclips.net/video/4zMLaix8Zto/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/4zMLaix8Zto/видео.html
Here is an etude (pro level exercise pieces) he wrote. I love the incidental at thirty seven seconds...always 'Easter eggs' throughout:
      ruclips.net/video/-vKVQt-DlPc/видео.html
Fifth Street: Fairly Odd Parents (they do all kinds of Jazz oriented covers)
Home Free: Most anything of theirs, this is fun, a sea shanty mix up, listen to the beat boxer on the one that starts "Heave her up and away we'll go ...". He is the best in the world, IMO at actually doing it VERY musically. He does an air drumming solo that is incredible, and he plays the drums along with it, accurately.
I've seen a couple of drummers comment that he must be a drummer. I don't think he is, but not sure:
      Home Free, shanties:
      ruclips.net/video/lLGLUSzzuWU/видео.html
      Fifth Street, Fairly Odd parents:
      ruclips.net/video/2khVxhkvFBs/видео.html
Got To Get You Into My Life". Jazz knob turned up about 75%, this arrangement has some really great sections, as most all of theirs do. And the treble section is stellar. When the alto gets low, it's like being wrapped in a soft blanket, what a sound, and the soprano enters the stratosphere a couple of times. She can go a lot higher, I think, IIRC, but she's getting up there pretty good here:
      ruclips.net/video/6yf3uv9XUDY/видео.html
Here's a couple of semi Big Band pieces. The first is Dave Wekl and Jay Oliver drumming with a host of instrumental and vocal session folks (I think). The energy in this thing starts at the ceiling and then rises like a homesick Martian:
      ruclips.net/video/4RS5RsSPssw/видео.html
This is a Ukrainian/Russian group that does Chicago, better than Chicago, IMO. They didn't even speak English when this was done, and the diction is better than most of the English speaking soloists I've heard. They tour the world now. One of the band members recorded and mixed this. I would love to find a DVD A level flac of it. It sounds spectacular even on the YT garbage audio format. I think one reason i like this more than Chicago is the recording. After this, go play the Chicago recording, and you'll see what I mean. Night and day, the old recording is absolutely dull by comparison. Thirty years of tech doesn't hurt, but neither does a guy that keeps the post effects to nothing to next to nothing, and lets the music through. And uses some killer audio equipment.

Here is one you just have to see to believe. If this doesn't entertain you, I give up. It was a recommendation, and in the opening I thought "this'll be funny", shortly thereafter the thought was Dayam, this is awesome. Hang on for the ride:
The bridge about 2/3rds of the way through is just killer. This is just plain weird, and a lot of fun:

No one has more fun playing the guitar than Tommy Emmanuel. And boy can he play. All the best guitarists in the world, happily bow down to him with a smile. No shame, no trepidation. Nobody would be foolish enough to pretend they were on his level. And he's such a nice guy about it. Never a hint of pridefulness. Just joy in the music.

I tried to play like all my idols for years and years.
I stopped doing that and just focused on what I wanted to convey. Passion beats speed every day.
Think of music as a language, every note is a word. Or rather the feeling you get from saying that word. Now string all your words into sentences. Bend and slide and mute them as you would change the tone of your voice. ❤️❤️ Fun fact. If you slightly bend every note you can bypass the restrictions of the frets and be able to play a lot more freely in between the notes. Or use a slide.

Hope you're still playing. Even 5 months is not that long to have been playing, but even 5 years is not that long in the grand scheme of things. Music is a lifelong pursuit.

By having calluses for fingers as opposed to simply having calluses on his fingers.
