Go to CAAS. Chet Atkins Appreciation Society Convention in Nashville. Second weekend in July....... Tommy and many more of like mind...... The best pickers in the world all in the same place for 4 days. Full acces to shows and entertainers. Just go!!!!
When I have had the crappiest of work days, I walk into my home and turn on the big speakers and play this version of this song by this man. It makes everything better, IMMEDIATELY! ❤
Merle Travis is generally credited with starting this style playing. Along came Chet Atkins and took it to a whole new level. Then there was Tommy Emmanuel who took it even father. Tommy is not only a "Certified Guitar Player" but is a fantastic entertainer . I saw him perform live in Fort Myers, FL in March of 2015. I was about 10 feet from the stage so I could not only hear but see his every move. I thought I was dreaming. Made me want to go home a break both my guitars but I didn't. I did make up my mind to learn the boom chick method. Man it is tough and I have been playing 50 years. I've been trying for 3 months 3 and 4 times a day and every time I stop thinking about my thumb the dumb thing stops picking. I've heard it takes years just to become bad at it and I believe it so.
Henry Dunn Please take a look at Tommy's Fingerstyle Milestones instructional set! We've had great feedback from players who swear that they never thought they would be able to fingerpick but was able to using those lessons. It was a labour of love, specifically made for people like you. Good luck! TE Admin
Tommy Emmanuel I've been going through Tommy's Fingerstyle Milestones set. I am up to video #35 and this morning it finally sunk in as to what I was supposed to be doing. One of my problems is that I have developed a LOT of bad habits trying to teach myself to finger-pick over the past 50 years and they are tough to break. But it is starting to make sense. I have a LOOOOOG way to go yet but I can now see the light thanks to Tommy's instructions. I purchased the download plus the DVD. I haven't received the DVD yet but it should be here any day If anyone is serious about learning Tommy's style I highly recommend they buy this.
+Lars Olsen Hi Lars. I have found and watched a lot of the videos on RUclips. I even found a way to save on my computer some of the better videos so I can refer back to them. You can't do this with Google Chrome but the Firefox browser has an add-on that will allowing the saving of RUclips videos. The most help that I have had is with Tommy's "Fingerstyle Milestones" I am now up to about 45 videos out of 95. I am into the really hard part now and that is trying to pick with the first 3 fingers independent of the thumb. Two days ago I finally did it for the first time. But the next day I could NOT do it when I practiced that day. I finally gave up for the day, I just wasn't in the right frame of mind. A couple of times I've hit a wall so to speak and had to stop trying for a day or two. Then when I go back to what I was trying it finally sinks into my head and then into my fingers. I can't wait until I practice today as I practice 4 and sometimes 5 times a day. Granted there will only be one Tommy but this is something that I have always wanted to achieve ever since I bought my Gretsch Country Gentleman. I have always been a fan of Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed. The first time I ever heard of Tommy Emmanuel was when Chet Atkins mentioned his name on a record that I had of Chet and Les Paul. They were "clowning around" naming their favorite guitar players and Chet named Tommy. I thought at the time I had better check this guy out if Chet thinks that much of him. Some times it's very slow going but I feel I am making progress and having a ball doing it. So as long as my wife's ears can stand it it's onward and upwards. When I die they will probably have to pry my 1964 Silvertone Jaguar out of my hands so they can close the casket lid. I sold the Country Gentleman a long time ago and now down to only 2 guitars but my favorite is the 1964 Silvertone as that was my first electric I bought from my nephew in about 1967 for $50. It still to this day sounds great even with almost 70 year old arthritic fingers picking it... LOL
I have watched this video a number of times, and as a really poor guitar player, I’ve marveled at Tommys technical skills, his harmonies, his mastery of every genre from country, classical, jazz and more. I’ve watched in awe at his synchronization between his right and left hands, and how he can simultaneously play the bass line, rhythm and lead. His melodic fantasies are genius, and the depth of feeling is bottomless. But now I just put on my headset, close my eyes, I don’t watch him play, as it distracts me from the sheer beauty of just listening to Tommy. He is a true gift to the planet.
Im an old man and this has always been my favorite song from my favorite movie and for me nothing will ever equal the scene of Judy singing it. That said this is my favorite instrumental version played with respect and sensitivity and a nod to Chet. Thankyou Tommy
Was blessed to meet him iand his band at a Warragul Chinese restaurant right before the show, we were the only 2 tables, I was with my mum and nan, I think i was 17, he was so gracious and kind. Very very special man and probably the greatest guitar player of players I've ever heard. Gem
Breathtaking playing, arangement and the level of skill playing artificial harmonics is second to none, including Lenny Breau who sort of invented the technique. Tommy plays at a stunning level of world class mastery.
Nothing like listening to a master guitar player with what has to be one of the finest guitars I have ever heard. It is so musical. No one can do what i heard without a fine instrument to make those musical sounds. It was extraordinary how the guitar sounds and what he knows to do with it. It is powerful and subtle.
The most melodic version I’ve ever heard played. Absolutely beautiful! Thank you Tommy for sharing your wonderful talent with the world. It does make it a little brighter.
He's a national treasure to just about every country that's been lucky enough to have him perform there. Australia native, yes, but much more. A great goodwill ambassador.
Truly, truly beautiful. When my elder cousin Kathey, (who was like a mother to me) passed away, I chose this video to post on her family's FB page. Whenever I hear Mr. Emmanuel play this song, I think of her. I miss her. I love her.
Absolutely brilliant. The greatest acoustic guitarists of all time. What a God given gift, in my next life hopefully.😄 I'm over the rainbow just listening to this.
i believe we're all potentially a gift from god to humanity . tommy has found his gifting and worked his arse off to bless us .what an example of inspiration and hope for us all to find our gift and give it away to humanity out of our abundance .
Tommy is the only guitar player I've heard who can get away with over doing something. He really just "takes you there" if you just close your eyes and listen. What an incredible arrangement Tommy....the BEST! ❤
I've seen Tommy a couple times and was fortunate to spend an hour with him prior to a show while he was setting up. Not only is he unquestionably the best in the world, he is also a heck of a nice guy - gracious and giving. I am certainly richer for having the good fortune to hear Tommy play his guitar.
As a musician and songwriter it’s rare that I am moved to tears by just a guitar. What an absolutely incredible gift and to see the joy on your face and satisfaction was an added bonus

Keep them coming Tommy.... They're amazing.... (80 people have no soul!)
Well said. I experience that when I play for people. It's the greatest feeling in the world. It's Divine. Anything you put 10,000 plus into, takes you to a different level.
I was there in Momtreal Jazz festival in 2006. It was rainy day and sunset came up suddenly. I wsa waiting in front of Tommy's stage. The first song was this... Over the rainbow. I never forget that filling. It was miracle. Everything are perfect. I could be there with this song anytime. Thank ypu Tommy for this beautiful playing with guitar.
1.5k Downvotes? I can't even comprehend that - unless it's from people who have no earthly idea how to play the guitar and they're jealous? This was an absolute masterpiece!
Only excuse is they have the sound off. And they're blind. I've listened to him play this so many times when I'm down and it ALWAYS brings my mood up and then I get lost in the genius of his playing.
ill never forget the time hearing this played at the iridium at les pauls long standing jazz gig. everyone including les was mesmerized. thanks so much for that.
This is one of the most precious and talented people I have ever heard. This man has so much to offer to the music world. I'm at a loss for words. Tommy... I praise the Lord for you. Your talent and love for the guitar is equaled by no one. Thank you sir!
Yes Tommy's a wonderful Christian man who I used to see playing locally here in Melbourne Australia in the 80s..Apart from his wizardry on the guitar he's a very sympathetic man when talking to people..God bless you from Australia 💓🙋🎸
Nothing, but nothing has ever struck me musically like this apart from Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto. Somewhere over the Rainbow is such a pure melody that any arrangements have to be way above average to enhance it. This, however, literally carries the soul over the rainbow, the clouds, through the warmth of sunlight, whirling through the air. It has moved me physically, literally changing my heart rate, in my soul, exhilarating. What a joy!
That is BY FAR the MOST FEELING I have EVER heard put into that beautiful song! This is so much more than just great guitar playing. This was such a beautiful interpretation - it's almost like he took Harold Arlen's beautiful melody and adorned it with the most exquisite jewelry, the way a man would (if he could) to a wife he loves with all his heart. As though he was saying to the song "You're so beautiful- let me adorn you with jewels and show you off to everyone!"
this is what a lifetime of dedication to an instrument looks like
..sure is.

When I have had the crappiest of work days, I walk into my home and turn on the big speakers and play this version of this song by this man.
It makes everything better, IMMEDIATELY! ❤
I’m a grown man 56 years old and this is so beautiful it makes me cry every time I listen.
Those harmonics in the intro are ANGELIC
Didn't even think this was possible on a standard guitar
Speechless, utterly speechless, my jaw has hit the floor...
Don’t, it’s a scam
The greatest alive acoustic guitarist! That’s all! ❤️
Don’t, it’s a scam
Good luck! TE Admin
Tommy Emmanuel
Tommy Emmanuel I just purchased the set with the CD and download
Tommy Emmanuel I've been going through Tommy's Fingerstyle Milestones set. I am up to video #35 and this morning it finally sunk in as to what I was supposed to be doing. One of my problems is that I have developed a LOT of bad habits trying to teach myself to finger-pick over the past 50 years and they are tough to break. But it is starting to make sense. I have a LOOOOOG way to go yet but I can now see the light thanks to Tommy's instructions. I purchased the download plus the DVD. I haven't received the DVD yet but it should be here any day
If anyone is serious about learning Tommy's style I highly recommend they buy this.
Emmanuel is amazing. Nothing is beyond him. He is so perfect in his playing. Such great technique and tone and beautiful voicings.
Im an old man and this has always been my favorite song from my favorite movie and for me nothing will ever equal the scene of Judy singing it. That said this is my favorite instrumental version played with respect and sensitivity and a nod to Chet. Thankyou Tommy
Tommy you make my eyes cry and my heart sing , truly beautiful music. Thank you.

Wow...Beautiful....
Tommy, I've never heard anyone give their guitar such a great voice. Bravo Sir.
Best one man orchestra I’ve ever seen 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Staminkjia che bella!!!!!!!!....riempie l'anima, grazie Tommy!
Truly, truly beautiful. When my elder cousin Kathey, (who was like a mother to me) passed away, I chose this video to post on her family's FB page. Whenever I hear Mr. Emmanuel play this song, I think of her. I miss her. I love her.
Beyond the astonishing chops comes the fact that TE dishes such emotion. I cried. Again. 😂❤
Absolutely brilliant. The greatest acoustic guitarists of all time. What a God given gift, in my next life hopefully.😄 I'm over the rainbow just listening to this.
Far and above, the most beautiful rendition of Over The Rainbow I have ever heard. Thank you Tommy.
Tommy is a gift from God. The nuanced grace of his playing reveals his mastery of the instrument and the excruciating beauty of this song.
Listen to his Waltzing Matilda!
I can't wait to die and be born again with this God given gift. I will be happy with half the gift.
i believe we're all potentially a gift from god to humanity . tommy has found his gifting and worked his arse off to bless us .what an example of inspiration and hope for us all to find our gift and give it away to humanity out of our abundance .
Tommy is the only guitar player I've heard who can get away with over doing something. He really just "takes you there" if you just close your eyes and listen. What an incredible arrangement Tommy....the BEST! ❤
You literally just painted a picture of a dream only seen through sound. Amazing is not grand enough of a word to describe your talent sir.
Who the balls would dislike this? His hands are literally a miracle.
+King Matt ...My mom always said; "Some people's taste is all in their mouths."
an untrained ear or just a negative person
I've seen Tommy a couple times and was fortunate to spend an hour with him prior to a show while he was setting up. Not only is he unquestionably the best in the world, he is also a heck of a nice guy - gracious and giving. I am certainly richer for having the good fortune to hear Tommy play his guitar.
As a musician and songwriter it’s rare that I am moved to tears by just a guitar. What an absolutely incredible gift and to see the joy on your face and satisfaction was an added bonus
It’s captivating to watch a musical instrument be brought to life. It has a celestial quality to it. Without Tommy, the guitar is nothing.
If there is anything more remarkable than this performance, it is the shear love and joy Tommy pits into his music.
Its crazy how influential this guy has been on modern fingerstyle guitar. A living legend.
This made my eyes leak , , thankyou for this beautiful man, Lord,
where do i even begin. or where do i even end? this man is a walking legend. what is not visible in this 5 minute video is the dedication he has for the craft all his life. i tip my hat to you sir.
I've probably watched this 100 times by now and still have the same reaction as the first time. This performance is legendary in my book!♥️
Watching and listening with tears of joy and marvelling at this unbelievable rendition of one of the most beautiful and emotional songs ever written .. thank you maestro 🌈🌈🌈
Don’t, it’s a scam.
All those other amazingly talented finger style guitarists you see online these days have this man to thank.
Who cares about perfect technique when you have this much Soul!!!.... all you have to do is look and see how much he's enjoying this... to the point where he cant help but sing along... :)
Its beautiful...... and his heart is poured into it.....
Keep them coming Tommy.... They're amazing....
(80 people have no soul!)
Eighty-five people *
Tommy best)
Nice words mate😊
One of the greatest songs ever written played by one of the greatest guitarist that’s ever lived.
correction. the greatest song ever written
When other guitarists play, we listen to their guitar: but when Tommy plays? - we listen to Tommy.
Great meaning!
Absolutely dude!
Well said. I experience that when I play for people. It's the greatest feeling in the world. It's Divine. Anything you put 10,000 plus into, takes you to a different level.
You’re wrong. The Guitar listens to Tommy.
and tommy listened to chet.
I was thinking exactly the same, this man is an absolute genius, I've been playing guitar for 45 years and I feel like a beginner in comparison
Only excuse is they have the sound off. And they're blind.
I've listened to him play this so many times when I'm down and it ALWAYS brings my mood up and then I get lost in the genius of his playing.
Pure jealousy. Some people can’t stand someone having the amount of skill to be on this level.
everyone here is wrong, they're all misclicks :)
I'm PRETTY sure the dislikes are people with fat fingers haha
This reminds me of how indescribably beautiful it is to be alive right now.
Notes of pure joy flowing down like a heavenly waterfall...so amazing!
ill never forget the time hearing this played at the iridium at les pauls long standing jazz gig. everyone including les was mesmerized. thanks so much for that.
One of the best guitar performances ever . Tommy knocks it out of the park here . ⚾️😎💰🪓🎸
Don't know anyone who feels his music like Tommy! So beautiful!
What a joy!
That whole sequence in the 3rd minute is just so awesome. Tommy, you wonderful wonderful man.
Beautiful comment thank you
when people talk about original version of "Somewhere over the rainbow", I think of this version :) it is just simply perfect!
Tanks, Tommy, you make our existancies all beautifull existancies !!
