I have been playing guitar for forty years, and have seen Tommy live five times. For about six months after I see him, when people ask me if I play guitar, I just lower my head and mutter "No, not really".
Tommy without doubt is the best guitarist on the Planet. Had the pleasure of seeing him a few times he is just incredible and a joy to listen to. As a guitarist myself for 35 years I just feel like I havent even started after seeing this man....
I first met Tommy in 1991 in Geelong, Australia. I was only 15yrs old, and in the midst of pure homelife hell. I saw him play 3-4 times a year, front row centre each time. Tommy not only inspired me to be a better guitar player, the best thing he taught me was how to strive to always be a good person, be humble, stay true to myself...and the fact music is the best medicine. He truly got me through some real tough times in the early 1990's, just by simply being himself and taking the time to hang around after his show until he'd spoken to each and every fan. I always waited until last, just to try + make sure he knew how valued he was to me as a person, and get a few extra minutes with him to soak up the warmth of his soul. Thanks mate xo
I can't even comprehend how anyone can play so perfectly. dynamics, technique, speed, feel, rhythm, Tommy is just a perfect player. I could listen to him all day.
Hes been performing on the guitar since he was 5. Hes played more hours than you could imagine. Not only is he gifted natural talent, he works hard at it e eryday still. Thats why hes so amazing
You can do this if you really... I'm actually playing guitar boogie and I'm halfway through.. But trust me, you need to be extremely patient and not getting mad when the fingers doesn't respond the way you want... Keep training every day and I mean EVERY DAY and you will notice the results.. Good luck 🎸🎸🎸
Hey I'm 27 and found this when i was 19, still cried. It's incredible, and I'm so grateful to have brought my step dad of 64 to see him play this live recently. an honor to see
There's a man that followed his heart. As a result, his soul is able to sincerely project itself in a positive way, and in return, make the world a better place. Thank you Mr.Emmanuel.
I saw him and band back in 1996ish in Sydney, Australia with my Mum and younger brother. It was in a little club down in 'The Rocks' (for anyone who knows Sydney). Ther would have been maybe 150 packed into this club and we like most were standing then this foursome, who had a table directly in front of the stage, just grabbed their stuff and left; just before he was going to start, why I don't know but - I kid you not - I didn't know that my mother could move so quickly over short distances, but before anyone could blink we had that table and the night of our lives. The only time that I've ever gone to a concert with my mother but I am so glad that I have that memory, and I tell you I am so glad that Tommy Emmanuel is still as humble, dynamic and entertaining now (with his much deserved international success) as he was then. He still says his brother Phil is a better player than he is (for me I think it's a toss up, they're both sensational) just showing the great warmth, generosity and spirit of the man. He's a great Australian, that's for damn sure !!
Thanks mate, it was a great night and I, at least, haven't gone to many concerts with my mother. T.E is one of those artists that seem to interest people of all ages.
+voxac30withstrat Nah, it wasn't The Basement, good guess though as I've seen many a great talent there from Katie Noonan to James Morrison. I'm a Central Coaster, born & bred (when sayingup past Gosford got the ubiquitous reply 'Oh, the country' - Ahh times change. lol) & I think it was a short lived U.S chain but the name escapes me. T shirts of Tijuana blah blah etc. have the name & I'll know it soon as I hear it. Oh well. Doesn't take my memory of the night, just the name ha ha. Sure Mr. Emmanual doesn't remember it either. Can you believe that one youtuber described him as JUST a fast 12 bar blueser - ?!?!??. How quickly the latter 20C has been forgotten. I put him straight - just with some easily obtained URL's. Btw I love aVox ac 30 with a strat or a tele.
One of the greatest guitar performances ever given. Complete and total perfection and mastery of an instrument. ANYONE who has ever tried playing can appreciate both the technical brilliance and the extraordinary feel Tommy plays with.
it is almost impossible to find more superlatives to describe the incredible qualities associated with talent. Never anyone to perform like this with a guitar. Chapaux
This blew my mind when I saw him bend a natural harmonic chord on an acoustic guitar. Such creativity! I'm really glad I got to see him perform here on Oahu. His showmanship is inspiring
Wow, that's really great I have waited for long time to be on his show until I finally do & believe me it's a memory day for me lol 😂. How are you doing Sarah ?
I have a dear friend of mine and a great guitar player who is a friend of Mr. Emmanuel; we both agree Tommy is one of the best contemporary guitar players in the world! This man easily plays a three-part arrangement on one guitar.
What a gift! First time listener. A real wow effect. The man is a guitar genius. I feel every chord and I've been playing the guitar for a long time. A real gifted man.
Not only an insanely talented guitar player, but an awesome stage man, entertainer, and incredible human being. He's an inspiration. Something I strive to be. We need more people like this in our world.
I was at a music store, and the guy working upstairs told me about this guy cause I hadn’t heard of him before. Then he showed me this video, and I could barely believe what I saw! Absolute genius!
Saw Tommy in live performance on Tuesday. Had a campfire in my backyard an hour later. Started it with my guitar as tinder. Damn that man is GREAT! (Just kidding about my guitar. I still have it, but am reluctant to pick it up. Go figure.). Bless you Tommy .. you show us how amazing a guitar player can be with a lifetime of dedication (and a born gift). 🙂
I've been playing over 40 years, and have worked damn hard at it. I know what he's doing, I understand it, but can't come close to it. It's as if he's not holding a guitar, he is the guitar.
Ditto, been playing since I was 9, formally trained, went to school and studied music, etc.. I see Tommy play and I just want to sell everything I own. Some people are born with talent (Mr. Emmanuel) and others no matter how hard they work at it just never quite get there(me). I still play because it's fun and mentally and spiritually satisfying.
One the very best, most talented guitarists I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. I love the inclusion of 'Walk don't run' in the middle there (the old Ventures track). Absolutely stunning musician!
Tommy Emmanuel is such a great entertainer and obviously a true master when it comes to playing the guitar. I'm so grateful that I've seen him live two times and met him after both shows to have a little chat. A sincerely kind, happy and amazing human being!
To play like this is phenomenal enough ladies and gentlemen - to play like this on an acoustic steel string is ridiculous. I recently saw Tommy Emmanuel play live in Australia. The frightening thing is, Tommy, like Jeff Beck is constantly trying to find new ways to play his guitar. Extract something novel musically and sonically. Tommy is one of Australia's major artistic gifts to the world.
I have played in bands and concerts but nothing can surpass this genius who gives so much on RUclips to younger musicians and hope and inspiration to us all thank you Tommy x
Somewhere in the "great beyond" is a shocked Spaniard who invented the guitar. Tommy has shown him the possibilities that the instrument possesses and the musical feats that can be accomplished with it. The Spaniard could NEVER have dreamed that his invention would achieve this level of utility in the hands of Tommy Emmanuel, a dude from Australia's "Outback" who never took a music lesson !!!
I just got done playing my strat, after seeing this i wasn't playing squat, this man is playing the guitar, me i just found out how much i really suck, thanks bro for making me see the truth
This is what happens when one is truly dedicated beyond the norm. He not only mastered the instrument he's gone beyond an explored the what if's. A living example of excellence.
The most amazing thing about Tommy's playing is not just his incredible skill, wonderful sense of humor, and playing from the heart, but it's the fact that he is deaf! That's right, deaf. I learned on PBS yesterday that Tommy has only 20% of his hearing. He wears hearing aids in both ears. He lost his hearing to rheumatic fever as a little boy. Good thing his parents encouraged him to keep on with his music. The world has been given another Ludwig Beethoven - also a deaf composer. Tommy is a living testimony that we can overcome anything. Now that's amazing grace.
Did a search for Tommy Emmanuel to show someone his awesome playing. So surprised to find this clip of the show I attended as a guest of my neighbor which was my first exposure to him. Loved him ever since. ❤️
Isnt he just Fabulous?! Such a gift! He is coming to our small city of Rockhampton, QLD, Australia, soon, & we are excited to be attending his concert!
Epi Phone I have never met the man and don't know if he believes in God or not but I'll choose too believe that's why he played Amazing Grace because he is thankful for the God given talent he has worked so hard to perfect!
For my earlier, childish reply I apologise. I don't believe in a universal supreme being, stop short of atheism but fall into the agnostic camp (yes, a proverbial doubting Thomas). I do believe in an all encompassing spirituality, some living beings possess more, some less. If there is a God, & I truly hope that there is, T.E's musical talent was certainly given by same & crafted with his own toil, to the seemingly magical performances that he regularly gives. He is a true gentleman & a fine Australian.
Epi Phone No harm done and I accept your apology. I can truly say that I have met this man named Jesus in 1971 when He touched and healed my mother. She was very ill. I have no reason at all to lie to you or try to deceive you. I am receiving nothing from you for what I say. I am just speaking from personal experience and it cost you nothing. God is truly real and He loves you when no one else cares. Seek for the truth! God Bless You!
Of all the guitarists I've seen, including all the studio greats (Carlton, Ritenour), and monsters like George Benson and Al Di Meola, only ONE GUY on the planet plays EVERY time out as if his hair is on fire, or it's the final competition of the Olympics and he has to come from behind to take the GOLD. That's Tommy. Catch him in concert before the legend passes. He'll be the same age this year as when his brother Phil passed...
I have met Tommy on 4 occasions, even just near his area at the shops, this guy is a highly skilled musician. If anybody has anything bad to say, you are either trolling, or a nasty person who hates life... To all those that do, get up there and start entertaining people.... See what skills you have to draw a crowd.
Pero por favor, que virtuoso músico, su técnica, su sentido del ritmo, su rock and roll, sus blues y hasta su sentido del espectáculo y su humor. Un genio.
Tommy is not just one with the instrument, Tommy is the instrument. But the music… oh my! The music is purely God’s Spirit. Steel strings and hardwood soundboard and Tommy’s blessed fingers combining to give God glory.
+Randolph Scudder I absolutely hate it when someone with real talent picks up my guitar and makes me look silly. I feel the same as you... I think my guitar sighs and begrudgingly settles for the inferiority of my skill. I am sure my guitar thinks... " Well at least he is not smashing me on a stage..."
+Randolph Scudder I know what you mean. I've been playing guitar for 46 years and I guess I've reached a certain skill level, but whenever I start to think "I'm pretty darn good", all I have to do is watch one of the many RUclips videos of Tommy Emmanuel, and that gets my head on straight again. I get humbled right off my chair. He is a true acoustic guitar virtuoso and a helluva showman. He connects with his audience in the best possible way, and he is always entertaining. I've heard hundreds, maybe thousands of great guitarists over the last 50 years, but rarely have I ever heard anyone as good, both technically, and showing his heart, as Tommy Emmanuel. You watch and listen to him, and you are watching the very best. I'm a good enough guitarist that I know and understand completely what he is doing with his guitar, but I have given up any hope of getting as good as he is. I can only do my best, and work hard to get better. He is the gold standard for guitar playing, IMHO.
This is purely subjective, I know, but I have to say that I think Tommy Emmanuel is the best all-around guitarist living today! There is NOTHING he can't play! Add the fact that he is a truly humble and sincerely nice guy makes him a class act through and through!
Best in the world, Chet wasn't even as good!! Ok here is why in part that I can make that statement. Is there another guitarist that if were playing with Tommy, do you think Tommy would get lost and not be able to play what the other guitar player was playing no matter what?? Now do you know of ANY guitar players that can play what Tommy plays and keep up with Tommy's talent...absolutely NO!! Tommy has played with most all the great great guitar players in the world, and they all say Tommy is a World Class Jenious and better than anyone in our history or current, so what makes these *orons on here in this post think they know better.... grow up!!
I had the pleasure of seeing him play with "The John Farnham Band " playing support to Stevie Wonder , I could see the members of that band at the sides of the stage checking out the local talent ....and like Stevie ,they loved it ! Best in the world .
A true Oztralian, you can't beat them Ozzies. Got my first tape of Tommy way back in '81 or '82 in Australia and never found anything better since then. Of course there are all sorts of other great guitar players but Tommy seems to excel in this style of playing mainly because he just really BRINGS it to LIFE.
Просто потрясающе! Перехватывает дыхание от такого виртуозного исполнения! Это совершенно невозможно повторить! Если есть гитарный бог, то это Томми Эммануель!
Unglaublich!!! 👍😎🇦🇹
Tommy Emmanuel... the consummate performer: and as for his command over the guitar - the virtuoso of swing, jazz, blues and.. you name it! Awesome stage presence, and fabulous show: the joy of music lives here!!!!
OK, you got me, I was always a bit wary of Mr, Emmanuel and his Style of playing (a bit over the top I always thought) but, having had the house to myself this Weekend I somehow got into a never ending "Tommy Emmanuel Loop" on RUclips and I am totally converted, This man is amazing. Long live the King!
The 758 people who gave this the "thumbs down" have no soul. One of the greatest guitar players on the planet, if not the greatest.
Unbelievable. Silly. Can't understand how someone could give 1 thumbs down to this.
Joe Satriani says TE is the greatest guitarist on the planet today. I'll take his qualified word for it.
Richard Smith has surpassed him

I interrupted him while he was eating before the show, he just handled it!
A True Diamond
I have never heard such beautiful guitar playing in all my life of 70 years. Thanks for sharing.
Try Billy Strings who Tommy Emmanuel played with in working man and guitar boogie they play lick for lick. Awesome 👍
Does someone know anyone 🤔 better? He is just sensational. The best I've heard in my eighty years.
Every time I see Tommy Emmanuel play, my guitar just speaks to me. It says, “Dude, don’t even think about it.”
😂
Mine says "Why don't you touch me like he touches his?"
Mine runs....yelling hell no...I'm calling my divorce lawyer.....

Don't know about that. He's definitely a super talent. I also think Albert Lee a super talent. See RUclips.

Tommy is not a GUITAR PLAYER , HE IS A GUITAR MASTER.
Check this guy . Alip ba ta
This was my introduction to TE. Still my favorite YT video. He's the best in the world. Maybe even the galaxy too
Absolutely amazing guitar player right there love both of these songs could sit and listen to Tommy play all night
In all my years of playing, in all my years of watching great guitarists, Tommy remains the best.
Amazing guitarin' and funny and humble bloke too...............quite rare. Cheers for the post
How can someone dislikes this briliant job.
If anyone deserves a knighthood it's Tommy Emmanuel, Sir Tommy has a ring to it
My guitar just looked up at me and laughed!
+John Sheely LOL!! I know what you mean..... My guitar just " Gently weeps"
+Randolph Scudder Hahahaha I HEAR ya!! Supernatural Genius!
+Scott Gagel YOU SAID IT!
This is probably the most thankful guitar in existence.
Genius is a genius!! That's it!! Right there!! Nobody and I say nobody plays like him!!❤️👍‼️
This is purely subjective, I know, but I have to say that I think Tommy Emmanuel is the best all-around guitarist living today!
Tommy has played with most all the great great guitar players in the world, and they all say Tommy is a World Class Jenious and better than anyone in our history or current, so what makes these *orons on here in this post think they know better.... grow up!!
Dudes just different....can't describe it. Glad he still around doing his thing.
Saw this dude at the Clearwater Festival in NY last weekend. His playing is unreal. I'm sorry I bought just one of his CDs.
Just trying to get my jaw up off the floor after playing for 50 years. God bless you Tommy! Well I’m off the the practice room forever. Lol 🎸🎶✝️
Просто потрясающе! Перехватывает дыхание от такого виртуозного исполнения! Это совершенно невозможно повторить! Если есть гитарный бог, то это Томми Эммануель!
Unglaublich!!!
👍😎🇦🇹
One talented guitar player of all time. Total awesome!
25 no 35 time i heard this and ill never stop this is perfect Stevies blues
would LOVE to see Tommy do the halftime at the superbowl
Watching this on the day his brother Phil Emmanuel passed away. This "Amazing Grace" would be appropriate for Phil's funeral.
This dude is unbelievable! Such a humbling and inspiring experience watching this dude totally own his instrument.
That is some of the most brilliant guitar playing ever!
The Boogie was great, fantastic ... but a bluzy Amazing Grace ... take me home now Lord because I've heard the best!
Tommy Emmanuel... the consummate performer: and as for his command over the guitar - the virtuoso of swing, jazz, blues and.. you name it! Awesome stage presence, and fabulous show: the joy of music lives here!!!!
Such a treat to watch and hear him play!
Человечество создало три чуда , это Рок-н-рол , пиво и автомобиль.
Masterfully done. Fearless, beautiful and flawless as alwayz. 💙💙💙💙💯
