Tommy and Phil Emmanuel, rock guitar medley, France, 2001. AMAZING PERFORMANCE!!!

- Tommy and Phil showing off their guitar and performance skills during this show in France in 2001. Doing a medley of songs, with everything from AC/DC to television show theme songs. At eleven minutes in Tommy breaks a string but switches guitars 'cause they're havin' way too much fun to stop! One of the best performances I've seen of them as they pull out all their old tricks from playing each others guitars to both playing the same guitar. If you enjoy this video you might want to check out my video "Tommy and Phil Emmanuel - Four hands One Guitar" which they play the Twelfth Street Rag, as the do in this video too.

Imagine being a world class guitarist, with skills that I could only ever dream of, then your little brother is Tommy Emmnuel!
Pheeeeeenominal!
Uncanny!
Imagine watching Tommy Emmanuel, you’ve just been blown away by his incredible talent, and he says I’ve got a brother who plays a bit of guitar, come out and show ‘em Wiz…
@@philrichmond5919 Amazing isn't it. Just ain't fair !! Lol. Could listen to these guys all night and be blown away the whole time.
They must be like what, the thing only has six strings !! How hard can THAT be ???!!!!!

The only brothers that could scare the Vaughan brothers with their chops.
I was good friends with Phil and many of you may not know that Phil was regarded as the best electric guitarist in Australia he was very passionate and was always recording and had a new album ready for release when he passed away Phil loved his classics like the shadows and had his rig so well tuned to get the authentic sounds of the guitarist he loved to play. Miss you mate, Rest in eternal guitarist heaven jamming with all the other greats that have moved on and I hope there’s a bottle of Jack by your side. Cheers from your mates on the sunny coast.
The amount of musical chemistry between these two is insane. I wish more people had seen this.
RIP Phil Emmanuel. One of the elite guitarists in the world . . .
Tommy and Phil just have music flowing from their fingers. Rest In Peace Phil, God bless Tommy. I’m constantly in awe
His mates love him , love ya Phill Jack's on the rocks one for the road mate💞
You don't just practice and get this good. These guys are both wired in ways that none of us could possibly imagine. It's way beyond talent and gift, it's incredibly unique, one of a kind (OK two), masters of their instruments and their fingers. Seriously amazing stuff. I've played professionally, and if these guys asked me to sit in I'd find the closest door and run like hell through it.
How refreshing it is to hear someone humble on RUclips for a change!! :) I've been learning guitar for a while now and am fairly dedicated but I agree, I think there's certain people who just seem to be able to play as if they've been learning for twice as long as they actually have! It's like 99 percent of us out there could NEVER run faster than Usain Bolt, even if we trained for the rest of our lives. These guys are just mesmerizing! I think it's a good thing that there's people like this to show the rest of us what is possible.
It's being DRIVEN that does it... Tommy was driven in the way that few are -- specifically the few that are at the top of any game, instrument, skill, etc. It's the devotion of your life and entire energy to a pursuit with no looking back...
These gentlemen are what I would call "Master Class" guitarists. Unbelievably talented indeed. Thank you for your insightful and wonderful post JB
BULLSHIT! Drop that. There is nothing inherently special about tom and phil. They are just a couple of country kids, no more human than you. But they PRACTICED man, they didn't look at television they looked at fretboards. (I grew up with them) Tom plays ALL the time. The idea that they are wired in some superior fashion is just an excuse for you to feel o.k. about your own lack of drive. As for sitting in with them, you have to want to run to the stage not to the door. You won't get anywhere running to the door. I've played with them and would again in a heartbeat at any available opportunity. I don't judge your choices but don't make excuses for not being there. There is no secret...if it's in your lap, you are improving, if it's in the corner, you are not. Don't cry at me, I'm telling you the truth.
rabbittraps Well thanks for your sermon. I've played for my potatoes in my past and I know there are some people that are more "gifted" than others. Like it or not, that's a fact jack.
That was a wild ride lmao. Idk if I’ve ever two guys just shred like that for 15 minutes
Gawd, I'm so lucky! Phil lives just over there... in the next Queensland village. And how many times have I been fortunate enough to listen/watch/enjoy this man do his thing on the stage here. Tommy doesn't get to town often, too busy elsewhere, but Phil is one of the best when it comes to being a neighbor. Lucky me.
I love seeing Tommy and his brother interacting............they have so much fun!
😢 Rest In Peace, Phil. A huge loss for the guitar world, for Tommy.
He was my favourite aussie guitarist and I met a few times, he is happy to talk with you outside while puffin on a cigggy, signed 2 of my guitars
@@abutrug and scotch at hand ,real friendly guy Phil was always had time with a smile .Seen Phil at the Royal Mail Goodna, top nights.
Two brothers just hanging out. Wonderful that this was captured.
Nice
Normally I do not listen to this kind of music, but I'm impressed. Jon Gomm brought me here.
Tommy & Phil - Australia's guitar gift to the world !!!
Casually takes the acoustic guitar, goes backstage, comes back out, picks up the electric and thinks, "Hmmmm, I guess this'll have to do." Then you listen and all you hear is GOD between the two of them.
The two most amazing guitar players this world has ever seen! R.I.P. Phil.
Mamacita De Los Perros not the best we have ever seen lol but definitely very talented
jaydn riley, it is subjective.😊
Those two guys have had a crazy fun childhood, for sure. They are absolutely fantastic as evidence.rip Phil
My friend just sent me this
"dude i know what you mean about these guys now, they are two of the most talented musicians I have ever seen, easily, just on a whole different level, this is what mastery looks like"
best 4 guitarists you will ever see ..
Guitars breaking, amps breaking, strings breaking: not a problem, not a pause, not a beat missed, not even the bat of an eyelid: Tommy keeps calling the numbers and pounding the rhythm, Phil keeps playing the lead, with a glance they swap, and as always when theses two forces of nature come together, they cause a rift in space and time: whether in Paris 2001 or your study at home as you watch on youtube; the Emanual Brothers are in the house, and the house is blown away.
1000000trs ccc
This is beautifully said.
Yeah
Mate you were there
had the pleasure of performing at karratha hotel resort western australa mid 90s, with phil. good old days, miss them....
I had the pleasure to see Phil play about 15 years ago and what really impressed me was all the other pro guitarists (about 5 or 6) on the bill that night were just standing off stage watching his performance just like we in the audience were doing.
He was admired by his peers for his unbelievable ability. He could have had it all, as I see it, but just wanted to enjoy playing without the stardom.
He is such a very personable man 👍 And is very humble. That's why I like him.
I am on the floor totally cracking up! They are insane, spontaneous, hilarious in how they interact, and this is some of the hottest hard core jamming on this planet. Possibly in this galaxy.
Funny how music is the first thing to go when it comes to school budget cuts. Nice to see two brothers playing and having fun. I was a divorces/single mom with four kids. We lived in a small duplex and we never took any vacations. Going out to dinner once a month meant a trip to Taco Bell, but all four of my kids had music lessons and they will all tell you it was the most enjoyable part of their childhood.
So tell the school district and the unions to get rid of half the administrators and all of the inept "educators" and apply their ridiculous compensation packages to a music program...
I did. I went to school board meetings and switched schools to schools with music and choir programs. I also participated in aaaall the fundraisers.
Like bangin' your head against a drum I imagine. btw, you shouldn't have to participate in fundraisers; most states piss away $15K+/yr./student...
Funny isn't it. Music is regarded as non essential and not worthy in the curriculum. However helps with maths and other areas. I'd argue music is one of the most essential things in this covid world . Helps people cope. The same people who cut the funding don't get it or don't realise how long and hard it is to become a musician and how much study is actually involved. I bet your kids thank you everyday for the gift you gave them
You're a mom-hero! No kidding!
Wow Phil and Tommy are absolutely on fire here. A 15 minute extravaganza of insane playing. Never heard or seen anything like it. What I really like is that they're not showing off. They're just having a great time and genuinely want to entertain their audience. Rest in peace Phil and may God bless you Tommy.
Pleasure and pain every time I see a video or play a CD with the greatly missed Phil Emmanuel. I couldn’t begin to understand Tommy’s anguish. Super hero’s.
It was hard to take for sure, sadly missed.
Tommy has a brother? Wow! What are the chances of having this much talent in one family? Love it!
It's just crazy how Tommy can play two guitars at once. Crazy
the two best and most talented guitar players alive today
This right here is just about one of the most inspired pieces of guitar music performance the world has ever been lucky enough to see. ~Evan
im in bloody tears used to watch these two in a wine bar!!!! in dee why!!! top blokes
\
Yep, in the early 80s either of them might pop into any of the different 10pm - 3am wine bars and clubs on Sydney's North Shore for a bit of a "blow" with anyone else who was playing. Humble guys, extraordinary players, great times.
me too ,standing room only
This is simply magical. It's better than music: it's just plain inspiration. Tommy Emmanuel is the greatest guitarist on earth today, and yet he plays rhythm guitar for Phil, who was the lead guitarist in the family. Those two possess talent beyond description. Phil's loss is incalculable, although Tommy is carrying the legacy on today. What amazing stuff. Simply wonderful.
"Tommy Emmanuel is the greatest guitarist on earth today"
He's a very fine player, as his his brother, but the best in the world?
Have you seen Paco Da Lucia, Allan Holdsworth, John McLaughlin, Al di Meola, Robert Fripp, Andy Latimer, Steve Howe? All these and a host of others can lay claim to being the "best", but it all comes down to personal taste as to who you choose.
@@kingcurry6594 Oh, come on - have a word with yourself. Frank Vignola would head your list but TE is the GOAT. Eric Clapton says so, and that's good enough for me.
@@nectafarious8842 Eric Clapton isn't that great a guitarist either. Good, but not in the top league.
Steve Vai called Allan Holdsworth the greatest guitarist who ever lived and he may be right.
@@kingcurry6594Why did you question the opinion of @vanessasheridan4263, just to conclude it's a matter of opinion? There's an old saying, "If you can't impress [someone] with knowledge, dazzle them with 🐃💩!"
Personally, I think Tommy IS one of the best, IF NOT THE BEST alive today. Possibly the best in recorded history, BUT THAT'S JUST ME!
🤔 Come to think of it, a picker named CHET ADKINS thought Tommy was 1 of the best, IF NOT THE BEST. He referred to Tommy as a CGP... But what did Chet know, right?
@@drj.r.cooper2493 Chet Atkins was a country guitarist, so clearly players like Tommy and Phil Emmanuel would appeal to him. But Atkins died in 2001, so he won't have seen many of the modern greats, nor is he likely to have seen many jazz-fusion or progressive rock guitarists, some of whom use advanced techniques like tapping and sweep picking that are not common in country music.
But for me, this is the greatest exhibition of virtuosity I've seen:
ruclips.net/video/ADwfyxpriAM/видео.html
those 47 people who disliked this video-
hell has a special place just for you
Those people a kids
I think it's an automatic RUclips setting - no matter what the video you always get about 2% dislikes. Which makes the vote (and the voters) as meaningless as always.
They are aliens from Pluto hehehe
No kidding! I’m just now finding this guy and wow is all I can say. He is off the charts ..amazing!
Not people. Trolls.
Just as I always suspected: guitar playing aliens from an advanced musical species.
The Emanuel brothers had the luckiest parents to raise these boys while witnessing how good they would become!
I saw Phil Emmanuel playing in a bar close to the NSW/Queensland border Dec 1994 whilst on holiday. I'd never heard of the guy but didn't he ever leave a lasting impression on a young pom.I swear the neck on the washburn he was playing was bending. I found a cd by Phil in Cairns,"Kakadu Sunrise".He's every bit as good as his more well known brother Tommy.
I just returned my money spent for guitar lessons....I quit!!
@@TheNHCM oh please don't. You don't have to be them. Be you. Do what God made you for.
Rest in peace Phil.
I've seen Tommy a half dozen times.
Sadly, I never got to see Phil.
The videos I've seen over the past couple of years have made me realize something.
Australia gave us the best electric and the best acoustic guitar players in the world.
Ever.
Compare to many 'top' groups today.
The Emmanuels win by simply knowing more that the 6 chords most top musician get away with.
Wonderful relationship between those brothers...no EGO's here!! There is no word COINED for how good these guys are!!!!
both of them are premium guitar players to say the least .
That's true brotherly love on full display right there. We tragically lost Phil in 2018 at the terribly young age of 65 due to a sudden asthma attack. Talent like that should never die. It only proves that life ain't fair.
Fear not the judges call ! Life is fair and just , Every man has his time in the sun and then back to dust :)
Looking at fairness from different perspective, why are they God's chosen few and we aren't.😄
All the songs Phil played when they were young and Tommy was determined to learn!
So awesome to see and hear the joy!!!!
Best guitar duet iver ever seen
God these guys are good. All they do is get up there and jam and it's amazing. RIP Phil.
Doesn't get any better than the Emmanuel Brothers . RIP Phil
This is a great intro to the genius that is The Emmanuel Brothers : Tommy & Phil. Tommy became a professional guitarist at the age of 7, then his younger brother Phil took over lead while Tommy took over rhythm, & sometime drummer & bassist. Tommy also one of the rare number to win the Chet Atkins "certified guitarist" award. Watch the whole clip, see the skill, the talent, the humour, the love of 2 brothers clowning around, sheer genius ! I was fortunate to see them live in Sydney Oz :)
RIP Phil. One of the great lead guitarists. Gone too soon.
I took lessons from Phil for a while.
Phil actually taught Tommy how to play guitar when they were kids. (Tommy started off playing drums-which is maybe why his rhythm is impeccable).
That’s not what tommy says in his interviews lol. He always says that Phil basically told tommy “I play lead you play rhythm” that’s how tommy started learning to do the bass part at the same time as the rhythm. They’d listen to a record and him not knowing what a bass was taught himself how to play both parts thinking they were both the rhythm player
Actually is rhythm is great because he practise is ass off with an metronome most of time heheh that´s the way to go
I took lessons from Phil as well. It was in his flat in Coogee. Thirty Australian Dollaridoos for half an hour. And if he had a half hour gap until the next person, he will extend the session and we would listen to recordings of his favourite guitarists.
Sometimes he would have a gig with Tommy later that night which I would go to, and he would throw jokes at me through the audience. R.I.P. Phil. Apart from being a great guitarist, he had a heart of gold. Same with Tommy.
also explains why he plays the guitar like a percussive instrument
lovely how tommy moves so much always on stage
I love, I LOVE how they're both always smiling throughout. Glorious, glorious stuff. Thank you.
SAw these 2 playing in a band called Goldrush back in the day and it was mind blowing.
Yes and Tommy was killing it as the drummer.
as did i many times just sensational the best of times
R.I.P. Phil, thanks for the amazing music, you'll never be forgotten.....
if you have regrets in life see them live you dont know what your missing
If there is anything done on guitars that is more amazing than what the Emmanuel brothers do in this video I simply cannot imagine it!
Dave Arbic Shawn Lane. Check Gray pianos flying
Even John McLaughlin used to warm up. These brothers went from 0-200 in an instant. Just amazing. I miss Phil. RIP.
Groove in Peace Phil !!
No one can jam better with Tommy other than Phil... Rip Phil.
First time I listened I was appropriately dazzled by the musicianship, the second time I noticed how masterfully Phil controls his dynamics and tone on that Strat. I've never heard it done better.
As much music as I have listened to for 67 years, and every kind of music I've listened to from 50's rock, early country music from the 50's, to hard rock today like Five Finger Death Punch, - I've never seen more talent than this right here for the guitar talent of these two! The strangest part for me is, - I never heard of them before!!! I listen to all kinds of music 8 or 10 hours a day, 24/7! How I ever missed this, I don't have a clue!!! Thanks to RUclips and the people who brought this incredible talent to us, Thanks!!!
if I were born and brought up with Tommy, I wouldn't have been half as good as Phil is. Being born somewhere is a coincidence, but to be able to complement each other like this is pure talent. This is pure fun and music, no strings attached! (pun intended)
They were raised from boyhood in a musical family in Australia. They have been playing for more than 50 years.
These guy s are in tune!
Sure Phil will be impressed with the father and son comment lol, two most talented guitarist brothers on the planet - both fantastic and heva enjoyed many concerts over the years. Phil is great bluesman, both are, Tom just known for wider variety and literally can play anything.....enjoy his Dragon medley, he played with them for a short while. Thanks to both for sharing what stems from sheer talent in your DNA and putting in the work to develop it.....sensational.
I would have loved to be one of there neighbors growing up. I could just imagine hearing them play on the back porch as kids.
Few but the finest guitarists play each other's in a duet fashion, come on dudes practice !!!!!
Fantastic...I could watch this all night !
Absolutely stunning! The two brothers really complemented each other to beyond perfection.
RIP Phil.
Only one word: wow!
beautiful performance
Everyone watching this can be secure in the knowledge that there has never been, past or present, any 2 musicians that could do any better ! Should be a law against one family having that much talent !😎👍
I come back to watch this and the show where they do the Shadows medley every month or so. Never seen this level of musicianship, connection & love.
Breaks your ❤️ that Phil passed.
Should be compilations of however many shows they videoed. As a player this is everything I would ever want...
these two are unstoppable
Man do these guys know how to put on a show!
Love their nod at 7:30 to Rick Derringer's "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo." Rick and The McCoys were my first rock concert at age 14 in 1965.
I had no idea there was another Emmanuel. Mind blown. Are there more of them, like the Wooten Brothers (Reggie & family)
There are six kids, four of them play.
So, yes they ARE like the Wooten Brothers. Amazing.
Scott Hogue Except they are not all brothers. Some are girls. :)
I've seen these guys live many times but I'm always blown away by what they can do.
Walk Don't Run - Wipe Out - Pipeline ... learned on these like so many.
Ended up liking Little Feat, Dixie Dregs, Phish, Hellecasters!
Two of the best guitarist the world has ever seen :)
Insanely awesome
RIP Phil Emmanuel
Lovely to see two playful brothers together
Wow !! Это что-то ! Супер-профессиональное исполнительское мастерство.
Aerobatic on guitars. Bravo, brothers!
Whaaaaaat theeeeee fkkkkk.... After listen Tommy for years i listen today first time both.. That one guy is so good, may Happen... But two guys is unbelieveble.. God save hand made music..
Those guys are pretty AWESOME.
Fucking Aussie talent!
l can definitely feel another Playlist coming on! l could watch and listen to Tommy all day. Other than a little bit of The Shadows, l'm not normally into instrumentals. But this champion Aussie, brings the stage alive with his guitar.
Remember seeing these guys playing in the old Pacific Hotel beer garden about 20 odd years ago ..fantastic live band !!
So glad that the acoustic didn't work because this became EPIC!!
omg omg I saw them live in the early 80's at the Armadale in Melb , and let me tell everyone that it was absolutely incredible . They had a Duel and wow Phil is shockingly quick It excites my thoughts no end . Funny how you forget some Amazing moments . I met Phil one day 5 years ago ,really down to Earth guy , gave my son and his band a few tips
Absolutely amazing! Theses guys must have started playing in another life and carried on. Truly gifted musicians.
Old Ma Emmanuel..."Phil...Tommy...shut that racket up I'm trying to watch Neighbours here...!"
So cool, I love when Tommy switches to the drum part on Wipeout!
It's good to listen to Tommy, get my acoustic rocks off, then listen to Phil to get electric socks off. It's like they were born to say 'hey I know you need to listen to my brother for some change in style' : )
Tommy always plays that shuffle, what is it with him and that shuffle. Maybe it is the just right combination of fingerpicked country and ripe blues so it comes from his influences, Chet Atkins and merges fingerstyle with picking. : )
These guys just don't understands the words impossible or limits, it looks like they just do whatever they want no matter how hard it may seem.
The Emmanuel Brothers
Variety Show.
Always a pleasure.
I was lucky enough to have Tommy perform at my local music store about 10 years ago. A truly amazing talent and Phil actually lives in the same town as I do now.
Not just phenomenal players, but Great entertainers. These guys live guitar.
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat??????? This isn't another level, it's another stratosphere!!!!
