Bro of Tommy Emmanuel, what a great. RIP.
Phil has just passed away. I'm crying as I watch this. A great guitarist. I'm going to miss you mate.
Humility and genius in one package. An extraordinary musician who deserved greater accolades than he received.
What could be greater than the love he gets from everybody who ever heard him? Never even saw a negative comment even here on youtube. Such a spreader of joy.
Many a time saw both Phil and Tommy perform in various pubs in Sydney in the 1980's, always a great show and in awe of their brilliance. This is a great clip which I'll treasure. Phil should be inducted into some world hall of fame, I reckon
We lost one of Australia's greatest today, not just as a guitarist but a bloody top bloke
Phil was an absolute beast on guitar. I truly admire Phil and Tommy as true guitar greats. Phil was amazing. He will be missed for sure. I shed tears when I heard the news. My heart goes out to the family.
I had a one on one performance in the 80s at the hoey moey at Coffs Harbour when I walked in as he was setting up ,he asked what would you like to hear ?
He played the most amazing version of run like hell for me.
Absolute gentleman and sadly missed
Man he was good at playing that guitar. An absolute master.
aye
Shone like a star man. Only found out now he died. Totally rocked hey!! Phil & Thorpie Simply the best of Australia & hero's of consciousness on top!~
If there is a "musical gene" the Emmanuel family definitely has it! Perhaps the best sibling guitarists of all time.
tedmich i agree, what a fantastic talented family.
You are right
One of my biggest regret’s was not meeting Phil. I learnt guitar when I was 12 after hearing Phil play joy on a surf movie.
He was amazing and intelligent with his playing.
Rest in peace, old friend.
Now that's the way to really drive a telecaster!!!
A true master of guitar. With much respect, R.I.P.
RIP, never thought I’d see anyone play both sides of while my guitar gently weeps. Eric and George. Phil’s a great talent.
Always knew he was the rough version of Tommy, watched them both live about six foot away and together too, absolute aussie legends!!
Phil and his little brother Tommy, are two of the best guitarist that ever play. If there were immortals they would definitely leading the band. RIP Phil.
Best version of this song ever
Phil doing a George piece Clapton played on like he thinks Beck would do it ! WOW
Why didn't he get the worldwide recognition like Tommy does? He was brilliant! RIP Phil.
Phill, you are very missed, music oozed out of the wonderfully talented Emmanuel family, they felt it and performed with such relaxed fun and enjoyment you listen with the biggest grin and happiness they were some of Aussies very best.
I still come back and listen to the solo at 2:45 few times a year and how they play against each others timing with the lap steel player at 3:30. It's unreal RIP Phil, you were an intrinsic beast with massive feel and ability. You and Tommy were lifelong musos. Lessons to be taught. I hope there was enough footage of you for young proteges to learn from :)!
pedal steel*
My mouth still drops when I see and hear Phil play. I have been following him since 1982 along with his equally talented brother Tommy.
World class both. I miss Phil. But for me he remains the guitarist I prefer to listen to. By the way, the whole person Phil Emmanuel was a
positive revelation for me. R.I.P. Phil, you will never be forgotten.❤️️😔🙏
Greatest electric guitarist that ever lived, RIP Phil
Oh Man i've loved Phil Emanuel's guitar a very long time. Right back to Goldrush live days in Hornsby & all over Sydney. Funny the media was always on Tommy but to me Phil could go further out than Tommy ( into space almost, at times lol ). A true genius yet it was mostly Tommy who got the media & I know it's not a contest but he just couldn't go all the way with Phil on a guitar.
Phil would reach places Tommy just couldn't keep up with. I so miss Phil, only just found out he died tonight as more of my youth hero's are gone. Phil & Thorpie simply the best of Australia.
Vale Phil, thanks for your incredible talent & of course the music. RIP legend.
I can't believe you are gone, I can't imagine what Tommy is feeling. R.I.P. Phil, you brought great joy in my life and others as well through you're love and playing of music. May the God's look after you.
RIP Phil Emmanuel a Great guitarist, I remember you playing 'Nights in White Satin' with King Dog at the 'Governors Pleasure' at the Rocks in Sydney in the 70's and later showing your guitar artistry at the Rails in Byron in the 2000's RIP
R.I.P Phil
I saw Phil last at Merimbula about 3 years ago, tearing up sultans of swing BIG TIME. I have it on Video.
RIP Phil :( thanks for the music.
Phil comes through our little country town occasionally usually with Pop Standen and I am just memerized everytime he plays. He "FEELS THE MUSIC" and I for one feel every note. Yep he gives me a feeling with soul and ultimate depth of spiritual experience.
His face at the end right as he finishes shows you it never gets old for him.
RIP Phil, brilliant talent
Probably the greatest electric guitarist
RIP Phil Emmanuel. One of the world's elite guitarists . . .
Phil was the best, saw him in different genres in pubs, clubs in Sydney in the 1980s. Whether in unison with brother Tommy or not, they were the absolute best in Aussie guitarist legends and makes me very proud they were Australians and proved to the world we have the best
Legends never die.
RIP Phil, thank you for the great music
if I could listen to her and his brother for all eternity , what a heaven that would be...
Absolutely brilliant. The best improvisation I've ever heard. True musical genius from one of Australia's all time guitar greats.
R.I.P. Phil Emmanuel. Thanks for the music!
Phil plays a definitely masterful version here. Jeff Healey has a truly astonishing version as well. There's a tendency for guitarists (Prince) to add more notes and really show off with this sublime song of George Harrison's.
My favorite is Eric Clapton's original, since it laid the ground work, and captured the weeping of the guitar perfectly.
Game over ! No one compares
I had the privilege of meeting both of them, Both awesome blokes!
All the best of the very best Australian Musos, as far as I'm concerned.
Vale, Phil Emmanuel. You will be missed but the legacy of your music will live on.
