He was named the best acoustic guitarist in the world the last 2 years. I've seen him live several times and for me they were the best shows I've ever seen. I 've seen The Who and Paul McCartney among others too.
Tommy is the greatest living guitar player. In fact it's easily arguable,,,ever. If you have even a doubt or speculate see him live and then you will know. The man is a force of nature.
Honestly, why all the speculation about Clapton? It's not about who is the best guitarist of all time, who has better technique or who is more known. Tommy here shows exactly what music is all about: having fun. Its never a competition, its a thrill. When I play with other musicians I don't try to prove I'm better, I enjoy the perfect connection and understanding you only get during intercourse. Only ones who experienced it know what I'm talking about. The brilliant thing is, anyone can experience it. DJ Shuffle exactly well said, my sentiments exactly..although I had an argument with this guy on you tube the other day who say's you're no good if you look at the fretboard...so Tommy is no good??
tyson1ize Ah... that is a different kind of magic. When you play on an instrument, there are 2 types of playing. The first is what I like to call a 'session' type of playing. This is where you concentrate on what you play and try to play it perfectly; you concentrate on technique, finger positioning and rhythm. Its most commonly used during recording sessions where its important to have the best takes for the best mix. The second type of playing is magical. Its like stepping over an invisible line and you don't really notice it. One moment you're concentrating on your part, then suddenly you just feel a surge of confidence; you close your eyes and let your fingers lead the way. Its difficult to explain. The best way I can describe it is you no longer pay attention to how you play it, you let your soul envelop the instrument and play it. Suddenly there are no wars in the world, everyone lives in peace and happiness saturates the air. Your music penetrates you to your core and fills you. So in order to shut the reality out, you no longer pay attention to your fretboard and close your eyes. That's what every musician longs to achieve and experience. After all its like smoking a pipe; its not about the nicotine or how cool you look, but its about the experience.
yes but a musician can still achieve that 'and' glance where ever he or she likes it's about freedom, the freedom to look at the fretboard if you want and not get hung up on some misnomer about where a good guitar player should or should not look, for one, it's limiting and contrary to what the magic is about, look at all the great's they have this freedom, and they all at sometime glance at what they're doing for what ever reason, and really, it's nobodies business where they're looking, Tommy looks at the fretboard regularly when playing live and does not mean that he is not a brilliant guitar player or entertainer.. also the magic as you described doesn't happen 'because' a player doesn't look at the fretboard it happens through freedom...I have those moments when I'm playing ..at times ...not many, lol but they do happen both live and in my studio and if I stopped to think oh shit I'm looking at the fretboard the magic is lost

I've been fortunate enough to see Tommy live twice. Once at a winery. It wa a small venue and I sat at his feet and just watched in amazement. The second time was at a Performing Arts center on a college campus.(Cal Poly San Luis Obispo). He had a brother Named Phil who was also a phenomenal guitar player and many times played together. Sadly Phil passed away in 2018 at the age of 65.

Tommy manages gracefully and enthusiastically to do the impossible. No, not those amazing riffs and runs. What's impossible is how he is able to do those amazing riffs and runs and still maintain the musicality of whatever he's playing. When you can pull off those genius light speed improvisations and variations and make it an addition and not a distraction to the soul of the tune, you have really accomplished something and this man, this gift to us all, does it every single time. Just amazing. Thank you Tommy. You've certainly made my life richer.
There's no superlative I could add that hasn't already been expressed - been a fan of your guitar artistry since you exploded to my reality when both of us were young :)
I saw this first on Facebook. I could listen to your talented playing all day! I think that my comment went along the lines of "Oh my oh my, if I was just 1/10th as good as this, I'd be playing all day long!!!!"
That arrangement is just SICK. I used to be a TE skeptic too but no more - and I apologize to the universe. Just TRY to play the parts with the McCartney perfect 8th note bass line and the syncopated melody on top -and accompaniment - it's impossible. This is as difficult as any piece in the classical repertoire but a helluva a lot more fun!! Great respect TE.
FunkMasterJ oh yes, they exactly take you nearer to the g - spot ( guitar spot) that makes your fingering even more accurate resulting in a deeper tone. Until now it showed better understanding of the music to only the yang part of the society but recently it has affected us all. True is the mighty power of the checked shirt and old jeans.
Arijit Mukherjee Damn right. It worked for John Fogerty, Neil Young, and John Mellencamp. A recent study showed that it had a direct influence on record sales. I'm not sure about sound quality, as such, but I'm guessing it helped with acoustics somehow. Flannel being a conductor, and all.
Amazing From 3:26 till the end " Ok fellow guitar players you can cover me to this point, now try this " Plus at 3:09 this run is awesome and he just throws it in like it it is effortless.
never has a comment been so true, I just got halfway through the lady madonna section and I was like theres no way I'm playing the speed up section haha
He's clearly got more chops and talent than I have in a small part of my fingernail and plays the acoustic cleaner than maybe anyone. Yet his music just leaves me cold, I'm utterly uninvolved in it. To me it is - to be blunt - just him showing off, not communicating via the instrument. Whereas someone like Kent Nishimura, I can't turn him off, the musicality is foremost, the technique is not rammed down your throat.
First time I found Tommy, I wanted to break my guitar in half. Then he inspired me, I can’t wait to be old with guitar in hand. Love the soul in his music.
watching this reminds me of the time when my friend was talking about the joys of making music. So then I asked him: "Is it still making music if you're playing somebody else's music?" I felt like such an idiot when he answered "Making music doesn't need to mean making your own song, it can also mean to make a song yours."
I keep returning to this video, not just for the high, but to try and figure out how he can sound like an entire band just by himself. The rhythm, the bass, the melody line, the strumming, the drumming, the back up riffs, chords delivered coherently in perfect timing with such clarity and flourish. That on an acoustic guitar with no fancy remote gadget hook ups or back ups. Tommy Emmanuel cannot be human...he's fooling us. He's a visitor from some Planet of beings way superior to us humans.
Been admirer of Tommy and his brother Phil(R.I.P.)since the 70s.Seen him numerous times from small pubs to concert halls and he always amazes. However one small criticism, his albums for the most part have very generic feel to them. All very well played but could use a dynamite producer.Anyway my big moment happened when I was jamming at a blues club playing some wailing pentatonic blues wanking(Red House) when afterwards he emerged from the crowd and shook my hand saying "Great job ,man"I was speechless.I think back and wonder ,did that happen? It was long ago but yes!
Amazing Tommy,,, Well sorry for my english but i'M canadian and speak french,,, do you remember when you signed the guitar to my uncle Patrick norman From Quebec ????? it,s one of your best Fan and me too you're Awesome,,,Cheers from Canada ( Quebec )

Even his shirt is better than mine.
Does it matter?
The tonal properties of your shirt play a huge part in your sound. It's why some shirts are referred to as "loud"
FunkMasterJ oh yes, they exactly take you nearer to the g - spot ( guitar spot) that makes your fingering even more accurate resulting in a deeper tone. Until now it showed better understanding of the music to only the yang part of the society but recently it has affected us all. True is the mighty power of the checked shirt and old jeans.
canadianroot haha
Arijit Mukherjee Damn right. It worked for John Fogerty, Neil Young, and John Mellencamp. A recent study showed that it had a direct influence on record sales. I'm not sure about sound quality, as such, but I'm guessing it helped with acoustics somehow. Flannel being a conductor, and all.
Please don’t ever switch to decaf.
Amazing From 3:26 till the end " Ok fellow guitar players you can cover me to this point, now try this "
Plus at 3:09 this run is awesome and he just throws it in like it it is effortless.
never has a comment been so true, I just got halfway through the lady madonna section and I was like theres no way I'm playing the speed up section haha
@@frankslade33 it takes time to realise they don't write music for players this good.
It is effortless for him.
it's not that hard bro
First time I found Tommy, I wanted to break my guitar in half. Then he inspired me, I can’t wait to be old with guitar in hand. Love the soul in his music.
T.E. is such a brilliant musician/guitarist , it looks like he really loves to play! Now i'm going to throw my guitar away .
watching this reminds me of the time when my friend was talking about the joys of making music. So then I asked him: "Is it still making music if you're playing somebody else's music?"
I felt like such an idiot when he answered "Making music doesn't need to mean making your own song, it can also mean to make a song yours."
Daytripper/Lady Madonna (by The Beatles) - Tommy Emmanuel
ОФИГИТЕЛЬНО! БЕСПОДОБНО! ИЗЯЩНО!
Dusted out my guitar now its time to go at it again. Thanks Tommy!
very good
You just played Blackbird
I keep returning to this video, not just for the high, but to try and figure out how he can sound like an entire band just by himself. The rhythm, the bass, the melody line, the strumming, the drumming, the back up riffs, chords delivered coherently in perfect timing with such clarity and flourish. That on an acoustic guitar with no fancy remote gadget hook ups or back ups. Tommy Emmanuel cannot be human...he's fooling us. He's a visitor from some Planet of beings way superior to us humans.
TOMMY is already legend! I'd like to know the 312 that don't like this performance and listen what they are able to play....
I don't think I can pick my guitar up again after watching that.
C'mon! Inspiration! Exaltation! Motivation! Not intimidationdeflationdemorilization..
Браво! Удивительный и позитивный человек!!!
Oh how i love this man's guitar playing!
Lord have mercy! Holy cow! That was SO INCREDIBLY GREAT!
Incredible! I'll never be this good, but despite that - you inspire me to pick the guitar up and practice even more!
Who needs multi-tracking anyway. This is amazing!!
Tommy. I am 49 and if I ever get to meet you….. I’ve made the biggest imprint in my life. I will cry!!!!!!!Hope you know that!!!! Love you man
Fantastic! Plays with his entire body and soul.
So wish that darned mic wasnt in the way of his left hand! Genius.
Whhshew...that was a close call.
He has two brains!
nah 10 brains one for each finger
@@carlloxley2058 he'd need 11 (one for his head!)
Okay, two things I hate about Tommy
1. He wasn’t my guitar teacher
2. He’s not my next door neighbor
I could listen to him all day!
11 me too
I Knew Tommy was good until I watched this. Tommy Is Phenominal. Beyond phenominal!
He's unbelievable!
I’ve been fortunate to see him live twice. He is truly amazing!
I could do that if I wanted too! I just don't want to...
Take'er easy dude
translateslowly I could probs do that if I knew how to play the guitar xD
***** Nah, if I got high then I'd THINK I was playing like Tommy!
+translateslowly I would learn this, but dont have 8 years of free time...
+Hunter caceres Nah man, Tommy is a freak and one of the greatest players ever. You need to be a natural to be that good.
Tommy has got to be the greatest friggin guitarist in the world.......
The most amazing guitarist ever, Tommy makes it talk,it talks to him, he just holds it; he does miracles with it. Have loved him since day one cannot find anyone else who can do what he does Phil is great but Tommy is the greatest.
Will I ever be able to play like You Tony?
Tony: 1:25
*_Tommy is possessed ... Call the Exorcist!_*
NO! Please don't!
Anyone else get startled with the "haha" at 1:26 ?
apprently he plays the "wrong" melody...but it still sounds good and cool as fuck so i was like who the fuck cares lol
It was a mistake. He made an actual mistake. I make those too. So our playing has something in common!
I love the way he laughs at how good he is and how much fun he has.
It makes me laugh when rock enthuiasts talk in revered tones about Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Santana, Van Halen etc as if they're super human!
This is superhuman!!😮
Nice one, Tommy!
Love you so much! You are my guitar god!
Man, you should really start doing tutorial on how you play the songs cause I can play most of the songs you know but when I play it sounds nothing like your version
HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!
You took the words out of my mouth...
4 years after you, and same reaction.
