THANK YOU for listening to BAND-MAID! The really great thing about this band other than all of the completely obvious things (like energy, talent, great songs, etc) is that they are pretty unexpected. Like who would have thought the rhythm guitarist (Miku) created the group if you were never told? Or the lead guitarist (Kanami) is the most shy in the group. There's just a lot of unexpectedness in their back story. Their music has evolved quite a bit since they've been together.
I'm a bass player myself, and MISA is a monster. Not only that, but the Japanese like to bring the bass up in the mix compared to most American music. Akane, the drummer, is just an absolute badass. Then there's Saiki (the singer). She's so beautiful and so talented. People try to put her into a certain box because she comes off a little different. But she really is a sweetheart just like all the others.
There are so many songs I could recommend, but I can see there are other MAIDIACS here with plenty of suggestions. Just pick a song... any song, and you pretty much can't go wrong. They're all that good. We like to think that BAND-MAID is one of the last hold outs of good, solid, rock music. Not to throw shade on anyone else, of course. Oh, and maid costume, please! :)

THE best Rock band on Earth (includes the happiest drummer ever!).
These ladies can change your life. In a world filled with darkness, they are a beacon of sheer joy! They have a magical ability to make you happy, and they are very addictive. Don't fight the addiction though. Any song you pick will be good, too. That's how great their songwriting skills are. Kanami the lead guitarist writes the music, and rhythm guitarist/2nd vocalist Miku with pigtails does the lyrics. She also started the band - she used to work in a Japanese maid cafe, and decided to mix the cute maid look with face melting hard rock. You should also know that they are very hard workers and just keep getting better and better. They also hop across genres, so they refuse to be "pigeon-holed" - they have more like this (Real Existence Live) beautiful ballads (Daydreaming MV, Page, About Us), speed metalish hard rock (Warning), hard groove rock (Manners or Bubble MV's although there's a good live of Manners mixed with another insanely fast song called Black Hole) - and proggy, crazy insane music (Black Hole, Giovanni), and on and on. Like I said though, they don't have bad songs and how many bands can say that. You can literally choose one at random! Not sure where you live but if you can make it to the US in October they are doing a concert tour!
The only thing better than Band Maid is watching someone find Band Maid for the first time.

Drummer = Akane Hirose, her nickname is GORILLA for a reason. And she loves her nickname, she is embracing that nickname. Can slay the drums and her go to stagefood are bananas :)

Cute yes, but supremely talented musicians at the top of their game. Lead guitar, Kanami, who writes all their songs is a musical genius. Her compositions grow ever more complex and melodic and her guitar work expands in leaps and bounds. They are the best band in the world and every member is the master of their art.
I've never seen anyone look quite so gutted when a song ended before. Thankyou for that, it made my day.

There is no word in any language on this planet to describe the amount of love I have for this band. Thank you for this. Watching people react to this band and fall in love brings tears to my eyes.
Quite rightly, something like the unofficial anthem of this band. They have the look, the talent, are creative, very obviously love what they do, and the positive energy in most of their songs is something we can't get enough of these days.
I would suggest the MV of 'Thrill' at this point to see their beginning, as it is the song that gave them their breakthrough in 2014. But be warned, the cuteness overload factor comes into play here as well. 🤭 At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter because you will never end up disappointed with absolutely any of these ladies' songs. 😇

The band formed in July 2013. Singer/guitarist Miku Kobato, formerly an employee of a Japanese maid café, envisioned forming a band that juxtaposed the maid image with rock music. Kobato recruited lead guitarist Kanami Tōno after an Internet search. Tōno had performed as a singer-songwriter and suggested her occasional backing drummer Akane Hirose for the new band. Hirose in turn suggested bassist Misa, with whom she had attended music school.On July 24, 2013 they had their first live performance at the PP Audition held at Osaka Deep, as a quartet with Kobato on vocals. Great reaction :) Hope you do lots of their songs! They have so many and they are all amazing- and they have many types of songs- song you never know what type of song a BM song will be!
They are NOT metal though! They are ROCK - with many influences and other styles- like pop and metal and punk. So some songs are pretty much like metal, others are far more pop.
They are all super talented musicians- the ones that will probably stand out first is Misa on bass and Akane on drums- but Kanami on lead is also a genius and the other 2 are fantastic as well.
There are far too many amazing songs to suggest just a few easily. But I will say, in almost all cases try to watch the official lives (never fan cams) - BUT- there are a few songs fans will recommend you watch the MVs (music videos) of- because they are better than any live we have footage of or are just great in themselves.
Warning, Blooming, Daydreaming, Dice, Manners, Bubble - you should watch the music videos of- especially the first 3. They are all great songs too.
For the next few lives- most fans will suggest Domination - and also onset- which is an instrumental.

What you will find out on your journey of Band Maid is their ability to mix genres. You’ll have rock, groove music, jazzy sounds, punk sounds. They could probably do country and have it sound great. I’m not sure if there is a limit to their talent. Check out their acoustic performance. Showcases Saiki’s voice even more.
Recommendations?...EVERYTHING. Even the dark and mysterious MISA on bass (bare foot assassin) is happy really...sipping whiskey and creating melodic thunder. Don't despair when the song ends...play it again!! 😁🤟🤟

Thank you very much for this nice reaction. As you said, "FREEDOM" is one of those songs that makes you happy when you hear it. You can feel and hear the positive energy of the Maids. And not only in this song 😉 .
I would recommend listening to Play (live), Choose Me (live), Onset (live) and one of my all time favorite songs Daydreaming 🥰.
But first, you should listen to Catharsis acoustic live. This is a limited release on their YT channel from their acoustic Christmas concert.I assume it will disappear quickly after ticket sales stop on 3/25/2022.

Miku (Mee-Koo) AKA Kuruppo or Small (Flappy) Pigeon - Band founding member and primary song lyricist ... Was working at a Maid Cafe and came up with the maid/band concept. Original vocalist - decided her range wasn't quite enough for what she wanted the band to achieve and to recruit a more accomplished and focused vocalist after the rest of the band was formed. She asked Kanami to teach her guitar - and she's gone from a few chords (mainly for show) and backing vocals to a solid Rhythm Guitar support for Kanami ... Spokesperson for the band.
Kanami (Can-Ah-Mee) AKA Princess, Mincho, Airhead (jokingly) by other band members - Lead guitarist and primary music writer ... Miko saw her doing guitar work on You Tube and asked to meet ... explained what she wanted to do with a band and Kanami jumped on board. Miku asked her if she knew any other musicians who might be interested and Kanami introduced ...
Arkane (Are-Kah-Nay) AKA Gorilla, A-Chan and Happiest drummer EVERRRR - Drummer and "band leader" (probably because she oldest and most responsibly behaved!!) ... A VERY accomplished drummer - Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) was so impressed by her talent that he asked if he could take a photo op with her backstage after a concert ... that kind of endorsement needs nothing further! When asked if she could recommend anyone for Bass she suggested fellow music school student ...
MISA (Miss-Ah) The caps are NOT a mistake! AKA the Barefoot Assassin (because she tends to kick her shoes off and wander around stage barefoot) - Bass ... Doesn't speak much at band interviews or much at all really. Can be regularly seen with a flask of alcohol on stage or (fuck it!) a full bottle ... but her Bass play does ALL the talking and It. Speaks. Volumes!!
Saiki (Psy-Kee or "psyche") AKA Sai-Chan, Ice Queen - Lead Vocals ... Was one of several vocalists interviewed off a casting call ... was happy with the band as a group - but super reluctant with the whole maid thing and needed a day to decide ... in the end possibility outweighed reluctance and she joined ...
This is THE tightest group i have seen since Iron Maiden in their prime (1979 - 1986) ...
The maid costumes are to create "the Gap" meaning the difference in what you are seeing demure maids and what you are hearing Rock Music. Popular in with Japanese bands.
MISA (bass) and Akane (drums) attended the Tokyo School of Music. It's a vocational school for musicians to be educated/trained for the Japanese music industry.
Miku (red flower) founded the band and writes the lyrics. Well worth looking up in English. Kanami (lead guitar) writes the basic music with MISA and Akane inputing their lines to complete the song. Saiki (main vocals) now is working with Miku on lyrics and she has the "We're Done" call in the studio.
Miku at one point was working 3 jobs to pay for her vocal lessons. Saiki was working as a backup singer and dancer before she was tricked into joining the band. MIAS and Akane were also working as backup musicians. Kanami was posting songs on the web when Miku asked her to help create a band that would wear maid costumes and play cool music.
Sruggled for 2 years until their MV "Thrill" got 2 million views on Facebook, with 45% of the views from Europe and the US.
They will be touring the US in October, 11 cities and I got my tickets.

⚠️Warning‼️ Please be careful! This band is very addictive. If you listen to some songs, every day, one of them will keep ringing in your head all day long! Especially if you listen to the same song many times, the symptoms will get worse. Also, if you continue to listen to other songs, you will find that most of the over 100 songs are dangerous. And before you know it, you can't get out of the pigeon hole.
BTW, Akane learned drumming from a gorilla 😂
Akane must be one of the happiest drummers around, she is always smiling. Although that may be because the other members of the band apparently sometimes go to her during live shows and pull funny faces trying to get her to mess up. It always makes me laugh that three members of the band are wearing the maid costimes, but MISA (the bass player) and Saiki (the singer) said nope and wear all black.
They do wear Maid outfits, just a different style.

Freedom is an earlier song and one they play very well live. Band Maid are : Miku-rhythm guitarist/vocals, is the founder of the band and she writes their lyrics. Kanami-lead guitar, Misa-bass, & Akane-drums all studied music and are very good musicians.Kanami pretty much writes the music, with Misa & Akane given free reign on their parts. Saiki is the lead vocalist and has an amazing voice. All Band Maid songs are good and the live versions are often better than the studio originals. I recommend you watch “Thrill”, their first video that became their breakthrough song. Their newer material is much more musically complex. Great reaction on this song. I’m glad you discovered Band Maid, the best rock band going !!!

Akane is the best. I stepped into Band Maid after someone showing me Babymetal a few years ago, and I loved this band instantly and luck would have it that they’re coming to DC in October. I pounced on those tickets. The only drummer I have as much fun watching as Akane is Junna.

Their ability to project their genuine joy when performing is definitely a big part of why their performances are so amazing. They enjoy the moment so much, and they really project that into the audience, and into the camera for the music videos too!
You'll be happy to know: Band-Maid has A LOT of music, and you basically can't miss - pick any song, it'll be great. It will also be different - they never really repeat themselves.
I had never heard of Band-Maid until using lockdown to watch lots of RUclips reactions. Once I saw my first video I became a huge fan and now have all the CDs and BluRays I could get my hands on from Japan. You have a lot to love here as all their songs are great and there is a large variety to their music. I would recommend the live version of Domination next as that one showcases the talents of the band. Happy Band-maiding !!

this is the pinnacle of live performances. PLAY and ONSET would be my #2 and #3. A true expression of delight at the mastery of ladies, especially AKANE.

From the same concert: "Domination" and also "Play". They do everything from acoustic ballads to thrash/speed metal-like rock. The bassist and drummer are professional musicians from the Tokyo School of Music -- been playing instruments since they were children. Likewise the lead guitarist -- who also composes many of their songs (but not "Freedom") -- has been playing since she was four years old. They are the solid music backbone of the band. The two vocalists were singers in other groups, and the backup vocalist only started learning the guitar after Band-Maid had formed. The backup vocalist also does most of the lyrics, and she was the founder of the band -- she had the idea of a group of "maids" who would play hard rock, instead of the sweet Jpop that Japanese people associate with maids.
Each and every one of these ladies is amazing. I am only sorry it took so long to discover them, but I am hooked. Love your reaction too. Every time I hear Band Maid, I feel just like you.
I got my ticket for Seattle show. It's an 8 hour drive but it's going to be worth it!
It's not just a drum solo. It's an AKANE drum solo!!!!! All of them are amazing.
The essence of what is being said in the song is that "I am going my own way, and you can either accept me as I am and walk with me, or go away."
It is a defiant, triumphant, joyful declaration of independence. Of personal freedom, and artistic freedom.
It is also what they live by. This is one of their earlier songs that used an outside composer assigned to them by their management company, but Miku wrote the lyrics. And with each new change of contract they have gained more independence. Miku is a tough little bird.
Also it was near this time they wrote "Alone," the first all-Band-Maid composition their managers allowed on a record. And it was very well received. (That is a good one to review too.)
Kanami (on lead guitar) had been trying for a long time to come up with a melody that would be approved, and had been so discouraged that she felt like giving up. But her bandmates, and most of all lead singer Saiki with her steady support and encouragement, got her through this and she proved herself brilliant at it.
So it was appropriate that this declaration of "Freedom," and "Alone" the first step in a direction 100% their own, were released on the same album.

It will take a lot of restraint and self-control to not try to research B-M on your own after your first experience. Since they have over 100+ amazing songs in their catalog, perhaps you should just dedicate a day for B-M each week? Next up should be "Domination" live and "Play" live from the same concert.
