How did The Hunger Games begin? Author Suzanne Collins says: "One night, I was lying in bed, and I was channel surfing between reality TV programs and actual (Iraq) war coverage. On one channel, there’s a group of young people competing for I don’t even know; and on the next, there’s a group of young people fighting in an actual war. I was really tired, and the lines between these stories started to blur in a very unsettling way. That’s the moment when Katniss’s story came to me."
One thing I loved about the Hunger Games when I first read it was that the author didn't have the characters brush off the trauma they went through. Especially in the last book where Katniss is especially messed up in the beginning. It made so much sense especially since these were children going through horrific situations, and I was glad to see an author write that in instead of having them as indestructible tropes.
It so interesting that you called the red headed tribute “fox face” and say that she might of even won if not for eating the poisoned berries, as that’s exactly what’s in the book! In the book we never learn her name, but Katniss nicknames her “fox face” too, and even theorises like you did, that she was probably the smartest tribute and could have possibly won. A popular theory is that she ate the berries on purpose to avoid having to kill. She’s actually a pretty unique character, since the book is all from Katniss’ pov, so she doesn’t even speak or have a name, and everything we learn about her characters personality is made up entirely from Katniss’ guess of her.
I suppose it would have ruined it if she got to the end with Katniss and Peeta. "A popular theory is that she ate the berries on purpose to avoid having to kill." Damn, that's a messed up theory.
@@RamblersIncyeh the theory really has no basis outside the movie. In the book it’s very clear that it was an accident. Her strategy was stalking other tributes and stealing their food. She saw Peeta get the berries and assumed they were safe. She was also “emaciated” by the time she died, so she was desperate for any food. People theorise she killed herself cos the movie showed that she had knowledge of plants and berries - however in the book she had no knowledge of this at all. She couldn’t forage for food, she simply stole from other tributes.
@@davidfairweather3301the part that bothers me most about the plant/animal training thing is that it doesn’t look like anything but a game of Memory, so it doesn’t seem to indicate ANY actual knowledge of the pictures she’s touching on

it’s honestly such a delight seeing reactors that are actually super perceptive and attentive to detail like y’all watching the hunger games. i feel like there are a lot of reactors that completely miss the nuance because they go in purely expecting an action movie
Although they mention that Haymitch was a Victor in the Games, I don't think they explicitly mention in the movie that he was from District 12. It's inferred when Peeta asks Katniss if she has ever met him, as Haymitch lives there but is essentially a hermit. Mentors are from the same District as the Tributes, so for 23 years Haymitch has been forced to prepare children from 12 for slaughter. Hence the alcoholism and self-isolation. It's an important part of how the Capital maintains control, as they basically force these Victors into a lifetime of repeated trauma.
@@RamblersInc to add fusiliers comment in the book catching fire it was said that president snow killed his mom and girlfriend for using the force field to win the quarter quell games that he was in.
It was implied that the trained kids were acting sadistic, in part, to get sponsors interested in them as well. also, I'm mad that the movie doesn't show Cato absolutely losing his mind with grief when his district partner dies. Also knife girl was being sadistic to Katniss because she was pissed about the blonde girl's death. It was revenge basically. I love the movies but they really missed out on humanizing the other children in these games. The books make it very clear that the other kids aren't the enemy, the capital is.
The 3-fingered salute isn't a sign of rebellion, at least not yet. It's a traditional salute to the dead for District 12 and probably 11 as well, a gesture of love, respect, and farewell. That's why District 12 used it when Katniss volunteered, they knew she was going to her death to save her sister because nearly every tribute before her had been killed and she was the first one ever to volunteer so they used the salute to the dead to honor her and say goodbye.
@@RamblersIncthat hand gesture was actually in District 12 only. District 11 had not seen it until after Katniss gave her respect to Rue after her death. The man from District 11 you asked if he was Rue’s father was not Rue’s dad. He was just one of the multitudes of people who had had enough and was pissed that they would kill a little girl. Rue had a mother who was a widow and she was the oldest of 5 kids. He father had been killed before the books began.
I think you're the first reactors I've seen who understood the bread throwing scene immediately. Most people don't get it or think Peeta was shit for throwing it on the ground, not realizing he was helping in the only way he could.
People are always so mad at him for it and I'm like "did you not see his mother beat him just then? He did the absolute best that he could and I don't see anybody else giving her food so maybe calm down" 😂😂😂 it makes me so mad
My biggest gripe with this movie (coming from a huge fan) is how dirty they did my boi peeta 😂 Cato hurt him really bad. To the bone bad on his leg. It was infected badly, blood poisoning, usually ends up killing people that dont have much medical access (most of the districts) Katniss cleans the wound as best she can (and she hates the whole thing). Them getting to the cave is a massive stuggle. And shes just trying to keep him alive. They talk, do their thing, the feast is announced and peeta refuses to let her go. She knows hell die. Hamich sends sleep syrup (highly potent sleep aid) and has to basically force peeta to have it. It knocks him out she gets medicine comes back. Helps with the meds which keeps peeta on a small mend, enough to keep going. Through the mutts their run up to the cornucopia has reopened his leg wound. Katniss uses her last arrow as a way to tourniquet his leg. The kato/peeta fight happen. Peeta is way worse off in the books then the movie shows. His x across the hand still goes down. They did cato dirty too because he falls, the mutts are trying to get at him, but what was in his feast bag? Full body armour. So literally cato is getting eaten alive all night. The sun starts coming up. Katniss and peeta have struggled to stay concious. Peeta asks if she can end it for cato . She has to undo the tourniquet which doesnt help peeta. Shots cato and then the berry scene plays out. When they get picked up its by ladder via their helicarrier thing. A current stops them in place on the ladder and katniss watches his blood pour as the6 are lifted in. A mad rush on peeta ensues. Later on its revealed that he had in fact lost part of his leg and is an amputee. And it causes him issues down the road. But the series just cut that all out 😭😭 Thank you for joining my ted talk lmfao
Also, when Katniss blew up the food the explosion broke her eardrum. She ended up sleeping under some brush for the night because she couldn't make it through the woods back to Rue in that state. Rue was alone all night
@RamblersInc It's not really a spoiler, but in the rest of the series Peeta's amputation is a big deal. I've seen viewers and commentators give the character a hard time since he has some clumsy moments- he basically just falls a lot and it reads like a typical plot convenience "oh the character is being chased and falls down, what a idiot" kinda thing- and it doesn't really make sense until you realize that in the source material he is missing an entire leg.
Something that the first book tells us that the movie unfortunately never does show well enough is that Katniss and her family were starving, and Peeta saved their lives by throwing Katniss that bread. Mr. Everdeen was a miner and he died in a mine explosion, the same one that took out Gale's father. Katniss was still 11 years old, and her mother shut down mentally and emotionally, she had no idea how to go on and she and her daughters had no money coming in and no food. Once she reached age 12, Katniss could take out tesserae, she could have her name put in the reaping more times, and get a year's worth of food rations for herself, her mother, and her sister (so her name was in the bowl 4 times at her very first reaping, once by law, and once by tesserae for herself, and again for her mom, and again for her sister). But until she reached age 12, she had no way to get that food for them. District 12 is very poor, so there was nothing extra that any neighbors or friends could give them; Gale was supporting his family of three siblings and himself and his mother, though his mother did work as a laundress. Peeta saw Katniss outside the back of the bakery, and he knew her from school, so he knew how bad off she and her family were. Katniss saw him getting hit by his mother, who was screaming at him for burning those loaves of bread, and she told him to toss them to the pigs as feed, but he purposely threw a loaf to Katniss so she had *something* to eat. Katniss tells the reader that loaf of bread was difference between life and death to her family. It got them through the next month until she could sign up to get the govt. rations and between that and the foraging she did in the woods, she was able to keep them fed. (Hunting came later. And just like Annie Oakley became an expert with a rifle at a young age in order to feed her family, Katniss became an expert with a bow. When hitting your target and missing it is the difference between having food on the table or going hungry, you get really good.)
Thanks for the extra info. Such a great way of telling us just how bad the conditions were for Katniss and her family (and for the average person un that district). I would've thought she'd been hunting since very young from the movie and that they never really went hungry except that one moment.
Yes i a wish they cast you ger cast for the flashback so we cna feel that ghe thing happened years before and not recent. But they cast original actor as a flashback makes you confused "oh thry've met before" but missed the important part that they've been knew each other for years although never had a contact unles that throwing bread scene.
I love this franchise so much. Jennifer Lawrence is just freaking perfect in this. And Donald Sutherland is one of the best villains in any movie ever.
@@RamblersInc Sutherland doesn't always play the villain but he doesn't play the hero either. Character actor all the way from the movie M.A.S.H. on. He's 195 cm so he has a habit of sloughing to look other actors in the eye. He does play science fiction/fantasy well and is interesting in the movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer as he mentors her in her new profession for example.
@@RamblersInc In the movie "A time to kill" starring Matthew McConaughey, Sandra Bullock, and Samuel Jackson I believe Donald Sutherland plays a good guy. He is Matthew McConaughey's attorney mentor. But yeah I don't think he's ever been the starring hero and something. At least that I can think of.
The whole series is brilliant, and manages to actually get even better from here on in! It's kind of a small miracle that they managed to adapt the whole thing so successfully - not to mention the cast continues to be absolutely STUFFED with top-tier actors doing some really great work. Excited to see you guys continue this! :)
Just because the question is one I haven’t heard before: in the beginning when she uses the leaves to determine the wind direction - this is twofold, so she knows what scents the animal may be smelling upwind (and stay downwind) and so she can accurately aim her arrow while accounting for the wind.
I wish they explained Haymitch better. He played in the 50th hunger games. They sent 4 kids from each district instead of 2. So he had double the numbers. He won by the force field around the arena causing an ax thrown at him to rebound and hit the other finalist. The capitol took this as a rebel move and killed everyone he loved, but let him live. Then, for 24 years at this point, he has mentored 2 kids from 12 and watched them die, as 12 has never had a winner. It's why he drinks, and he's so negative.
You needed a "God, that's messed up!" counter for this movie lol But seriously, great reaction. You two picked up a lot of the nuance that other reactors I've seen missed - like that the mother fell apart after the father was killed (in a mining accident) and Katniss had to take care of the sister. One thing they don't make too clear is that each kid has their name in to be chosen multiple times. One for each year between 12-18 and then they can opt to have their names in more often to get extra food for their families. So Katniss has her name in a bunch of time, whereas her sister only has hers in once, so it's even worse odds that her sister was chosen!
The people in the Capital: Just imagine the upper class of today, but magnified many times. Total privilege, hedonism, everything is given to them, and the other districts are little more than beasts of burden or slave colonies. All they want is to be entertained. Similar to the Roman Coliseum, but with gladiators thrilling the very rich mob, and a very smart Emperor in President Snow.
......A bunch of skittles shat on them..... not a sentence I ever thought I would hear in a reaction of a movie where children kill each other 😅 I love this franchise so much and I am glad you are reacting to it.
In the next movie keep in mind - Peeta lost his leg as a result of his injuries in the games, but that is left out of the movie. Being an amputee has an impact on his abilities and how people view him later on. Just something to remember if you see him struggling or people worrying about him!
@@RamblersIncthey changed it. the first director made some odd choices that the next director had to work around, including this. peeta’s disability plays a big part in the rest of the series so they still had to acknowledge he was struggling (in the next movies) but they don’t have the actual reason represented.
if it came down to katniss and rue i think katniss would sacrifice herself. She would never be able to kill someone who so much reminds her of prim. She would take peace in knowing Gale would care for her family. I have heard other reactors say they dont know why he didnt volunteer too but she would have never forgiven him because she needs to know her family will be taken care of. They alluded to this on the movies but after her dad died they almost died from starvation. Thats what you see in the bread scene shes so close to death. Peeta burned the bread on purpose and threw it to her risking the wrath of his parents.
Definitely agree. Katniss would never have been able to hurt Rue. Ahh I didn't know he burned it on purpose. It felt like he just randomly spotted her. I guess that's another detail the movie left out.
Risking the wrath of his MOTHER! From what I gathered, the father wasn't that bad, & he would trade a couple of rolls /a loaf of bread for a couple of squirrels/a rabbit. Peeta's mom was vicious even the dad was a bit scared of her.
You guys are so good at reading characters and catching all the subtle nuances that are meant to be insightful, even the ones that are hard to read because the movie doesn't elaborate on things we readers learned from the books. It makes me so happy to see, because truly it's easy to miss a lot. For non-readers watching for the first time, you can't even blame them if so much goes over their heads because the first movie really doesn't move below the surface much, which can be frustrating for those who know. The insight you gleaned about the mum from the tiny little interaction after the reaping was especially brilliant to me because that's one of the BIGGEST misses the movie makes in my opinion and you guys got it spot on immediately. I don't know you obviously but I still felt quite proud of you both in that moment.
Thank You 🙂. We're not so great at picking up info quickly but I have to give it to the actress that plays her mum because she portrayed her emotions really well (even if she didn't have much screen time).
@@RamblersInc She is an incredible actress, she pops up here and there in a lot of great movies and TV shows and she always does so much with very little. But don't sell yourselves short! I've been binge watching your reactions for a few days now and you're both very quick most of the time to be fair.
I think you are in for Katniss' whole story. Yes the world is very messed up at this point. This series has a very strange history. Scholastic Books publishes books for use in schools to teach students about different topics in an interesting way. That is how this started. 3 books to teach about politics, propaganda and war. They and the author Suzanne Collins were shocked when they were optioned for movies. She has another set for younger students called The Overland Chronicles also published by Scholastic Books. The Hunger Game books are brilliant and took over the best seller lists.
@@RamblersInc Oops sorry the 5 book series is actually called the Underland Chronicles. I don't see any film or TV adaptations. The first book is called Gregor the Overlander. " a subterranean world located under New York City. The Underland is inhabited by humans who traveled below hundreds of years ago, along with various giant versions of creatures like bats, cockroaches, and rats. According to the author, the series involves many topics relating to war, including biological warfare, genocide, and military intelligence."
@@RamblersIncBecause they get privileges others do not (aka hope.) This is why a lot of people from the middle class don't fight to change the status quo. They think they have a better chance of achieving success/moving up in class so they stay quiet, not realizing that the system isn't made for them to win either because whatever affects the poorer class will eventually catch up to them when said classes become eradicated.
"I don't think Liam Neeson is in this movie" now I can totally see him in this universe as his character from Taken but he's single-handedly taking out all the people in power to distroy the system that kills off children for entertainment
about the "dogs" in the ending. In the book they took all the dead kids and make them into a kind of zombie and mutated them; the dog like things they became had the original heads of the kids. But, they thought it would get them an R rating, so they didn't do it./
@RamblersInc Not heads lmfao eyes and their fur. Katniss is the one who recognizes it when the 3 of them are on top of cornucopia. shes horrified as she realizes she's staring into the eyes of the tributes. Their eyes are the same colours as the tributes, and katniss wonders if they are actually their eyes. The stature of each one is different. As she notes, the littlest one rue with her notes of colour and fur Cashmere has a soft flowy blonde coat Katniss wonders if they are the tributes or not and if they are, do they remember? but it isn't for sure if it's just mutt-ations (which is what they are called when no name. Jaber Jay's, mocking Jay's and tracker jackers are all mutt-ations) or really the dead tributes. Personally I don't think it is as katniss states in the book after the bloodbath but before the first canons, wondering if peetas body's already been shipped home I think it's more creepy this way in the psychological way. Which capitol and snow are great at
@@RamblersInceven more in thebook, she couldn't mercy kill Cato right away as he was blocked by the cornucopia. The mutts tore at him while he screamed for hours before he was where she could hit him. And Peeta was in much worse shape too and nearly died while waiting for it to be over.
If my memory serves me right, each district has products that they provide the capitol: 1- fashion (textiles, gemstones, jewelry) 2- arms, (soldiers, weaponry) 4- fisheries, aquatic products 5- lumber 6-not sure but I think it was technology. 10- electricity 11- agriculture 12- coal 13- disintegrated after the war. @@RamblersInc in the prequel, there is a side story about somebody from district 2 that I think is very important as to why they are in many ways very submissive to the capitol. Don't want to spoil you but I think you would understand why they didn't wage rebellion against the capitol.
Fun reaction…now on to the sequels to see how this all plays out. I never did read the books but I’ve enjoyed rewatching the movies over the years. Jennifer Lawrence is great and I think this was the first film I ever saw her in.
The “Bunch of Skittles” remark was good! 😂 Great reaction! Well done & thank you for letting us watch along with you! (Maybe last season’s district winner did not have to participate)
I’m not crazy about the sequels but this one is pretty good. First time I saw it I felt legitimate unease when they were finally bought into the arena. It’s rare for me to feel that.
The districts with special training academies are the ones loyal to the capitol, they are so far brainwashed with the capitol into believing its an honor to be in this "pageant" in the movies its only 1 and 2 but i believe in the books 4 was also a career district
Really good movies. Technically a quartet or quadrology (not counting the later "Ballad of Songs and Snakes" - which I have not seen yet) They have joined the "grab all the money you can + 10% with a multi-part movie" bandwagon, so book 2 "Catching Fire" is the sequel, then their bandwagon entry for book three "Mockingjay" is in two parts.
Lucky for you there are two more episodes. Good job on this one. I think it's supposed to be a cross between Rome at its most decadent and what a decadent USA would be. Take the next step. It's lots of creepy fun.
Besides the training, one of the reason the out districts don't win as often is because they're all suffering from hunger and starvation most of the time, so even the little training time and good food they get they can't compare in strength to the more well fed tributes. Could also explain why Rue is so small! Not enough nutrients to grow
The soup was for Warnung up from inside, very important when you must sleep on the cold outside,+ every body needs salt & that is rar in wilderness so for that is the soup important too !!
14:58 Because these people live in the Capitol instead of one of the districts; THEIR kids aren't going to be the ones chosen for the Games, so it doesn't affect them personally.
5:50 wow I never thought of that I’m glad I watched your reaction I always just thought she was just being a nice old lady but this adds another layer 13:42 help 😂 😭
This is one of my favorite reactions to this movie yet! Yes, the books came first, are even better than the movies, and if you go to a library or bookstore you'll find them in the "Young Adult" section. As brutal as they are, and well written, that seems absurd to me. The "Liam Neeson" and "they look like a bunch of M&M's sh*t on them" comments I especially liked. The only person in the Capitol not extra-colorful or extra-something is the President, played by Donald Sutherland, and he gives one of many excellent performances. You may have missed the song at the end--check it out, I especially liked the lyrics.
Hi, I know I'm a little late to the party, but I have a couple things to mention. 1st off, wrong Liam.😂 @ least u got the 1st half right.😊 Ok, 2nd, the book goes into much more detail about Panem which is the world the Hunger Games take place. Basically, it is America after a bunch of natural disasters, war & famine. For awhile, the world was in chaos. Wanting to get back to some sense of order, the people decided to create a governing body, hence the Capitol & 13 Districts were created. Each District provided some sort of natural resource/commodity, District 12 coal, District 11 agriculture, ie fruits, nuts & some grain & so on. The rebellion happened for 2 main reasons: 1. The Capitol was suppose too distribute supplies to the Districts , & they did not. 2. District 13 was a military District, they believed they could run Panem better than the Capitol. So, noticing the other Districts discontent, they led the rebellion. As we know, the Capitol squashed the rebellion & leveled District 13. That is why currently there are only 12 Districts. The Capitol, not only, created the Hunger Games, but kept the Districts separated from one another, hence the electrified fences. The Capitol felt since they were separated they could not form another rebellion. Because the Capitol didn't want to be using up electricity for the outlying Districts, they only electrify the fences to District 12 & possibly 11 when there is a Reaping. O, the Capitol itself is situated in the Rocky Moutains in Colorado, and the only ways in & out are by the train/airship. Also, those weird looking dog things are creepier in the book. They were werewolf looking creatures w/distorted humanoid faces & w/the eyes of the fallen tributes. They were genetically engineered creatures created by using the DNA from the eyes of those kids that died. In the book, Katniss was afraid she'd see Rue's eyes looking back @ her from 1 of those "MUTTS". Any kind of mutated monster/creature created by the Capitol is considered a "MUTT". In the book, Peeta has a huge crush on Katniss. Gale, "Liam Neeson",😂 wants to be w/Katniss & hints @ it right before the Reaping. Katniss just thought he was being weird. She always thought of him as just her hunting buddy & best friend. Also, He felt like he could think about a possible relationship because this Reaping was his last. He was 18yrs old. Katniss doesn't know how she feels about either 1, although in the cave w/Peeta she felt something. But, she pushed her feelings aside telling herself that they were both pretending for the show in order to survive. When Katniss blows up the sadistic kids supplies, she goes deaf in 1 ear. But, after the games, her hearing was restored. Peeta loses his leg in the book, & Katniss doesn't find out about it until she sees him on stage for the victor interview. 1 last thing, the Japanese movie BATTLE ROYALE takes place on an island. The kids think they are going on a field trip, & while on the bus they are drugged & wake up in a classroom on the island. The selected group of students, possibly only Seniors 17/18yrs old, are from a troublesome school. They are pitted against 1 another until 1 is left alive. The kids killing each other, having a large area ss your arena & there being only 1 victor is very much like the Hunger Games. Anyway, I enjoyed your reactions & hope u continue w/the franchise.😊👍
Batter late than never 😊 Ah ok. We got that wrong. There's only 12 left. Yeh those mutts sounds crazier in the books We have to check out Battle Royale at some point.
Yeah, Peta always loved Kat, he purposely burned the bread so she didn't die and was beat the hell out of by his mom, movie didn't show it. His mom was insanely abusive and evil. Poor sweet rue, her dad died for starting the riot in district 11
Y'all need to finish this trilogy then watch the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes which recently came out and is the origins of President Snow and alot of references to this trilogy
Skittles! Such an appropriate description of the Capitol culture: colorful and disgusting. I hope that you'll continue on with the series: Hollywood definitely left its mark all over it, but the bones still tell a powerful and significant story.
liam neeson..maybe in the next episode!.. 😊these 4 films are definitely modern classics, and the role of president snow - the swan song of the GREAT donald suderland.
As good as the movies are, the books are better, providing details that answer your questions. I have no favorite from the series -- book or movie -- because, for me, together they constitute an arc. Book 1 has the exposition and starts the rising action, Book 2 continues the rising action leading to a turning point, Book 3 has the climax and denouement. I thought splitting Book 3 into 2 movies was greedy and unnecessary because they left out so much of the book to unnecessarily add more "action" scenes rather than continuing the story arc. But as movies, they're very well made -- much better than other movies based on well-written books. Awesome cast, great director, original source material from Collins. The latest film is a prequel. I read the book because it was a gift but I have no interest in seeing the movie. Since I don't watch reactions to movies I've never seen (or didn't like) I won't be watching that reaction. But I'm sure most of your followers will encourage you to watch it. I suspect they emphasized the parts of the book I didn't care for but I could be wrong. I just thought Mockingjay (the last book and movie) was the best ending and I was satisfied to leave this world where it ended.
I see what you mean about money grab when they split movies. Maybe sometimes it's probably a way to get around cutting scenes. Were the movies that different from the books? Not in the sense of context and added detail, but different paths taken?
@@RamblersInc Hunger Games, unlike Harry Potter, did not put in too much of what was not in the books. They did, however, leave out some points that lead into misconceptions. For instance, Peeta lost a leg from the cut from Cato's sword and he wore a prosthesis afterwards. I believe the producers decided it would make the sequels difficult somehow to have Peeta wearing a prosthesis. This matters because reactors in the sequels criticize Peeta for being slow and a drag on Katniss and others. The Victors' Village is not explained but I can forgive that. It just leaves people who haven't read confused.. Some scenes were cut but that's understandable when moving from one medium to another. But that wasn't an issue for me with the Mockingjay split; they just lingered on some scenes longer than necessary. I understand the problem with filming backstories but I wish they could have added a line of dialog here or there to explain some of the characters -- including the nature of each District. We know from the books, for example, District 1 is luxury items, District 2 is masonry and defense, District 3 is general electronics, District 4 is fishing, District 5 is power/electricity, District 6 is transportation, District 7 is lumber, District 8 is textiles, District 9 is grain, District 10 is livestock, District 11 is agriculture, and District 12 is coal mining. All for the benefit of the Capital, the seat of government. This helps explain characters in this movie but more so in the sequels.
Good point. If the first book has it, then we should have gotten a line or few minutes about what each district were known for. Shrouding them in mystery doesn't make sense unless we were never supposed to get that information. Thanks for the info.
I really liked your reaction, I appreciated the way you followed the film. I was quite disappointed at the comment about the female protagonist not having smiled yet and subsequently highlighting when she *finally* did. Do you ever keep notice if/how much the male character in a dystopian or action film smiles? This is a teen girl living in poverty and fear having to compete in a life or death rigged reality show and one of your main reactions 1/3 through the film is "the girl hasn't smiled yet". Also, that just may be her personality. Again, for every broody male character, do you wonder why he doesn't smile? Or is he just allowed to be like that? "Oh man I liked the Godfather movies, but man does that Marlon Brando ever smiles??" Something tells me that sounds silly to you. That's how you sounded too. Please do better.
Thanks for watching 😊 Oh, I didn't mean that she SHOULD smile, but poor Katniss had just been flung in hell masquerading as a gameshow. I was just noting her compared to other characters in the tournament, some of who seem happy to be there. Even Peeta lets out a little smirk from time to time. It's a good way for the director/actor to show us, the audience, even if it's a small thing, just how traumatised she is already. I wouldn't smile either, from losing her father and looking after her mom and little sister at a young age, to this nightmare. The moments she smiles in this movie are noteworthy because it's where she feels slightly at ease or even a little comfortable i.e. when Peeta compliments her and every time she spots Rue. I may be completely wrong though. I apologise if it came across insensitive ❤️. Maybe I should have fleshed it out in the review like I did now.
How did The Hunger Games begin? Author Suzanne Collins says:
"One night, I was lying in bed, and I was channel surfing between reality TV programs and actual (Iraq) war coverage. On one channel, there’s a group of young people competing for I don’t even know; and on the next, there’s a group of young people fighting in an actual war. I was really tired, and the lines between these stories started to blur in a very unsettling way. That’s the moment when Katniss’s story came to me."
Wow. What a way to think up of a story.
She couldn’t forage for food, she simply stole from other tributes.

it’s honestly such a delight seeing reactors that are actually super perceptive and attentive to detail like y’all watching the hunger games. i feel like there are a lot of reactors that completely miss the nuance because they go in purely expecting an action movie
I just keep thinking, “What a nice reaction, you guyyyyyys.” Lmao
Although they mention that Haymitch was a Victor in the Games, I don't think they explicitly mention in the movie that he was from District 12. It's inferred when Peeta asks Katniss if she has ever met him, as Haymitch lives there but is essentially a hermit. Mentors are from the same District as the Tributes, so for 23 years Haymitch has been forced to prepare children from 12 for slaughter. Hence the alcoholism and self-isolation. It's an important part of how the Capital maintains control, as they basically force these Victors into a lifetime of repeated trauma.
I didn't think of it like that. That's really mentally scarring for him.
@@RamblersInc to add fusiliers comment in the book catching fire it was said that president snow killed his mom and girlfriend for using the force field to win the quarter quell games that he was in.
Yeh, I'm starting to feel that crossing Snow may not be a good idea.
@@Madisyn01and his little brother :-(
It was implied that the trained kids were acting sadistic, in part, to get sponsors interested in them as well. also, I'm mad that the movie doesn't show Cato absolutely losing his mind with grief when his district partner dies.
Ahh ok. Thanks for clearing it up.
"...they knew she was going to her death to save her sister". I forget just how really messed up that scene is.
There WERE 13 districts in the past. When they rebelled, 13 got destroyed. Now, there's 12.
Ooohhhhhh. ok, thanks for clearing that up.

I think you're the first reactors I've seen who understood the bread throwing scene immediately. Most people don't get it or think Peeta was shit for throwing it on the ground, not realizing he was helping in the only way he could.
Peeta is the best🧡
People are always so mad at him for it and I'm like "did you not see his mother beat him just then? He did the absolute best that he could and I don't see anybody else giving her food so maybe calm down" 😂😂😂 it makes me so mad
The Liam Neeson gag was so funny lol
Could have been better if it was Liam Neesons and Bruce Willie.
Never going to hear the end of that one.. lol.. 😂
😂
My biggest gripe with this movie (coming from a huge fan) is how dirty they did my boi peeta 😂
Cato hurt him really bad. To the bone bad on his leg.
It was infected badly, blood poisoning, usually ends up killing people that dont have much medical access (most of the districts)
Katniss cleans the wound as best she can (and she hates the whole thing).
But the series just cut that all out 😭😭
Thank you for joining my ted talk lmfao
Oh daaaammmmn. It sounds more brutal in the books, plus more of an uphill battle for Peeta.
Yeh that's a really messed up way to go for Cato.
@RamblersInc very much so! Alot had to be cut in each book sadly
Also, when Katniss blew up the food the explosion broke her eardrum. She ended up sleeping under some brush for the night because she couldn't make it through the woods back to Rue in that state. Rue was alone all night
@mommag3024 that too! Although that is fixed by the capitol
"Why does everyone look like skittles"? 😂 I needed that laugh today.
Everyone took the slogan "taste the rainbow" too far😂
"Why does everyone look like a bunch of skittles shat on them?"
He literally saved her life❤
Yes i a wish they cast you ger cast for the flashback so we cna feel that ghe thing happened years before and not recent. But they cast original actor as a flashback makes you confused "oh thry've met before" but missed the important part that they've been knew each other for years although never had a contact unles that throwing bread scene.

Now that I think about it...has Donald Sutherland ever not played a villain?
@@RamblersInc Sutherland doesn't always play the villain but he doesn't play the hero either. Character actor all the way from the movie M.A.S.H. on. He's 195 cm so he has a habit of sloughing to look other actors in the eye.
He does play science fiction/fantasy well and is interesting in the movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer as he mentors her in her new profession for example.

The whole series is brilliant, and manages to actually get even better from here on in! It's kind of a small miracle that they managed to adapt the whole thing so successfully - not to mention the cast continues to be absolutely STUFFED with top-tier actors doing some really great work. Excited to see you guys continue this! :)
Also, it's awesome that you started calling the redhead "The Foxy one" because in the book Katniss literally nicknames her "FoxFace" in her head.
It's a shame that berries took her out. She seemed like the smartest one.

Great reaction. The Liam Neeson thing was hilarious. Looking forward to the next one.
😂
That would’ve been a hell of a plot twist if Liam Neesom was chosen
All of a sudden President Snow gets a phone call.
"...I can tell you I don't have money, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills..." 😳
Just because the question is one I haven’t heard before: in the beginning when she uses the leaves to determine the wind direction - this is twofold, so she knows what scents the animal may be smelling upwind (and stay downwind) and so she can accurately aim her arrow while accounting for the wind.
Ahh ok. I didn't even think of one of the reasons being what the animal may be smelling.
That sounds like a LOT of PTSD. I'm not surprised he's like that now.
That's even more messed up.
That's a good way of looking at it. A futuristic version of Ancient Rome.
......A bunch of skittles shat on them..... not a sentence I ever thought I would hear in a reaction of a movie where children kill each other 😅
I love this franchise so much and I am glad you are reacting to it.

The chemistry & humor between you both is what makes these reactions so entertaining! Excited to watch part 2 now 😻
In the next movie keep in mind - Peeta lost his leg as a result of his injuries in the games, but that is left out of the movie. Being an amputee has an impact on his abilities and how people view him later on. Just something to remember if you see him struggling or people worrying about him!
Does he have a prosthetic in the movie or did they change that?
@@RamblersIncthey changed it. the first director made some odd choices that the next director had to work around, including this. peeta’s disability plays a big part in the rest of the series so they still had to acknowledge he was struggling (in the next movies) but they don’t have the actual reason represented.
@@serena959ikr? It’s so annoying they made him struggle for no apparent reason!
if it came down to katniss and rue i think katniss would sacrifice herself.
Peeta is the best🧡
The actor that played Cato also played teenage/adult Bjorn in Vikings, and most recently was on Heels
Whole series is surprisingly good.

That is how this started. 3 books to teach about politics, propaganda and war. They and the author Suzanne Collins were shocked when they were optioned for movies. 😨ok that's almost treading into horror movie territory.
As she notes, the littlest one rue with her notes of colour and fur
Cashmere has a soft flowy blonde coat
Katniss wonders if they are the tributes or not and if they are, do they remember? but it isn't for sure if it's just mutt-ations (which is what they are called when no name. Jaber Jay's, mocking Jay's and tracker jackers are all mutt-ations) or really the dead tributes.
Personally I don't think it is as katniss states in the book after the bloodbath but before the first canons, wondering if peetas body's already been shipped home
I think it's more creepy this way in the psychological way. Which capitol and snow are great at
Now that would really justify that vacant traumatised face both Katniss and Peeta have at the end of the movie more, if they added that.
@@RamblersInceven more in thebook, she couldn't mercy kill Cato right away as he was blocked by the cornucopia. The mutts tore at him while he screamed for hours before he was where she could hit him. And Peeta was in much worse shape too and nearly died while waiting for it to be over.

10- electricity
11- agriculture
12- coal
13- disintegrated after the war. But they provide nuclear power before

I wasn't crazy about the book of "Ballad", but I actually really liked the movie, and the music in it is especially good.

HayMitch was a past winner so that’s why he’s lowkey using alcohol to cope with his PTSD. But he was really good, he “won” and became a mentor!
Besides the training, one of the reason the out districts don't win as often is because they're all suffering from hunger and starvation most of the time, so even the little training time and good food they get they can't compare in strength to the more well fed tributes. Could also explain why Rue is so small! Not enough nutrients to grow
Makes sense.....although Thresh is also from the same district and he wasn't feeble. Then again age is a big difference.

Oh yeeaah. Great catch. I wonder why he's the only one without that extra colour splash? 🤔
Did you guys notice that the actor who plays Reacher is Cato in Hunger Games?
Oh wow. We didn't spot him in this movie.
This wasn't Reacher's actor Alan Ritchson; you'll see him in _Catching Fire_ instead. 😉
Hi, I know I'm a little late to the party, but I have a couple things to mention. 1st off, wrong Liam.😂 @ least u got the 1st half right.😊
Ok, 2nd, the book goes into much more detail about Panem which is the world the Hunger Games take place.
Batter late than never 😊
Ah ok. We got that wrong. There's only 12 left.
Yeh those mutts sounds crazier in the books
We have to check out Battle Royale at some point.

Yeah, Peta always loved Kat, he purposely burned the bread so she didn't die and was beat the hell out of by his mom, movie didn't show it. His mom was insanely abusive and evil. Poor sweet rue, her dad died for starting the riot in district 11
This was so fun to watch! Please watch the next one too
tim burton DID do alice in wonderland XD
Waiting for Catching Fire. Haha

The epilogue was perfect 🧡💚
Thanks for watching 😊
Oh, I didn't mean that she SHOULD smile, but poor Katniss had just been flung in hell masquerading as a gameshow.
