I hate how they downplayed the bread scene (and Peeta's characters in general) because it's quite important for Katniss. Her father had just died and her mother was deep in depression. She also wasn't of age yet to put her name in the games and be able to ask for more food, so they were literally dying of hunger. Peeta's mom is actually terrible and treats him badly. However, when he sees Katniss in the rain, he burns a very expensive bread that only peacemakers and people like that can buy just to be able to give it to her. For that, he got a beating and he went to school the next day all bruised up. That bread literally saved Katniss and her family and she got inspired to start hunting. From that day on, Peeta was for her like a symbol of hope. Peeta was being real when he said he liked Katniss, but he indeed was also playing the star-crossed lovers card. He's charming, good with people and managing social situations. In the books Katniss has her moments and is resourceful, ofc, but it's evident that Peeta and his charming ways are key to her success. You are one of the few that picked on the spot that Peeta wasn't really helping the professionals, and that made me so glad. The book is narrated from Katniss' POV and she thinks he is working with them. However, when she rewatches the games later, she discovers he wasnt. He wasnt even doing it for himself. He was activelly getting them away from her (like he recognized her traps, and pointed the professionals the other way). He says to "kill her later" to give her some time and spends the night next to the tree trunk to make sure she's fine and when he tells her to run is because Cato is still around, looking for her. He even goes against Cato so she can escape. That's how he gets that cut. From the begining, he was trying to make Katniss win 🥺🥺
@@chanbang378 I mean, it's easy to miss things when just watching a film never mind having to give entertaining commentary at the same time. But it was funny.
@@matejburic1388 God, y'all are a bunch of tools. He clearly just forgot that detail by then. Try doing a reaction yourself, I'm sure you won't fare much better. Everyone's a critic. 🙄
Haymitch is resentful because he had to endure the hunger games himself. The only way you win is by being the lone survivor out of a group of kids- that has to come with some PTSD and survivor's guilt, let alone the guilt for any actions you took. Then on top of that, he has to mentor following district 12 tributes that don't have a high success rate because of the careers (the ones that train for this)- so he has had to watch the system lead these kids to their death and is forced to play a part in it for the rest of his life. You aren't free once you survive the games- you become a pawn for the capital to use and if you don't comply they threaten everyone you care about. Another character you meet later in the series has a heartbreaking story about how the capital used him after he won. Effie is from the capital, so while she is there for it, she is more removed from the reality of it and more or less brainwashed by the capital's propaganda.
Not to mention that Haymitch's entire family was slaughtered by the Capitol because they saw his actions in the game and him winning as an act of rebellion. He's been battered and traumatized by the system so badly, it's no wonder he's an alcoholic.
Btw, the 3 finger salute is a sign of respect in district 12. The Capitol expected Katniss to kill Peeta at the end, for more drama I guess (I read the books many years ago) but she really was ready to die at the end with the berries, rather than let the Capitol win by forcing her to kill her partner. The berries in the bowl at the end were for the guy with the crazy beard (Seneca Crane, the game maker). He allowed Katniss to show them all up by defying the rules…. So he was basically made to eat the berries to die for his actions.
In the books, it's stated that Katniss's first shot in her demonstration went off center because she was used to using an old, warped wooden bow and handmade arrows, and had to account for the unreliability of her shoddy weaponry, meaning that when she was using the fancy metal bow and arrows she wasnt used to how accurate they were and had to readjust. It's something that really doesn't matter in the long term, but is one of those very tiny details that is lost because the movies aren't told from Katniss's perspective and thus we don't get her internal monologue to help explain a lot of the minutiae.
@@iambored2094Even a pro archer could have trouble hitting a target on the first shot with an unfamiliar bow. It’s a testament to her skill how quickly she adjusted to a metal bow and arrows.
One thing that seems to get lost from the books is katniss’ complete lack of interest in having a relationship with a boy. She has focus solely on providing for her family since she was 11 yo. She is completely in survivor mode. Gale is her hunting partner and good friend. To her that’s it. In the book, she comments on all the girls at school that are interested in Gale. Her only concern is about the possibility of losing her hunting partner. Gale’s father died in the same mining accident katniss’ father died in and they met in the woods while hunting for their families. So many people focus on the Love Triangle. From katniss’ perspective there is no triangle.
Idk why the movie gives ppl the impression they’re anything more than friends. I saw the movies before reading the books and got no romantic feels until Katniss kissed Peeta. It’s obvious at that point Gale realized he wanted more than friendship but nothing beforehand- it’s so weird ppl automatically jump to teen love
@@Taewillsif I remember correctly, after the games, they had to pretend the Katniss and Gale were cousins because that was the story that was told by the capital which I think indicates they didn't want people to think there was any other man in her life ?
@@that.ll_do_pig yea I recall that too. Apparently in the future girls and boys / men & women cant be platonic friends either. I think it was Haymitch’s idea even tho Katniss told him they were just friends (before Gale ruined it by changing their dynamic lol).
@@KaizerHiwatari According to her editor, Suzanne Collins intended to focus both the books & movies on the war. Regardless of her, ( or the studio’s) intention, ppl make assumptions based on their own ideology. There was absolutely nothing romantic about Gale & Katniss’ interactions in this movie. Just the fact that he’s male presenting and she’s female presenting. To some, that’s an automatic link, when for many of us irl that’s not the case.
Guys thank you so much for watching! *FOR ANYONE WONDERING WHY SOUND CUTS OUT AT CERTAIN PARTS, IT'S TO REMOVE MUSIC DUE TO COPYRIGHT!* Thanks for understanding
Fun fact, when katniss walks out of the evaluation, Effie is so stressed because the tributes aren’t supposed to leave that room until they are dismissed by the game makers/ judges up top. She mad disrespected them by just bowing and walking out😂
Katniss missed her first shot in front of the judges because she had been deliberately told by Haymitch not to reveal her talents with a bow to the other tributes, to give her an advantage. When she shoots that bow in front of the game makers, that is the first time she has ever shot with that bow. It is different than the bow she has at home, and has to be adjusted to to accommodate for that difference. Her first shot missed, but her second shot was spot on. It took her one practice shot to learn to shoot perfectly with a bow she has never used. This speaks to incredible talent, but the game makers just saw her miss and wrote her off.
Regarding why Gale has his name in 42 times: your name is in once for each year you are eligible. One entry at 12, 2 at 13, etc. But if you are starving you can put your name in extra times in order to get food rations (they are called "tesserae" in this universe). Those entries are also multipled by the age of the child. Gale, for example, is 18 here. The oldest age eligible and he has put his name in several times for his mother and three siblings to get food rations. Katniss, likewise, put her name in to get rations for her mother and Prim. This system ensures that the poorest and least powerful families are generally the ones who are picked. But not always, as seen with Prim. The bowl of berries at the end was put there at President Snow (Donald Sutherland, RIP)'s behest. The Gamemaker (Crane) is locked in with the poison. Crane is looking at the Games like an entertainment event. He ordered Katniss and Peeta not to be killed to keep the audience happy. Snow uses it as a political tool, to crush desent. He is... unhappy with this outcome. It is the only time two people survived the Games. When they changed the rules back, they expected Katniss and Peeta to kill each other. They thought it would be a dramatic finale. I expect Snow did not believe Katniss's "love" and thought she would turn on him. Though we only get Katniss' POV in the books.
My biggest pet peeve with the movie series adaption is how Peeta is portrayed. Not bad, necessarily. Just didn’t present him fully. Yes, he is charismatic, but he is also socially intelligent. He was a big part of of getting Haymitch to engage so much with them, he is liked by everyone, pin points people’s goals and intentions quickly, etc. he is a natural public speaker. He is also incredibly strong, both physically and mentally. In the books, Peeta actually loses his leg that was cut so bad in this movie - a cut he got from Cato. But he still goes about life kindly and normally. He did throw the bread to her when she was on the brink of starvation. The book makes it clear he burned it on purpose so that he would be able to give it to her… and took a beating from his physically ab*side mom for it. He is truly selfless when it comes to Katniss. Subscribed for your reactions to the rest of the series. Believe me - there is plenty of material. The scope of this world simply gets bigger and more detailed. Catching Fire is my favorite of all the movies.
Yeah I agree, it’s getting better now but the movies are the reason that people used to see peeta as ‘weak and useless’ for years and it sucks because he’s not. Like you said, it just doesn’t present him fully. I feel like the movies, especially the first one not only took away a lot of his strengths but also like 80% of his personality it just… gone.
@@philliplynx7877 i think the other person is aware of that and just didn't want to spoil the next movie(s). you just did exactly that, so i really hope jake won't read this. i mean sure, he already looked it up and got the confirmation that there are 13 districts, but marshall's comment alone would've thrown him off the scent
Haymitch is from district 12, hes a former winner. He has PTSD over it. Once you win your a mentor, hes gone years and years and years of watching kids die. So He stopped forming attachments and caring. But Katniss woke something up inside him I think. I think he also saw, this girl might just be able to do ot
@@ptitepeluche05 True, but until the rule change he could only hope to get one of them out alive, and he felt Katniss had the better chance, so he put his energy into helping her the most
39:11 This is how Katniss describes it in the book: “It is an old and rarely used gesture of our district, occasionally seen at funerals. It means thanks, it means admiration, it means goodbye to someone you love.” It’s something exclusive to District 12, and no one else would’ve seen it before Katniss volunteered. So the people of 11 doing it is a pretty big deal.
Things that are in The Hunger Game book but were never mentioned in the movie; Each district specializes in certain vocations. For example, District 12, where Katniss comes from, is a mining district. Her father died in a mining accent and as a result her mother goes into a severe massive clinical depression where she no longer could take care of her daughters and herself. That is why Katniss was starving and Peeta threw the bread to her. When a person wins the Hunger Games that person not only wins a lot of money but they win a huge expensive house (located in the Victor's village in their district) and they also win food for their entire district. Prior to Katniss and Peeta, Haymitch was the only living winner of district 12. It was very rare for anyone from district 12 to win the Hunger Games. There is a lot more, but I won't say it so as not to spoil anything for the next Hunger Games movie that you will be watching.
I agree, to an extend, but ... !!! You can not put a book into an film with all things in. It would be too long and only be interessting to the readers of the book. So no money out of the film. For example some Films .... 1.) The Ring Trilogie of JRR Tolkins books. There are so many things left out or falsified, that the readers of the booksomtimes shke their heads (Tom Bombadil, Glorfindel (not Eowin) at the Ford, and other minor things) which had to be excluded to not prolong the film and made it to "boring" 2.) Dune (the new Films). The Dune Book Series is very "political" and "social" burdend. With many passages which explains the Bene Gesserit, The Guild, The Ixian, the Mentat, the Butlers Djihad, ... If you put all this into the Films they will be about 6 times longer and very boring to the "normal" movie looking People, so no Income. 3.) Ready Player One Here is the main line of the book and the movie the same, but for example, all of the Quest (except of the last one) are completly different. First (in Movie) is a Race, in Book it is an D&D Adventure with an very old Arcadegame at the end. And then he has to go through the Wargames Film. Second (in the book) you have to solve Zork 1 (an ancient Text-Adventure). After this he has togo to the Cooparate Building of Blade Runner an beat an Beat em up Arcade Game. etc .. To long for an entertainmaint movie and to booring for most people. Please do not understand me in a wrong way, I loved all the movies (and have read all the books). I can see the books and the movies as different entities of of the narration. For me the books gives me more understnding in the whole universe and the movies are exellent entertainment for 2 to 6 hours. I do not want to miss any of them.
12-year-olds enter their name once, 13-year-olds 2 times, and so on... so by the time you're 18 your name will be there 7x... but there's a catch, if you're poor and you want more food for your family, you can get a year's ration of food for one person called tesserae and have your name entered one more time for each person's ration--and it's cumulative--At 16 Katniss has her name entered 20x. 5x for the regular entries and 15x for the extra food she's taken for the last 5 years for her family of 3. It's a way to keep the classes separate, and resenting each other. It shows in the book in how Gale treats one of the other kids who comes from a well-to-do family (or as well-to-do as there can be in District 12) and only had her name entered 5x at 16, while at 18 Gale has his name entered 40-something times due to having to take out tesserae for his large family for the last 7 years. P.S.: Her mom can't volunteer, she's over 18 and the only pick ages 12 to 18.
I'd like to mention, everyone is watching the games not because they want to, but because theyre required to by law. Also, there has never been more than one victor, thats what made Katniss and Peeta threats. She broke the rules by pulling out those berries. And if a scrawny little girl from the poorest district can do it, whats stopping everyone else? You are absolutely right about the social commentary. All of the parallels you saw were very much accurate and exactly what Suzanne Collins (the author) was going for.
There’s so much subtext in this movie that is fleshed out in the books. The biggest one is the Avoxes (you see one in the background of the dinner scene before the Games. She’s wearing a funky cage thing on her face). When someone goes against the Capitol in some way, they get their tongue removed and are made to be servants. Also, in District 12, there are two different neighborhoods of sorts: the Merchants and the Seam. The Merchants are more fair complected and run shops and are a bit more well off. This is where Katniss’ mom is originally from as well as where Peeta is from. The Seam is where Katniss is from. They are significantly poorer. No running water, no electricity, barely have food. Katniss sells her wares on the black market to survive. Hope this helps!
Katniss's mother is still reeling from her husband being killed in a mining accident. Which is why she sort of shut down, and Katniss had to take over being the head of the family. And Haymitch is a mess because he's the only winner District 12 has produced. So every year since he won he's had to mentor two teenagers from his District, and get to know them, and watch them die. Year after year.
There actually have been 2 more victors aside from Haymitch, Katniss and Peeta, but one was Lucy Gray Baird and her games were wiped from history and the other was unnamed and died long before the events of the original trilogy
I think the whole plan from Crane was to make the most dramatic narrative for the games. Having lovers make it to the end and then having to sacrifice each other is basically the "juiciest" outcome. So they made the rule intending to reverse it. And the berries were from the President as punishment for the plan backfiring.
I would also say that at this point in time the majority of people both in the districts and the Capitol see the hunger games as but a mere spectator event, like we do in today's society with reality tv shows. Ceneca Crane is a new game maker and inexperienced. I also think he didn't really see the games as some kind of fear and control weapon the same way Snow does. So the fact that he stopped the games when Katniss and Peeta decided to commit suicide shows that he was Ill-prepared for such a defying act. He stopped it because he probably still thinks of the games as some kind of narrative driven reality show. Obviously Snow was absolutely displeased and punished the game maker for his naivety and weakness... But had to let the two Victor's play out their love story because the Capitol loved them and if Snow killed them off then perhaps even the Capitol citizens may have caused some chaos as well.
25:21 : the Hunger Games always start with what's called a bloodbath, where 8 to 12 tributes die within minutes, mostly because of the Careers. 32:23 : the Capitol develops all kinds of genetic abominations. They used it during the war, including those wasps, and left the nests except near the Capitol after the war ended (as another means to remind the districts the Capitol is all-powerful), but they use and create news ones adding to old ones in the Games for fun.
They never intended to let both Peeta and Katniss live. They wanted to create a situation where one of them turned on the other because it shatters the view of them as good people that might inspire rebellion. They want everyone in the districts to remain somewhat distrustful and seeing each other as potential rivals so they won't band together and go against the Capitol.
After you finish the movies, I highly recommend the books or audiobooks. Because all of the books are in first person from Katniss's perspective, there are some cool things they added in the movies that we couldn't see in the books (like Haymitch going to Seneca Crane to try and convince him to lean into the romance and let them both live. We're with Katniss the whole time in the book so that just comes out of nowhere and Katniss reasons in her mind that the love story must be playing well with the audience), but that also meant we lost a ton of Katniss's thoughts. Like the reason that she was so cold towards Peeta at the beginning isn't super clear. First, they do a terrible job of showing what happened between them (they cut the first flashback off at a point that makes it seem like he refused to help her) but then even when we eventually see what did happen, the movies haven't adequately shown how much she haaaaaaates to owe people. She was going into a fight to the death that she couldn't afford to lose and she would be going up against someone she owed her life to. The books just have a ton more and they're not super long so they're quick to get through and I think you'd really enjoy them
8:30 Well, she gave Prim the pin to “protect her, and as long as she has it, nothing bad will happen to her” and now Prim isn’t going to the Hunger Games despite being picked, so is it bad luck?
To me Katniss saw Peeta’a confession as declaring her his weakness maybe. So by admitting that he has a crush on another tribute, those freakish carriers would target her to make him suffer. Just as when someone declares their partner as their weakness when someone is after them. I feel like she may have taken that as this.
"I'm really hoping this is a happy go lucky, inspirational type of story, not sad or emotional in any way. Kinda feeling that might not be the case"... Oh you sweet, sweet summer child 😆
all children hide their fear differently. katniss doesnt allow herself to get attached until she sees Prim in Rue. Rue literally hides in trees, peta downplays his strengths, thresh protects others but left himself vulnerable, glimmer and marvel acts haughty, clove and cato were threatening but just as afraid, clove screamed for cato but cato never came because he was afraid of certain dth when thresh and katniss in close proximity. the tributes are all children trying to win to earn money to survive and/or see their families again. katniss saw that when cato was being attacked by the dogs and he begged please. No one much more the tributes want to be in the hunger games, but the moment it begins the youth are herded like cattle to be selected, allowed to say goodbye or receive well-wishes from their loved ones. but they are just children, 12-18 is a child. katniss is the protag so we obviously root for her but we should pity the tributes that were named, unnamed, and especially pity those that were blinded by the environment they were raised in, they didnt have a choice which district they were born into.
They mess with the rules for no other reason than because they can. The whole point of the Hunger Games is to exert power on the districts. They do it all because they can, because it reminds the districts that they are in control. They wanted to give them the hope they could win together to drive them together to play on the romance, but they changed to rules back for the drama of forcing them to kill each other, but at the end of the day it's all because they have total control and it reminds everyone that they can do whatever they want with their lives.
There’s a theory that Foxface (the redheaded girl) purposefully ate the berries. During the earlier training montage, you see her practicing matching plant types, sort of alluding to the fact that she’s knowledgeable about plants. If that was the case then she would most likely have recognized a poisonous plant in their environment. Since there was only Cato and Katniss and Peeta left besides herself, the theory is that she knew she would meet a horrible end having to go up against one of them and took control of her fate by eating the berries and taking her life. I haven’t read the books in at least a decade so I’m not sure if this is actually how the stories go, but as far as a movie theory goes, it’s one of my favorites 🙏🏼😔
No, in the books it's clear she was starving and thought the berries were safe because Peeta was gathering them. Those berries only grew in District 12 so not in Foxface's district so she didn't know about them. Besides, it makes absolutely no sense to try to survive all this time to just give up when you only have 3 opponents left.
@@ptitepeluche05yeah book foxface and movie fox face are very different, in the books shes very fox like in terms of mostlu picking off other tributes because she was so stealthy
In the books when Katniss got the score of 11 she wasn't happy about it. Because in her eyes the capitol put "a target on her back". Of course the strongest or best trained tributes would go after those with a higher score to eliminate the threat if you know what I mean... And the game makers clearly wanted Katniss dead for being ballsy, I guess. Shooting the apple out of that pigs mouth was pretty darn impressive but also defiant.
The writing of the Hunger Games books was inspired because one day the author was watching TV and was switching channels back and forth between a competitive reality TV show and the war in Afghanistan. At one point, what she was watching got so blurred in her head that she couldn't tell the difference between the programs. I might be dead wrong, but from my understanding, the reality TV show that the author was watching was Survivor: Cook Islands. The very same exact Survivor season my brother, Billy Garcia, was a contestant on back in 2006. 📺👀🤔➡️📝📚
When Katniss was tripping on wasp's venom, Peeta fought Cato to allow her to get away. Otherwise Cato would have killed her. That's how Peeta got his leg injury. Cato cut him to the bone with his sword.
R.I.P Donald Sutherland. This series are based on books, yes. And about Katniss relationship with Peeta, she was always aware of him like she never was of anyone since the bread incident, so she never really was indifferent, but you're not wrong she wasn't in love with him.
Fun fact J Law was told she had to drop weight for the movie to look more starved but ultimately refused as it would send the wrong message to young girls. She said she was thin enough as it was
I think the switch from both Katness and Peta Bread could be winners, to only one can survive was about controling the Districts. It had very little to do with the champions. They wanted the people to see that even "lovers" will turn on each other when pushed to do so. The message that would send is "Don't trust each other. Don't trust your community. Don't trust your friends and family" The more suspicious and isolated the people are, the less likely they'll be able to revolt against the capital.
The reason they did the "two can survive" just to take it away was to prove a point. People were believing them to be in love which could incite rebellion and too much hope. What better way to soil that then to make them kill each other? In love, how, when one killed the other to survive, it would've shown it as being just a strategy to survive which would inspire nobody.
The 3 finger thing is the mocking bird sign if I remember right, it's a sign of deep deep respect and honor and love. At the same time it's a giant middle finger to the capital.
So happy to see you delving into this story. Without giving any spoilers here is some background information that might help give you a better idea of what is going on in this story, especially if you choose to continue watching the films. *** *This is a really long post.* *** The Hunger Games is set in a future dystopian country essentially made up of the United States and a little bit of Canada after an apocalypse, which caused the world's landmasses to change shape while the sea levels began to rise. Though it was not directly stated, there was an insinuation that the Earth fell victim to issues like climate change, overpopulation, and catastrophic wars. Following the destruction, a new country called *Panem* was formed and the location of The Hunger Games was brought to life. Panem is comprised of the Capitol, where the games are fought, and the other 13 districts that surround it. The closer to the Capitol, the more money the districts have, so Katniss, as well as all of District 12 are very poor. Each district is in charge of crafting, supplying, and maintaining a particular resource for all of Panem, as follows: District 1 = Luxury Items District 2 = Masonry and Defense District 3 = General Electronics District 4 = Fishing District 5 = Power (Electricity) District 6 = Transportation District 7 = Lumber District 8 = Textiles District 9 = Grain District 10 = Livestock District 11 = Agriculture District 12 = Coal Mining. District 13 = Nuclear Weaponry (Before the start of the series, this District was obliterated by the Capitol for going against them.) While in the story it is said that this annual competition is a way to remember the past so a war doesn’t happen again, the truth is much darker. The true purpose of the Hunger Games is to provide entertainment for the Capitol as well as to remind the districts of the Capitol's power. The Games also show that the Capitol has a lack of remorse or forgiveness for the failed rebellion of the current competitors' ancestors. The reason they are held using children ages 12-18 is that it allows the Capitol to maintain the narrative that even the most innocent people in Panem are corruptible (i.e. willing to kill). Each child in the age range at the time of the "Reaping" is entered into the lottery drawing one time for each year they are eligible (i.e. 1 entry at 12, 2 entries at 13, 3 entries at 14, etc.) The tessera is a system in which children who are eligible for the Games may submit their name to the lottery extra times in exchange for a year's supply of food and oil for one person, collected on a monthly basis. The child could also claim further tesserae for as many members of their family as needed. Depending on the family and their particular circumstances, the tesserae may or may not have been enough to live on, and alternate sources of food - sometimes acquired illegally - may also have needed to be pursued. This is why in this first Hunger Games film Gale says he is in there 42 times; he is trying to keep his family alive and fed. They don't say it in the movie, but Katniss is also in the lottery more times for doing the same thing since she had been taking tesserae for herself, her sister, and her mother since she was 12.
It's explained better in the book, but 18:13 she missed her shot because the bowstring was much tighter than what she was used to. She only used home-made bows when she hunted, so her calibration for the bow was off.
When you said that you were hoping for a happy-go-lucky, and not sad kind of film, I was like, oh boy 😬😫 However, it is inspirational. HG's is one of my favourite series, even with the heavy and serious themes. It's got me through some tough times in life, and in some ways, I think a lot of the characters in this series are inspiring. Thank you for your reaction 😊
Watching the Games is mandatory for the District people. That's why Gale and Katniss's family are watching. Gale is her best friend, her hunting partner. They are not together. Gale is 18yo, Peeta and Katniss are 16yo. Peeta is a merchant meaning he probably never had to take tessarae meaning he only had his name 4 times in the bowl. The odds were not in Prim and Peeta's favors.
I've said this in the past, but it's always true: Donald Sutherland makes a really good villain as President Snow. It's kind of the same paradox with Imelda Staunton/Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter: a delightful actor playing such a vile, despicable character. Also....RIP Rue. She did not deserve the fate she was given.
You picked up on a lot of details and had some very good insights, but having watched your Harry Potter and LOTR series, I expected no less :) The reason they changed the rules at the end is as simple as it is abhorrent: every decision the Gamemaker makes is to drive the drama to the next level, regardless of how unfair and soulless. Star-crossed lovers unexpectedly winning is dramatic, but star-crossed lovers having to fight to the death? That's way more so. Something I like to point out to reactors about Cato and the careers is that even though they're vicious, ruthless killers. . . they were raised to be that way. They had the whole idea of "dying and killing for glory" drilled into their heads since birth. They've been brainwashed and trained to be what they are and, in that way, they're victims of the Capitol too.
Just like with HP, you’re one of the most observant reactors I’ve ever seen! So much fun to watch with you, Jake!! Can’t wait for Catching Fire (my fav of the series) 🤩🤩
I do my best d: I like to think i'm better at picking up the characters emotion/thoughts than I am at plot related details, as my adhd likes to focus on faces and analyzing them. But appreciate your time/engagement all the same :)
Please!!!! Don’t wait to long to watch the next one! It really takes away from how you’ll see/remember/react to movies like these! You’ll be glad you did! And so will I! 😂 much love from Lake Cumberland Kentucky ❤
One thing the games do is pit districts against each other. There is no communication between districts. The only interactions they have is when they kill each other in the games. They sometimes form alliances, but there is only one winner. When Katness had a little tribute to Rue, that was unheard of. She showed care, love, respect for someone from a sifferent district. In the book, before the fighting, Rue's district sent bread to Katness in thanks. Unheard of. Even that bread was expensive and they still had a kid alive to send to if they chose. But they chose her. Then, when he saved her and spared her life. Also unprecedented. He even took Cato's bag so Cato would chase him. So many little rebellions even before the end. The Capitol people are oblivious and love her. President Snow sees her as a threat.
26:59 There used to be 13 Districts, before the uprising. Katniss briefly thinks about this in the first book, but it’s not part of any dialogue. She basically just notes that 13 was destroyed before the Hunger Games became a thing, so there’s only ever been 12 districts in the Games.
You’re correct in that this series was inspired by real events. 1.) Suzanne Collins (the author) was flipping through channels one day and there was a channel talking about the iraq war and the next was a reality show. She said the ideas fused together in an unsettling way. 2) She was also inspired by Ancient Rome and their infamous gladiator games. I really think you will enjoy this series. Can’t wait to see the rest!
Amazing how you got so much right and understood the movie so well. Peeta was always protecting her. Everything was him trying to make sure she survived. His feelings were genuine, hers were to keep them alive. They were little when he had a crush on her, they just make them look older here in the bread scene. He actually purposely burnt the bread and got a beating from his mom so he could give it to her. Sweetest heart of any character in books I’ve ever read. She on the other hand only ever thought of survival here and at home. Gale was never more then a friend in her eyes. With Peeta she does start to develop feelings of caring about him because he’s so genuinely kind.
It is worth mentioning that Cato is still a child he was raised in a district that honored victory in the games heavily and Katniss shooting him at the end is a mercy because she realizes that he is just another victim in the games. Even if he is there enemy in the arena he’s another district citizen and he’s trying to survivez
This is the most intelligent and intuitive reaction I’ve ever seen to this movie. You understood the subtext and implications perfectly. I’d absolutely believe it if you said you’d seen the movie before or read the books. Well done!
BTW, the Beefy Dogs at the end are in the books genetically adaptzed dogs to the fallen Tributes.. Katnnis get aware when she sees the dog formed after the District 11 girl and some others out of the "prestige" districts.
45:46 in the books (and I think I’m a deleted scene) after Rue’s death, Katniss receives a small loaf of bread in a sponsor parachute from District 11. The entire District pooled their money together to buy her the bread to show their thanks for Rue. It was one of my favorite moments in the book, and the first time a District sponsored an item to a tribute not from their own District.
The male tribute Peeta is played by Josh Hutcherson who had his first smaller parts when he was about 10 years old. So it is quite possible that you saw him as a child actor. Most people have usually seen Bridge to Terabithia, Zathura or the Brendan Fraser movie Journey to the Center of the Earth (based on the Jule Verne novel of the same name)... sometimes the Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson movie Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (sequel and based on another novel by Jules Verne). Zathura is a movie that I loved not only for the fact that it is based on a novel by Chris Van Allsburg as is the movie Jumanji. I would think that you might like both these movies but then I would start with Jumanji for no other reason than than it was produced before Zathura.
You know what is kinda weird... while writing that comment, I thought that Hutcherson was also in Race to Witch Mountain alongside Dwayne Johnson... but that was actually then child actor Alexander Ludwig who plays Cato here.
The number of times your name is in the bowl increases with every year from 12 to 18 (12 yos have their name in once, 13 twice, etc.). But there's also a system they don't explain in the movies called "tesserae" where you can get a years worth of flour, grain, and oil for an additional "entry." Gale is 17, so his name was in 6 times, and he has a mother and four brothers. He didn't want his brothers to put their name in more times, so he took the tessarae deal for himself, his mother, and his four brothers. So he has 6 as a base + 6 "entries" * 6 tessarae deals, so his name is in there 42 times total. Katniss did the same thing with Prim, and took tessarae for herself, Prim, and her mom. Since she's 16, her name is in 5 times + 5 "entries" * 3 tessarae, so her name was in there 20 times. Prim's was only in once.
To answer your question, Gale has his name in so many times because once you turn 12, you can put your name into the reaping for extra rations. If I remember right (and I could be off), each year you can put your name in once for everyone in your family, earning rations for each time you do it. Gale had a lot of younger siblings, so could put his name in something like 6 times a year. Between that and his hunting, he kept his family alive. Katniss did it too in the book, but I think could only put her name in 2 extra times per year, for Prim and her mom. It adds up because you don't start fresh every year. If you put your name in say 6 times a year, at 13, your name is in there 12 times, at 14 it's in there 18 times, and so on.
about the bread scene because they absolutely butchered it here, peeta and katniss are both 11 when that happens in the books, you can only pull tessary when you turn 12, her father had died a year prior if i remember correctly and ahe hadnt been able to hunt without him out of fear because it was usually him the took her out to the woods which are off limits to the citizens of district 12 and its punishable by death to be caught leaving or hunting (although the peace keepers also buy what she hunts in the books because nobody really cares about 12) so shed been trying to sell prims old clothes to get money to buy food for her family that was starving and she'd basically collapsed and resigned herself to death after trying to go through the bakery trash can to try and find anything to bring home and while she was sitting under the tree in the bakerys back yard she saw peeta who came out with burnt bread being hit by his mom who was angry he messed up a loaf and told him to throw it to the pigs but he waited for his mom to leave and then threw the loaf to her and that gave her enough hope to survive, she started hunting and gathering on her own after that when she saw the first dandelion of the year while walking back from school (dandelions are edible) and she now kinda associates that flower with the hope peeta gave her to survive
President Snow warned the gamemaster about giving the districts too much hope. Having two victors was too hopeful. But Katniss may have realized, that having no victors was even worse. But the gamemaster had to pay for his back-to-back screwups. Hence the bowl full of berries in a locked room.
They wanted Katniss and Peeta to have a drama-filled, tearful, terrible ending to their romance where they were forced to murder each other on live television. If they did as they were told, the gamemaker made his boss happy, there would be one winner and it would have made damn good television.
Im sure someone already told you the meaning of the three finger sign, but theres this deleted scene following Rue's death that I will never forgive them for deleting it haha Katniss gets a sponsor gift when she was mourning her death, and it was a small bread with a message "with gratitude from the people of District 11". This is such a meaningful scene as its the first time ever a District sends a gift to a Tribute from another District. Its the beginning of the spark for the revolution.
The reason they changed the tiles at the end was to try and restrain the amount of hope. Showing the districts that are poorer that they still have control and sacrifices need to be made to survive. Also district 13 isn’t part of the games as the capital wiped it off the map after they rebelled again.
51:49 The purpose for change in the rules the first time was to distract the people in the districts from Rue’s death and the rebellion that followed in District 11. Katniss’ heartfelt tears & tribute to Rue with the flowers and 3-finger salute resonated with people across the districts - people who usually sent their kids to fight one another and saw each other as rivals. By bringing the love story back into focus, it was a distraction. Keep in mind that nothing is fair with the Capitol. They can change rules however and whenever they want. Katniss called their bluff with the berries at the end. As Peeta said, they “needed their victor,” so Seneca Crane, the game maker with the facial hair stopped them and let them both win. He paid for that with his life… Snow’s touch with the poison berries to point out his fatal error.
They were never going to allow Katniss and Peeta to win. At the end of the day, this is a show, so they play every angle they can to make it entertaining. Their love story was another angle. And them changing the rules at the end was so that they could have a dramatic finale. They just didn’t expect it to backfire on them.
I don’t know if you looked it up or someone has said it by now, but that is the one and only Stanley Tucci. Every time I see him in a movie I say exactly what you just said. It takes me forever to figure it out.😂
So the bow/arrow thing where she was scored was the new equipment effect. She grew up shooting a wooden bow that her father made. That was a steel/titanium or something bow that she never practiced with before the little expo. She is a fantastic archer but even the best of any sports has to adjust to new equipment
the sign of the three: goodbye, admiration, and unity. District 13 was destroyed by the capital long ago. well...maybe Yes, there were books, they came first.
At this point in time there are only 12 districts. District 13 was bombed to the ground by the capital for revolting. The hand sign that they do is a District 12 custom they do at funerals, intended to honour and show respect for the dead. When they do it at the reaping, they're essentially showing respect for those who are about to die. The signal was specific to district 12, since communication between the districts is restricted (and the hunger games designed to alienate the districts from each other and create animosity) the first time the other districts see it is when Katniss does it in the games, honouring Rue. It's interpretation at that point starts to become associated with the rebellion. Though this video is a month old so you probably have more details in all that now 😁
Shut the front door Jake. I put my two weeks in at work to transition to another position, and then I got fired today. So 🥹 this is perfect timing. I can’t express to you how AMAZING hunger games is. I’m so excited for you.
Why did Katniss say Peeta made her look weak? Katniss associates love with weakness because after her father’s death her mother had a breakdown and Katniss was left to raise Prim alone.

@@JakeReactsYT i do admire the optimism 😂🫶🏻 spoiler: it only gets less happy go lucky from here on out babes
Damn u summarized everything I was thinking off 👏👏
OMG wow that scene was MUCH deeper than I thought... They didn't include like.. any of that lol. THANK YOU so much for letting me know!

@@RammerHammer THIS! He quite literally lost everyone he loved and cared about.
Thank you!! :D
Yes, I came here to say this. Bow hunters now have their bows set for their arm length, etc
@@iambored2094Even a pro archer could have trouble hitting a target on the first shot with an unfamiliar bow. It’s a testament to her skill how quickly she adjusted to a metal bow and arrows.
Appreciate that detail, thank you!
She also took several shots to adjust to the new bow before she was really good at it.
@walterrutherford8321 Ahh, yes, I am well aware that my whole family are licensed hunters. We all have experience in rifle and bow hunting.
@@Taewills Because the movies were marketed in exactly the way the author was intending to criticize: as a teen romance drama.

Fun fact, when katniss walks out of the evaluation, Effie is so stressed because the tributes aren’t supposed to leave that room until they are dismissed by the game makers/ judges up top. She mad disrespected them by just bowing and walking out😂
hahaha omg, love that piece of info thank you!
Ooooooh right right I forgot about that, thanks for mentioning that
Regarding why Gale has his name in 42 times: your name is in once for each year you are eligible.
President Snow was angry at the gamemaster, so he gave him the choice of dying of starvation in that room or eating the poisoned berries.
According to the book, District 13 had rebelled against the Capital sometime in the past. As a result, there was no longer a District 13.

When you put it that way... damn
Things that are in The Hunger Game book but were never mentioned in the movie;
Each district specializes in certain vocations.
There are so many things left out or falsified, that the readers of the booksomtimes shke their heads (Tom Bombadil, Glorfindel (not Eowin) at the Ford, and other minor things) which had to be excluded to not prolong the film and made it to "boring"
2.) Dune (the new Films).
3.) Ready Player One
Here is the main line of the book and the movie the same, but for example, all of the Quest (except of the last one) are completly different.
My favorite part is when Peeta signals at Cato's hand- because I NEVERRRR caught that until maybe my thousandth watch lol wow
I look really closely at stuff and that immediately caught my eye, loved that they put that in
I think the whole plan from Crane was to make the most dramatic narrative for the games. Having lovers make it to the end and then having to sacrifice each other is basically the "juiciest" outcome. So they made the rule intending to reverse it. And the berries were from the President as punishment for the plan backfiring.
That is the best theory I have ever heard on this question.
That is the best theory I have ever heard on this question.
1:50 -"I hope this is a happy go lucky kind of film...." AAAAAAAAAAAAH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HAH HAH HAH.....
I feel like she may have taken that as this.
lol “i’m looking up how many districts…13 districts ok.” welp 💀
The reason cato didn't come was he wasn't close enough. In the books he was running shouting her name. He was actually looking for peeta
@@ptitepeluche05 ahhhhh this totally makes sense! Thank you for that explanation!
@@nope19568 this is all just making me realize I reeeeally need to reread the books 🤣
@@nope19568they’re not very different at ALL they’re exactly the same??
📺👀🤔➡️📝📚
Omg that's a fascinating detail! AND also so very cool that your brother was on the show!
@@JakeReactsYT Thank you. 😊💖
When Katniss was tripping on wasp's venom, Peeta fought Cato to allow her to get away. Otherwise Cato would have killed her. That's how Peeta got his leg injury. Cato cut him to the bone with his sword.
"I hope this is a happy inspirational movie." 😂🤣
welp. lmao
She said she was thin enough as it was
Incredible, love that message
I think the switch from both Katness and Peta Bread could be winners, to only one can survive was about controling the Districts. It had very little to do with the champions. They wanted the people to see that even "lovers" will turn on each other when pushed to do so. The message that would send is "Don't trust each other. Don't trust your community. Don't trust your friends and family"
The more suspicious and isolated the people are, the less likely they'll be able to revolt against the capital.
LMFAOOOO “Fuck your odds and your favor” 😂😂 that had me rolling! 👏🏽
I SAID WHAT I SAID, hahaha. Glad you enjoyed :)
18:38 Also it was a new bow for her. She didn’t have a feel for the tension and whatnot.
There are only 12 districts now. You'll find out what happened to district 13 later.
*** *This is a really long post.* ***
The Hunger Games is set in a future dystopian country essentially made up of the United States and a little bit of Canada after an apocalypse, which caused the world's landmasses to change shape while the sea levels began to rise.
Each district is in charge of crafting, supplying, and maintaining a particular resource for all of Panem, as follows:
District 1 = Luxury Items
District 2 = Masonry and Defense
District 3 = General Electronics
District 4 = Fishing
District 5 = Power (Electricity)
District 6 = Transportation
District 7 = Lumber
District 8 = Textiles
District 9 = Grain
District 10 = Livestock
District 11 = Agriculture
District 12 = Coal Mining.
District 13 = Nuclear Weaponry (Before the start of the series, this District was obliterated by the Capitol for going against them.)
While in the story it is said that this annual competition is a way to remember the past so a war doesn’t happen again, the truth is much darker.
''The bees injected us with ayahuasca'' 🤣💀
also ''What's that guy's name, Kratom?'' jfc jake lmao
;) hahaha it just happens idk
“ what’s his name kratom?” Made me almost piss my pants
When you said that you were hoping for a happy-go-lucky, and not sad kind of film, I was like, oh boy 😬😫
However, it is inspirational.
30:44 so he ended up meeting the careers in the woods after they hunted down district 4 girl in the woods
I started watching you with the HP and I love your attention to detail, empathy and just how focused you are. It's a blast to watch with you.
That means a lot to me, thank you
The second movie is like basically everyone's favorite, would love to see your reaction to it!!
So excited to start this journey!! Can’t wait for you to see all the movies. Such a brilliant and amazing world. And your reactions are CHEF KISS!
Appreciate that very much! :D
Just like with HP, you’re one of the most observant reactors I’ve ever seen! So much fun to watch with you, Jake!! Can’t wait for Catching Fire (my fav of the series) 🤩🤩
Really? He missed SO much 😂 and the "observations" he had were literally told to him in the movie moments before 😂
Okay.. 🙄👍🏻
Yeah HP was also the one which made me follow Jake because he is very perceptive.
@@adventuresinlaurenlandthe part where he asked who put the berries in the bowl ..🤦🏽♀️

loved your reaction to this! you’re good at picking stuff up. sometimes reactors watch this and miss like, most of what’s happening.
Please!!!! Don’t wait to long to watch the next one! It really takes away from how you’ll see/remember/react to movies like these! You’ll be glad you did! And so will I! 😂 much love from Lake Cumberland Kentucky ❤
Already reacted to the 2nd, the edited version will be up soon :)
Please continue with this series! It just gets better!
I definitely will!
You're in for an emotional roller-coaster 😂 excited to be on this journey with you
Knowing how observant you are I have no doubt this series will be a blast to watch!
Suzanne Collins (the author of this series) actually wrote this based on the iraq war, so its definitely got themes of war and oppression!
It is worth mentioning that Cato is still a child he was raised in a district that honored victory in the games heavily and Katniss shooting him at the end is a mercy because she realizes that he is just another victim in the games. Even if he is there enemy in the arena he’s another district citizen and he’s trying to survivez
I truly enjoyed watching you experience this movie for the first time! I hope you'll continue the series, it'll be so worth it 🙏🏼
Appreciate that! Definitely going to continue :D
There’s only 12th districts. The 13th was destroyed during the uprising that mention on the prop video shown at the reaping.
Great reaction! You caught so many details. 😊
I laughed so hard over your comment about Peeta’s cake decorating skills! 🎂
Oh wow that's amazing
I'm pretty sure I saw zathura as a kid! I remember something like jumanji, but in space or something lol! Loved that movie
@@JakeReactsYT I thought you might do
Katniss misses the shot because her bow is wood and the one in the capitol is metal and they are very different to shoot
caesar asks seneca what his signature for the games, the editing hard cuts to the screams of a little girl from a impoverished township
Thank you!
about the bread scene because they absolutely butchered it here, peeta and katniss are both 11 when that happens in the books, you can only pull tessary when you turn 12, her father had died a year prior if i remember correctly and ahe hadnt been able to hunt without him out of fear because it was usually him the took her out to the woods which are off limits to the citizens of district 12 and its punishable by death to be caught leaving or hunting (although the peace keepers also buy what she hunts in the books because nobody really cares about 12) so shed been trying to sell prims old clothes to get money to buy food for her family that was starving and she'd basically collapsed and resigned herself to death after trying to go through the bakery trash can to try and find anything to bring home and while she was sitting under the tree in the bakerys back yard she saw peeta who came out with burnt bread being hit by his mom who was angry he messed up a loaf and told him to throw it to the pigs but he waited for his mom to leave and then threw the loaf to her and that gave her enough hope to survive, she started hunting and gathering on her own after that when she saw the first dandelion of the year while walking back from school (dandelions are edible) and she now kinda associates that flower with the hope peeta gave her to survive
Excited for you to continue this series!
Peeta is by far one of my favorite characters. He balances Katniss so well and they really do provide for one another what the other is "lacking".
Just found your channel, loved your reaction! now im gonna go binge the harry potter ones 😂 cant wait for more videos!
Im sure someone already told you the meaning of the three finger sign, but theres this deleted scene following Rue's death that I will never forgive them for deleting it haha
Katniss gets a sponsor gift when she was mourning her death, and it was a small bread with a message "with gratitude from the people of District 11".
Though this video is a month old so you probably have more details in all that now 😁
They were playing mind games. They let them think they could both survive to play up the romance angle. Then they thought she would kill Peta.
Little fact, the director based the film techniques on the movie Schindler’s list so you comment at the reaping was pretty accurate
