CNC Hardwood Wall Art with the MPCNC

- 33"x13" piece of wall art made on a home built MPCNC with toolpaths generated in Fusion360. This took over 13 hours of time on the CNC, and in the future I would like to spend more time on the finishing pass to make it look smoother. The lines that show up on the surface are partially a product of the ball nose finishing bit that I use here not being perfectly round (it's from a router kit from the 70s). The wood was given to me and I am not sure exactly what it is, but I think it is a type of tropical hardwood, it was finished with linseed oil.
The model was purchased from en.pinkoi.com/store/arteon
Enjoy!

Very nice!
Quick tip -- If you run your finishing pass in the same direction as the wood grain, the tooling marks will be less visible.
I'm currently working on the final wiring and GRBL setup for my own MPCNC Primo. That was a beautiful and encouraging video to watch. Thanks!
I loved the way it looked before the final tool pass... Lots of lines, looked liked a nice diffuser 😄
That looks really nice. I'm amazed at the stuff we can make on our hobby CNCs!
A refined piece of music for a refined piece of art. Well done!
This same file has caught my eye on Etsy, it’s nice to see a video of actual progress of the cut. It looks great, I’m going to have to give it a go now!
I love this video!!!! I'm looking into building a MPCNC and this video boosted my confidence a lot!!! Love the video
Beautiful!
Bruh, it’s so beautiful 😻
excellent job
I have a box of opensource pieces I printed for a diy cnc..a long time ago. Those feet look familiar! Killer print! ...I need to finish building mine. Thanks & Cheers!
Where can i find step file for these kind of design ?
Great job
Cool video!
Nice work 😁
Good luck 👍
Cnc router ❤️
Smashing!!
lindo trabalho!
Very good compliment!!!!
By Marco from italy!!!
That is impressive.
Question how much money to get started with this kind of thing with out going all out, something that will get me 80% of the way there thanks.
This specific CNC is very inexpensive for what it gives you, the build kits with electronics only cost $350 but you need a 3D printer to make the majority of the parts which will run you a little bit more than that. In terms of other tools, I've had good luck finding mid-tier stuff on Craigslist, and about 1-2 grand will get you pretty far if you're not picky.
Thanks you for the hood information.
I believe the wood is sapele, in order to minimize the lines you may look into reducing the step size in your finishing pass. Good job and nice finish
Yeah since I made this video I've changed to a bit with a larger roundover radius and lowered the stepover which allows me to get virtually no tool marks. Thanks for the comment and I'm pretty sure you're right about the sapele
I made this model, it’s doubly nice to look at))
It's great! Thank you
nice
Cool! Thanks for sharing. I'm thinking mahogany
Sapele mahogany.
💪😎👍
Absolutely stunning, what kind of finish did you use on this? I can't wait to build one of these.
This was Maker Brand simple finish. It's a mixture of boiled linseed oil and beeswax I'm pretty sure
That was fantastic. Really great job. How long did it take for you to learn fusion 360?
Not long, I've gotten a lot better over time but some youtube videos got me started just fine. Don't be too intimidated by it!
Can I ask what size ball bit and step over you recommend using for something like this?
You have to choose a stepover based on the size of your bit so you don't get big tool marks in the piece. I had a small bit (1/4in diameter) and I set my stepover to probably around 1/16in but that led to lines as you can see in the video. Doing it again I would go with a 1/2in ball bit with something like a 1/16in stepover, but do some test cuts and see what works for you
Well done! What size MPCNC did you make? I like like the size you are working with
2ft by 3ft by 4in, I like it too, fits most of of the things I want to do
@@proungoods818 what router bit did you use for the second pass?
It was a 1/4in ball nose endmill but if I was to do it again I would use a 1/2in ball nose to make it smoother
Well done, I like it! What feeds/depth of cut used?
Roughing pass was adaptive clearing with 5mm stepdown and 2000mm/min, finishing pass was about 1700mm/min taking off ~1mm
@@proungoods818 I'm wondering what bit you used for finishing, and what was the stepover%? Thanks!
Really nice work!! How about doing a video on your CNC setup??
Sadly I've moved away from the shop so I can't anymore but let me know if you have any questions!
@@proungoods818 That's too bad, your work was really nice. Would you please point me in the direction of where you found your CNC plans? It is a very simple and nice design. Thanks Dave
Thanks! I got the model from a 3d designer called Arteon, you can look at all the designs here en.pinkoi.com/store/arteon
@@proungoods818 I'm sorry, I meant for the machine itself. The other info is great though too...
Ah, sorry about that. The cnc itself is the MPCNC Primo from V1Engineering, if you check out the V1Engineering site you'll find everything you need
How do you create those peaks and valleys in fusion 360? I’ve been really struggling trying to make a similar piece
I'm sorry, I did not model it myself, you can purchase the file at en.pinkoi.com/store/arteon
I have a lot of these 2.5d panels, only I use 2D milling, it is much faster, I use large ball and taper cutters.
Sounds nice, my machine couldn't handle cuts like that though
@@proungoods818 on mdf with a 120 degree milling cutter diameter of 40mm or a sphere with a diameter of 30mm - 35mm, I do 10mm in 1 pass, on a tree with a depth of 3mm in 1 pass, everything is real, such 3d waves (almost such) the relief is of course different from yours, but still it is also good, there are many varieties.
@@proungoods818 I looked at your relief, in the trailer and it can be made 2d) I use a large diameter cone cutter, but this is not a problem the cutter can be found without problems. I can give you a sample of vectors, processing "engraving on the middle line" I use Artcam and Corel if you have I will give you samples, just for interest.
@@cncwoodwork7935 добрый день! Не могли бы Вы поделиться со мной этими файлами?
@@user-ny9nx1lj9e наверно мог бы.
is it not faster and better to make such models using a vector and V-Bit?
This is a large piece so you would need about a 2 inch diameter v bit and a much more powerful cnc for that to work. The contours are also not all at the same angle so one v bit would not do it
Do you still have this file or know where to get it? I really like that design but can't find it and don't know how to recreate it
You can purchase the file at en.pinkoi.com/store/arteon
Amazing Video!! Whats the work size of your MPCNC?
2ft by 3ft by 4in
It has been awhile since you got your MPCNC going. What are its good and bad points for you?
Pros: cheap, you learn a lot in the process of building it and working out issues, and it can grow with your abilities up to a certain point
Cons: rigidity issues at medium and large scales limit how much you can push it in terms of material removal rate. You'll also only really be comfortable with wood unless you build a small one, I've done aluminum but I would need to put more time into it to be really comfortable with it
Let me know if you have any other questions
@@proungoods818 Thank you very much.
absolutely brand new at CNC and trying to absorb everything. Can you tell me what bits you used or if there other places I can learn about CNC tips?
In terms of bits, the best thing I've found is just standard two flute carbide upcut endmills, amazon or ebay ones are inexpensive and will last a long time in wood.
For CNC tips, I love the Carbide3D youtube channel with Winston Moy for introductory level content. They're well produced and informative.
@@proungoods818 awesome thanks so much !
If you reduce the stepover on the finishing pass it will reduce lines as well!
Yeah, don't think I mentioned it in the video but it turns out the lines were an artifact from the CNC, not from the stepover or bit
wooow nice project!
i am currently workin on a cnc machine that is made out of plywood ( you can watch it on my channel)
could you make the surface smoother with the cnc?
Yes the surface could be smoother with a finer finish stepover and a better bit
good job, could you share the fusion file?
I purchased the file on Etsy so I would feel bad sharing it but you can buy the same one or a similar one for 10 bucks at www.etsy.com/shop/ArteonCncModels
@@proungoods818 ok i understand that, no worries. still thanks and have a nice day :)
Friend, thank you for sharing, any tutorial to learn how to make that painting? I would appreciate it, thank you.
I did not model it myself, you can purchase the file at en.pinkoi.com/store/arteon
@@proungoods818 Thanks friend and congratulations for that work
What table circular he uses?
It is a Grizzly brand 3hp cabinet saw I purchased used
Looks great but I proffered the stepped effect rather than the smooth one.
Never seen this design/style before. I have been using Fusion 360 for a few years , would a link to RUclips video which would help start designing. Thanks
I did not create this model myself sorry, I purchased it from en.pinkoi.com/store/arteon
@@proungoods818 Thanks 👍
what are your feeds and speeds and tools ?
Roughing pass was adaptive clearing with 5mm stepdown and 2000mm/min with a 1/4in square end bit, finishing pass was about 1700mm/min taking off ~1mm with a 1/4 roundover bit
hello where can i buy , your fine milling bit ? :) 3:29
The one I use here is not very good, just look up any 1/4in ball nose router bit. Amazon or ebay work well for me
beautiful work. please watch those hoodie strings around the table saw...
Good point, thank you
What is the name of the glue?
Titebond 2 I think
could you have gotten it smoother on the CNC? Looks to be covered with tool marks.
Yeah when I made this I had a bad bit and it left lines. I didn't mind it that much since the texture was very uniform but since making this I've made others like it with a bigger ball nose and smaller stepover and they turned out quite smooth
@@proungoods818 cool, the lines are not offensive, i was just curious. I have seen other pieces similar to this one that were smooth. Didn't know if they did a bunch of hand sanding after machining or if you could get smooth results directly out of the machine. Very cool tech these days.
Anyone know the make and the model of the CNC machine?
It is an MPCNC Primo
How much does the MPCNC cost ? Did you track it?
Build kit is about $350, you use maybe $80 in filament if you print it yourself, and $60 for the low tier spindle, so about $500 USD total. The one I made here uses a better router and more rigid metal pipes which added some extra cost
@@proungoods818 You're using Dewalt, right? Does it ever run into problems? Because it runs quite a long time.
How long did it take you to build the MPCNC?
Thanks :)
I'm using the dewalt 618 which is much larger than the dewalt 660 that is the default. I've used both and neither have any problems running for a long time. I can go into detail about the pros and cons of each if you want.
Once I had all the parts printed it took me probably 4-6 hours to put it all together
@@proungoods818 please do share you experience with the routers. If you can of course.
Did you print it yourself? What printer do you have?
The cheap spindle (DW660) reccomended by the website is a little drywall cutout tool with fixed rpm at about 30,000 rpms. This works, but it's really noisy and the inability to control the rpms means you can't really adjust the chip load. The router I'm using is the DW618 which is a 2.25hp woodworking router that has rpm control. It's overpowered for the machine but I'm using it because I already had it and it works perfectly well. If I was getting a new router for my mpcnc I would get the DW611, which is a medium sized router with rpm control which I think would be perfect.
I did print all the parts myself, I have an Ender 5 pro
I am actually more interested in your MPCNC then the artpiece ;p.
Lmk if you have any questions
@@proungoods818 What is that MPCNC set you bought? I am curious how much that setup did cost, and what pieces you used other then the base MPCNC. I searched some around here on RUclips and came up with another guy that used 3d printed pieces for the frame that the MPCNC drives on.
The MPCNC frame is made only from 3d printed pieces and metal tubing, check out the v1engineering website and you can get the electronics kit for it. You can get a machine built for less than 500 USD. The upgrades I have for mine are a beefier router, really heavy duty pipes, and high infill on the 3d printer parts but those are not entirely nessecary.
@@proungoods818 Thanks for the website! Very useful, I want to make me one of those but everything I seen so far was always out of reach.
This is a good way to start! You get to learn a lot from putting one together yourself
I liked better after first cut

Nobody use sawblade cover in the US?.. I know too many people from woodworking without some fingers..
Mainly comes from prototype or 1 piece making. Time to setup safety equipment is more important then finger or eye? :(
I'm quite careful, but you're right I should get a cover. I got both the table saw and radial arm saw used and haven't purchased new ones
