Mid-Century Modern Lounge Chair - CNC Assisted Woodworking
The wood used here is cherry milled by my grandpa a couple years ago from a farm in Iowa.
Usually with curved shapes like this I have used the CNC to make templates and then used a template router bit to cut out the shapes and glue the parts together after that.
For this project I took a stab at gluing the rough shapes together and then cutting out the whole shape on the CNC. This worked quite well and gave the final product really clean curves and strong joints. The downsides of this method are that the parts can only be as large as my CNC bed, and slotting operations on the MPCNC can be a little stressful if I want to get them done quickly.
I also used the CNC to cut mortise joints for t...

CNC Electric Skateboard with the MPCNC
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.2 года назад
This skateboard is made from cherry, walnut, and some sort of tropical hardwood. The model that I made was based mostly off the size and shape of a Penny Nickel board, and all the CAD and CAM was done in Autodesk Fusion 360. The CNC machine is an inexpensive mostly printed CNC from V1Engineering, made primarily from 3d printed parts, you can find more information on it on the V1 website which I...

MPCNC 3D Mountain Carving - Denali

Carving of Denali with layers of oak and walnut. This took about 10 hours of total time on the cnc with most of the time in the finishing pass to get a very high resolution finish. The stl file that I imported to Fusion for tool path generation came from touchterrain, a website which I have linked below and have really enjoyed. You can get pretty decent resolution stl files of the terrain anywh...
CNC Hardwood Wall Art with the MPCNC
Просмотров 91 тыс.3 года назад
33"x13" piece of wall art made on a home built MPCNC with toolpaths generated in Fusion360. This took over 13 hours of time on the CNC, and in the future I would like to spend more time on the finishing pass to make it look smoother. The lines that show up on the surface are partially a product of the ball nose finishing bit that I use here not being perfectly round (it's from a router kit from...

For CNC tips, I love the Carbide3D youtube channel with Winston Moy for introductory level content. They're well produced and informative.

    • @proungoods818
      @proungoods818 2 года назад

      Pros: cheap, you learn a lot in the process of building it and working out issues, and it can grow with your abilities up to a certain point Cons: rigidity issues at medium and large scales limit how much you can push it in terms of material removal rate. You'll also only really be comfortable with wood unless you build a small one, I've done aluminum but I would need to put more time into it to be really comfortable with it

    • @proungoods818
      @proungoods818 2 года назад

      I figured out two ways to get around this. First you can leave the object as a mesh and just scale it in the mesh menu of fusion and then you can use that as the machining object. Alternatively you can simplify the mesh with a fusion tool and then convert it to a body to then machine. I personally go with keeping it as a mesh because it is easier on the computer.

    Can I ask what size ball bit and step over you recommend using for something like this?

    • @proungoods818
      @proungoods818 2 года назад

      You have to choose a stepover based on the size of your bit so you don't get big tool marks in the piece. I had a small bit (1/4in diameter) and I set my stepover to probably around 1/16in but that led to lines as you can see in the video. Doing it again I would go with a 1/2in ball bit with something like a 1/16in stepover, but do some test cuts and see what works for you
