  • The wood used here is cherry milled by my grandpa a couple years ago from a farm in Iowa.
Usually with curved shapes like this I have used the CNC to make templates and then used a template router bit to cut out the shapes and glue the parts together after that.
For this project I took a stab at gluing the rough shapes together and then cutting out the whole shape on the CNC. This worked quite well and gave the final product really clean curves and strong joints. The downsides of this method are that the parts can only be as large as my CNC bed, and slotting operations on the MPCNC can be a little stressful if I want to get them done quickly.
I also used the CNC to cut mortise joints for the stretchers, back, and seat. I hadn't really done this before either and it also worked quite well, the whole chair is super solid even though none of the wood is very thick. By using both a 1/4in endmill in the CNC and a 1/4in roundover bit on my router table, I was able to make the joint fit really nicely.
