- At Ahmedabad against West Indies in November 1983 Gavaskar playing his 96th match finally stood at the peak - the first time an Indian became the leading run getter in Test cricket. In the previous match at New Delhi he had equaled Bradman’s record of 29 hundreds also becoming the third after Boycott and Sobers to cross the 8000 run mark. But the feat of becoming the leading run getter in Test cricket was something very special and was duly hailed all over the cricketing world. In India of course he was elevated to the status of a cricketing god.

He played some fantastic strokes. Flashing off drives against Holding and Marshall. Great innings👏👏👏
Ahhhh..this test match was really the microcosm of the Windies tour to India. Kapil Dev's finest hour of bowling which netted him his best 9/83 in an innings (an effort that would forever endear him to my then 5 y.o. brother) and have the Windies staring at the barrel at 114/7 and see it all come undone by an unlucky no-ball (non) wicket of Michael Holding, who would then proceed to bat the game away with Marshall, adding 70 odd valuable runs, and then proceed to rip the Indian batting apart for 103 and leave my kid brother crying.
Vivid memories.
My sincere salute to our dear Sunil Gavaskarji for withstanding the terrible cannon attacks from the west indies and the Australians too. Don’t think, anyone from India has faced it. Thanks to the today’s media we can see his copy book strokes even today. And, also he faced them without a helmet. Watching his batting even today is a great enjoyment. May the God Bless him…
Facing such type of deadly bowling that too without helmet, reason why he is the best
Please upload 9 for 83 by Kapil the best bowling figures by an Indian for a long time. Few know how much Kapil single handedly led India's bowling attack for many years
It was the first test match at newly built Motera stadium in Ahemedabad, which i watched live all four days. Wonderful memories... Gawaskar surpassing boycott and kapil taking 9 wickets. Wicket was underpeparee and in the end India lost...Michael Holding was adjudged as man of the match and the prize he got was Hero-Puch moped!
Old memories die-hard 😊
Really in an attacking mood..Remember that was a test match assisted fast bowling...I think that was one of the greatest innings of Gavaskar in a pitch which helped fast bowlers too great extend...
Brilliant knock by Sunil Gavaskar!
Test match me itni bhid, itni toh netao ki bhid me bhi nhi Hoti. This is charismatic of Gavaskar Sir and their brilliant batting
The ball is never visible in this video but it hardly seemed to matter. Such was the aura around Gavaskar, the West Indian quicks and Test cricket played in front of 45,000 fans. Thanks for this rare treat!
Kapil bowled a superb spell and scalping the wickets after wicket= At one point of time he got 6/31 and ended that day 6/56. All the wickets fell to Kapil. Next day every one including me glued to TV in hope that Kapil took all the ten wickets but alas it couldn't happen
Undoubtedly gavaskar the best Indian batter, he faced lily, thomson, wi quatret, imran, Hadley etc. Without helmet it is tremendous effort. No Indian batter ever comes close of him, yes remembering Sachin , dravid.
Not only Indian even west Indian aur Australian batter didn't face as the gavasker faced the fierce bawler.
You should also load kanpur test, kolkata test dheli test and the oneday matches played at jamshedpur and Sri nagar to see some lovely and aggressive cricket from the west Indians.
Plz show Kapil's 9 for 83 from this test match also.
This was the closest to a win we came in this series. Early injury to Roger Binny didn't help, Paaji had to do all the bowling .In this Test Lloyd complimented Sunny for an outstanding catch to dismiss WI Skipper.
I remember watching this game live on DD. Gavaskar was complaining about the sight screen all the time during his innings of 90, but the boy was not listening i guess. and when he got dismissed and went back to pavilion, apparently he gave the sight screen boy a mouthful and scolded him like anything as per the hearsay.
Old is always gold you can't compare this west Indian team very good batting line up &very good fast bowler
.28 effortlessly timed , now a days we my call it an upper cut.
Brilliant stroke play studded with boundaries everywhere and Clive lloyd was forced to withdraw his close in fielders on seeing the mood of Sunny
It was a scintillating 90 by the little Master..infact it was even better than the Delhi test 120
Delhi test, he has 90 ball century
@@prabhakarraju7448 ji, I do agree. However, Delhi was relatively an easier pitch but Ahmedabad was a typical pacy pitch and you can see how Micheal Holding bowled in 2nd innings...But for Sunny, nobody could face such a hostile pace and swing bowling even in the first innings. Its unfortunate that we lost that test ..Kapil bowled magnificently .... With Sunny giving the momentum, others should have supported him to build a match winning first innings total... we failed to do so.. Sunny actually displayed that he can also play aggressively - like Viroo ....Again, one cannot just throw his bat against mighty west indian bowlers ....one needed skills and techinique which Sunny had in abundance...
Getting a glimpse of one of Sunny’s stroke filled knocks after 37 years. This effort went in vain with all the batsmen simply caving in after SMG dismissal. A strange coincidence that Sunny surpassed Boycott and became the first 10000 man here.
Tu chal mai Aya this was the situation in later years of his career also. gavaskar had always kept in his mind throughout his career and was sole army on whom india was dependent.others were occassional players who performed well without consistency
Revenge Series after surprise WC win of India.Kanpur, Ahmedabad and Calcutta tests were nightmare for hosts while Delhi, Bombay and Madras tests were dull draws. What stood out was Sunil's exemplary batting and Marshal's bowling.
ODI 5-0, Jamshedpur match Viv and Greendige, hitting centuries.
@@padsv Indian bowling other than Kapil Dev, was extremely weak. Hence,we lost so many Test and ODI matches.
Wow 0.28 he improvises to use the bounce to hoist the bowler over the slips......inventing a T 20 shot in 80s.
Remember clearly that series and test match as.listening commentary on radio as no television at home.I was in 9th and Diwali vacation was going on.Sidhu made debut in this test match.India played very well upto 3 innings of the test match and looked like will chase the total in 4th inning but all batsmen fell.like nine pins 😢.Gavaskar made just one in second inning .
No. He made 4 runs in the 2nd inning
WI 281(104.3)
Jeff Dujon 98(154)
Maninder Singh 4/19
IND 241(80.5)
Gavaskar 90
Wayne Daniel 5/39
WI 201(60.3)
Michael Holding 58
Kapil Dev 9/83
IND 103(47.1)
Anshuman Gaekwad 29
Michael Holding 4/30
West indies won by 138 runs
This Ahmedabad test is surely a classic
Excellent brother do you have any footage or news clip of 1982 Keith fletcher eng tour of india. The series is nowhere in you tube
Can see gavaskar annoyed on getting out. As per his book there was someone at the sightscreen that disturbed his concentration. He goes on to say the ball was good and may have got him out anyway. The chapter was called 'Clown at the sightscreen'
Plz upload kapil dev best bowlling in an innings 9/83 in this test match
Please up loud
India had no business losing this test.170-2 to 240 all out.Ravi,Sandeep,Kapil Binny and Kirti all flopped in unison with the bat. Unfortunately Binny was injured after bowling 6 overs. He was unplayable on that pitch with his banana swingers.
Before he got out, I remember Sunny requesting for the sight screen to be adjusted so that he can get a better view ..also, there was crowd movement right above the sight screen and he lost his concentration.
In runs n ruins it was called the clown on the sight screen. Later Gavaskar rightly felt that ball would have got him anyway, it was a beauty from holding.
Truly said brother,Sunil came to pavallion with angry mood in firing guestures on the person moving around screen.
@@user-pz2fe7en7c ji..
Yes...I remember this!!!
@@balajisethuraman8436 Thanks brother for responding in affirmative .🙏👍
I remember someone was shinning a reflective or mirror like object towards the batsman....
Wow all that we need is Kapil’s 9/83
But following sue Holding took 9 fer and wi won if my memory serves me right. Kapil took the ball from Binny and bowled, the ball was keeping low at that end.
Infact Binny drew the first blood lbw, on seeing the ball keeping low Kapil took it and got those wkts But in the 2nd inns Holding bowled from that end and destroyed Indian btg, Sunny was out lbw I think. Just its out of memory and not sure. May be 90% rt me.
This match Navjot sidhu debut first match
Wow
Holding will bowl an unplayable ball to get the wicket caught by Clive lloyd
in those kapil had no full suport from other indian players.otherwise india would have somany wins
I know this test.Alas our team lost it though we could win it.Kapil made it possible, but batsmen cheated .
4th day at teatime india lost this match as my memory
India won the toss and elected to field which cost them this Test as the wicket deteriorated

I saw this match. We had golden opportunity to squre in the series, after loosing at kanpur test.Kapil had almost done it .But our batsmen spoiled everything.whenever I recall this match.,my hunger dies.
1983-84 season and 1984-85 were the 2 seasons of the Gavaskar-Kapil rift. 2 home series defeats were the result. Indian cricket was the looser.
No!! Chasing 242 on that pitch in 4th innings was impossible....we were 63 for 9 before Maninder and Syed Kirmani saved us the blushes.........we allowed Dujon to score 98 on 2nd morning, that is where we lost the match......
Superb
But print is so bad
poor video quality almost turned me blind
