Digital has come a long way! There are SO many awesome pedals that do it all... maybe I need to make a mini pedalboard after all... Presets + Links to the HX One in the description-
I've been using an HX Stomp for well over 3 years, and it's amazing. The Effects are incredible, and you've done a great job exploring and dialing them in the HX One! 👍
Fun video. As a long time helix user, who just bought an fm9, my biggest sticking points with the helix were the amp sounds and the reverbs (not that there is anything wrong with them, they just didn't quite sit right to my ears. I used to have a big sky, and the cloud is my jam, and the helix doesn't do cloud). the drives, delays, modulation, compression, etc, are as good as anything out there. The hx stomp can replace half a pedalboard.
Thanks Nick! For sure- I haven't used a stomp or Helix so I can't speak to the amp thing, but I've heard similar critiques to what you're saying. Pretty cool devices!
Phenomenal demo! Next level! My difficulty with digital multi-effects units has always been that they require a LOT of tweaking to get the sound to within 99% of what I'm after, whereas I can arrive there more quickly with analog pedals and get to the 100% mark. That said, you got these sounds REALLY close to their counterparts and didn't seem to take forever to get there.
Thank you so much!! There's definitely a learning curve to the multi-fx boxes- It took me a while to get a feel for them, but then something just clicked and now programming changes is actually quite a bit quicker for me, and practical. I can't see myself turning knobs in the middle of a set, let alone remember where to turn them to for each song haha! I found the HX One to be fairly intuitive too! Most of the parameters are pretty straight forward which helps-
I guess the main reason I sold most of my pedals and bought an HX keeping only my very favorites is that every time I gigged there would always be something in the signal path that would get messed up. When you have 13 pedals connected in series this bound to happen. Thanks for showing you can get really close with an HX.
Thanks so much! I know what you mean- I've had a cable go down in the middle of a set many a time. Definitely not the most fun thing to happen when you're playing, but it almost feels like a right of passage in a way lol-
Line 6 dynamic plate with long decay (in stereo) is probably one of the best ambient reverbs I've heard. I pretty much use my HX One as a reverb pedal, even though it's pretty good at everything else.
I’m a bass player but love your simple and effective approach to your video. Some of the early patches in the video seem to have a bit less gain than the sound you are trying to emulate if that helps 🤔
Thank you so much homie! That could definitely be. I've noticed that when I A/B things live, hearing the difference in gain is more difficult than when listening back on a recording. But at any rate, this was one of those cases where I spent so much time A/Bing it, it was just time to let the video be haha! Appreciate you-
400 more bucks and you have HX FX. Then you could do modulation/dly/od/etc, with 5-6 FX at once. For the value and quick 'pedal tone grabs' I can see how this could work most times. Good vid man!
While I've been a Helix user for a while I didn't expect it would be so close to some of those, especially the fuzz where the digital tends to fail. Good work there, even if maybe the HX FX would suit you more as a live pedalboard replacement, rather than the HX One which is more of a "jack of all trades" pedalboard addition in case you need that one odd effect every once in a while
Hey great video! Im operating my HX One in stereo. But when I switch to true bypass, a signal only comes out on one side (left side). On DSP bypass it's completely normal on stereo. How to solve this? Or does stereo not work on true bypass? Please help!
Hey Justin! Could you post what algorithms you used for the A/B tests against the other pedals? I’ve been trying to get a good fuzz tone on my HX one and yours sounded soo good!
I know we got it sorted, but I'll post here for anyone else who has this question. The HX One files don't work on the big Helix unfortunately, but I can provide the FX modules and settings for those interested.
Hi, for my ear it sounded like you have overall a little bit less volume on Hx one, which is made some audible difference at the midrange of every preset that you made and made the sound less rich than the pedals
@@JustinMuncy it says - “BUILDING YOUR PEDALBOARD? WATCH THIS BEFORE YOU DO Justin Muncy replicates some of his pedalboards iconic guitar effects using only the HX® One! Can the HX One take over some of his pedals? Watch the video and find out!”
I've never used the M5, but I do really enjoy the HX One. I guess I'd say, if you don't currently have either, why not get the latest algorithms on their FX and the most updated features with the HX One? But if you already have an M5 and it's working for you, there's nothing wrong with keeping it. Great tone is great tone!
I think Line 6 was probably thinking if consumers will buy a pedal that does 1 thing for 300 dollars, then the fact that this does 250 for the same price is an added bonus. Sort of like the H9-
It's exactly what I want! My board is mostly analog, but this is great way to get the effects I only use for one or two songs, without lugging six pedalboards around! It's MIDI-controlled, so I can use the presets on my switcher to switch the FX on the HX One when I need them. Extra bonus, I can use the One to try out different effects in my setup without having to buy a new pedal every time!
Sorry, sounds like crap to me to be honest. Maybe you got a bad mic or someting but it's so muddy it hurts to listen to it. I use a Line 6 Pod XT Pro Rackmount with a Line 6 FBX controller, through a Marshall 9200. No need for a bunch of pedals, it's got all the best ones built in and I can run several effects at a time. I like the Line 6 setup for my effects and the power of the 9200's Stereo 100w 5881 powered amps. Plenty of power and a great tone.
It sounds great but I don’t understand how the company who launched the hx stomp the most functional pedal ever dropped this unit with such limited usability. Hopefully it gets upgraded to do amps.
@@Terrysoddy I definitely understand the thought! If you’re looking for a true multi effect pedal then yes, grabbing something like a stomp would be more effective. I’ve done a few tours myself, and I think it could actually be pretty useful depending on your rig. Here’s just a couple of ideas: 1. The small footprint is great if you’re trying to keep your rig compact, which seems to be the trend now. You could use this for all of your drive sounds and utilize the midi to switch through them, so while you can only use 1 drive sound at a time, you can flip through presets to use a wide variety of drives that would allow you to potentially roll with just this for all of your drive tones. You could do the same thing for each type of effect: modulation, delay, reverb, etc. 2. It’s pretty handy for those times you need a specific funky sound that you wouldn’t use otherwise. You could have this one pedal that could potentially be whatever you need instead of having to buy a bunch of different pedals for those one off sounds.
Digital will never sound the same. Digital sounds flat with much less complexity to the drive and fuzz. The pedal board has sweed harmonics. I know a lot of touring bads and churches I've been to use the Kempers, and even those are lacking. But for touring bands with fly cases or churches that need low stage volume they make more sense.
I think I need two of these on my board next to each other at the end of drive section and beginning of modulation. Why not just get the stomp, you say? Seems like more options for my style this way. Thanks for the video. Sealed the deal on the HX One for me.

Impressive how close you managed to match so many top tier pedals. That Belle Star though had some special sparkle that the HX One didn't quite do.
