As a guitar teacher, the m5 was the pedal I recommended every pedal-beginner to start with. Every time a student asks for a certain type of pedal we try the digital one to see if he/she really likes it. Then we search for the right variant in the right price range of that pedal for the student.
Sure, and my flight instructor said fly Microsoft Flight Sim planes to find the one I like, before I buy it...
@@kennethc2466…
@@kennethc2466 ....and the useless unfunny trolls have entered the room...
@@elguapo5467 Don't speak about yourself that way. I'm sure your trolling is very useful to your frail ego.
@@kennethc2466actually for a student I think it’s a good idea for them to get a decent multi effects pedal. Then they can learn about each effect. Over time with their multi effects pedal, when they’re ready to upgrade and start building a pedal board if they so please, they will have a much better idea of what they’re looking for. To go out and buy all the different effects in single pedals even cheap ones is still going to be quite expensive.
My current rig is the HX effects into a tonemaster twin reverb. Really happy with the sound and ease of lugging it around. The tonemaster can get crazy loud, but also silent, with straight out to FOH
ohhhhhh Phil coming out swinging with the basssss! I love it
I really love my Line 6 M9 but I also use a Boss ME25 which is great too. I split and go into both together to separate Tonemaster deluxe amp. Too nice.
The main reason I have the HX one is so that I always have the one off effects without having to blot my board
Also something not mentioned here that the M5 may do but if not it justifies the price is the capability to plug the HX One into a loop configuration with your other pedals. In doing so you can save any effect to be either pre or post the position you plugged the pedal in. I made mine first in the chain so that it can be first or last depending on the effect.
The poly capo is a huge benefit for wanting to keep the strat tuned a half step down but play in standard.
Plus every effect has the switch on the right that will shift the effect between 2 snapshots. Example save the default mode of a drive pedal as low gain unity volume, press the snapshot button and it shifts to a high gain high volume. Multiple parameters can be saved to change.
It totally is worth the $ if you are fighting for space on your board.
My helix LT is my friend. Also the Zoom MS is great
just me spotting the Higher Ground base intro ?
The HX drives are a noticeable improvement but the M series is stilll totally usable. I regularly use both.
wow that L6 distortion is fantastic
I gigged a lot with my helix using the ts9 and maxon sd9 models in the front of a solid state amp (randall kh80) and got some amazing tones and great fun.
They fell and sound great.
Philip I see you and I agree on the Line 6 OD's. However I also agree with the ones you mentioned. Line 6 or the HX family of effects are really good . Since I keep my pedalboard small I am kind of looking at the ToneX 1 but I can see the use for either the M5 or the Line 6 One.
I'd like to see a shootout with this, and say a boss GT-1. I own a GT-1 and I enjoy it. Great for a small space playing area.
What guitar is baby blue and white on wall?
The HX Stomp cost me 400 new, 300 for a one-at-a-time fx seems pricey, it only makes sense to me if it gets cheaper or if they implement a 2-3 multiple fx version. If you want a small pedal that can do multi fx at the same time check the ZOOM products, not the same quality but good enough and much cheaper
There are tons of $300 effects pedals that do one effect at once. HX One sounds as good or better than many of them.
Do you notice a latency difference between this and higher-end Line 6 modellers?
nope
Thanks for this. I was contemplating sticking the HX One in the effects loop of my Pod Go to give me a little more DSP.
Huh. Let me know how that works :O
Holy shit, Phil slaps that bass!
Far be it for me to comment, but as great as the M5 and the HX One might sound in terms of the effects, I have a hard time wrapping my brain around the actual utility of what is essentially a one effect at a time device, a true one trick pony. Especially when for not much more money there are tons of mfx units that can allow you to stack multiple effects at once, including from Line6 themselves. Delay is great, but what about when you want chorus and reverb as well? Tremolo and flanger perhaps, with a touch of slapback.
Sure, if you truly love specific, individual Line6 versions of effects, one at a time, OK. And yes, for someone who is looking for rock bottom simplicity in order to experience and get used to how individual effects sound, perhaps.
But I've never been convinced of these specific kinds of one trick units.
Now the Line6 M9 and M13 units seem far more useful and flexible to me. Just my 2cents... XD
Does anyone retail the M13 in the UK? Yamaha London has it but they seem to want RRP
The only new one I have seen is at Yamaha unfortunately. Obviously there are loads for sale secondhand (including one at Coda Music for £229) but I'm guessing you'd be after one with a warranty.
I've had 2 M5, both of them died from the same chip malfunction. It's still one of the best all in one pedal, sadly many of these units are bad.
I’m just here cuz I saw graph paper.
Its a Line 6, so its a guaranteed turd. Rely on it at your peril.
I've replaced my whole pedalboard with the HX Stomp.. no need to deal with annoying patch cables, grip tape, power supplies, carrying a big board around to gigs, needing a carry-case for the board...etc.. not to mention being able to replace an entire bass rig and acoustic rig..all in one. Toss it into my gig bag and go. I do prefer to use a real amp with it, but it's definitely a usable backup rig or travel/fly rig for me.
I have one too, I don't play live, I just record in my room, and I love it. I use it for everything, pedals and amps, only other pedal I have is a Whammy V and i'm good for a lifetime.
But pedals are so fun. But I get it. If you gig a lot it gets tiresome.
sorry if this is a dumb question, but what is the alternative to using a real amp with it?
@@carloshenriquemorais250using the amp models in Stomp directly in foh
I have an M13 that's been gathering dust in the closet for years. This past winter I decided to put it up for sale but I first decided to go online to figure out its sale value. I was figuring maybe $125. I found online that people were still loving this thing, so I decided to just play through it one more time. I realized two things - first, when it comes to time-based effects, no one cares or even can tell if the delay or reverb is coming from some higher-end pedal or something like the M13 in a live gig situation, at least for me who uses effects sparingly to just add a little texture to existing tone. I was even a bit disheartened because the M13 lo-res delay pedal sounded better than my Evantide delay pedal that I bought new for $250. The second thing I realized was that just because it's no longer the newest device on the market doesn't mean it's not worth using anymore. When was the last time anyone ever said, "That band last night would have sounded a lot better if the reverb the guitar player used wasn't from a ten year old amp modeler."? No one notices or cares. I decided I still love my M13. It may not be on my pedalboard and I will never use the distortions on it. But for all the great- sounding time-based pedals and other pedals (the noise gate works well) along with it's ease of use, I'll never get rid of it.
The effects in the M5 are not being updated anymore. WHile the HX One has all of the effects from the helix line, and will keep getting more over time. But perhaps the best reason for getting the HX One over the M5 is the foot switches. M-series footswitch are notorious for failing over time, and they are not ordinary switches. The switches on the HX One are much more standardized AND more robust. You might not have tried all of the Dynamic revers, but they are wonderful. Also, there are many other new effects that are really great. The M5 was killer for its day, but the HX One, even at $100-$150 more, is a cut above in almost every way.
Completely agree. Especially the foot switches. Also, playing live, the LCD display is hard to read unless you bend down and get really close due to tiny backlit screen. Love the sound but hard for me to use live anymore.
Oh dear, I did not know that about the M5 footswtitches. I bought one secondhand last year (mostly on Phil's recommendation). Oh well, let's hope they don't give way soon
Timuih lol. Timah! Like South Park. I cant say for sure but I think there are South Park fans at Line 6.
I own both the M5 and the HX One and without a doubt the HX One is more than worth the extra money.... the footprint, Flux and ability to run it in 4CM, not to mention a better midi integreation really makes it a killer swiss army knife for your pedalboard.... I really do like the M5, and it's served me well for many years, but if I had to pick one the HX one stays without a doubt
HX FX + Tonex for the win!
My HX One has literally not been turned off since I got it several months ago. Not all the effects are great - but many of them are!
Hi Guitar Guy 👦 nice video 📹 and workmanship sounds really good on the first one and try
Forget the pedals. Keep playing bass!!
Okay wait….Phil is a great bass player. He really does SLAP DA BASS MON
I use it on synth! It has a phenomenal stereo reverb called dynamic plate which is probably one of the best reverbs of all time. Better than the cloudburst and it has hundreds of other effects.
I actually thought the acoustic sim sounded pretty good. In my opinion, a person can get as good or better using an electric and sim as opposed to a quacky piezo.
Great review and comparison. That Kiesel bass is sick!
Thank you
Seriously sick!
I use my M5 with my two notes opus and that’s my rig. 100% agree on the M5 drive pedals, the tube driver being the best of the bunch.
I have thought about doing exact same thing.
To this day my heads that I play over anything else is my Line 6 HD147 and Spider Valve mkII HD100.
Love seeing the Vader make an appearance 😁 I'm looking forward to running bass through this also
The HX series has the best polyphonic tune down capability on the market, too...the poly capo. I've used the Drop, the Pitchfork plus, the Fractal FM9, the Quad Cortex, and the HX One/Stomp/Effects outdoes them all. We play a lot of songs in drop tunings; with these pedals, I don't have to retune or carry extra guitars. Kudos, Line 6!
Its a bold claim
A true true test would be if it sounded good playing slide in standard tuning with the Hx pitching it to open E or G. That be shocking if it sounded close to real thing
Phil, your video made me consider again the Line6 all-in-one pedal proposal. I owned and sold an M5 because I wasn't happy with the sound. After watching this video, I reconsidered the idea and finally bought the HX version, of which I am delighted. The sound is superior to the M5. I added it to my pedalboard, and now I'm happy. Thank you for your great videos and ideas. Live long and prosper!
Just buy an HX Stomp. It's twice the price, 50% bigger, and 10 times the unit.
Some of Line 6 products are very underrated.
Line 6 has come a long way, that's for sure! I had one of the first POD XT Live, and it was junk. I told myself I'd never buy another Line 6 product again - I may have to eat those words. I just don't like firmware updates and stuff like that.
some tasty riffing there big Phil - more metal man lol \m/
if your still such a noob that your overwhelmed by hx stomps options, get a m5. its good enough for trey anastasio, so its good enough for us. hx one makes NO sense. a used stomp goes for 300. if you buy a 329 hx one you damage the market. look what ik did with the tonex one sub 200. sorry line6, you have to move, its time. you hypnotised us well but some are waking up. hx stomp is the most value in a pedal. i luv it. next gen it should have full dsp, touchscreen and an optional flightdeck of a helix style foot controller. for whoever wants that. its 2024. done wielding. move. and if you are to impaired to get the hx stomp, let someone show you. or go see your neurologist for early onset Alzheimers.
I owned an M9. Switches were crap, one broke in mine the first month of use at home... The sounds are great tho.
Where is Line 6 having these made (which country)?
I have a M9 on my board. It’s a great learning tool for pedal stacking. I also have a M13 that is my grab and jam all-in-one, and fits perfectly in any laptop case.
Is it worth getting a midi so you can switch between more effects?
how would you rate it next to the new headrush core (price notwithstanding)?
Teemah sounds perfect for covering a Juanes song called Mala Gente
I own 3 - haven't paid more than $125
But the Fluxxxx! Incredible demo
i took my m5 of my board last night, and i'm sad.
I am surprised it is not mentioned that the One has more effects, it has a freeze, multi pitch, and some effects more creative/ambient. I think it is a big plus and the expectation of those effects growing up with new upgrades. I own a Line M5 because of Phillip and I want a Stomp but if I can`t convinced myself to spend that much the One will come sooner or later.
I’m considering one just for the pitch effects alone
The older I get, the more I realize how I don’t need a huge boutique pedalboard and now multi-effects are great
nope.. also need one Swirly Gig and one beer :)
I was lucky enough to get my M5 as a result of being on the beta test team for it. Found the Uni-VIbe program somewhat wanting, but there were LOTS of other interesting effects, well beyond the ordinary. One of the interesting things about the unit, and a great many other stereo pedals, is the opportunity for "re-processing". That is, the output of one channel can be fed, via a cable, to the input of the other channel, to be processed by the DSP all over again. It doesn't always yield something interesting in every case, but some duplicate effects sound really good, and different. Just keep in mind that levels have to be set judiciously, to avoid oscillation. My favorite is to use reverse delay and reprocess that. Many companies assume, quite rightly, that many players will feed such pedals a mono input signal, but *use* the stereo output. Because of this, the DSP often provides a modified form of the effect at the "alternate" output, to produce a stereo effect. Feeding reverse delay back to the other channel gets RE-reversed (i.e., made forward), but it gets combined with the reversed repeats of the first channel, so that the result is a combination of forwards and backwards delays. Plenty of surprises using other effects in a similar manner.
Interesting story. Do you work at l6 that time?
@@Helix-Man No. I would expect that a responsible company would beta-test their products with people who had nothing to do with the company, so as to get the most objective user views. I was also a beta tester for the Tone Core series of pedals. Ironically, because of cross-border customs issues (I'm in Canada, L6 is in California), the pedals they had sent me were held up at FedEx, and shipped back to L6. Jeorge "Mr. Huge" Tripps (then project manager at L6) felt bad about it, and later sent me a big box full of them. I never found out how I was recommended to be a beta-tester, but I gather it was via my long association with the DIYstompbox forum.
@@markhammer643 I just notice you are mark hammer. I spend my college days on your fx forum. No wonder they choose you. Man, I miss that old day.

I have the fractal fm 3 and I will use my zoom 70
Could you please tell them to upgrade the firmware so we can save the presets in off like the M5? Also the tuner doesn’t work in true bypass, there are midi issues etc… I love the M5 and I’ll love the HX one someday, I hope. When they fix the unfinished product that is.
Nice bass playing!
Awesome job!
I loved my M5 on my board for both a tuner and synth sounds. But, it didn’t last long and stopped working. I think I had gotten it for $75 used at the time.
I've never had an M5, but I have two HX Ones. One stays with my bedroom amp so my wife can participate in the fun. The other floats between amps and I very often find myself using it exactly as you described--testing out pedals and sounds that I would otherwise have to buy to try. I had my doubts about the usefulness of a one at a time multi-pedal, but found that it's kind of like a Swiss Army Knife. All the tools in one little package, but you only use one at a time.
Do you use them also together? I was thinking getting 2 as well but I haven't go through all the synths yet
@@theprezenz I've never paired them together, but I have used one to add some DSP to my HX Stomp. I downsized from a Helix floor a while back and sometimes miss the extra parallel FX paths. The HX One is just a good tool to have for flexibility.
Tube Amp GOD MOD! I'm showing the world what everyone doesn't know about tube amps tomorrow on my channel. I'm going to change the music world for everyone tomorrow! Thanks
Phil doing some Mark King level bass slapping 🎸👍
🤘👍🏿
Thank you.
First I got an HX stomp and loved it. Then years later I added a Tonex. And last year I got the Fender FR 10, and my rig is just plain complete. I don't even want anything else. My amps are dusty.
Hi Phil, can the HX One be used with an acoustic electric guitar.
Yes
Yes it can.
I don't even need that. All I need is a straight cord between my guitar and any good tube amp, particularly if it has reverb but I can get along without even that. Plug me straight into a JMP era Marshall and I'm a happy man. No noise toys in between to mess up the signal, please!
Because it’s not! You’ll definitely need a guitar too, preferably with strings. 👍🏻
I had an M13 and it was great! But I was foolish enough to sell it for new pedals and now I'm still trying to build out my pedalboard haha
To me it sounds more than ok, I’m still rocking the g system and would like to upgrade/downsize.
Could you review hotone pedals?
👍👍Best cure for GAS is to go straight to your gear and find 'That Sound'
Chances are very good that you already have it, or a close enough version.
Like the copper finish BTW
I'm not really much of a guitarist, but enjoy as a hobby. I agree w/ Phillip on the M5. I have two of them, one in front of amp for filter fx like wah, whammy, etc. (Like he said, not a fan of the distortion sound) The other one is in the loop for time fx, like flange or phase. I have dedicated pedals for drive, delay, 'verb. but the M5 is for things not used that ofter and don't warrant stand alone pedal, like a phaser.
Okay Phil - more bass demos as long as you slap bass! Loved it. I’ve had an M5 for years and always come back to it.
Mike Campbell Tom Petty’s guitar player had a blue M4 on his pedal board!
Phil, I am still considering a version of a Kemper-your thoughts?
I just got the M5 and I love it. I used to use the POD HD500 but stopped being happy with the amp sims and ODs. But I really missed the reverbs (especially the Particle Verb) but needed something that fit on my board. The first time I used it I discovered I needed chorus, which I would never buy. Turns out I already had one on my board in the M5. I don’t care for the size, but I have spare room on my board.
I bought an M5 because Bob Bradshaw said it was great. The man who built foot controllers and rack systems for a lot of great players.
It’s a great affordable product I just find that most of the sounds I don’t like while the h9 I love the sounds and usability
Affordable modeling systems like this or the Spark amps are pretty great for the whole try it before you buy it thing. Even if they aren’t “the same” they’re pretty dang close and a tiny fraction of the cost.
If you play live, just get a Stomp or Quad Cortex. All the tones you need.
I think this is to say good bye for Line6 to the old Pod HD-base units, as they are moving to HX-based units.
My first rig was a Silver faced Fender Champ and a Pro Co Ratt pedal. I still like that combination.
I'm not sure if the M5 has the updated Reverbs and Pitch shifting effects which are both much better than what was previously available.
Thanks Phil. I just bought an HX-one and spent a couple of hours just going through the effects and found several that I really like. I really do feel it is a money-saver in the long run and the effects are very good quality IMHO. I need to take the time to do a deep dive and learn how to use it correctly, and this video is a great start.
Does the HX One have all the effects on it or do you have to choose to miss some out due to DSP limitations? Cheers
@@keithb5612 The HX-one has over 250 available effects as well as several options on parameters within each effect. I haven't found any limitations at all other than the fact that you can only use one effect at a time. The sub-menus on each effect allows you to modify several different aspects of the effect to dial it in to your liking.
@@Russell_Optics Many thanks for your reply
Heyyyyy phil playing a bass on this review. More of this is always appreciated.
The idea of having a unit that you can sort of “preview” pedals before purchasing is worth the $150 cost right there.
I bought one (M5) after the last time I heard you talk about it. It was a good pedal but it crapped out after a year with no wear at all. Just sat on a shelf. Not giving them my money again.
M5 is criminally underrated and under priced on second hand market… which is a good thing actually for guitar players
My M5 is the centre of my ambient and modulation sounds for my pedal board. Its the SAK of pedals
Please check the new Zoom Multistomp and compare it to Line 6.
The m5 will never be off my board because at the very least it’s an excellent tuner. But man is it tons of fun when looking to experiment or find something new.
None of the drive settings were impressive. That is because I prefer clean tube amps with a hint of overdrive.
Like to have something like this. Been looking for a modulation/delay/reverb pedal. But I need a pedal that has more than one pedal at a time.
what pickups model are yuu using on that strat?
