Hi Heather, I love the way you break everything down in your videos into easily digestible chunks. My view point on Etsy Ads specifically is that your not necessarily aiming to “profit” from the Ads directly, but instead you are aiming to get your products and shop ranked so that your organic sales end up increasing over time. Some of the most successful shops that utilise Etsy max budgeting allowance on their listings don’t make much “profit” directly from the Ads but what they do find is that their overall profit line has increased significantly a their products begin to organically rank better, which in turn allow you to turn off ads for those better ranking products. Running Ads does seem like a scary process as know one wants to end up spending money they aren’t getting back. Fully optimised listings are they key!! Do not pay for Ads on listings that are not fully optimised because you will just waste your money. Important to note that due to the way Etsy itself works, I personally would apply a different ad strategy to any other type of ads that are external to Etsy
Conclusion: if you’re a seller in Europe, don’t run adds because you will have a negative profit! As a European, I also have to pay 21% on all the Etsy fees ( listing, processing, offsite), adds, shipping and base costs on products. Also, there’s a 2,5% conversion fee (+ 21%) on the customers side ( if you have your store in euro, Etsy adds extra 2,5% on top of the my price, so i have to price lower to be competitive) or sellers side ( if you have your store in dollar, Etsy takes extra 2,5% fee on top of the 6,5%). When Erank tells me i have $10 profit, i actually make about $7 in profit….
I'm in Australia; I don't run the 'promoted listings' ads (the ones that come up in search), but I do run the Offsite Ads which is a different program. For those you only get charged if someone buys something. With promoted listings you get charged per click.
@@penelopesparrow I live in Denmark. Have you noticed if the off site ads have boosted your sales?
@@highburnlearn8092 they have boosted visibility but only 1 sale from them in the last 30 days. I only post to Australia though and I don't know if the ads are shown to everyone or just Australians - the ads are shown all over the place so I assume everyone sees them. But since you don't get charged unless someone buys, the traffic is still free.
@@penelopesparrow Thanks so much for replying. This is actually SO helpful. I wish you and your shop much success!
@@highburnlearn8092 aww happy to help! the best of success to you too! x
I have been running at 25 since I started, which is only 1 month.
I am very behind, but I dont think I would have near as many sales and revenue had I not had it, only problem is so far I have spent more on ads than my total revenue, but I am catching up.
I’d like to see your sales numbers you received without ads.
I’ve spent six months designing and learning and listing full time and have 117 listings hoodies and shirts . I’m starting to feel like it was a massive waste of time because I could knock on my neighbours door and offer to mow their lawns or clean their oven and 1 hrs work would make me 30 dollars profit . Feel like I’ve wasted six months of my life 😢
First I wanna say how much I love your vids . The advice I’ve taken from just a few of your vids have tripled my views and sales . I watched the whole vid and was wondering if you will be making a video with all the things u wish u had done like increasing the price of your items . I’d really like to see the results . Ty for sharing all your insights , they really help ! But most of all ty for your time ! Happy holidays .
Hey there, thanks for the kind words here and woohoo to increased views and sales!🎉 I have a video on my new shops update I posted a month or so ago I’d recommend watching where I go over what I wish I’d done with my new ad strategies. Wishing your shop the best and happy holidays as well!❤️
This is the video that I go over this:

If you saw ads as a form of getting awareness to your shop (knowing you’ll not make a profit) rather than revenue would you recommend it?
Hey Heather! Thank you for what you do.
This was a very helpful Etsy marketing video - Thank you for sharing.
Thank you sooo much Heather! That was great!
Thanks for the analysis. I am convinced that Etsy ads are not for me. Maybe Facebook or Google ads would work better.
Do you think the extra traffic and sales increased your sales velocity enough to improve your organic listings?
i see etsy ads more to promote new items and give visibility than profit
Would like to see a case study on ONLY organic traffic from f.ex. TicToc, Instagram and Pinterest 🙏
is it okay to run ads even if you have no sales yet? and run ads on the listings that are found in Etsy but no sales yet? hoping for your response or any of you guys have an idea? answers are highly appreciated thanks
I applied for the Facebook group today again. Hopefully, I'll be accepted this time 🙏
I have yet to pay for ads, since it doesn't guarantee conversions. I guess as long as you make more than you spent in ads, it is worth it. Can you deduct the cost of advertising as a business expense? Then it is worth it. Otherwise from what you are saying, it is a loss. I get the advertising is a factor in drawing in business, but maybe having your own website and drawing in traffic to your site vs competing with thousands of sellers on Etsy. Do you promote your Etsy shop on social media?
Yes ads are a cost of doing business. It’s always a good thing to have your own site in case Etsy decides to shut you down.
So do you ad your whole shop? Or just specific listings? Once you start getting more sales organically than through ads, do you turn the ad off for that listing so another listing can start getting more views? I am running into my ad budget being spent on 1 listing because its being showing it like 8 fold comoared to my other listings. I am putting ads on 18 listings of my 158 (started this past October so im growing)...sorry so long lol appreciate any clarifying information
How many listings did you run ads on?
Great video. Thanks so much for sharing!
Me: I think I've seen this one already.
Also me: Yeah, but I just want to listen to Heather talk for a while, so I'm gonna watch it again.
Hahaha!! Thanks for this comment, it gave me a good laugh😂
i'm at 20 minutes so not sure if u mention this, but I think ad costs can be deducted from taxes too
Great video, I really appreciate how honest you were about it and how different factors may/not have made a difference. For my personal experience ads work in my vintage store, *as long as* I keep shipping domestic only (Australia). When I had global shipping my budget was chewed up and didn't see me profit. (I'm assuming US customers were spooked by the horrific shipping). In my jewelry shop I have global shipping so I don't run promoted listings, I just use Offsite Ads as I only get charged if there's a sale.
Hi Heather! This video was so informative and helpful for Etsy sellers! I opened my shop in September and started running ads right away. Unfortunately, now I'm only getting sales from Etsy ads. I turned them off for two weeks and within those 2 weeks, got 0 traffic, 0 clicks, and no views on listings. The only way I'm able to get sales now is via Etsy Ads. Is there anything you can suggest to help me get through this?
Do you promote your Etsy shop on social media?
@@mikewest2101 agree, Etsy was so much better back in the day. It was also easy to network with other shops. And the chat room was really helpful too. Made it feel like a community.
If you’re spending money on ads anyway you could try paying for advertising outside of Etsy to bring traffic in. Maybe pay to promote pins that lead back to your Etsy shop. Even though Etsy will ding you after you turn your ads off to try and encourage you to turn them back on, if you bring in a decent flow of outside traffic the Etsy algorithm should start rewarding your listings with organic Etsy traffic again.
Hi Heather I factor in Etsy fee's around 11.2% because the 6.5% doesn't factor in the payment processing fee or the listing fee - am I doing it wrong?? When I calculate your sweatshirt profit I come up with approx., $11 profit for sweatshirt that is selling for $39. I have also noticed my sales are less than they were last year, I do you think the economy is hurting our sales just like you said. Great video thank you for doing this, you are super inspirational!
today I went from 10 dollars to 50 dollars ads... scary!
Hello great information, l have 12 listings just started Etsy Ad for $5 as a newbie any suggestion?
It would be interesting to know if sales overall are good or did you just make $28 for the month? It doesn’t seem possible to make much money aka profit selling on Etsy for yourself. Seems to go to POD and Etsy from this 😢 hopefully I’m missing something.
I made $48 profit on the items I spent ads on. I would go to the chapter on this video called ‘profit breakdown’ at 11:57 where I explain this is in more detail. I’ve made in total 3K profit for the month in the video with organic and paid ads. I generate over 15K in revenue each month and Etsy and POD does take out quite a bit(like more retail sales) but I still have a average monthly take home profit of over 3K+ as of 2022(2021 I had 7K+ a month). The advertised items are the lowest amount of my profit gain. Hopefully the breakdown makes more sense! :)
@@itsheatherstudio thank you so much Heather! 💜
@@itsheatherstudio it’s crazy how much money goes to Etsy and POD 😓 But well worth not working for someone else for 40 hrs a week! If I can only get there ugh Etsy isn’t like the old days were there
These are indeed very low numbers 😕
Great Video. Do you currently run an Etsy store besides Heatherxstudio? Would like to try but still on the fence.
Have you tried FB ads to drive traffic?
So the limit it’s $25 dollars a day, is that’s 25 clicks a day ?
Well once again, Etsy wins.
The problem with this video and the key element that is left out is that she already has a successful ETSY shop. If you have no sales or are just starting out, this information is pointless at this time.
blooper were awesomer. I was also in the same situation while recording video
Etsy, a lot of revenue and work for no profit.
Nothing. Nothing happened.
So basically you're working to make money for Etsy and Printify except you. Not good!
Where is 6digit business and the sale of 5wweatshirts a day? Great informational video regardless. I guess at the end of the year the taxes take whatever is left.....
You are amazing, Much appreciated. KIM Cambodia professional tour guide at ANGKOR.
with that being said
You have really great content and I have watched many of your vids. Just trying to be constructive but you say "That being said" a whole lot in this video.
