  • I'm working on a Canon R8 Review and discovered what I think is a design flaw the Canon r8 Battery. I really feel you need to know about this.

To help battery life dramatically switch ON Flight mode and Switch OFF GPS mode

I’m a camera enthusiast, not a pro. I don’t get paid to take pictures. I bought the R8 a few weeks ago and took it out for the first time and was worried about the battery life after watching reviews. I took about 400 JPG+Raw pics over a few hours. Got home and was still at full bars. So, I’m happy I didn’t worry about the battery but I’m glad to know that half bars doesn’t mean 50% battery life. That’s stupid.

Yeah, it's a dream camera for your scenario. The battery life is more of an issue for video...both because it uses it faster and forces you to shot of the camera sometimes when you don't want to. For casual pictures, it's an amazing camera (and super light!)

Aftermarket RP battery grips work with the R8. You just have to disconnect it to remove your SD card

Whaat, that's basically a car without a fuel gauge with only the low-fuel light. I never understood how it worked and was thinking that my current battery was false. Thanks for that info.
But one thing I like about the R8 and other models is the possibility to charge the camera trhough USB. With my Canon M200 I need to bring the charger whenever I think I'll use more than one battery charge.

Was recording on my R8 on Saturday night and lost the footage because the camera turned off. Battery was showing 50%. The R8 has battery and overheating issues

Just got my R8 yesterday and haven't really try out yet. Speaking about the battery life if you coming from the RP for photos ot great, video will need to carry more batteries. If using it to film taking head will definitely use a dummy battery. I mainly use it for show room walk through so it ok for me. Thanks for sharing.

Why not just use a dummy battery to tap to a larger power source? Easy solution.

Yeah, for sure. Just info for people who plan to use it as a run and gun vlog/travel camera (which is my plan)

why not buying camera with bigger battery to begin with? lol

  • @PeterGregg
    @PeterGregg Год назад

Those little batteries are a pain in the bottom. I honestly think that when a camera is saddled with such a small battery for cost saving purposes there should be a built in option (meaning make the battery hole accommodate a bigger one too - dual purpose) to buy optional bigger batteries too. To have such a small battery is restricting how usable the camera is. After you bought it, why do you have to live with a very tight usage restriction. If there was a way to pay and have a bigger battery fit the camera, then you can make a personal choice to use your camera more than allotted with the smaller battery. It's sad to here this, good find thought! 👍👍👍👍👍

The best way to read the actual battery capability (mAh) is to drain it completely and charge it via USB along with a USB power meter. As well, the mAh drops as a battery aged. Also, it is nice to figure out how accurate is the camera's power indicator.
Hence, the R8's power indicator at 100% should represent 1040 mAh, and topping the battery up at 50% should get ~520 mAh from the power meter. If not, then one should rethink what the indicator actually represents.

Charging is not 100% efficient, nor is the voltage conversion in the charger.

How long does the Canon R8 battery last when shooting FHD video?

This really only is a video recording issue. I’ve been using the R8 for a few days now shooting a bunch, but never lost a single bar. Seems pretty good to me. But again, im not a videographer

yeap, used the R8 for video work and the battery issue was exactly this.
used 4 batteries for a 9 hour event (photos and video)

mine is good, one fully charged battery gives me 350+ jpg photos easily, for video u need at least 3 batteries for 8-9 hours event which is sad.(1080p, 25frames)

You still loose footage like in the M50 ?! this is unusable for professional video usage.

Yeah, I returned this camera because of the tiny, hilariously bad battery. The battery life is awful, it shows full or 50% and very quickly dies, just like you were talking about. Not to mention, the sd slot being in the battery compartment just causes even more hassle if you use some kind of third party battery grip, which I wouldn't, or some other jerry-rigged option. I wasn't even using it for video, just stills, and I was blown away by how fast it died.
I was willing to deal with no ibis, one card slot, etc, because the sensor and auto-focus are actually incredible at $1500. The design choices otherwise, (especially battery, sd location) are just silly.
People are out here defending it like they have personal stake, or work for Canon. No, it's bad. If you are willing to deal with it, that's fine, but it hasn't been talked about enough and there are too many people saying it's not that bad.

with all the sales going on I would still get the R8… especially for photography.
The battery life and overheating issues are mainly a problem for videography.

Sony is gonna take over canon in UX of the camera soon. Menu overhaul has already taken over new Sony cameras.
I haven’t had any issues with my R8 till now. It’s running good.

Thank you for making this video. My wife recently got the Canon R8. It was a great upgrade from the Canon RP. One of the biggest issues she has is battery life. The RP gotten way better battery life. Right now she's doing 99% photography and 1% video. She scared to shoot extra video because the battery life is so bad just taking pictures. We do wildlife and sometimes will find these exotic birds and as soon as she goes to take a picture the battery dies. And it will be her first shot. Literally, what I'm trying to say is she takes the battery charges it, put it in the camera, we get to the location and when she goes to push the shutter for the first time the battery dies immediately with no warning whatsoever! She's lost dozens of shots due to this issue. I don't like the fact that there's no warning like when you get to 25% or anyting it just goes black. Hopefully Canon will acknowledge and fix this in a future firmware update.

    the battery indicator is perfect.
it serve the purpose so canon user will be switching to their camera with bigger battery. tadaaaaaaaa!
you can thank me later for this marketing info lol
if you think deeply how to sell a 20MP camera with premium price?
well canon already got the recipe.
by selling under spec camera as cheap as possible and give it bad battery life and confusing battery indicator.
people will be buying the camera and when they investing for RF lens, you got a buyer for R6 without even trying.
canon must be paying more for their marketing team rather than investing on RnD.
they can use bigger battery for RP and R8, nobody will be complaining about a little bit weight or 2 millimeter wider. but no, they have to selling you the r6.
this is bad business practice, but if costumer still buying and supporting? no problem
