Lexus looks like a Rubbermaid box with fancy designs and chrome accents on it, posing as something luxurious. But it will prolly last years longer than the Volvo, I'll give it that.
What a rubbish review. People looking at these cars are interested in interior space, boot space - which car had the better ride? Economy, reliability, ability to get out of a muddy car park, or drive in the snow. Comparing two cars of different trim specs is also not really that informative. It would be like doing an M4 Vs C63 with the only pass criteria being which had the best cup holders. I have an RX as the family barge, its economical, reliable, comfy, the CVT is transparent when being driven normally, despite being superbly engineered it is BORING, but was it really intended to be not boring? I love the look and feel of the Volvo but don't fancy the cost of a replacement battery pack should that ever fail out of warranty (much like the Cayenne hybrid) and don't think it will be a shining example of reliability.

Colour more vivid and much sharper like it suppose to. Threw the Volvo one away immediately even though it cost almost $70 ( South Africa) for that junk.
I’ve got a T8, and the 20mile elec range is surprisingly useful. I drive pretty much every day - so the 20 miles adds up to 7,000 miles per year. I.e. the first 7,000 miles I do each year is elec. And if I plug it in at home that’s less than half the price of petrol driving.
The drone of that Lexus in sport mode drove me crazy, not gonna lie 😂 The Volvo seems like the better car, and it also has a lot of crash safety going for it!

We had a Mitsubishi PHEV for a year but didn’t like it. The Lexus made it feel like lightweight with poor build quality. Thanks again. Regards Bob M. South Wales
I don't think that Volvo will last 12 Years like the X5 did. I don't even wanna think about the repair bills when you have a hybrid engine, with a Supercharger and a Turbo under the bonnet. That being said, the XC90's (and all new Volvos) are stunning. The design is just about perfection.
Japanese cars are so reliable; it’s a royal pain in the backside when your car is stuck in the garage and waiting nervously for the bill. I’ve had hybrids and electric for over twenty years, and never had any problems with Lexus or Toyota hybrid systems. The batteries last the life of the vehicle. My last Prius had over 260k miles and still went like a tank. Their reliability puts others to shame.
I have to say, I do like both of these cars, practicality wise, nice boot space. The Lexus boot opening sensors however to me looks a bit of a gimmick as there is a specific way to put your hand. The XC90 seems a bit easier. Driving wise the lexus was droning on when pressing hard on the accelerator pedal and to me it seems its EV mode will be more effective in heavy traffic. Overall the Volvo for me. There's only one small negative I have to say with the XC90. It looks like when you drive behind a car for the front sensors not to activate it seems you have a drive one car length away. Can that be adjusted to at least a metre away. I know driving too close to another car is dangerous. I even get nervous when people drive too close behind my swift. I always get the sense that if I were to suddenly slow down the other car will slam behind my car, but to me a car length is too much.
RX design is strange. The interior is comfortable but the seats are wide so short people will not rest both elbows on the motorway. The trunk space is small in comparison to vehicles in its class. The trunk opens slowly. It is quiet, the seat is comfortable, the leather is good, the infotainment system is livable. The screen is massive and I like that. My wife can`t change the destination, when she is a passenger. That is pathetic form from Lexus - they know there is a passenger from the seatbelt and seat sensors. It is very inconvenient for us. Toyota has already proven the reliability of all hybrid components - engine, trans and e-AWD. Volvo has a turbo&super charged high-pressure 2.0l engine. I would worry to buy that second hand. So the air suspension is proven to be expensive to maintain. The resale value might be small, for those who care about things like that.
Could i ask you guys something? I need to pick a new car at work, i'm considering the Volvo S60 or the Arteon. What should i pick? Haven't found a lot of films on these range of cars thanks!
Laurent, impossible to say. All depends on your biases and preferences. Personally I think Volvo’s interiors are the best in class and previously owning several they were always bullet proof and very safe for transporting the kids. Both manufacturers offer 48 hr test drives in the UK.
Really bad test of the Lexus. The rear seats are some of the comfiest I’ve sat in. They both slide backwards/forwards and can be reclined almost horizontally. Incredibly comfortable. The 3rd row are clearly for kids anyway, as most 7-seats cars/SUVs are, so that’s not an issue. The PHEV will always win for elec-only driving over a normal hybrid, that’s obvious. The Volvo is lovely as well. All depends on what you want out of the car.
Rohan George yes you maybe right and they are not ideal for lots of people but perfect for some. Both cars had enough power but possibly not enough if power was the most important criteria
Can't see how you can call the Lexus a hybrid with CO2 at 134. As a company car owner I'd have been interested but the tax is crippling compared to the Volvo with 52.
Tiff I had all the same issues on my RS6 all the electronics telling me what to do and even overruling me, so I switched it ALL OFF!! .. :-) On one occasion it actually scared the hell out of me... I really wasn't anticipating the car to do it's own thing. Other than that it's a great car. On the flip side it can get 40 mpg... which is crazy given it's performance and not that I care. 16 mpg would be more than sufficient.
Volvo everyday! I’m buying a new XC90 soon, but the regular one, the T6, not hybrid... That Lexus is just soooo ugly... It is just a Rav-4 disguised as a Lexus, and that exaggerated look will age so, so poorly. The Volvo has been around for a while and it still looks as handsome as it has ever been. A beautiful car! Power to good design!!
I have a 2018 Volvo s90 which is the sedan version and I like the car but its had some problems early in its ownership. I don't think I'd want to keep too long past its warranty. The brakes aren't that good, the suspension is way too stiff and it still rolls in the corners. But that interior of that Lexus looks like a 2012 model and the Volvo has ahead of its time tech. I have self driving on mine and it comes standard. All in all I like my Volvo alot.
As a former Volvo owner I got tired of having problems not being resolved by the dealer. So Lexus (Toyota) vehicles are for me. 2017 RX 350 and 2019 Toyota RAV 4. 2001 RX 300 lasted 263,000 miles without many problems. I understand Volvo is A subsidiary of the Chinese automotive company Geely.
Lovecars along with more power, the XC90 clearly has the edge in terms of EV capability and I wouldn't have a problem paying up to £5000 more for a comparably equipped Volvo, but no more. On the other hand, if I were planning to keep the vehicle for more than just a few years, the peace of mind that comes with Lexus' long term quality, reliability, and durability is priceless.
Police officer: Sir, do you know how fast you were going? Tiff: I only touched the throttle! Police Officer: You were going 100 in a 30.. Tiff: I TICKLED THE THROTTLE..!
The styling on the front of the Lexus reminds of the Cylon helmets from the original (1978) Battlestar Galactica . All that is missing is the red laser light and the voice synthesizer saying "by your command". Cool looking car, but I wouldn't want to sit in the back of it with such a low roof line - the same reason as to why I don't like the Toyota C-HR . Are all car designers vertically challenged? Don't they realise that the average height of the population is increasing? 6ft+ is the norm for teenagers now! Still, I would love to drive the Lexus.
I'll take Volvo, the RX-L was a after thought, so obviously is gonna suck in the third roll. the new 2020 Highlander which the next generation of RX and RX-L are based on, only have slight improvement in third roll comfort, so don't expect too much on next gen RX-L.
@@Ilikepie18855 seating in xc90 is like being in first class cabin of Etihad vs, lexus which is United air line seat...Absolutely no comparison. You want class. Comfort and luxury, you go with Volvo.

Gents, read the manuals before testing... ex - the Volvo has a simple (!) steering wheel mounted control for the distance ahead windscreen warning display. That said, a quick realisation was had in that these two cars are in completely different leagues. Poor test chaps.
Pedal feel for brake by wire is quite the interesting subject. With ignition on (excuse me, the drive mode selector knob or button) you depress pedal and it is scary as there is very long travel before you find the point where brakes have hydraulic application. With vehicle in driving mode and you move even at a slow pace you depress pedal and the vehicle brakes with regenerative or hydraulic or maybe both, and you think the pedal is hard. Our brains have little actual sense of foot effort. The brake pedal sense all based on the push versus deceleration sensing.
I have watched many reviews of lexus/mercs/volvo xc90/BMW x5 and x7. This is the first review where a reviewer has criticised a Lexus interior (other than the entertainment system). The middle row of the lexus can be adjusted to get more leg room. The 3rd row is admittedly for kids only. The younger reviewer should have also test driven the lexus. Tiff is an old English racing driver, stuck in his ways. Who test drives this type of car and only really comments on the sporty attributes? Carwow and savagegeese do a much more comprehensive balanced review of the lexus....they praise its interior and its soft plush comfortable ride
my old RX450Hybrid still runs perfect with 230000km and first battery and its 3,5ltr n/a engine in Atkinsoncycle runs still smooth and very depressing ! I doubt a turbo+supercharged little Lawnmower-engine will last that long ! ruclips.net/video/3bSB_TdBA8A/видео.html
Bought the Lexus in Takumi trim saved over £18k against the Volvo to a similar specification and put the £18k towards an Audi S4 Avant V6 turbo petrol (not diesel, Audi what were you thinking!!!, best of both worlds achieved, tick.
The XC90 was £18k more? Viewed an XC90 and an RX Takumi straight after - straight away the RX felt far superior quality and went with that. Didn't bother enquiring on price for XC90, it was unimpressive.
The only thing wrong with the xc90 was the introduction of the touchscreen, it's horrid looking, unlike the rest of the interior. And it's terrible ergonomically, Buttons will always be better.

Rohan George yes you maybe right and they are not ideal for lots of people but perfect for some. Both cars had enough power but possibly not enough if power was the most important criteria
5.5 seconds to 60 not enough???
Which would Tiff prefer? 2 seconds plugging in the Volvo, or 5 minutes queueing at the petrol station?
🤷♂️
Lexus
👍
Can't see how you can call the Lexus a hybrid with CO2 at 134. As a company car owner I'd have been interested but the tax is crippling compared to the Volvo with 52.
Tiff is the best.
Thank you. He reads the comments and will be pleased with this one!
Aaaaaand... Tiff gets air!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gold.
💪💪
Volvo includes a really nice cleaning cloth in the glove compartment for the display.
What was your favourite out of the two Tiff?
There was no conclusion
Tiff I had all the same issues on my RS6 all the electronics telling me what to do and even overruling me, so I switched it ALL OFF!! .. :-) On one occasion it actually scared the hell out of me... I really wasn't anticipating the car to do it's own thing. Other than that it's a great car. On the flip side it can get 40 mpg... which is crazy given it's performance and not that I care. 16 mpg would be more than sufficient.
Great item as usual lads thanks
Thank you very much
Volvo everyday!
Did you get lost driving to the school? You drove through lockerly, then west dean towards tytherley, then west dean again.
Volvo XC90 T8 😘😍😍😍👑
For that price only Land or Lex. Amazing cars 👍. Thank you
Volvo 👌
Ha lovely quality that Volvo until it breaks.
Nice video Hopefully you complete your success to 100M subscribers
🙌🙌
I love the Volvo
Volvo for life Swedish steel safest car 😁
U want a car sitting at shop waiting for overpriced repairs and parts - volvo.
U want worry free car - lexus.
why do you say that
3:51 looks like the car is levitating forwards without the wheels rotating!
👀
That is due to the frame rate of the video camera matching the wheel frequencies
Lexus....Boxy Volvo versus Aerodynamic Lexus....+Lexus reliability+retention value......
The Volvo is quite aerodynamic actually.
Every single these days is tested in wind tunnels so they get better mileage. So There shouldnt be any real difference.
Unfortunately there really isn't a self-charging hybrid but it is a gas charging hybrid haha. Nice video as always though!
nodrogkam thank you. It’s not for everyone but would certain work for some people extremely well
im more of a Lexus guy than a Volvo guy, but on this one id take the Volvo
Would you pay the extra $$ for the Volvo though? :)

Volvo hands down. Lexus design reminds me of a Pontiac Aztec. Slightly garrish!!!!
If you compare Volvo with Lada you might have a winner
The styling on the front of the Lexus reminds of the Cylon helmets from the original (1978) Battlestar Galactica . All that is missing is the red laser light and the voice synthesizer saying "by your command". Cool looking car, but I wouldn't want to sit in the back of it with such a low roof line - the same reason as to why I don't like the Toyota C-HR . Are all car designers vertically challenged? Don't they realise that the average height of the population is increasing? 6ft+ is the norm for teenagers now! Still, I would love to drive the Lexus.
They are both really great to drive. Leg space in the back seems to be a big issue in the SUV 7 seat category
@@lovecarsTV I know, I have two older teenagers but not as old as your two :-)
Alan Dawson 😂
I'll take Volvo, the RX-L was a after thought, so obviously is gonna suck in the third roll. the new 2020 Highlander which the next generation of RX and RX-L are based on, only have slight improvement in third roll comfort, so don't expect too much on next gen RX-L.
Xc90 rear seats isn’t any better....only suitable for kids
@@Ilikepie18855 seating in xc90 is like being in first class cabin of Etihad vs, lexus which is United air line seat...Absolutely no comparison. You want class. Comfort and luxury, you go with Volvo.
@@meenam300zx we have both XC90 and RX350. RX is more like first class and XC90 is more like economy. Especially rear seats, can't recline as much, very hard, small, not very comfortable. RX on the other hand is spacious, very comfortable. Sleep so well
0:51 “first Lexus with 7 seats” didn’t the GX/Land cruiser have 3-rows?
We didn't get the GX in the UK.
Hi Jimmy. Thanks for this. The brain is a funny old thing. Very interesting reading and food for thought
Anybody else noticed how the wheels of the Volvo at that speed looks like they are standing still at 3:52 sek 😂
That's due to frame rate of their video camera.
You gonna love your Lexus when you take it to service and you get the bill. Volvo will empty your pockets just because it's a Volvo...
Lexus will need far fewer trips to the garage than any if its rivals I think, it will also outlast all the Germans
It takes only one major accidents and you wish you were in Volvo rather than hospital bed or wheel chair.
ZZ lexus has the highest ratings on crash tests....
Volvo and Swedish engineering all the way!
Urban legend volvo xc90 👍
I have had both cars and certainly the Volvo is better!
my old RX450Hybrid still runs perfect with 230000km and first battery and its 3,5ltr n/a engine in Atkinsoncycle runs still smooth and very depressing ! I doubt a turbo+supercharged little Lawnmower-engine will last that long ! ruclips.net/video/3bSB_TdBA8A/видео.html
Volvo! Volvo is just the best at building cars like this.
Loved the boot opening technique scene made gave me a real good belly laugh
Adj Rasta surely once you got to know the car they would have opened more efficiently but yes it was funny 👍
9:00 on hillarious!
The Volvo is a superb car and a true alternative to a Range Rover, the Lexus is a hideous thing that even a 50% discount wouldn't tempt me!
That’s a little harsh
@@lovecarsTV Harsh but true

Lexus are on the up.
All the other premium brands should watch out!
Volvo!
Love the RX tbh
Anyone test drove both? Which one has better ride comfort?
We have both and hands down love the xc90 it’s a level above Lexus and more room.
@@AT_PokemonTCG89 thank you
Bought the Lexus in Takumi trim saved over £18k against the Volvo to a similar specification and put the £18k towards an Audi S4 Avant V6 turbo petrol (not diesel, Audi what were you thinking!!!, best of both worlds achieved, tick.
The XC90 was £18k more? Viewed an XC90 and an RX Takumi straight after - straight away the RX felt far superior quality and went with that. Didn't bother enquiring on price for XC90, it was unimpressive.
Thumbs up for the air-time in a 7 seater 😂
Oh yes
Volvo all the way! But only with the 5-pot D5 engine, that's why I'm hanging on to my 2013 D5 XC60 until it dies .. then I'll buy a bicykle.
Ask Scotty...
The only thing wrong with the xc90 was the introduction of the touchscreen, it's horrid looking, unlike the rest of the interior. And it's terrible ergonomically,
Buttons will always be better.
