Darkest Hour's Gary Oldman Talks About Harrison Ford's Rule Breaking And Playing Winston Churchill

- We can’t believe British screen legend Gary Oldman hasn’t received a knighthood yet.
The man’s a genius, and most recently won the Best Actor - Drama gong at The Golden Globes 2018 for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. What an accolade.
In our latest episode of LADs On Film, he recounts the hilarious anarchic antics of Harrison Ford on the set of 1997 thriller Air Force One.
With the film’s aircraft set riddled with three signs reading no smoking/eating/drinking, Gary saw Harrison disobeying the rules - and it’s clear zero f*cks were given:
“One day when I looked around, he [Harrison] was standing in the doorway beneath the signs. He was drinking a coffee, eating a burrito and smoking a cigar.”
Harrison - you were one rule break away from an ASBO, sir.
According to Gary, that was his favourite moment on a film set. That would probably be topping our list too if we’d seen it.
Darkest Hour, starring Gary Oldman, hits UK cinemas on January 12.

Gary Oldman is one of the most talented actors ever to grace a screen. He's a true chameleon and often steals the show even in supporting roles in The Professional and The Fifth Element.
Amen!
I've always loved him in the Fifth Element
He has a terrible habit of spitting on his costars when rehearsing a line
Love how Oldman talks about fanboying over Michael Caine on The Dark Knight trilogy because Tom Hardy was fanboying over him at the same time
I like how he tells a funny story in a serious manner then laughs. His laugh is good.
Love his laugh
Already love Gary as an actor, and to see his humble disposition makes me love him all the more. Seems like a great guy.
I've always loved Gary Oldman, and I've always loved John Hurt. I never thought I'd hear either of them speak of the other. What a warm genuine nod Gary gave to John here. It moved me. My fondness for both has never seemed more accurately placed.
I saw between-the-takes footage from "Tinker, Tailor" and got quite confused to see Smiley grinning ear to ear and fanboying around Control like a star struck fan. lol Yeah Gary did love John.
John Hurt was in a fairly forgettable Warhammer 40K animated movie about 11 years ago along with about a dozen other famous and upcoming British actors. I recall watching the behind the scenes documentary and John Hurt seemed to just be having a blast playing this grizzled space marine. Hearing Gary Oldman talking about him here is truly heartwarming.
Gary Oldman is by far a supreme actor and SHOULD HAVE WON the Academy Award for this film! Much love and appreciation for ALL of his performances. Karen Bianchini, Chicago, Illinois.
Why are you changing camera angles every 4 seconds?! It's Gary Oldman not a car commercial.
tompaman
But we still have the desire to buy model the model on the lot!
;-)
tompaman it’s a trick to make the video seem more enjoyable than it is. That’s why they do it in movies
tompaman because today's youth have the concentration powers of a gnat and need constant visual pokes to keep viewing.
Which is over used by now.
thank you for also noticing it.
You don't need 'millenial zero-attention-span stutter-edit' when your subject matter is as good as this. that sort of stuff is used to speed otherwise-boring people up and to delete their 'umms and eeehs'. you don't need to spice up someone as articulate and compelling as Oldman.
Gary Oldman seems like such a gentleman. He never has a bad word for anyone, which is just great! Plus, he was good friends with Bowie and you don't get any cooler than that!
I know I'm not the only one thinking it: I love gary oldman's laugh
I love Gary Oldman's everything.
He tried to kill Harrison Ford.
Oscar doesn't deserve a Gary Oldman.
Amen!
Well said.
Oscars are too woke!
Gary Oldman is an acting legend ! He generally deserves a Oscar for his performance as Winston Churchill !
Gary Oldman-the consummate actor. A gentleman who adds more than simple acting to his films (remember Drexel from “True Romance?”) Along with Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken they took an average film and made it something outstanding. That says a lot about the distinction he brings to every role. Thanks Gary, for the great fun you’ve given us and good luck in every future endeavour!
As a man on the lowest rungs of the acting business , I’d very much like to work with Mr Oldman . Simply because he is not only a terrific actor , but also because he comes across as a genuine man . The short story about John Hurt , tells me a lot about him . The fact he refers to John Hurt as beautiful , says so much .
So many people focus on the negative side of life , full of anger and pessimism. That hearing such a lovely reference to John Hurt , made me sad that I missed the opportunity myself to work with him
I’ve worked with David Jason ,& despite the fact he’s not a celebrated film actor , his tv performances have marked him out as one of the UK’s treasured performers . And he himself , was an absolute delight .
Genius and generosity can sit side by side ,& still be able to produce good work & generate love & respect in equal measures .
I was an extra in his film The Space Between Us, shot mid-2015; got to hear him recite a speech about Mars over and over, like your own personal Gary Oldman theater performance. Hope he gets his long-deserved Oscar for Churchill.
Liar
Nope, he did it at the Spaceport in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico (shot the rest of the film in Albuquerque). Can even point out my bald-spot during the scene. That's life :)
Back in '94 after I had told my dad that I was going to see Léon (The Professional), he lit up when he saw that Gary Oldman was in it. He told me that he had seen Oldman on the set of Sid and Nancy back in the '80s and had been _blown_ _away_ by how good he had been.
Wow, that's just when he was starting out.
@@RollingOrmond lies
Favorite movie of all time is Bram Stoker's Dracula. Been a fan of this dude forever.
DarkStrikerSatanusRequiem "what devil or witch was ever so proud as Attila whose blood flows in these vains?"
I can't say it's my favourite film or even my favourite Dracula film but it's definitely my favourite portrayal of Dracula himself. I love the way Oldman delivers his 'children of the night' line (amongst many others).
Gary's worst film for me .leon the professional my fave
Staff H Dracula worst film my foot...???
Perhaps one of the greatest living actors of our time. His range of characters is simply mind boggling.
I think he’s the best living actor.
The greatest! No contest!
If there's a film, and it either has Ford or Oldman, I'll watch it. No questions asked.
..and everyone I've ever heard speak of meeting John Hurt says the exact same thing. One of those guys you won't find anyone has a bad word about.
A very underrated actor! Gary Oldman is a favorite of mine alongside Harrison Ford!
"We can’t believe British screen legend Gary Oldman hasn’t received a knighthood yet." FUCKING TRUE!!!
Just like John Hurt. Gary is one of the most underrated actors in the world. I will never forget him playing Drexel.
Before i even knew Mr Oldman idolised John Hurt i always was reminded of John Hurt when I watched Gary. Funny that.
Love him - what a great self-deprecating sense of humor. You can tell he counts himself lucky, bet he's never taken a day for granted.
I've been a fan of Gary's for years and actually laughed and grinned when I saw him get the role of Gordon in Batman Begins. He was always so talented in his prior films and now being in a big budget film with widespread attention like a Batman film was just amazing and I was happy for him.
Great actor/film star,a true master of his craft,so deserves an " Oscar " for " Darkest Hour " as Winston Churchill.
Finally won. Long overdue
I have fallen in love with this actor ,he is so down to earth and honest, would love to meet him one day.👏👌😉
The fact that my favorite actor of all time picked my other favorite, John Hurt, a brilliant class act, as someone he greatly admired makes me love Oldman even more. 👍❤️
Gary Oldman is the ONLY actor whom I can't recognize he being in any movies. I mean, he's so into his characters that he completely erases his true, own self-identity. I believe I've seen most of the movies he performed but I can never recognize him as Gary Oldman from any of those.
He's the true actor.
It’s always easy to describe things of beauty. One of the very best Character Actors is Gary Oldman💐💚👏🏼🇦🇺
Been a fan since probably the 80s, what cemented my Fandom was when I saw him and Tim Roth (way underappreciated actor) in Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead......
It's my opinion that Gary Oldman is one of if not the greatest actor there has ever been. It's dizzying to think about how many completely different roles he's portrayed to absolute perfection.
I’ve admired Gary Oldman in almost everything I’ve seen him in, but I was blown away watching his performance in Darkest Hour.
Give him an Oscar, is the decent thing to do Hollywood.
Harrison drinking eating and smoking beneath the sign is an all time boss move.
I like to think that if the sign had said 'no fucking' and Ally McBeal had been there ... well, you know.
Narcissistic move would be more on point.
@@angelwingz892 How is it narcissistic?
Gary Oldman is up there with the absolute greats in the 20th century. I couldn't get over the absolute wonderful job he did in "the darkest hour"wow! I couldn't believe it was him!!!
I have loved Oldmans films for some time. Im not sure I have seen a film that he was not 100%, even if the film itself was not.
Darkest hour has to be his absolutely best work for me. Mostly I think, because I know the story behind the how, what and who Churchill was, and Chamberlain, and house etc, I knew the story fairly well, and I have always imagined how churchill would have been... So when I saw Oldman playing the part, it was EXACTLY as I have always imagined Churchill to be.
Brilliant!
I've watched him for decades. I'll never forget that I didn't even realize he was playing Jim Gordon until halfway through the movie.
Literally. I still can't believe he's in Harry Potter, I remember reading his name like 5 years after Prisoner of Azkaban and clocked he was Sirius Black. Don't think I know any other actor who is as disguised as him
Also, he's Little Mo's brother (I think half) from EastEnders 🤣
I love the way he laughs after talking about harrison ford. It tickled me lol
Enlightening and inspiring. Thank you, Gary.
How amazing to enjoy the works of such a talented human being.
He came into my Wigan college drama lesson in January 1987. I spoke to him about drama schools for 20 mins over a cup of tea
He is just magnificent!
Totally agree with the description of this vid. He is easily one of the finest screen actors ever to live.
I love how Lord Shen is so down to earth💜
From my perspective as a blue collar worker living in north Mississippi you are in a league of actors far beyond those you idolized.
Michael Caine is in my top ten. You however are in my top five.
Love your work.
Darkest Hour is one of the best films I have seen for a long time, beats Dunkirk on every level. Good luck at the Oscars, Gary.
I'll never understand how he can turn his accent on and off at will. Incredible actor.
He actually had to re-learn how to talk with a British accent after having done so many roles featuring other accents.
@@karadan100 Interesting. Makes sense.
A marvelous actor!
My two favorites of his are Immortal Beloved (Beethoven) and Darkest Hour.
I have admired Gary Oldman for many years since seeing him in a movie of long ago called “Prick Up Your Ears”. His performance in “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” was powerful and masterful and one that will certainly stand the test of time.
He’s a brilliant actor, but listening to him talk about others makes me realize that Oldman’s also a wonderful human being.
Complete genius, the Oscar was waaaaay overdue
Long overdue
I just Gary Oldman! One of my favorite actors. SO talented!
What a great actor. When I first saw an interview with him I was completely floored. He's always an ass in movies but then he gets on an interview and he's English! Completely different person in all ways. I wish I made movies because he would be first choice in every one, if he was willing. I'll always be a fan, "Scary" Gary!
There is no finer actor than Gary Oldman, and I'm including Laurence Olivier, Robert DeNiro, Thomas Mitchell, Pacino, the Barrymores, Brando, Meryl Streep and just about anyone else you can name. The man is a chameleon - incredibly talented. My three favorite roles he's done are as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK, and Jackie Flannery in State of Grace.
However, I will add that one up-and-coming guy I'm also very impressed with is Stephen Graham.
Gary, it was one of the best performances I've seen in film. Fucking awesome. I had a cigar while shoveling all night tonight lol.
Peace
I'll always have a soft spot for Gary's portrayal of the shadiest cop probably ever put so convincingly on film, in Leon.
I don't know any actor that could have portrayed Winston Churchill, our National hero in a better way.
I love the film and have watched it half a dozen times.
Thanks Gary.
He played an excellent Sid Vicious in 'Sid and Nancey' (the first movie l saw him in), but "Dracula' is probably his role, that movie is now a real classic.
Love gary such an amazing actor..he can be anyone..which is wonderful..x
Oldman. An excellent actor. I enjoy your work.
Mr. Oldman, you yourself are an amazing actor, as much as, if not better than your heroes. Thank you for your dedication to your craft and bringing to life many unforgettable characters! Break a leg! ❤️❤️👍👍👊👊👊👊👊👊
I love his work. Everything he does he gives a hundred percent. A joy to watch. Especially Dracula.
Such a gracious performer.
One of the best acting of Gary Oldman. The movie is superb.
Wow one of my favorite actors, shit he is so good I had no idea he had an English accent / I feel real stupid now BUT, Gary Oldman is fantastic actor / loved his role in The Proffesional
The three people in my life I'd love to have a beer with: Elvis, Pete Rose, Gary Oldman
Elvis was a nonce tho....
Very under rated actor...needs an award..xx
It's almost impossible to believe he played bad characters in movies, like in air force one. (classic Harrison Ford on set, doing what you are not supposed to do lol...)
sandra db Then you should watch him in Léon (The Professional), his crazy Southern-accented Space criminal in Fifth Element, and his brief- but almost Oscar worthy turn in True Romance.
Gary Oldman and John Hurt. Last of the great Brit character actors.Hard to believe but for Oldman the best is yet to come.
Vespasion1 and Sir Anthony Hopkins
A genius first class love his work
"As long as he lives the heart of this army cannot be broken!"
Anyone else detect the faintest little whisper of a quivering lip while he was talking about John Hurt's last hours?
I didn't know that John Hurt was supposed to be in Darkest Hour. I see that he was meant to play Neville Chamberlain. Sad story.
The great actor Gary Oldman 3.02 speaks about the great actor John Hurt. .
he seems like such a chill genius 😎
Gary Oldman is is one of the greats actors of his time. I feel.
I'm American, and in my opinion, Gary Oldman is the worldest greatest actor.
This guy rocks with the best of them
Harrison Ford seems wonderful fun and engaging when he's working. His interviews tend to be just alright.
One of my favourite actors.
One of the most versatile actors in the business.
I do love that when he first mentions Michael Caine he starts to slip into his accent, and has to correct himself before it becomes more apparent
Well, when Gary puts it like that with the cigars - I have to see this movie. He worked hard on it.
Hurt......1st film...the best.... " A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS "..PERFECT
The way this is cut makes him jump around the screen! Nicer to treat as a podcast and scroll the image away!
Given how Gary described Harrison literally doing the opposite of all 3 signs under em, it sounds like Harrison was actually having fun doing that movie.
I love Gary.
Gary Oldman, as Radek, is a real genius!!!
Love the interview and opening quote, but why do you keep cutting every 3 seconds back and forth between the frontal and side angle? They're both essentially the same shot in terms of frame size, so the side angle doesn't really add anything. Why not go for a slightly wider frontal shot for more physical moments of the interview, and a tighter close up to cut to for more emotional/insightful/etc moments. As is, the cutting just distracted me from the interview itself.
I agree with the needless use of showing Gary Oldman at different angles every 5 seconds, very irritating. Did like the interview though.
You gotta love that story of Harrison Ford
John Hurts chemo probably destroyed his leg bone. It happens to many cancer patients.
IF HE DOESN'T GET AN AWARD & ACKNOWLEDGED THIS TIME AROUND....IT'S FIXED, PERIOD !
LON CHANEY IS KNOWN AS "THE MAN OF A THOUSAND FACES".
GARY OLDMAN IS A "THE MAN OF A THOUSAND CHARACTERS".
ANYBODY SEE, 'NOBODY'S BABY' ?
I COULDN'T BELIEVE GARY WAS IN IT UNTIL I READ THE CREDITS.
SILLY MOVIE BUT IT WAS FUNNY, IF YOU LET GO.
PLUS, HE PLAYED A PART OF THE SCARRED MAN ON THE HANNIBAL LECTER TRILOGY ? 2 CENTS
He seems like the kind of person (pretty much the only one there is) who would actually find getting a colonoscopy in Christmas time just a perfect and interesting time.
I hope Francis Coppola could make Dracula 2 in the same manner no special effects ,nothing, just Gary Oldman held loose at the screen.
Big fan
"Will you stop interrupting me while I'm trying to interrupt you?!"
I died right then and there...
You got it wrong. It's not "while I'm trying to interrupt you," it's "while I'm interrupting you." Huge difference. lol
He seriously needs an oscar!
Only attention starved, pretentious and needy libtard actors need Oscars, he doesn't...he's not insecure!
He has one now. Watching the interviews right after the win I think he had always quietly wanted it for a long time as a formal recognition from the industry. The only way to convince the Academy was bringing the famous chameleon skills, his "thing," up to eleven and he did it brilliantly. Congrats Gary
Why was he using the words ‘My Cocaine’ ?
...It's Michael Caine.
oh my god
Your not! serious.
LoveDat65 You're *
Oh' pardon me. You are not serious? And it is Michael Caine, not My Cocaine - Mr Pedantic Spelling Policeman.
He’s too nice. Can’t be real. Like a calm moment before the storm.
Wow , from one of the best actors alive today.
