I would dare say even the majority of high school students today have at least know that Churchill was someone important.

      Sykeye S -
      "Why are all British actors so damn talented...."
      I think PART of the answer accounts also for why we are SO good at War, and why we have invented SO many sports (among other things):
      A natural Sense of Playfulness (and Adventure) in our national character (which in turn also explains our love of Humour and *word-play* , the latter dating back to Saxon times).
      Just some random thoughts...............................

      Don't get too cocky.
      Only the Shakespeare theatre training (at school) is the main power.
      The English were actually not good in war.... on THEIR OWN..against POTENT enemies.
      The English were good in forging alliances , and make their partners TAKE THE FIRST SHOTS before arriving LAST on the battlefield...(from the Wars of succession in 1700's , thru the Napoleons, WW1 til WW2...check it).
      And the Empire building came from conquering third rate technologically underrated foreign kingdoms..and overrunning colonial settlements when they were at their weakest while the brits had theirs prepared in a kindof "blitz" attack if you will...
      And the Inventing most Sports thing is also...a nay.
      But once HAVINg a stretched Empire OF COURSE leads to vast acceptance of all kinds of accepted sports.

    • @LittleB2007
      @LittleB2007 6 лет назад +14

      Lithgow is not better, it's just you prefer him to Oldman. That's totally okay. But even Churchill scholars and family members say Oldman is the only actor who nailed the true spirit and human side of the guy.

    • @vigfuseiriksson4550
      @vigfuseiriksson4550 6 лет назад

      I have not seen more praise for Oldman than I saw for Lithgow from either of the sources you mention. And, having read all of Sir Winston's work as well as listened to the extant speeches, I have to say that Lithgow's depiction nails the spirit and general presence of the man, while Oldman overdramatizes, speaks in a tone of voice and cadence which Sir Winston never, ever used, and generally lacks the quintessential feel of soppy bulldog the man exuded.
      True, I am not privvy to knowing what he was like in private, but I dare say the accuracy of Lithgow's portrayal of the public persona over Oldman's, is not disputable.

      Justin Dieterich I was impressed with both Jarred Harris (The Crown) and James Purefoys (Churchill) take on Elizabeth II father. Both roles were emotionally engaging, I prefer them more than Collin Firths take on him to be honest.

    • @angelacarleton9575
      @angelacarleton9575 6 лет назад +6

      I was hoping to see King George VI's stutter but wish Colin Firth was there instead. However, it would have taken something away from the part for Gary Oldman as Churchill. After all Colin Firth has such presence. All actors including Colin Firth admires Gary Goldman for his chameleon talent to submerge himself so thoroughly he is unrecognizable. He is amazing! I personally feel Gary Oldman if nominated will win the "Oscar."

    Two important notes worth remembering about Winston Churchill. The first was that his mother, whose maiden name was Jennie Jerome, was an American lady, born in New York.
    I am convinced that her genes contributed to Winston’s energy.
    The second note is that almost as soon as Winston became a Member of Parliament, he went to have a suit ‘built’ for him by Henry Poole, Tailors in Savile Row even though he could hardly afford to! He felt he had to look the part!
    Gary Oldman, whose portrayal of Winston was simply brilliant, wore a suit especially ‘built’ for him by Henry Poole which was identical to Winston’s original one! It was even made of the same cloth!

    • @davidgray3321
      @davidgray3321 5 месяцев назад

      I don’t think energy was the key ingredient, what his mother gave him was freedom from the self consciousness and restraint that some British people suffer from, he was seen as pushy and he didn’t care. She also introduced him to many American politicians who were great orators, and all that moulded him considerably. Thank god for his mother, also she used her looks to help him on, every man in London was pleased to help, just for a smile, let alone more. A great lady. He is without question the greatest Anglo American that will or did ever live. And the greatest Britain of our history.

    My personal favorite scene in Darkest Hour is the phone conversation with FDR regarding delivery of fighter aircraft and the fact that the Brits had to come, literally, push the aircraft over the Canadian border for delivery. Mr. Oldman perfectly captured Churchill's desperate astonishment at the absolute absurdity of the situation which was just one small piece of a much larger, much more desperate and, one could say, vastly more absurd situation going on all around him in that moment.

      @@prltqdf9 I never liked this sentence, you need to define hard and soft times and hard and soft people for it to make sense. It seems to be a warmonger sentence, you want endless wars so fell strong? misery doesn't breed"strong" people, only people with issues. If someone is tired of their easy life and feel soft you can always go to another part of the world where they are having hard times.

    Excellent film, excellent Oldman. When I first heard about the casting I thought this isn’t going to work but I completely agree a new benchmark was reached. Kristen Scott Thomas was excellent too. Up there with the best Albert Finney and Robert Hardy. Also makes one pine for politicians who listened to their people.
