I’ve come to enjoy it more over the years, but I’ve always disliked dream scenes/episodes. I don’t like them in books either. One of the main reasons I always disliked Bran’s chapters in the GoT books & series.

Good now this is out of the way, we can get to the real season finale. I know lots don’t see it that way with Adam, but to me this season villain was more abstract and was the struggle with keeping the group together as each character enters a new stage of their life. The next episode really sums up their seasons journey. What they fear, what is important to them, their strengths and what they struggle with separately.
I agree with you about the villain being more abstract this season. Not only was the struggle to keep the group together the central conflict within season four, Adam is doing things according to his nature and is a product of Maggie Walsh/the US government which I view more villainous than him this season.
Yep. This season was really about growing up and learning to be adults and communicate while you grow and change.
Love the fact you guys figured out that the spell was maybe a little too powerful for the scoobies and would have repercussions.. very smart! ;)

even if theres no repercussions (i think there will be) the spell still took specific components, 5 minutes to cast, and they seem to still need to be relatively close to buffy and cant move, leaving them very vulnerable targets, like if a demon had broken in to that room while they were casting it, or even while buffy was fighting adam, it couldve easily killed them
Hence, they spared Spike after he saved them.

Restless is next. My favorite episode of the entire series. It will not make any sense at the time but it is foreshadowing the entire rest of the series. It is also the most realistic interpretation of how dreams actually are ever put on film.
Ever? I'm sure there are some other trippy & surreal David Lynch type films out there that make way less sense.
@@jp3813 it is not about it being trippy, it is about how their minds are using dreams to make sense of how they feel about many things in real life even random things or unresolved trauma. It even transitions from environment to environment like how it actually occurs in dreams. Dreams are always trippy it is not about that. Trippy is easy. This actually has the structure, layout, and meaning behind everything that is happening in the dream which makes it the most accurate interpretation of how real dreams tend to be. Dreams make sense when we are in them. They only seem odd when we wake up.
@@AFCompany The characters seem to be confused most of the time in their own dreams. Perhaps different people dream differently, but for many, dreams generally have little-to-no structure, layout, or meaning.

Season 4 was one of the more fragmented seaons but Season 5 is one of the most cohesive seasons the show ever had.

Willow's enjoining spell temporarily blends herself, Buffy, Giles and Xander into a being with the powers and knowledge needed to destroy Adam after an intense fight.
Whenever Buffy gets those yellow eyes, I for some reason think she’s going to do the thriller dance lol

Hey guys, Rana hit the nail right on the head there - they did all merge with Buffy, that's what the spell was for. It was to combine each of their talents that was required to kill Adam. Xander for his military knowledge, Giles for his Ancient Sumerian language, Willow for her pure witchly power, and Buffy for the obvious Slayer strength. Each represents a part of Buffy herself, actually: Giles for her metaphorical mind, Xander for her heart, Willow for her spirit, Buffy herself as "the hand", i.e. the body, physicality of herself. But what you have to remember is that the power of the Slayer is not Buffy's alone; it passes from girl to girl, generation to generation. So when Rana said they may have messed with a power they do not understand, she was right. You'll find this out in the next episode though, so looking forward to it!
Totally agree with what you said here except for one thing: I don't think Xander was there for his military knowledge. Like you said, he was the Heart, so I think his role in this spell was to keep Uber-Buffy grounded. A super-powerful being like that, with all the strength, magic and knowledge, well, they're bound to have some ego problem, think themselves to be a god or something. I think Xander was in there to prevent that, to keep the humanity of this god-like being they became.
I mean, it's just a theory really, they never really stated the purpose of Xander within Uber-Buffy, outside of being "the heart". Your theory is as good as mine, but I kinda prefer mine better, no offense! :p

Of course the group had be be close to be able to channel & I can also see the point where each member represents a strength such as Xander being the heart, did not think of it before.

1. The idea of vampires running a blood donation van has been done at least once. The show "My Babysitter's a Vampire".
2. Jonathan Levinson cast the Superstar spell earlier in this season. While he was a Mary Sue, he identified Adam's weak point. The magic of this nerd helped defeat the Big Bad.
3. Best episode of the show next week, less go!

Apparently the elevator shaft set they are repelling down was REALLY small, thats why you barley see them moving LOL they had to keep resetting back at the top and continuing their lines

The scoobies were speaking in riddle during the spell , but basically, they were calling upon the power of THE SLAYER ( as in the ones that came before) that’s why Buffy said « we are forever » while in trance.
You can absolutely tell this episode came directly after the decade that had both The Terminator 2 and the Matrix 😂

@@bernardsoul5186 Although it took forever for SAG-AFTRA to get back to them, Blind Wave received guidance from them. They essentially said that reacting to old TV series is okay, which is very different from the conclusions that most reactors came to, from the original guidance for union members. So it's all gucci.

S4 was always going to be slightly difficult because The High School years were over, and the show had to find a new direction. Overall I felt it was disappointing compared to other Seasons and felt somewhat disjointed. Adam, even wasn't really a 'Big Bad' compared with the arc of other seasons. That being said, this was an entertaining episode with the big fight towards the end reminiscent of a Bond Film, with lots of people in a massive big fight in a complex with all sorts of weapons etc, but as you said in your Angel Sanctuary episode bullets flying everywhere but nobody getting hit! We see Willow again gaining amazing power, and being able to transfer to Buffy to make her invincible, there were shades here of The Matrix with the slow motion shots and the strange deflection of Adam's attacks. Riley shows great courage to remove the chip from his chest, and when Buffy pulls out Adam's power source we get a great sense of satisfaction. Once again we have an X-FILES type ending where the covert government men discussing closing down The Initiative could easily be Cancer Man, Assistant Director Skinner as a closing X-FILES scene. Don't worry about E22 finale for S4 It's very different, but an essential episode going forward.
I was even more curious than usual if they would wonder what the next episode would be considering how this one ended.
Professor Walsh didn't give Adam control of anything. Adam just took control of Professor Walsh's evil plan, which was going to be her plan before the actor decided to leave and they writers then turned Adam into the overall villain. Personally I like it better that way, as you get Walsh then Adam as villains rather than Walsh then Walsh and Adam.
Mickey? What does Adam thinking humans being "hopeless with technology" have to do with Adam having a floppy disk drive in his chest?
If you think about it, Spike helped the group by causing the fight between them. If he didn't they would've been in denial until things got so bad things couldn't be fixed. Spike causing problems made thm go "oh" as well as realize "trouble was stirupable" to the point where Spike didn't really do anything much to cause it. It was brewing sing 4x01. The trouble of keeping the high school group together as you go through college is a very real issue this season handled well.
There are stairs, but Buffy's never used them and considering it's a secret base they wouldn't be noticablly out in the open. She knows the elevator enterance.
"Must See TV" would have been a laugh out loud joke during the initial airing as a hit against NBC.
_Cabin in the Woods_ was both Joss Whedon and another Buffyverse writer by the name of Drew Goddard, who didn't start writing until _Buffy the Vampire Slayer_ season seven befiore going over to _Angel_ season 5.
I've heard people ask why doesn't Spike remove the chip the way Riley did. Riley's Behavior modifier chip is tied into his central nervous system through the thoracic nerve (the cluster of nerve fibers found in the upper body, particularly within the chest region). Spike's Behavior-modification circuitry chip was tied into his brain (therefore more dangerous to remove and impossible to do the way Riley did without brain damage, even among the undead). Riley's was an update to Spike's as Walsh asked Riley if Spike's worked. So Spike's was a trial run for Riley's, which I believe was installed after Spike's, but before Walsh died.
Adam's power source is exactly what Jonathan said it would be in the episode _Superstar._
This episode aired just after _The Matrix._ It wasn't intentional on Joss's part to do so with that moment, but he didn't write or direct the episode. Showing he didn't control everything on the show.
I like the fact that Rana liked this season because it is an under-rated season due to The Initiative storyline.

hi guys. I'm watch a Argentian show "Los 8 escalones de los 3 millones", on Canal 13, of the day 31/08 and the girl in the final looks like a younger Marketta.
Human blood is human blood - when spike was staying at Giles’ place, he would drink it out of a cup - and I think he would even put it in the microwave to make it warm. The thing that he says is gross is drinking pig’s blood like Angel does.
For next episode I highly recommend getting out the pen and paper it’s really complex and a lot won’t make sense for a while but always refer back to it.
Homie in the banana shirt is correct. They shouldn't have tampered with that...but you will find out next episode...Restless.

Lindsay Crouse came back because she was never cut off, she was hired for exactly the number of episodes that she was in. They knew when they cast her that they only had access to her for a limited number of episodes so the plan was always to kill her off as early as they did, every talk about her quitting or being thrown out is just unsubstantiated fan theories.
Doug Petrie who was the produced for season 4: "It's very much a Frankenstein story wherein someone creates a monster and then the monster is out of their control. That's what this was. We knew from the beginning that Maggie Walsh was going to be killed by her own creation. Then we got Lindsay Crouse, the great Lindsay Crouse. This is the episode where sadly she shines the most and this is her best episode. As often happens, just when things really start cooking, they've got to go. She's one of the bigger names that we've gotten on the show and we know that we had her for a limited time, so there was a practical consideration as well. It's very much in the vein of Frankenstein's monster and we felt it essential that the first thing the monster do is kill its creator - to hand over the baton as it were and give someone else the villain's mantle for season four."
It's possible that earlier plans before casting was done had a longer arc for Dr. Walsh and this is the origin of the fan theories, but all that changed when she was cast.
Thank you! It drives me crazy that so many people parrot the same unsubstantiated rumours without looking into the actual facts of the situation for themselves. And it happens *every time* without fail.
Funny that you mention the Guardians of the Galaxy, since it seems very likely to me that some of this storyline was inspired by the same comic books as Guardians 3. Like an artificial guy called Adam who turns against his creator.

I was kinda iffy on this season, but I love this episode and next episode is even better.
I love buffy in general, but season 5 is the absolute best for me. Best villain, best supporting cast, you'll have lots of fun. You'll cry you'll laugh, it's very buffy.

Not shocked at all that Rena finds this season to be her #1. Recency bias or not, it tracks. She, hell ALL of them loved or enjoyed all of Season 1 😂 Ofcourse they would find one of the more mid seasons as their fav.
I’ve grown to appreciate it and enjoy the college theme and certain FIRE episodes, but as a season over all, it’s still pretty mid in comparison to Seasons 2, 3, 5, and 6

s2 may have a stronger arc but has more mid episodes than s4. also s6 is a divisive season among fandom, understandably so bc it’s quite messy

Mickey's theories of best job for a vampire made me think of Sam Witwer's vampire role and job as a nightshift nurse in Being Human. Think the Buffy/Angel crew would like that series alot as another fun supernatural show down the road and a chance to watch Sam Witwer perform in live action
