The movie reveals that he is a former Defense Intelligence agent (DIA). The second movie goes into more detail about the DIA. He's old enough to be living off of his pension, but DIA also get "danger pay" bonuses like any other military related profession. So, he probably has a massive fortune to live off of on top of his pension for all of the danger pay bonuses he collected over the years. Yet, he still lives modestly and efficiently like the soldier he will always be.
If you haven't seen Denzel in 'Flight', you really should. It's about a pilot dealing with an air disaster and how they handled it. Denzel is a flawed but super-charismatic character. I think you'll love it if you liked 'Training Day'.
@Dayspring oh god u people can't go a day in your lives without having to be seen, everyone just block and ignore these people, they love being wrong so they can feel good about it
That shot in 36:56 he looks like Michael Myers standing there someone tell Michael, Denzel is stealing his thing lol Michael's like "Hey man I was here first."
Watching Nikki and steven reacting to these movies is like watching a movie with a couple of friends. Their style of reaction does not disturb the flow of the movies, too.
That first verbal showdown between them is insane. They both know, yet neither one can say yet. Both are at the top of their game... Teddy just doesn't realize that his top game is WAY short. Straight admitting he was there that night throws him. Being reminded to leave his card throws him. He did good. Most wouldn't have caught those. LOVE this movie. The tension is incredible. And how he is protrayed to everyone else as calm, mild mannered, always helping anyone... and then his utterly brutal and rapid takedown of anyone who gets in the way of someone he wants to help... it's amazing. And the 2nd one really builds on it and gives some backstory to him. Also has some of the best scenes. I love that they highlight his observational skills. Notice everything all at once. Anything can be a weapon, use whatever you have at hand. Speed and overwhelming force. Fun fact, honey is great for disinfecting wounds. Has antimicrobial and antibiotic properties. Specific type though, not just any. So that was a really cool and accurate little scene. Also, honey never goes bad.
I always run all of Denzel’s characters together: he was a pip then a football coach then got arrested getting his son a new heart by holding a hospital hostage then got out of jail and lived a hard life of Training Day then he equalized. Afterwards he tried to pull his life together and became a bodyguard for a little girl and died. 😂 You guys should watch “The Equalizer 2” AND “Haywire”
This based off the 80's series The Equalizer as a child of the 80s my father and I loved the show. Difference McCall was a former british spy in New York helping ppl
Actually, she says he didn't come for help, he came for permission. I have a problem with that line, which doesn't make a lot of sense in context. Robert DID come to get her help in identifying this brutal villain and his associations, so that he can decide how to exact revenge and more. She gives him some psychological boost as well, and provides information that helps him justify doing what he's about to do. So maybe that's a stretch of the word permission.
@@DanishSatkut That makes sense, and I hadn't thought of it that way. But he definitely needed help as well. She provided him with info on the thug who was his adversary, and that was crucial intel.
@@surfwriter8461 I think that Robert wanted her to give him the permission to go back to the old Robert that he promised his wife he wouldn't. There could be the context like what you said about knowing what to go after, or even if there is some reason the agency wouldn't want him to. The info she got could have been just her being informed on if there were any issues with going after them. There is a lot of misdirection in the scene. When she says she doesn't have a lot of influence and then is dropped of by a marine helicopter, that's even more influential than having a driver.
The best part in this movie is that Robert is never scared, panicked or angry. Even for a second. He is just so sure of his skills and of what he is doing it's freezing my blood. Awesome. Also guys - watch "The Magnificent Seven" with him. The same director as here, Ethan Hawke from "Training Day" is in it too. It's great.
I cannot believe it either that it's taken you so long to watch 'The Equalizer' (2014), but nevertheless, I'm so glad you hadn't now, because it was so much fun watching your reactions, I enjoyed re-watching it again with you guys and liked you enjoyed this vigilante story, his OCD and his special skills in exterminating the enemy and you're right, the kills were unique. Denzel is one of my favourite actors, I just LOVE him in every film he does. Not sure if you've seen these two, but you may enjoy reacting to "Safe House" and "Inside Man" as well. Nikki you made me laugh when you shouted "With a book b**** with a book, with a *bleep n* book." One of the best lines of the movie was when 'Robert McCall'/'The Equalizer' said "When you pray for the rain you've got to deal with the mud too" - I agree with you Nikki, "WORD". Next best line when 'Robert McCall'/'The Equalizer' tells 'Nicolai "Teddy" Itchenko' after interrupting his meal at the table in the restaurant about the promise he made to someone he loved very much that he wouldn't go back to being that person he wasn't proud of and proceeds to tell him "but for you I'm gonna make an exception" - SCARY when a man like 'The Equalizer' tells you those words, you better believe him! I absolutely loved this whole restaurant scene with 'McCall' telling the story of the little Russian kid, showing 'Nicolai' he'd done his research on him, but implied in a subtle way etc etc. Yep the chills in this movie and the next are real Steve', but LOVE and laughed so hard when you said "Home Alone the Adult Edition".😂🤣🤣🤣 Once again, a GREAT reaction as ALWAYS!
The Equalizer started as an action/crime drama series from the 1980a. The original Robert McCarll was a former British commando recruited to be a "problem solver" for British Intelligence. His specialty as an agent was making it look like an accident. When he retired, he started helping people who couldn't otherwise get help, offering to "equalize" the situation. The storylines in the show often dealt with civilians who were up against gang members, or the mafia, or corrupt cops, and so on.
Please watch the sequel. I hear there's a part three coming out. I love Denzel. I would literally pay to watch him walk back and forth across the screen.
Just a note: Robert is so precise on his daily routine that is shown in his apartment, clean and organized, something he does daily, then why would he need an alarm clock? After 12 years in the Marine Corps, I wake up at 4:30 am every morning, without an alarm clock.
That first fight with the corkscrew is one of the most effective scenes ever for establishing your main character as someone to absolutely not be fucked with under any circumstances, incredible movie.
I can't believe you guys haven't seen this movie in 2014 but I'm glad you guys reacted to it. I can't wait for your Equalizer 2 reaction. Antione Fuqua, who directed Training Day, also directed the Equalizer movies.
I saw that movie when it came out and I loved it. Happy you picked up on this! Looking forward to your reaction to the second part. Have you seen "Book of Eli" (2010)? A dystopian endtime movie with Denzel and Garry Oldman, AMAZING! You will love it.
Remember seeing this movie with my now Wife… Back in 2013 that December we got a screening of it. And I decided to review it… I’m surprised Sony never caught it and tried to take it down. But man my comments were on fire, You didn’t really see it your just saying this for views and BS like that. The movie turned out the exact same as I stated it would! 😂 Great reactions Guys! PS this movie came out half a year later in September of 2014, not bad for a 10 Month head start 😅
If you ever get the chance to see some of the behind the scenes about the fight coordination, it’s worth your time. It really demonstrates how military special ops weaponize observation, it’s not just about noticing things others don’t, they catalog, categorize and activate everything and everyone around them so they can be precision weapons with whatever is at hand. So much so, that they don’t feel they need to have or use traditional weapons and can predict outcomes at an exceptionally high percentage.
Just to make note of it... the girl he is helping in the central storyline is Chloe-Grace Moretz from Kick Ass, 300 Days of Summer, and recently The Peripheral on Prime Video.
I LOVE your reactions! I have watched this reaction of the equalizer at least 4 times now. The interaction between the two of you and the way you select certain scenes and pause to comment is awesome. Thank you for that. I see far too many reactions where the reactor talks over all the good stuff. It seems they just like to hear themselves talk.
😭😭😭😭😭😭 The director of Man On Fire was Tony Scott (brother of Ridley) who sadly committed suicide in 2012. That was 2 years before The Equalizer was released. It was directed by Antoine Fuqua whose most recognizable film is Training Day (also Denzel). Man On Fire was the first Denzel/Tony Scott film collaboration of several ending with Tony's last film Unstoppable in 2010. Ironically Antoine Fuqua was also considered for the 2004 Man On Fire before Tony Scott was hired having been passed up for directing the original 1987 Man On Fire adaptation due to a perceived lack of experience by the producers.
My ex girlfriend (from well over a decade ago) had the same feeling about Training Day, and it even terrified her of Denzel. I had her watch Man on Fire after Training Day, and everything was OK again haha. I also always have had it in my head this is a stealthly sequel to Man on Fire (and the trailers for the third entry basically do everything they can to make it true).
For me, the movie he makes me flash to is "American Gangster." Smooth dude, no excuses, takes charge but in a horrible business...except he's a good guy in this one. I loved that the song that started when the hostages were in the Home Depot was "Midnight Train To Georgia" by Gladys Knight and the Pips. The Equalizer Pip was in the house!!
My opinion is: of all of them, Bob is the most badass. Never wears a body armor and never even bothers to bring a gun. He almost always goes unarmed and kills everyone either with their own weapons or things he finds along the way. Even that isn’t enough of a challenge so he tries to predict how many SECONDS it’ll take him to kill EVERYONE.
So happy you watched this movie, I hope you will watch the second movie too, Denzel Washington is such a good actor. The 3rd movie is coming out soon also, so excited for this.
Great reaction 😂 one of my favorite TV shows growing up. My best memories are how the Equalizer changed the life of the people he helped. Denzel is just….Denzel
Steven Denzel's character, Robert McCall was an agent for I believe, CIA. While Edward Woodward's McCall was same in 80's TV's version. Even though, Edward's McCall worked for the "Company". "Company" is usually in reference to CIA. Rapper and actress, Queen Latifah returned as McCall in new TV's version.
Denzel has soo many movies and they all are amazing! Top are Malcom X, Remember the Titans, A Soldier Story, Flight, American Gangster which is superb, Safe House, Glory, Devil in a Blue Dress, Crimson Tide, Inside Man, Hurricane, Safe House, The Preachers Wife, The Taking of Pelham 123, John Q, Man on Fire, The Bone Collector, The Book of Eli and many more lol
I just watched the movie on cable TV so now I'm watching your reaction. I didn't pick this up the first time but just now I noticed that Denzel says how are you going to carry me out of a burning building if you can't even pull this tire and, spoiler alert, the kid ends up rescuing Denzel and pulling him out of a building. Foreshadowing.
Robert McCall was a highly decorated Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, as indicated by the uniform in his home and then he became a black ops operative for the DIA where he met and became partner and team leader of Dave York for 7 years and became good friends with Susan.
Am I the only one who wants to see a John Wick, Equalizer, and Nobody crossover?!?! I want those three to meet up somehow and go EPICALLY BIBLICAL on some bad bad dudes....just saying!!!
I seriously love you guys, and seeing you enjoy a movie that I love is a special experience. It’s like you’re my soul buddies with all the same appreciations. If you’re after a great Denzil film from a while back Fallen is amazing. All the best from your uk fan club ❤️
I used to love the series with Edward Woodward, whose previous character of any note close to Robert McCall was probably British TV series Callan. When Mr. Washington took this on, in the wake of Man on Fire, I guessed it might be pretty good.
Robert McCall, in this version of the character he works for "The Agency", which is what they call the C.I.A. (Central Intelligence Agency) great reaction, this is Denzel 1st movie were he does a Sequel, well actually he's signed up for a 3rd one as well, anything Liam Neeson can do 😁👊
The original equalizer was a cbs show in the 70s with an older white man answering ads of people needing help in the news paper (can't remember the British actor's name who played him, but it was very successful). After Denzel's two amazing movies, it's now the Q Latifa cbs show.
Denzel Washington is a legend. I've seen all of his movies and I love them all. I highly recommend Fences, it's not an action movie but it's compelling, complex and powerful.
You're right. Movies like this, John wick, nobody. They all have these seemingly regular guys who have expert training and just great vigilante style movies. I cannot wait to you guys! Watch the equalizer 2
I'm a lot like Robert in that I'm an insomniac with mild OCD. I get about 3 or 4 hours sleep at night if I'm lucky. I wake up before my alarm goes off and wake up on the weekends at the same time even though I don't set the alarm. In my dish drainer I have one plate, one small bowl, one cup, one glass, one spoon, one fork, and one knife. I wash them as soon as I get finished using them. I eat almost the same thing at the same time every day, even on weekends. I get very upset when my routine is interrupted. I found it really irritating that you kept calling him Bob. The girl called him Robert. The woman he used to work with and her husband both called him Robert. Robert got some peace when he killed the first set of Russians, they showed him sleeping when he was usually awake at the dinner. You gave a good reaction except for the Bob thing. The Equalizer 2 is well worth watching also.
Every time I walk through Home Depot I think "this would be a great place for an action or horror movie" with the variety of tools and equipment they have, and this movie finally did it! 🤘😄🤘
In case you did not realize it, that was a Gladys Knight and the PIPS song you hear over the PA system in the store when Robert comes in to deal with the baddies....
Just wanna add one note as a guy born in Lowell.....if ya pahk ya cah in Havahd Yahd, it'll get towed all the way to Meffihd. (Translation - if you park your car in Harvard Yard, it'll get towed all the way to Medford. The accents are fairly accurate.)
@Nikki & Steven React. The part where he says ''I'm sorry'' and your wife did not know how to classifiy that sentence, he says sorry to his dead wife because he promissed her to leave the life he had lived and he did for her but now he was forced to break that promise to his wife. That is the reason he said ''I'm sorry''.
About the honey - it’s the best thing for broken or burnt skin immediately after injury. I burnt my hand once on a BBQ and my mother put honey on right away. Almost no scarring.
Better reaction to this than some I've seen, not just your reactions, but some of the stuff you included. I'd forgotten about him saying that he was one of the Pips, then when the Home store scene starts, a song by Gladys Knight and the Pips is playing.

So happy you watched this movie, I hope you will watch the second movie too, Denzel Washington is such a good actor. The 3rd movie is coming out soon also, so excited for this.
denzel's character used Kali arnis a filipino martial art, he also trained for it in the movie 'book of eli'
Great reaction 😂 one of my favorite TV shows growing up. My best memories are how the Equalizer changed the life of the people he helped. Denzel is just….Denzel
Denzel sells the hell out of this film. He makes this improbable scenario totally believable. My favorite Denzel film.
Steven
Denzel's character, Robert McCall was an agent for I believe, CIA.
I’m sooooooooooooo happy you discovered the equalizer movies!! Can’t wait for the next one!
Denzel Washington is the man. Great reaction! 👍🏿 You'll enjoy the sequel as well.
I love to see Denzel in a different type of war movie or something as drill sarge that’d be hilarious.
The subtle shades and suggestions are handsomely successful at preserving the lead character's mystique and the film's higher plane of purpose.
FYI The original Equalizer series from 1985 - 1989 stared an English actor called Edward Woodward shown on CBS.
I seriously love you guys, and seeing you enjoy a movie that I love is a special experience. It’s like you’re my soul buddies with all the same appreciations. If you’re after a great Denzil film from a while back Fallen is amazing. All the best from your uk fan club ❤️
I freaking love watching movies with you both ...feel like I'm there in the room with ya ..Love IT
The Black Jaguar in the gassing scene in the garage is a throwback to the Equaliser series with Ed Woodward.
22:04 Oh how those words of “tools at his disposal” are more prophetic than you know.
Amazing movie, the sequel is excellent too
Great reaction guys, I’ve seen this movie a hundred times and it never gets old
Denzel Washington is a legend.
" i wanna see what happened with the hammer " and then proceeds to scream and look away when something happens xD funny stuff :D
For another great Denzel movie please react to Crimson Tide. His interaction with Gene Hackman is some of the best acting I’ve ever seen.
I honestly can’t believe people watch other people watch videos…
Denzel and Mark Walberg in 2 Guns. One of my favorites.
Love this film, denzil Washington is a superb actor aswell and plays the part so well.
Having watched the 80's tv show made this move all that much better
Glad you enjoyed this film. Number two is just as good, if not better and a bit darker, as it explores more of McCall's past.
Great reactions.
Every time I walk through Home Depot I think "this would be a great place for an action or horror movie" with the variety of tools and equipment they have, and this movie finally did it! 🤘😄🤘
A year later, and I'm rewatching your Equalizer(s) reviews. Thanks.
nice!!
In case you did not realize it, that was a Gladys Knight and the PIPS song you hear over the PA system in the store when Robert comes in to deal with the baddies....
Man The equalizer, John wick, Jason Bourne, Sherlock Holmes, Mr Nobody...etc. U put all these people in a battle. That shit would be EPIC!
No idea if you know this, the original Equalizer was Edward Woodwood, who was neighbourhood watch leader in Hot Fuzz! Great films.
@Nikki & Steven React.
The part where he says ''I'm sorry'' and your wife did not know how to classifiy that sentence, he says sorry to his dead wife because he promissed her to leave the life he had lived and he did for her but now he was forced to break that promise to his wife. That is the reason he said ''I'm sorry''.
Another great movie along this line is Faster with Duane Johnson. Awesome cinematography as well.
She pretty much said it, she worked with him at the Agency. He was an operative for the CIA.
Haven’t seen this movie since it first came out - forgot how good it was!
The Jack Reacher movies are similar to this in their revenge esq. ways. Love both of these movies and their sequels!
About the honey - it’s the best thing for broken or burnt skin immediately after injury. I burnt my hand once on a BBQ and my mother put honey on right away. Almost no scarring.
Love yall"s channel. Keep up the good work. Happy Easter.
The guy played by Denzel was a former Marine Force Recon team leader that later was in the CIA or the ISA
Great Performance By Denzel Washington
Better reaction to this than some I've seen, not just your reactions, but some of the stuff you included. I'd forgotten about him saying that he was one of the Pips, then when the Home store scene starts, a song by Gladys Knight and the Pips is playing.
best part of this movie, is the convo where he tells the bad guy his whole life story, from start to end...
The theme song for the original TV show is one of my favorites
