    My head canon is that Walsh wanted to give a chance of life back to soldiers who had died in combat, so not as cartoonishly evil as Adam’s plan. The perverse mother role she took on could be explained if she had lost a son that way.

    • @RetroRobotRadio
      @RetroRobotRadio Месяц назад +2

      In the comic they reveal that Adam was the commander of the team once, was nearly killed in combat by demons. So Walsh was assigned Riley instead, but she never gave up on trying to help Adam. She loved both Adam and Riley as sons.

    The Scoobies can blame Spike all they want, but he just took advantage of the problems they had since 4x01. Those problems would have been there whether he said something or not. They're just allowing Spike to be the scapegoat so they don't have to talk about it. What Spike did was wrong, but he also opened up the group's eyes to problems they were ignoring (unintentionally on his part, but he still did so).

    • @Matthew-ij3zm
      @Matthew-ij3zm Месяц назад +2

      So what you're trying to say in the typical Spuffy way is that what Spike did was good, like everything else he's ever done. IT WAS WRONG. But it was good. UNINTENTIONALLY SO. But, please, understand, he's just being the scapegoat, he's actually good.

    • @Buffy8Fan
      @Buffy8Fan Месяц назад +9

      @@Matthew-ij3zm I blatantly say, "What Spike did was wrong." I don't agree with him. I just know his horrible actions created, somewhat, a positive outcome among the group. I say "somewhat" because the group uses Spike doing what he did as a way to justify the fact that they don't talk about the fact that these issues existed before Spike stirred the trouble. And while Willow and Buffy do mend things a little later by talking (while climbing down the elevator shaft), Giles and Xander never do. The time to do it as a group was just after realizing Spike stirred up trouble.

    The whole scheme of this season's Big Bad is pretty convoluted. But it's pretty clear in the end. The way I interpret it is:
    - Walsh knows about demons, She proposes to the military to not only work at suppressing demons for normal defense purposes -- which might be understandable and somewhat of a good idea -- but also to figure out a way to make super soldiers out of demons and humans.
    - Adam is one version of her vision, Riley is another. Not sure why her approaches for them are so different. Maybe Riley was actually meant to be Adam 2.0 at a later time?
    - Where Wash went wrong is not realizing that Adam would become sentient and develop his own idea of his original purpose. He wants to create battalions of human / demon super soldiers too, but not for military purposes -- for just doing evil and wreaking havoc.
    In other words, I don't think Dr. Wash's plan was, in her mind, to do evil and wield unfettered power. It was more contained, even if equally crazy. But her bad, morally questionable plan got way out of control,
    Meanwhile, most of the military wasn't fully in on the full scope of even Wash's plan, much less Adam's. The top brass in Washington were, at least on the idea of using demon parts to amp up the Army. But the military's core problem was approaching the existence of the demon world as a purely scientific problem of animal control. Frankly, it's the sort of approach I would gravitate to if any of this was real. But in the Buffyverse, it's a total misread of the nature of the demon / supernatural phenomenon.
    That's the only way this whole storyline makes any kind of sense. The fact that we have to work at it so hard is why it's one of the least favorite of the Buffyverse. The two big ideas have a lot of promise. They just weren't that well executed.

    • @williambowman2326
      @williambowman2326 Месяц назад +4

      Good analysis of The Initiative. The only item I disagree is that The Initiative was the Big Bad of the season. The real big bad was time. Look at the last scene of Season 3. Angel is leaving, Cordelia and Oz will no longer be around Sunnydale soon, the library and Giles job has been destroyed, and with High School over the reason for Buffy, Willow, and Xander to spend days together is over. The Big Bad is time and how it changes lives, relationships, and purpose. No matter the battle plans, Buffy can not slay the changing of time.The real battles all year dealt with how growing older and facing mature problems are now battles that have to be faced and fought.

    • @Buffy8Fan
      @Buffy8Fan Месяц назад +4

      @@williambowman2326 I like to just say college problems with a group that was in high school together is the big bad. I view The Initiative as an extention of Riley who is Buffy's college "problem" (for use of a better word) against the group. It makes the Initiative arc easier to deal with.

      @@Buffy8Fan Thank you and an excellent point. I was not that big of a fan of Season 4 until my rewatch during the lockdown. It was bold making the real villain for Buffy and the Scoobys a non physical presence that was common for us. Much easier to take on a Vampire or giant snake.

      @@Henrik_Holst That’s interesting. I always assumed it was part of the military plan to have perfect soldiers to follow all orders without and blowback. We know that she was experimenting on many troops ( recall Episode 3 when Harmony is complaining about the taste of the blood of their prisoner wearing a soldier’s uniform) and not sure when it started Marsh did have a keen interest in Riley and she did rig his room with cameras.

    I just love this season and to be honest, you do too. I remember well how you got excited about individual episodes and how you found the whole theme around the initiative interesting. And because you saw so much potential in the season's theme, the disappointment is that in the end it was only about Adam and no longer about Walsh after she died, and the initiative suddenly became a secondary issue. They even moved further and further away from the initiative over several episodes and the initial mystery was gone. Nevertheless, it is a successful season with great individual episodes and an interesting basic structure up to episode 16. Only then did you notice that the ideas were running out and filler episodes were being added up until the finale. I don't think the basic idea with Adam is bad at all. But he would have worked better as a supporting character or if he had been given more background and personality. Maybe flashbacks to his previous life. That would have given him more depth. But all in all a pretty successful season that sets up a lot of what happens in season 5. Especially in terms of character and the general tone that Buffy has taken with season 4. I think you will really like season 5 too. Especially when the story slowly unfolds. It's a complexe story, strong character moments and probably the most twisty and shocking season of all, when it come to certain episodes and story lines.
    This season will definetly break you and i cant wait 😅
    And all the issues you adressed will satisfy you in the end. Trust ❤

    S4 was always going to be slightly difficult because The High School years were over, and the show had to find a new direction. Overall I felt it was disappointing compared to other Seasons and felt somewhat disjointed. Adam, even wasn't really a 'Big Bad' compared with the arc of other seasons. That being said, this was an entertaining episode with the big fight towards the end reminiscent of a Bond Film, with lots of people in a massive big fight in a complex with all sorts of weapons etc, but as you can see episode bullets are flying everywhere but nobody getting hit! We see Willow again gaining amazing power, and being able to transfer to Buffy to make her invincible, there were shades here of The Matrix with the slow motion shots and the strange deflection of Adam's attacks. Riley shows great courage to remove the chip from his chest, and when Buffy pulls out Adam's power source we get a great sense of satisfaction. Once again we have an X-FILES type ending where the covert government men discussing closing down The Initiative could easily be Smoking Man, Assistant Director Skinner etc, as a closing X-FILES scene. Don't worry about E22 finale for S4 It's very different, but an essential episode going forward.

    My problem with Adam as a villain. He had no emotional connection to Buffy and vice versa. An emotional connection wasn't possible. He only cared about her as a tool to help inadvertently create his demon/human hybrid army. The Master needed her to escape, and she, per Nightmares, genuinely feared him. Angel in S2 is self-explanatory. Whike there was no real connection with the Mayor until she put Faith in a coma, there was an absolute connection by hoth to Faith who was part of team big bad. I'll touch on future things as the end of those seasons.

    15:30 That enjoining spell feels too pulled out of a hat to me. My small fix is that the Initiative could have been using similar magic to ‘enjoin’ all Adam’s radically different aspects into something alive. Willow could have found reference to it in those docs.
    We could have had a whole corporate magic subplot, starting with a couple of witches at that meeting where we met Tara, that we later glance in lab coats at the initiative. Magic could plaster over various plotholes, like how spikes chip detects demons. I also think it would be interesting to see scientists trying to employ magic without understanding it.

      Disagree that The Yoko Factor was pointless. Spike breaking up the Scoobys with a presentation of facts and semi truths fully showed the audience the true Big Bad, time . The real battle that they faced was understanding the hurdles of changing lives and the natural progression of time. Everyone was clinging to the safety of what was known and how they functioned in established roles. Think about the final scene in Graduation , Part 2 and then the reconciliation scene in this episode. I recall our Buffy gang calling each other after this episode and use realizing that they needed to lose each other to know what they have.

      Yoko Factor definitely wasn't filler. Spike preyed on actual problems within the group that they wouldn't have resolved otherwise. I don't think k the enjoining spell would have worked if they hadn't aired things out between them.

    You would think that it would be spelled primevil or primeevil. Strange spelling.

    The episode before the episodes where for some reason people lie about their first viewing.
    This will be a weird time for your comment section.
    It is okay to wait a while to view the RUclips comments

      OK, the question is if you mean what I think you mean or not. If yes, I wouldn't call it a lie. I would call it good-natured trolling. Back in real time, someone I will reveal later said, "Trust the writers." From that point, there were three main groups of people. People freaking the eff out thinking they've gone mad or something. The vast majority of these people were new to the online community. The boring nice regulars who didn't freak out and were attempting to find an answer. And the final group, regulars who didn't know the answer and decided to roll with it until one was provided and meanwhile would act as if these new people completely missed everything and would point out the scenes that would answer these questions. They didn't consider it mean, just funny. Is this vague enough or delete worthy? And is this what you meant?

      It's not lying. It's good natured trolling about people's bad memories.

      @@xyex No, it's dozens of people making exactly the same comment. It is spoiling. And gaslighting. Why are you deliberately trying to spoil Cass's viewing experience? (That was rhetorical, btw - don't bother answering - you're a Troll)

      @@wembleyford LMMFAO. No one is spoiling anything. Everything everyone says is literally said IN the episode itself. Imagine seeing someone commenting on this episode "wow, if Spike hadn't slipped about the scoobies fighting Buffy would have never realized he was behind it" and you calling it a spoiler. Because that's literally what you're doing. Crying spoilers over people saying what is said in the episode being commented on.

      @@xyex Stop lying. There is absolutely nothing in S5E1 about 'bad memories' - what there is are dozens of trolls like you in the comments saying exactly the sort of thing you've just said- collectively trying to spoil the show.
