So many people are up to speed on what's real, what's practical, and what's CGI well before a movie is released. I really like the theme of the movie. Early on Admiral Cane talks about how the future doesn’t need pilots like them. But Maverick believes that pilots are crucial because they make choices that AI or anything else can’t. They act on instinct and that’s exactly what Rooster had to do here too. Fanboy didn’t get the laser in time so Rooster acted on his instinct and shot blind. It really puts into perspective how important each pilot is.

you're right. but if you replace these people in this particular situation with multiple drones or air craft driven by AI, they dont have to rush in 2 min. If they would drop bombs from 40 000 feet, that's where lasers are dead accurate.
This was my only gripe with the movie. If you're so low, you gotta dive-bomb it, oldschool. Aim with the plane. I think it would make it even better, if pilots would have to train and master this skill, not relying on guided bombs.

I didn't notice it until subsequent viewings but I also love how after Fanboy pleads, "I got this, I got this," Payback is looking intently at Rooster and calls "Bombs Away," first. Almost as if to give his blessing to Rooster. Initially, I thought it was Rooster calling it 3 times. Thinking about it now, it makes so much sense. I mean who better than Payback to have seen Rooster grow so much over time (covering him as wing man in training to the confidence in speed, just moments prior). 🙌 Just goes to show, Mav picked a great, cohesive team. 💪🍻😎👌❤
