"Why are the wings coming out, Mav."
This cracks me up.
Every time.
in the cinema I thought ... why does rooster not know a F14's wings come out.
a second later I thought ... oh feck he's looking for lift!
@@georgedavidson957oh Rooster knows…he just asks the rhetorical question because he thinks Mav is out of his gourd.
Was Rooster being ignorant because he didn't know the F14's wings or he was referring to why the wings came out when there was no lift?
He's never seen nor heard of the Sweep Wing.
@@mjedge808 Bingo. It's less a "What purpose does putting the wings out serve?" and more "Oh, Christ, this lunatic's gonna do it."
That little « ding » before he says « Maverick » gets me everytime. Such a good movie

If you grew up in the 80s/90s, you _felt_ that moment.
Not as much as 0:39.
I was on Constellation CV64 (77-81), I miss those moments :-) The first time we did an Alert 5, WOW, that was something. Afterburners hitting the Blast Deflectors, impressive.

God this movie is so good. The pacing, the soundtrack and sound cues, the screenplay, everything
The slow orchestral version of "Danger Zone" really brings it home.
Except the gun sounds
All of the call backs to the original were amazing as well. As a big fan of the original I was worried there was no way they could do this sequel correctly. I was fully wrong.
This was a utterly stupid movie, and this scene illustrates that perfectly.
The second movie is never better than the first, well this proves otherwise. AUSTIN POWERS 2
I love the look on Mavericks face he's like " hang on kid I'm about to teach you something"
@rickwatkins6449 Some folks, thinking of a certain Japanese sci-fi franchise, will run in interesting directions with that observation.
Your comment was MORE THAN LMAO, AWESOME!!!

"Why are the wings coming out?" Lol, he knows very well what Maverick has in mind, but hopes against hope maybe theres some other explanation.
If I remember, Rooster never flew on a F14, so he never knew what was happening.
@sfsgaming7831 That's theoretically possible. But let's be realistic, would there be even a single navy pilot that was unaware F14s had swing wings or what they were used for?? Anyone with even a mild interest in naval aircraft knows that let alone the pilots themselves.

Throughout the entire movie, Cyclone has been dismissive of Maverick's exploits and his status as a legendary pilot in the Navy, but in this scene, the moment he says "Maverick," Cyclone realizes it's all true. So good, how this movie brings across so much in such a short moment.
Well put. Exactly right.
The Grumman F-14 "Tomcat" was designed in the late sixties & first flew a few days before Christmas day, 1970.
That it looks "modern" & contemporary, almost 55 years later, is a testament to how advanced & far ahead of its time it was back in the day ! 👏

Watching this movie in IMAX is just different, and in 4D, it's even more amazing, this in my opinion is one of the best experiences I had in cinema.
I had never seen an imax movie before and chose this as my first. It was really good
I didn't see it in a theater because I really didn't like the first Top Gun, but yeah this is one of the few films in the last decade that deserves to be seen in the theater.
thank you evolved bot, 4d huh.. and people still don't get a clue..
@@Dynamitethedrummer You do know what 4D movies are right? Basically a thrill park ride where your seat moves in time with the action. Yeah, that's definitely a very good way to see this movie if it's an option - this scene would be a perfect fit.

I love how they didn't have to bring back the F-14 to make this movie work. But bringing back feels just so good.
I loved the tomcat and did all my research before the movie and thought: “there’s no way they’ll bring it back, they don’t have any replicas probably and it wouldn’t work” safe to say, thoroughly surprised and overjoyed at this scene

His internal monologue at 2:41 "holy crap the stories are true."
Not enough people are liking this comment. The moment Cyclone realized the legends were true.
The one second top down view of the F14 rolling out to the taxi way is the best scene of the movie.
Plus that music score just adds to it
Absolutely, I was thinking same exact thing. I wish they would of added more time to that and showing the wings coming out all the way, instead of partial. THE KING F14 has just entered.
In addition, I've felt the counter clockwise rotation was meant to show "going backwards in time/a return to the past" 0:58
@@MrMice... excellent point and reference

Oh my god I never noticed that!
F14 Tomcat - the King of its time. Thank you Tom Cruise for including this LEGEND back in your second movie.
More like the hangar queen of its time. I love her to death, but she had some serious issues. Which is why Cheney should be brought to trial for killing the Super Tom 21 program just to fuck with Grumman.
@@tetsatou2815 LOL and True, still the greatest. I was CV64 AIMD 77-81 and we had the F14As with the TF30-P414, now that engine was a POS. My second WestPac (1980) we lost 3 F14's within 2 months due to compressor stalls and the first loss resulted with the crew of two dead.
@@bobbycv64 Yeah, when you look at the development of and early years of the Tomcat, and compare it against the F-35, it's wild that anyone would call the Lightning II a bad plane.
Ironic that the F-14 Tomcat has been retired and is considered an obsolete aircraft, while the F-15 Eagle is still around and still considered the best fighter jet ever created.
The F-15 Eagle was designed to go toe to toe with an aircraft that severally overstated it's abilities. AKA the MIG-25 Foxbat. The Russian's had basically puffed out their chest and talked a lot of shit and everyone took them seriously.
@@ericrickson Yes, I'm aware of the story of the MiG-25 Foxbat and the big scare it put into the US military at the time. The F-15 Eagle was indeed created to counter the Foxbat, and it was indeed superior to the Foxbat as the MiG-25 was designed to be a high altitude, supersonic interceptor to take out enemy bombers, and not an air superiority fighter, which shocked many in the west who seriously overestimated the MiG-25's capabilities. But the F-15 and F-14 also served as a necessary replacement for the F-4 Phantom, as the Vietnam War showed how inadequate the Phantom was for the realities of modern combat, despite its speed and power, and that having two separate fighters for the Navy and Air Force designed for their unique requirements was better than the one-size-fits-all approach with the F-4.
The F-14 was an interceptor and fleet protector not intended for a dogfight like the F-16 and F-15.
@@44excaliburand yet lesson NOT learned and we are stuck with the abomination of a one size fits all - the F35.
@@blakesejarma Yep, the F-35 may repeat the mistake of the F-4 Phantom.
Rooster: "Oh my god, this thing is so old!"
Maverick: "Don't you talk that way about my baby!"
LMAO, SO GREAT
"Don't knock it, I shot down 3 MIGS, and 2 Felons in them."
Had a huge poster of an F14 on my wall.
To me it’s still the most handsome aircraft built!!!
The F-14 WAS an impressive fighter, but the maintenance was unbelievable. They also leaked like a sieve. It was easy to tell when one of those birds just came back from flying and were locked and chocked because there were drip pans lined with conweb under them all over the place.
True. It was an ancient plane by the time it was retired and it was absolutely cutting edge when it was built. To this day, I pissed that they chose the FA-18 over the modernized F-14. It would have kept everything great about the F-14, fixed the bulk of it's issues and added nearly everything good about the Superhornet. That plane would still likely be the best 4th gen fighter ever built had it seen production.
Plus, the F-14 just looked cool. The camera loved it. So did toymakers, many anime mechs were F-14 clones and so were their toys.
@@Elthenar The Super Tomcat 21 project woulda been amazing to see go through, but no, Cheney had to go ruin that just to spite Grumman. Prick. Instead we got the Super Bug, who's most impressive trait is it can go slow. Which is a nice trick, sure, but energy controls the fight.
@@tetsatou2815 In an actual dogfight, the best trick the FA-18 has is it's high alpha performance. It apparently has the ability to get it's nose around better than almost all 4th gen fighters.
And yeah, fuck Cheney
Not possible in modern days. The F14 is too big compared to the smaller Super Hornet
@@AM93000 how exactly is that beneficial?
If why had the Super Tomcat 21 that would be an aircraft worth keeping in service since its greater payload makes it better for carrying large amounts of standoff weapons.
Stealth Aircraft are dominating the skys these days but their one great weakness is limited payload due to carrying all ordinance internally.
4th Gen fighters don't have that issue and are being envisioned as missile trucks to back up stealth fighters.
Not only would the Super Tom Cat 21 been better as a missile truck, but it could be used to carry hypersonic missiles, and due to its "tunnel" effect could perform supersonic maneuvers while carrying them to launch points.
The squeak when it stops is so perfect.
Maverick was always a wide card. Completely unpredictable. That's what made him a great pilot. Also if was caught they would have killed him.
I watched this movie 3 times already. The original was was of my very favorites as a little kid. I watched that shit on HBO hundreds of times when I was 7-8 and on.

"This thing is so old".
The pilot, older than the plane: "right".
This is great filmmaking for many, many reasons. But one thing stood out to me. Throughout the whole scene we are fed information about the F14 in an organic way using quick shots, and focus. We are shown that the F14 has two A/A missiles, we are shown the throttle and the rudder pedals action shots that will later be shown during the "splitting the throttles" snap roll, and we are shown how the mechanism for wing movement is operated, again something that will be used in the "overshoot" at the end of the air battle. This is proper filmmaking with the "show, don't tell" approach, and it's ridiculous that such basic rules of cinema are completely ignored today. In this scene, they are teaching in a few seconds all we need to know about the F14 to enjoy what's coming next.
It brings back memories on the Carl Vinson CVN 70 1996
And the kittyhawk
So glad they brought the F14 back, with the handful remaining and it's heroic interceptor story, seeing it again with the best music in the movie brought a tear :)
Only wish they could've brought it back for real, and not via CGI, but the only flyable examples belong to Iran, who is not sharing.
The F-14, despite it´s age is still THE most beautiful jet fighter, followed by Panavia Tornado ;)
The best moments of this movie is when Rooster, who is a Top Gun Academy graduate, just sits back with his arms flailing around & his mouth open when Maverick puts the old F-14 war bird through it’s paces…speaks volumes about Maverick’s capabilities as a fighter pilot.

This movie is perfect. It's absolutely perfect.
I was so touched that this scene felt like a gift for Top Gun fans.
It’s nice to see this movie giving the F-14 the respect it deserves.
I know the idea of Rooster and Mav making their way to an abandoned F-14 and flying it out of the hot zone (dare I say...danger zone?) is kind of unrealistic.
But, I loved every _second_ of it. The movie was so damn good that by this point the writers were playing with house money. They could have escaped in a flying saucer and I'd have cheered.
2:07 The detail of the camera smearing with hydraulic fluid from the landing gear in front is impressive.

Now that I’ve watched it several times, I’m like “what about the ejection seat arming switch!!!!!”
A nearly clean F-14 like in the movie had a greater than 1:1 thrust to weight ratio, if memory serves, it means that once in the air, it (along with the F-15, 16, and 18) could accelerate while standing on its tail and go supersonic.
Hands down best movie in years
I was in the Navy when the F 14 was around. It went through a lot of up grades. The 14 D was a better aircraft at the end.
