The Caesar trilogy is proof that reboots can be awesome when the teams behind them care about things like story and character instead of relying on the brand name to sell it and going with a lazy check box mentality with the script.
What's check boxes mean in movies? Explain that
Watch the original and skip its sequels, remakes and reboots. Original stories are the only ones that count.
@@lpk6372 it’s having certain requirements in the script like length, plot points, action sequences, love interests, etc. these things are often studio demands, rather than things that fit into a story. They often happen when sequels are ordered because the first movie was successful, instead of someone having an idea for the natural continuation of a story.
@@lpk6372 like the main characters get mad at each other for some forced reason so they can resolve it in act 3 before the big showdown. that's always on the sacred hollywood checkbox
@RoundtreeattheGrosvernor the reboots are Oscar caliber. Slow down.
Jeremy has cornered the market in young old guy energy
Probably that's why I love it here
He's Keanu Reeves's secret identity
He has that born in 1981 energy.

It’s called being in your forties
The Caesar trilogy, as you call it, is one of the best trilogies of movies ever, especially Dawn. I was skeptical of this new film (and planned trilogy) but hey, when has Hollywood ever left anything good alone?
It's still a good movie
I recently watched this trilogy first time (except saw Rise before in 2011). Dude for me Dawn was the worst of this 3 movies. I hated it, so many things make no sense in this movie. Personally think they could have done this one much better. Now im much more excited to see Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
@@Aldiraider I can tell you with 100% certainty that you are WRONG, man. I've never heard anyone say that Dawn is the worst one of the trilogy. That's plain insanity.
@@TheEnnisfan thats my opinion. You have yours, and i have mine. "Rise of the planet of the apes" was the best in my opinion, At least it most things made sense in this one. The other 2 have many logical mistakes that drag the story down. I only watched this Triology recently, and i actually wanted to like it. But i couldn´t because in Dawn there were to many mistakes and logic errors, also this movie should have been longer with more scenes.
@@Aldiraider I still think you're wrong, man. That's MY opinion.
Really shocked you didn’t particularly like this. I genuinely loved it. Was never bored because I cared about the characters so much that I enjoyed seeing them just talk.
This feels like the farthest thing from an obligatory sequel that I’ve seen in a long time.

The third act drag and the ending climax was disappointing
He's got a point.. There was definitely something missing

Dawn is easily one of the best movies I've ever seen, I don't remember another movie walking into that surprised me with how great it is, as much as Dawn did
Jeremy never ceases to amaze me with his tastes in videogames, I swear. Specifically his taste in JRPGs.
Jeremy never ceases to confuse me with his insistence on inserting video game references into his movie reviews, thinking the audience will have a clue what he’s talking about.

Why do the studios still think that we can’t be invested in movies WITHOUT humans??? 🤦🏾♀️
It's cheaper that way? Why spend thousands on CGI characters when you can get someone in front of a camera instead.
What’s wrong with humans? Sounds kind of species-ist
To add on, if you’re so angry that there are people in this movie; then maybe don’t watch the movie? Simple as that
Humans have always been an part of planet of the apes movies
Because if there weren’t humans in this movie, it’d be classified as animated and we can’t have animated movies for adults. They need to be for kids. Live action movies are for adults. Just ask the academy!
@@deathsyth8888you really think that’s an issue here? There’s already a shit ton of CGI characters in this film.
I hope I’m not the only person who can say they loved “Beneath the Planet of the Apes”, I actually hope they bring back the mutants, the astronauts and the atom bomb cult because that movie was fuckin’ weird and I loved it.
Idk, it wouldn't make sense in this Apes timeline.
@@user-ui1so3mu7f I could see it happening. Maybe some surviving humans experience another mutation due to the virus and get abilities?
I like to pretend that movie doesn't exist because it shouldn't.
@arw1985 after 300 years, I feel like this wouldn't be the case? The virus only messes with your intellect and speech thus attacking the brain. I don't think mutants will happen here.
I discovered that this year. It was pretty good.
Definitely felt like a part 1. But I enjoyed the performances enough to want more!
Biggest sin this movie committed was not having Maurice. Second biggest sin was having a character that was as close as we got to Maurice, and then giving him barley any screen time.
At least we saw him for a few seconds. Maurice was the best part of the Cesar trilogy
How far in the future is this movie set? Loved Maurice personally, think they should build some of the story around him instead of forgetting about him completely. Yet to see this installment but looking forward to it none the less

Tim burton POTA is probably my favorite Apes movie and equally guilty pleasure. The prosthetics also hold up remarkably well.
I’ll stand on the fact that all the planet of the apes movies (except for the Tim Burton one) are bangers. Even the old corny ones have a nice world building to them that I find charming
The Burton one is soooo bad.
Beneath and Battle are both bad.
It’s been a minute since I’ve seen the Tim Burton one, but I kind of liked it when I saw it in theaters back in the day. I was also, like, 20 years old so maybe my concept of “good” wasn’t so great).
Refresh my memory- what was so bad about it?
I actually really like the Burton one along with all of the others.
@@eyespy3001 at this point I think it’s more bandwagon hopping than anything else. It really isn’t that bad lol. To say it’s worse than all of the movies in the series preceding it is kind of ridiculous to me.
The post credits Jeremy scene for this video is golden.
Ya know, I constantly say to myself, "That Jeremy Jahns guy has great taste!" Then you mention Lunar and prove my point even more. So underrated.

As a long term fan of this franchise I cannot wait to see this on the weekend, thanks for another great review Jeremy
I knew I loved Jeremy before, but now that he actually used a Lunar reference… solidified his awesomeness, no alcohol required.
Holy fuck...Lunar reference. At this hour?
Damn Jeremy, have my like
The fact you referenced retro RPG games such as Lunar and Chrono Trigger made this review top notch
Exactly the comment I was looking for.
Same! Lunar Chrono and Secret of Mana... Blew my mind all those years ago!
For the rest of us, we were lost. It’s not a good idea to insert video game references into movie reviews.
As long as it's a solid time, I think it'll be worth watching. Also, didn't expect Jeremy to mention the Lunar game series.
My man bringing the Lunar references. Uff, right in the nostalgia! Well done, sir!
To be fair, the last 3 Apes movies had extremely important human characters that elevated those films. Woody Harrelson, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Kerri Russel, Kodi Smit-McPhee, James Franco, all played vital roles, it's just more about how they are written, not whether we need them in these films or not. In my opinion, it's a necessary perspective considering it's our world the Apes have taken control of.
But the humans are literally 1 percent of the population of intelligent life at this point in this new series of films. Yes they will always be a part of the story but we have way more story to focus on leading up apes basically replacing humans showing them evolve and get along with gorillas, killing and dissecting humans etc.
@mddifilippo89 I agree, Jeremy expecting the human character to be anything more than a plot device at this point in the world of Apes is what I disagree with. That is what they should be, I want the Apes to have depth more so than any humans, I think the little girl in War was the perfect use, she couldn't speak but you could sense her story just through her emotions, but she also didn't take away any story time for the Ape characters.
Kind of like how Transformers need human characters for certain stories, the problem is the live action TF movies don't have well written human characters.
@zeronightex literally a scene about a guy having a permission slip to sleep with a teenager.
I was under the impression that the humans were basically dead after War
When I found out that Matt Reeves not coming back to direct, I instantly knew that it's not gonna be as good. Still gonna check it out tho.
Edit: I did check it out. The quality is still the same. Just a bit too long in my opinion, but this new trilogy is definitely off to a good start.
But he didn't direct the first film and that film was really good.
@@plo617 What he meant is that, because Matt Reeves' directing left the quality bar so high, it would be very hard to make a new Apes film that well done.
@@plo617 loved the first film as well. Credits to the writers then. Kingdom has the same writers as previous films. The first movie director kinda disappeared and didn't really have good films after that. Matt Reeves on the other hand, directed and co-wrote The Batman.
You're acting like War was as good in quality as the previous two were
when i heard it was being directed by wes ball i knew it wouldn’t be very good
Thank you for the Lunar shout out!!
I love Lunar
Thanks for the review, I always appreciate hearing your perspective! I personally enjoyed it a lot. Incredible CGI, beautiful on-location scenery, solid performances, well-written dialogue, memorable + lovable characters, thrilling action sequences, great narrative premise, and an interesting + multifaceted villain. Only issue I really have with the movie is Mae. Freya Allan's performance is great and the reveal at the end involving her is very interesting, but I feel like they keep her a bit too mysterious. Feels like I could've connected with her more if her motivations + backstory were a little more fleshed out. Some hint at her past/family before the events of the movie would've been appreciated. But I'm sure this will be expanded upon in the subsequent films, so it's not that big of a deal. Also, I hope Noa goes through a training arc or something and becomes a badass. He has that fighting spirit in him but kept getting his ass handed to him lol. Looking forward to the future of the series!
More blooper reel material, please. That was so enjoyable to watch.
I had a Sega CD launch intro flashback when you mentioned Lunar.
Damn you just took me back
I have not seen this movie, but your description of this movie make it sound like something I would like to see. It goes to show that over the years, either you have gotten jaded by certain genre or you have gotten so good at describing movies visually, that you can cause people to want to watch them with you descriptions, In the end, I will have to go see this movie and if it is all that you say about the visuals, I would not care about there not being a plot about characters I care about, it is the visuals that I am all about when it comes to planet of the ages, because I have news for you, it never was about the ape characters. All they always have been to me have been monkeys wondering around and all I could discern are Chmps, Orangutangs, and Apes. It is hard when there are only 3 characters in the movie. Thank you Jeremy -- you are the greatest living reviewer and you convinced me to see this movie!
Mad respect for referencing the Lunar series. You sir, are a true gamer.
Jeremy, my man! Nailing it with the Lunar reference! Any chance you might do review of old games? Bring light to the awesome of old to the young and new.

Jeremy I play a game before watching your videos ( been subscribed for about 6 years). And that game is predict your final rating. And It seems like I get right 95% of the time lol. Love ya man
I actually played Lunar Eternal Blue first so I had the opposite issue lol. Man I wish they'd remaster these games and come out with that sequel they'd mentioned before...
They remastered Grandia and Grandia 2 so you never know. If it does, hopefully nothing stupid like N.A. publishing rights come into play.
@@uwr74Sadly Game Arts has made it clear they aren't signing the rights for Lunar over to anyone because they don't want the original creator to get the rights back (nor Victor Ireland who has US publishing rights to any sequels). So the best we are likely ever going to get is the touch edition of silver star story.
I agree with Jeremy on this. I really liked this, but I think the movie could have focused more on Proximus and his views/distortion of Caesars teachings. He was honestly the standout character for me. It may be unlikely, but I hope if they make a sequel he comes back
Holy shit. I was not expecting a History of the World reference in one of Jeremy's videos. A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.
Been hyped for this since that amazing trailer.

@@TheFreakazoid777 is this you, Stuckmann?
Loved the review and your take on the buddy aspect of the movie. I took a totally different approach with my review and went into the AI and CGI usage. It's much better than soooo many other movies that have come out lately. You can almost see how films age in the "production & release" processes as tech advances between the day filming ends and the theatrical release. The effects companies that Kingdom used are amazing, and I loved getting into what they did to pull off the film. Granted, I didn't talk to the companies direction and I had to make some informed assumptions on who did what and what tools they used in my review of the film.
Props for the Lunar silver Star story and Eternal Blue reference. Totally underrated JRPGs of all time.
I'm loving the Reed Richards look on Jeremy.
I'm more interested in commenting on Lunar:the silver star. YES! Amazing and underrated! Same with its follow-up

Your video games references are great! keep it up!
Those comments about Lunar are real deep lore there, nobody remembers those games anymore.

Good Stuff!
Thumbs up for the bloopers in the end!! …..okay, and a good review.
So many people talk about Andy Serkis when they talk about how great the last trilogy was, and rightfully so. But not enough people bring up Matt Reeves. Alot do for sure, but he's still underrated for my money. What he brought to those last two movies was phenomenal. His entire filmography is pretty spotless. Great looking blockbusters with actual heart and story. Those are harder to come by these days.
True
The bloopers are great! One hell of a mouthful for a title of a movie
Once I remembered that Fox was owned by Disney, my expectations dwindled. Now hearing you talk about the human character pretty much confirmed my suspicions. Not saying its gonna be bad but I already know this aint gonna hit like the past three films.
Nice to see your outtakes at the end! 😂
I’m going in with an open mind, I’m not expecting it to be on the same level as the Trilogy though.
Kingdom is up there with Dawn and War. Not better just in the same ballpark.

Nor should you. It isn’t the same company making this one. The Rodent House is not FOX.
@@antx8563 This is definitely the same level as 2 and 3 for sure. What do you mean? He was just a tyrant collecting weaker tribes of apes and people to do work for him. It's a cash grab
@@Connect200a lot of love and respect was put into Kingdom, it's not a cash grab.
I still want to see how the apes and gorillas get along and how they’re all okay with using humans for sport but we’re talking centuries of time here and evolution. The studio seems like they’re going into this new trilogy with nuclear war in mind. If the remaining intelligent humans get wiped out then leads right into the original movie.
Honestly, I do not understand the love so many people have for this movie. I know it's partially my fault for preempting them with the Reeves films but this movie is easily the weakest of the 4.
Proximus was entirely 1-note as was Noa. Roka was literally just an exposition dump before dying, and Mae/Nova/Echo was pretty much the main character in a movie about apes ruling the world.
I won't go quite so far as to say the movie is "bad" but it's certainly got an A.I. feel to it. The film wasn't really a film and more of an excuse to say "religious figures and history can be twisted".
Again, considering how Jeremy seems to be the only person giving an honest take on the film (intellectually speaking) I can only guess that every other reviewer gets caught up in pretending they're smart and catching "deep themes" that are literally only surface level
Jeremy has officially given me permission to watch this one buzzed! Now I’m excited
Crazy to think I've been watching Jeremy since I was a kid, distinctly remember watching his rise of the planet of the apes review.
The way Jeremy was talking, I really thought he was going to say "good time, no alchohol required!"

Yeah after watching the film and enjoying it I just can't agree with Jeremy's take here.
I took my 55-year old mom to see this with me, she’s a longtime fan of the Planet of the Apes franchise! Sadly though, she was not a huge fan of this movie as I wasn’t either 🤷🏻♂️ I felt the villain was wasted of a character and the ending wasn’t really as climatic as I hoped it would. But hey, at least it wasn’t as terrible as the 2001 Tim Burton movie was 🤣
Hey man! Been a fan for a long time!
Just started a channel myself and would love some tips on anything to help me get better! [Production/Lighting/Editing Software/ETC]
Love the show man!
Ur the only reviewer who even has said the movie was slow everyone else seems to go gaga over it!!
I saw the movie and felt it was slow and not having any significant plot points other than telling us that apes are doing what humans did, ie misunderstanding their religion or leaders and oh yes there are intelligent humans and guess what, still much more intelligent than the apes even though it has been several hundred years since the simian flu. I thoroughly enjoyed the previous trilogy of planet of apes and hence this movie definitely felt more of a let down.
There wasn’t enough action, the pacing kinda felt weird and the final “fight” scene was lackluster
I'm never really sure how good a film it is from Jeremy's reviews sometimes
He's really good at playing Devils advocate and speaking objectively about movies talking about both the good and the bad that by the time he gets to the score I'm generally surprised. I was not expecting a better time if you're drunk score
Because only you can decide that
yeah he's been doing it a lot lately. I notice his reviews don't really have a structure to them. He just kinda rambles on about certain things that make you seem that he liked it and then he'll make a 180 and then all of a sudden it seems he didn't like it which can kinda be confusing at times. If he didnt give a rating at the end I wouldn't know if he liked it or not.
I'm actually surprised to see his take on Kingdom because everyone is loving this film.
Go watch Stuckmann, he'll tell you every movie released is made from rainbows and happiness. Dude is a fraud. Jeremy might lack structure, but it's legit and he shoots you straight
Damnit.

Shareholders probably told them to leave them the fuck alone
After the Caesar trilogy, I feel the next logical step for this franchise should have been re-visiting the original Charlton Heston story, albeit more from an ape’s perspective perhaps. Enough world building has happened to make that story a reality. Sure, I wouldn’t be surprised if that is where this particular trilogy is headed but it would have been nice if it started there. This sounds like filler.
There’s so much more to this world no need to jump immediately into that
Also by your logic isn’t the Caesar trilogy also filler cuz we know what eventually happens like what are you talking about
The last few seconds of this review is how I feel about these apes movies, repeating the same thing over and over, trying to get it right. It is entertaining to see it once.
