Incredible CGI, beautiful on-location scenery, solid performances, well-written dialogue, memorable + lovable characters, thrilling action sequences, great narrative premise, and an interesting + multifaceted villain. Only issue I really have with the movie is Mae. Freya Allan's performance is great and the reveal at the end involving her is very interesting, but I feel like they keep her a bit too mysterious. Feels like I could've connected with her more if her motivations + backstory were a little more fleshed out. Some hint at her past/family before the events of the movie would've been appreciated. But I'm sure this will be expanded upon in the subsequent films, so it's not that big of a deal. Also, I hope Noa goes through a training arc or something and becomes a badass. He has that fighting spirit in him but kept getting his ass handed to him lol. Looking forward to the future of the series!
What’s wrong with humans? Sounds kind of species-ist To add on, if you’re so angry that there are people in this movie; then maybe don’t watch the movie? Simple as that
Because if there weren’t humans in this movie, it’d be classified as animated and we can’t have animated movies for adults. They need to be for kids. Live action movies are for adults. Just ask the academy!

The Caesar trilogy was phenomenal! The CGI was breathtaking especially considering its lower budget compared to some MCU movies which had horrible CGI. But also every movie was a chapter and a story. Each movie told a complete story and I really liked that.
I have not seen this movie, but your description of this movie make it sound like something I would like to see. It goes to show that over the years, either you have gotten jaded by certain genre or you have gotten so good at describing movies visually, that you can cause people to want to watch them with you descriptions, In the end, I will have to go see this movie and if it is all that you say about the visuals, I would not care about there not being a plot about characters I care about, it is the visuals that I am all about when it comes to planet of the ages, because I have news for you, it never was about the ape characters. All they always have been to me have been monkeys wondering around and all I could discern are Chmps, Orangutangs, and Apes. It is hard when there are only 3 characters in the movie. The last few seconds of this review is how I feel about these apes movies, repeating the same thing over and over, trying to get it right. It is entertaining to see it once.
Just came back from the cinema, and I really enjoyed it. I agree with the balancing act of Noa and Mae. I would prefer if they leaned much more into Noa's side of the story (which they do for the most part of the movie). I'm not watching these movies for the humans, I'm watching them for the apes, along with some good human characters. Also, I liked Proximus, wish we got even more of him
He's really good at playing Devils advocate and speaking objectively about movies talking about both the good and the bad that by the time he gets to the score I'm generally surprised. I was not expecting a better time if you're drunk score
yeah he's been doing it a lot lately. I notice his reviews don't really have a structure to them. He just kinda rambles on about certain things that make you seem that he liked it and then he'll make a 180 and then all of a sudden it seems he didn't like it which can kinda be confusing at times. If he didnt give a rating at the end I wouldn't know if he liked it or not.
Go watch Stuckmann, he'll tell you every movie released is made from rainbows and happiness. Dude is a fraud. Jeremy might lack structure, but it's legit and he shoots you straight
@@StajoLaBell lol sounds like you got a personal issue with Stuckmann. I never said Jeremy is a bad reviewer, I actually like his reviews and his high energy. Him and Dan Murrall are my go to reviewers. I'm just saying a lot of his reviews can lack structure.
I regret not waiting for the movie to be available at my local library. Frankly, movie theaters don't appeal to me anymore since the pandemic altered the landscape. Dollar theaters, once a staple, have vanished. Now, the lowest price is six dollars on Tuesdays. Additionally, the scarcity of films that merit a big-screen experience compounds the issue. It seems Hollywood's creativity has dwindled, focusing more on profit than originality.
I agree with Jeremy on this. I really liked this, but I think the movie could have focused more on Proximus and his views/distortion of Caesars teachings. He was honestly the standout character for me. It may be unlikely, but I hope if they make a sequel he comes back
I think what I enjoy most about these films is that, for the most part, the criticism/assessment of them is grounded and realistic; very few are so attached to these movies to, as with Star Wars, argue that they are some of the best films "ever made!".
Honestly, I do not understand the love so many people have for this movie. I know it's partially my fault for preempting them with the Reeves films but this movie is easily the weakest of the 4. Proximus was entirely 1-note as was Noa. Roka was literally just an exposition dump before dying, and Mae/Nova/Echo was pretty much the main character in a movie about apes ruling the world. I won't go quite so far as to say the movie is "bad" but it's certainly got an A.I. feel to it. The film wasn't really a film and more of an excuse to say "religious figures and history can be twisted". Again, considering how Jeremy seems to be the only person giving an honest take on the film (intellectually speaking) I can only guess that every other reviewer gets caught up in pretending they're smart and catching "deep themes" that are literally only surface level
I took my 55-year old mom to see this with me, she’s a longtime fan of the Planet of the Apes franchise! Sadly though, she was not a huge fan of this movie as I wasn’t either 🤷🏻♂️ I felt the villain was wasted of a character and the ending wasn’t really as climatic as I hoped it would. But hey, at least it wasn’t as terrible as the 2001 Tim Burton movie was 🤣
The Cesar trilogy is great cinema. I tell everyone who will listen to me that Andy Serkis deserved an Oscar nom for best actor with war. He’s incredible in that film.
The first trilogy was awesome because it scaled up with each movie and the third one was BIG AMAZE-BALLS. I feel like this movie brought us back to a smaller story ( about as good as the first in the timeline ) and they have room to become bigger and bigger. We'll see the apes grow older ( like Caesar ) and movie 6 will be amaze-balls again. I'm into it.
I still want to see how the apes and gorillas get along and how they’re all okay with using humans for sport but we’re talking centuries of time here and evolution. The studio seems like they’re going into this new trilogy with nuclear war in mind. If the remaining intelligent humans get wiped out then leads right into the original movie.
I disagree with your take on May. I don't think she was a competing main character, I think she was being set up as a villain. Whether or not we'll see her in later movies, what she did in this movie is definitely setting up what the problems are gonna be for the apes in coming movies
I could hardly agree less. Loved the film and the ape and (two) human characters. It's basically a film on religious openness interpretation leading to dogmatic world views. Love's the idea behind the film as well as it's execution.
Not often I disagree with Jeremy but I had a really good time with this one! As good as the original trilogy? Not even close but definitely a good time, no alcohol required 😎
Well this and I like an idiot watched this before I went, and I don't get what he meant by Noah's friends not being with him, they were gone for 20 minutes and were in the entirety of the second half?? and more than just visually? idk it's like he didn't watch the end.
Those comments about Lunar are real deep lore there, nobody remembers those games anymore. I still play Wind's Nocturne whenever I'm listening to music on a quiet moonlit night. Good Stuff!
Once I remembered that Fox was owned by Disney, my expectations dwindled. Now hearing you talk about the human character pretty much confirmed my suspicions. Not saying its gonna be bad but I already know this aint gonna hit like the past three films.
I’m not suprised that it’s not a complete mess. The Maze Runner trilogy is pretty underrated in my opinion. I think marketing decisions and a crowded market of YA adaptations made it lose momentum after the first one.

Bro you should always do the bloopers at the end that is a hilarious way to be more relatable to your audience love it!!!
Why do the studios still think that we can’t be invested in movies WITHOUT humans??? 🤦🏾♀️
It's cheaper that way? Why spend thousands on CGI characters when you can get someone in front of a camera instead.
What’s wrong with humans? Sounds kind of species-ist
To add on, if you’re so angry that there are people in this movie; then maybe don’t watch the movie? Simple as that
Humans have always been an part of planet of the apes movies
Because if there weren’t humans in this movie, it’d be classified as animated and we can’t have animated movies for adults. They need to be for kids. Live action movies are for adults. Just ask the academy!
@@deathsyth8888you really think that’s an issue here? There’s already a shit ton of CGI characters in this film.
When I found out that Matt Reeves not coming back to direct, I instantly knew that it's not gonna be as good. Still gonna check it out tho.
Edit: I did check it out. The quality is still the same. Just a bit too long in my opinion, but this new trilogy is definitely off to a good start.
But he didn't direct the first film and that film was really good.
@@plo617 loved the first film as well. Credits to the writers then. Kingdom has the same writers as previous films. The first movie director kinda disappeared and didn't really have good films after that. Matt Reeves on the other hand, directed and co-wrote The Batman.
You're acting like War was as good in quality as the previous two were
when i heard it was being directed by wes ball i knew it wouldn’t be very good
@@shawklan27 yeah it was
The post credits Jeremy scene for this video is golden.
Why we acting like Jeremy just gave it a bad review “because” he gave reasons for why it didn’t work for him. Let the man do the reviews.
Ya know, I constantly say to myself, "That Jeremy Jahns guy has great taste!" Then you mention Lunar and prove my point even more. So underrated.
You mean “that Jeremy Jahns guy has the same taste as mine!”
"What's that coming out of her nose ?"
"...Spaceballs..."
"Oh shit, there goes the planet"
I wore a Spaceballs shirt when I went to see this
Kevin Durand is having a killer year with this and Abigail
And the Phoenix Suns!

@@kujo1999lol best line in the whole movie
As long as it's a solid time, I think it'll be worth watching. Also, didn't expect Jeremy to mention the Lunar game series.
I just cant agree with this review
It’s a good movie but honestly it’s the weakest of the 4 movies. I’d still put Rise at the same level or slightly above this one. And War is definitely better. And Dawn..well I don’t need to say anything about how great Dawn is lol.
I agree with it cause upon watching it I found that this nowhere near the level of Ceasar's trilogy.
@@davidhardin2856Disagree. I thought this one was better than Rise and Dawn.
@@davidhardin2856not so fast it just a beginning of franchise you can’t say the weakest yet until it really happens.
@@reallydude111no where near as good as dawn come on now. but maybe i was disappointed because that’s where my expectations were
My favorite part of the movie is when Proximus Caesar says:
*”Noa, are you familiar with the legend of Harambe?”*
As a long term fan of this franchise I cannot wait to see this on the weekend, thanks for another great review Jeremy
How was it?
The fact you referenced retro RPG games such as Lunar and Chrono Trigger made this review top notch
Exactly the comment I was looking for.
Same! Lunar Chrono and Secret of Mana... Blew my mind all those years ago!
For the rest of us, we were lost. It’s not a good idea to insert video game references into movie reviews.
Thank you for the Lunar shout out!!
I love Lunar
When Mae spoke, I was like, "Oh... Okay."
With the more she moved and the more she spoke, I became suspicious.
When she yelled at Proximus, I knew "the catfish" was on and the question became, "Who's the villain here?"
The intro to this review had me on the edge of my seat. “Could be a hit, could be a miss, let’s see.” Such a great way to pull into your intro theme and the review.
Holy fuck...Lunar reference. At this hour?
Damn Jeremy, have my like
I had a Sega CD launch intro flashback when you mentioned Lunar.
Damn you just took me back
Excellent Lunar reference. Fantastic, can’t thank Working Designs enough for porting it over.
Got a perfect title for the next movie: Evolution of the Planet of the Apes.
Not bad. Because the evolution theory was proposed and they are still developing into a more intelligent group. Curious to know how they will handle the humans though.
Definitely felt like a part 1. But I enjoyed the performances enough to want more!
LUNAR?! I was not expecting that. Favourite game of all time right now. :D
I actually played Lunar Eternal Blue first so I had the opposite issue lol. Man I wish they'd remaster these games and come out with that sequel they'd mentioned before...
They remastered Grandia and Grandia 2 so you never know. If it does, hopefully nothing stupid like N.A. publishing rights come into play.
@@uwr74Sadly Game Arts has made it clear they aren't signing the rights for Lunar over to anyone because they don't want the original creator to get the rights back (nor Victor Ireland who has US publishing rights to any sequels). So the best we are likely ever going to get is the touch edition of silver star story.
Tim burton POTA is probably my favorite Apes movie and equally guilty pleasure. The prosthetics also hold up remarkably well.
Mad respect for referencing the Lunar series. You sir, are a true gamer.
Thank you Jeremy -- you are the greatest living reviewer and you convinced me to see this movie!
I knew I loved Jeremy before, but now that he actually used a Lunar reference… solidified his awesomeness, no alcohol required.
I’m going in with an open mind, I’m not expecting it to be on the same level as the Trilogy though.
Kingdom is up there with Dawn and War. Not better just in the same ballpark.
@@mddifilippo89I just left from seeing it. No it is not. But it is Good. Walking out I realized how high Serkis and Reeves set the Bar. I’m kind of disappointed in this movie IMO
@@dariusabdullah101I left out immediately knowing this one is number 4 on list. The characters just aren’t as interesting to me and I don’t quite understand what was going on in the kingdom. You destroyed the main apes village to force them into your Kingdom to open a vault door?
Nor should you. It isn’t the same company making this one. The Rodent House is not FOX.
@@antx8563 This is definitely the same level as 2 and 3 for sure. What do you mean? He was just a tyrant collecting weaker tribes of apes and people to do work for him. He wanted to open the vault to gain access the the weapons he believed were within so he could conquer further and more dominantly. Not that complicated.
Been watching u on and off since I was a kid, glad to see you’re still going, you’re one of RUclips’s most under appreciated RUclipsrs ever
Jeremy has officially given me permission to watch this one buzzed! Now I’m excited
I'm loving the Reed Richards look on Jeremy.
Been hyped for this since that amazing trailer.
The way Jeremy was talking, I really thought he was going to say "good time, no alchohol required!"
thats what i was expecting too
Yeah after watching the film and enjoying it I just can't agree with Jeremy's take here.
My man bringing the Lunar references. Uff, right in the nostalgia! Well done, sir!
The Caesar Trilogy is quite possibly one of the greatest movie trilogies of all time. Nothing will ever top the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but it's up there.
This movie was pretty good. I thoroughly enjoyed it. However, I don't think any of the future movies will top Dawn. It will always be my favorite Apes movie.
I'm more interested in commenting on Lunar:the silver star. YES! Amazing and underrated! Same with its follow-up
Do that as a bonus review!!
Jeremy I play a game before watching your videos ( been subscribed for about 6 years). And that game is predict your final rating. And It seems like I get right 95% of the time lol. Love ya man
How amazing would it be if the last scene of this film we see a spaceship crash that sets up a new take on the original first planet of the apes movie
That is what I'm hoping for, (edit) just read what the post credit scene is and it isn't that!
They are still far away in terms of time. Also I don't want another remake of the original, the Burton one was already terrible. They should rather keep telling a new story instead of rehashing old ones like every other franchise does.
@@mikekaraokewait, there's a post credit scenes?
@@arieffandy8846 Yes, so when you watch it-wait when the credits start to roll"

The last few seconds of this review is how I feel about these apes movies, repeating the same thing over and over, trying to get it right. It is entertaining to see it once.
More blooper reel material, please. That was so enjoyable to watch.
Also, I liked Proximus, wish we got even more of him
I'm never really sure how good a film it is from Jeremy's reviews sometimes
He's really good at playing Devils advocate and speaking objectively about movies talking about both the good and the bad that by the time he gets to the score I'm generally surprised. I was not expecting a better time if you're drunk score
Because only you can decide that
yeah he's been doing it a lot lately.
Don't like must be AI used bru
Well said!!!
Nice to see your outtakes at the end! 😂
The Trilogy is all that we needed.
It's a cash grab
Props for the Lunar silver Star story and Eternal Blue reference. Totally underrated JRPGs of all time.
Dude. The lunar reference is fantastic and deeply appreciated.

Hey Jeremy are you gonna make some Video Game reviews again in the future? It's been a while since the last one. Maybe Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?
Once I remembered that Fox was owned by Disney, my expectations dwindled. Now hearing you talk about the human character pretty much confirmed my suspicions. Not saying its gonna be bad but I already know this aint gonna hit like the past three films.

Love you Lunar call out. One of my top 5 rpgs of all time.
The storyline lost me. Too many new things. Had to quickly understand basically no connection to Cesar and it’s just new random characters
I’m not suprised that it’s not a complete mess. The Maze Runner trilogy is pretty underrated in my opinion. I think marketing decisions and a crowded market of YA adaptations made it lose momentum after the first one.
Them maze runner movies were trash 😂
@@straightfacts6482 They were, but you can tell Wes Ball put a lot of effort in them. They look really good considering how bad they are.
