How to do movies right and Tom is a veteran. Apart from all the good points mentioned here I also noticed the female pilot is not propped to be a femme fatale or a guy beater or a love interest. They don’t make her be an obnoxious girl boss either. She’s just another pilot who happens to be a woman and holds her own with the rest of the guys. No pandering here folks. Just a good female character.
She also respects Maverick throughout after the dogfighting in the beginning. Notice how she says "nice" when he says "I'm going anyway" and later she has the look like she absolutely knows he's going to do it right before he says "bombs away"
Completely agree with this. It felt like IMAX was pushed to its limit and everyone sitting in got hit will the full effect of the experience. Absolutely amazing.
Yeah, just his face did a great job of showing the situation he was in. If Maverick failed, it would be a huge kick in the balls to an already shaky morale situation. If Maverick crashed or died, the Admiral would have to answer for it. Even if Maverick completely succeeds, the Admiral has to discipline him for it, but wouldn't be able to kick him out because he just succeeded at it. Somehow Hamm conveys all that in a matter of seconds on-screen.
Saw this movie 3 times in the theater. First time my jaw was dropped holding my breath during this scene.. 2nd I was smiling ear to ear, third was emotional as I tear up. All three times were a rush of adrenaline and emotion. This is easily the best movie Ive seen in years.
This is how you respect a character who had been an icon for more than a generation. Not by deconstructing him to pieces or with the same "it's now older and bitter and useless", but giving him a proper epic send off! Thank you, Tom, for respecting your character and us.
Somehow it was better than the original. A really rewarding movie to watch. My wife isn’t really into action movies, but she sat down halfway through it & was hooked until the end & loved it.
one of the best movie sequences ive ever seen. everyone at my theatre seemed to be holding their breath while watching this! amazing tension and development and the climax. our theatre cheered when he finished the run lol
The ancient prophecies have been fulfilled! Jesus Christ has died and risen again so that everyone that believes in Him may be saved. We are to repent of our sins and believe in Him so that we may have salvation after death. Read the New Testament of the Bible for more information.
Yep. This was the only movie I paid for last year. Everything else I was interested in I screened via the high seas and deemed it unworthy of my wallet.
I adore hangman's expressions during this scene he still has that smug smile but it screams "alright old man, show us what you've really got", it's perfect.
This scene was amazing for all the reasons below, but also because it was the moment they all truly earned their respect for their leader. He showed them that he wouldn’t make them do anything that he couldn’t do himself;that he couldn’t teach them to do. Oh and he did it with style as well, never deviating from his own personality.
@@thee_morpheus Yepp. Fantastic leader. By example. I also loved when he first came to meet the other officers and thought it was a combat mission just for him, he had absolutely no hesitation. He said something like “I’ll make it work”. So badass.
@@carbon.the.christ5626 he knew it could be done.. he was insisting from the beginning that that was the right time, probably based off his own experience in those planes and past combat missions. But he definitely wanted to show them, (and prove the instructors wrong).
@@dignifieddan.4198 i think he knew that was the time that he needed to be done in. But not that it could be done, because he never did it. Seeing all those students fail, had to make him some doubt. Im sure he wanted to know for himself before he sent those students off.
Two points I have. This scene shows just how real leadership is done in the military. As a combat vet, I couldn’t ask my soldiers to do something I am not able to do. Also, If you notice the more experienced pilots (the admirals) instantly knows how important this is by their serious face. The younger pilots look more in awe how he was able to do it on his first run. The older guys know the survival of the pilots depend on if maverick is able to prove it can be done.
Maverick stole a jet when his flight status was grounded and he flew the jet in a manner where it may not be airworthy ever again. This is not an example of good leader ship. This is an example of movie politicking.
Cyclone’s reaction is the best. He’s the commanding officer of the mission and seemingly the antagonist to Maverick’s methods, but in his heart he’s still a fighter pilot and is rooting for Maverick to pull this run off more than anyone. And the fact that we the audience are the only ones to see the hope and excitement in his eyes during Maverick’s run, makes this scene.
I agree. I was worried that he would be someone who’s overly against Maverick out of pettiness, but Im glad that its not. He’s just being reasonable. No one could pull off what Maverick asked, and the time is ticking, so he decided to take over. But after seeing that it could be done, he took action and assign Maverick as team captain, because Maverick would provide leadership and morale boost being on the field. At the end Cyclone risked his entire career for this
I have to say I like Warlock's reaction, too. As the XO, he seems to be freer to root for Maverick while still showing certain deference to Cyclone, but here, he says Screw It and really wants Maverick to pull it off.
It's a win-win for Cyclone. Either Mav fails and he can turn and say, "See? This guy's way won't work" and begin his training, or Mav succeeds, and while he has to eat some crow, the team now knows what's possible and can work on getting it done.
Understated performance by Jon Hamm. And a well written character and expectation subversion. We think he's being set up to be the antagonist, but he's a good leader who cares about those under him and the mission. And he's faced with the impossible decision of prioritizing both.
@@kylenielsen5341 He also knows that Maverick will do something like this after being grounded as he wants to prove it can be done to both himself and his pilots who after having seen it done will have way more confidence in both him and the mission.
I love the dynamic between the admirals in this movie. You can tell that Warlock is one of the last senior officers who still truly believes in Maverick and what he stands for
All students need is an example that something impossible can be done. Before that example doubt holds us back. We fear failure and we fail to commit to our attempt. Once something impossible has been done, everyone else who follows rushes to take on what was once impossible simply because the impossibility has been disproven. I remember years ago when Kurt Browning landed the first quadruple axle was landed in figure skating competition. Shortly afterwards a few skaters managed to also land quads. Now a quad is nearly a mandatory maneuver if one wishes to be a champion contender.
Yeah there is no such thing it cant be done in mavericks eyes it's like you say it can't be done OK let me go to work on it and I'll prove to you it can and it will! be done lol
I saw the original Top Gun when I was in my first enlistment; and the sequel immediately after my retirement. As I was in the military for 39+ years, and there were times that the youthful exuberance of newer troops questions your experience, wisdom and fitness to still kick *ss. There's nothing like showing how it's done. One of my favorite cinematic moments ever!
The best scenes like the Dark Knight’s opening heist, and the Hong Kong extraction scene, along with the main bank heist in Heat appreciate the minute timing of such events to heighten the moments.
I love that once the simulation started there was no cheesy remarks no one tried to stop him it was just him and the people that were wondering if he could actually pull it off beautifully done Edit 2 weeks later: holy cow 4.k likes thank you so much
And no big score chiming in, instead every distraction being cut out. Just the sounds of the stick being moved subtlely in the backside (maybe this is even the actual cockpit audio).
Even in that beach scene where he was knocked over, I felt so sure the boys especially Rooster who had a valid grudge against him would mock and laugh at him like they did at the bar and the dog fighting test scenes but surprisingly and shockingly he offered him a helping hand and lifted him up...which speaks volumes about his upbringing and his parents' legacy and influence on him especially Goose! Loved the on screen chemistry and relationship between Maverick and Rooster. It was aptly executed!
@@Mububban23 have you checked the credit list at the end of the movie? This also had a looot of CGI. But on the other hand true, it also had many practical effects and scenes shot with real cameras.

@@JBTriple8 Except he didn't really because his death was kinda in vain and somewhat ignored in Rise of Skywalker. Rey was already becoming a Jedi before his death and no other force-user got inspired by that. They kinda threw Luke under the bus imo.
Mark my words, years from now, this movie will be remembered as a masterpiece, and a “classic”. It already is, one of the greatest movies of at least the 21st century tbh And I still stand by this claim in 2024
One of the best films I’ve seen in the past few years. I went with my dad who saw the original in theatres and I looked over and he had tears in his eyes in some scenes. I can assure you they weren’t tears of disappoint…. Glad to see the box office numbers too
You are right. That is a draw. There can be no winner. Both are trutly epic scenes for the ages. But I do have to say this. If I could only get to see one, would have to be the docking scene because of the music.
I've stopped counting how many times I've watched this clip. This may be one of the best action scenes in film history. Holding my breath and unblinking just as Jon Hamm was, so as to not miss anything. This movie really is a love-letter to Aviation... and to us fans.
For those that don't know: At this point in the film, Maverick has been training the students for weeks, trying to get them to finish this run in 2 minutes 30 seconds, because that's what the real mission will require in order for them to stay alive. After weeks of training, the students still haven't been able to do it and most have become tired of Maverick, and believe that what hes asking is impossible. Because of this, the Admiral begins questioning Mavericks teaching ability, fires him, and chooses to take over the class himself. He sets a time limit of 4 minutes, which is definitely do-able but will end up getting the pilots killed more than likely because its too slow. Maverick steals a jet and flys the course himself in front of the Admiral and the class just to prove it can be done. And in order to make his point even more, he flys it in 2 minutes 15 seconds, that's 15 seconds faster than the mission even calls for. On top of THAT, he does everything by himself just to show them how it can definitely be done with the two plane teams the students will be flying in. The students will have two jets on the mission, one plane for carrying the bombs and a second jet with a person responsible for aiming the bombs. It might be the most intense scene I've ever watched in a theater. Once you have context it's even better
He isn’t showing off. Remember, every pilot in that mission is a Top Gun graduate, same as him. He’s just proving to them that it can be done, since it’s one thing to hear that the mission is possible in a timeframe, it’s another when you see that not only is it doable, but it can be done with time to spare.
Don’t forget the admiral says “You were brought here to teach them how to do it, and all you’ve taught them is that it can’t be done”. Then he comes in and aces it. Perfect culmination of “who” maverick is.
Just read an article about this scene (what brought me here) and the Navy Pilot actually flying the plane said that this is the one scene he would NOT want to ever do again!! Just knowing this is REAL makes it jaw dropping!!
@ellisjackson3355 My only nitpick was, And maybe it was different in the IMAX because (I didn't end up catching it in IMAX : ( the toned down how damn loud! The after burn is. (My uncle retired as a. F-18 Co-pilot)
I was named Pete Maverick by my Mom he's a huge fan of Tom Cruise. after years at 30 yrs old, watched this with my Mom. You have no idea how special this movie is for me.
This scene is why we went back a second time. real acting, believable script, and an actor who give you your moneys worth And the popcorn a free refills
2:59 Honestly love Warlock's reaction here. He doesn't obviously react to Maverick's performance. Just a pure silent "yes!" with his clentched fist. He knew Cyclone's plan was suicidal compared to Maverick's and he really wanted Maverick to prove his mission strategy is possible. Warlock always respected Maverick.
This is a great scene not just because of the climax, it shows what a real leader is, how he opens the way... Thats why its also inspiring besides everything else... One of the best 5 movies Ive seen in the last 5 years for sure!
I watched the first film when I was 9 years old and I've waited until now for the sequel. I was not disappointed. What an absolute masterpiece. I can't wait until 2060 for part 3.
Love how Hangman is just enjoying the show. He’s been cocky up to this point, but he knows the alpha dog is in town, and he can’t wait to see how it’s done.
I love the previous scene in that room too. Hangman says, "for this mission you either fly like Maverick or you don't come home at all." Then later says "this mission requires flying like no fighter pilot has ever flown before." *looks at Maverick* "not even him." I'm sure I butchered the quotes but I loved how the most arrogant person you've ever seen in your life acknowledges that Maverick is THE Man.
I saw this with my nine-year-old, and she asked me during this scene why Maverick was grunting so much during the run. She was completely blown away when I explained to her how the G-forces from the turns were squeezing his rib cage against his back and pushing all the breath out of his lungs, and it was taking everything he had to not black out and crash the plane. Hopefully seeing this in the theater is something she'll remember when she gets to be a parent herself.
That's only partially true. Gravity is of course squeezing, but pilots are taught to breathe and tense their bodies in a specific manner that forces blood to their head to avoid g-loc. Maverick is doing those grunts intentionally - it's part of the process. And since he's really pulling those g's, he's really doing the proper techniques.
2:20.....love, love, LOVE that quick shot of Maverick going inverted with the camera climbing parallel to the plane. I wish we got more of that angle. It's probably my favorite single shot of the entire movie. What a scene
Another good scene... Well two... The first time Maverick and Rooster go head to head and Mav pulls a braking maneuver to get behind him. The shot of the underside of Mav's plane inside the cockpit is a rare shot... And then later, they do it again, only this time Mav's guarding Rooster with his flares and his plane, seeing as while the flares work for one missile, without speed he can't avoid the other. Two moments, similar cinematography, two different contexts and meanings.
@@davfree9732 that's a really, really nice structural observation about the visual storytelling devices used in this insanely great movie I appreciate you having the attention to call out something that interesting :)
Have to acknowledge Glen Powell's acting in this scene... We see him just 3 times and each time, he conveys so much with just his expressions... 1st time, the smugness got waiting to see a veteran fail. The 2nd, the anticipation hoping to see if Tom will succeed and the 3rd time the admiration that he knows Tom deserves..
Hmm I didn't see the 1st time as waiting to see a veteran fail (though I can understand how someone could see it that way). To me, it was more a 'huh, this could be interesting...'
@@danielchen87 Agreed. If your instructor, who is a legend aviator himself, stole a multi-million dollar jet to prove wrong his superior, I think anyone would be thinking the same thing. Hangman is an antagonistic character towards Rooster but it was reasonable considering Rooster's weakness

@Pete David yea no.. I've met some incredible pilots in my life most of them having years of experience being a cw3/cw4... also with the speed thing, Blackhawks and fighter jets are designed for different purposes obviously so to compare them is unfair
Seeing This sequence in an IMAX cinema was simply jaw dropping this movie has set the bar so high for other filmmakers who love to rely on green screen and CGI to make their action scenes work. I used to be so easily impressed by some of the scenes in marvel movies that were action packed obviously those scenes required green screen actors on wires and CGI but Top Gun Maverick reminded audiences why practical effects always triumph like a fuel injected rush of adrenaline to the head i felt like i was in that cockpit fighter jet the whole time Maverick was soaring through the skies the best action sequence of 2022 and also one of the best of all time........
Marvel movies have made cinema into a travesty, we've been watching 20 years of jacked circus clowns feeding us empty, insubstantial dogsh*t. While this movie is classic film art, it's masterful from composition to cinematography to stunt work, you can literally see how much work they put into this, done by humans and not some computers generating sets and figures.
I really wish I could have seen this on Imax or Dolby. We were out of country when this released and there was no Imax near where we were in the Philippines. I'll bet it was an incredible experience
Seeing this movie in IMAX three times was the best damn decision I made, in terms of watching this movie. This sequence alone, made it all worth while.

Cyclone is a bit of an unsung hero, here. He told Maverick that he had only shown the students that the goal was unachievable. Purposefully or not, he motivated Maverick as only a good leader can. Clearly part of his nature, and why he has that position. Another great little detail is the way Warlock clenches his fist at the end, he was rooting hard.
Well said, Cyclone is a great leader because he showed humility and put the mission before his ego. Despite Maverick defying his commands and orders, he could separate insubordination from what needed to be done to accomplish the mission. He exhibited extreme ownership when he gave up his own plan in favor of Maverick's after he proved it could be done - because it was indeed the best way. Cyclone allowed Maverick to lead and risked his career doing so because ultimately the mission and the lives of the team are more important than his career.
@@leraygun All excellent points. Cyclone's ability to put his ego aside is a rare and commendable trait. The filmmakers choice to flesh out these character details is also commendable. It could have been just another action movie.
in fact, there's tiny cues of warlock rooting for maverick the entire movie. right from the start, it seemed like he had believed in maverick even though cyclone had not.
Maverick was cleared of wrongdoing. Goose was killed due to an irreversible flat spin caused by a compressor stall on the F-14. The subsequent ejection was fatal because of how the F-14's ejection sequence works. . The ejection handle is pulled . 0.2 seconds later it fires . 0.5 seconds later the RIO is ejected. . 0.4 seconds later the pilot is ejected. In a flat spin, the canopy doesn't fall cleanly away, it hovers for half a second or so . Remember in the ejection sequence, the RIO is first so as the canopy was not fully clear of the fuselage, due to the lack of forward movement; Goose hit the canopy suffering fatal head and neck injuries.
@@francessweeney2308 yeah. Rooster initially didn't forgive Mav for Goose's death and here Maverick was able to make rooster realize that no pilot this good would have let his father die.

That's gotta be in the top 3 greatest movie scenes ever. The sense of speed and g-force, the sound, the tension, the fact that it's a real jet with no CG... it's just perfection.
I loved this scene, but I wish they would have given the guys watching it something better to get excited about. A line that slowly goes green isn't very exciting. They can't see the cockpit, they can't see the terrain, they can't see his speed. So what are they really getting excited about? All streaming platforms wanted this movie. But Tom Cruise himself said NO WAY. This scene alone needed to be watched at a theater and I understand this is a scene in which the "top gun" is showing the rookies how it's done. Well, Tom Cruise showed the world how movies are done, too. F-ing PERFECT!
What I like most about this scene is that Maverick is prepared to put his life on the line for his students. By proving that the run can be done in 2 minutes 15, he knows that he's effectively saving their lives, but he also knows that it will potentially come at the cost of his own because if he succeeds then he'll get the call up. Excellent writing.
I got goose bumps during this scene in the theater. I may have even said “go! Go! Go!” Under my breath. I felt like a kid again. So glad this movie exists
I like how Cyclone didn't stop it but wanted to see if Maverick could pull it off. While Warlock at the back was internally cheering for Mave to get it done!
Everyone in that room was watching with hope. Warlock knew Mav, he sat back and enjoyed the show knowing fine well he was gonna ace it. Love that body language thing his actor did
The look on Cyclone's face basically says it all. "Either I'm going to arrest him or I'm going to commend him, and the next two minutes and fifteen seconds will tell which."
What is so amazing about this scene is that it isn’t supposed to work so well. There is no enemy. No real danger to the main character. And it is literally a simulation of the real mission. Yet it still conveyed so much drama and tension. And a lot of it was driven by the real grunts by Maverick with each turn. So well done.
Except for the danger of him crashing, breaking the plane, passing out at 9+G or failing the mission. If you don't think Maverick was in danger, you need to rewatch the scene. He put himself in extreme danger to show it could be done.
@@ApexwithDavin that is all true. I wasn’t taking that away from the scene. I was comparing it to what would normally be a climactic moment in a film. On the surface level a scene with this much excitement and tension, involves a clear battle between the protagonist and the bad guy or circumstance . We know he wasn’t going to die in that scene. So the only other outcome was him failing.(also extremely unlikely). But none of that mattered. It was a simulation of the actual mission. And played out like the absolute climax of a film. It was just so well done.
@@dsario174 It was important because if Maverick couldn’t pull it off, then literally nobody could; the mission would be a failure and all of them would die trying. So although there is no enemy, the stakes are almost as high as the real mission. Why even try if it’s impossible? Maverick showed it was possible, and it gave them a huge morale boost that they needed. That’s why it works, because the audience wants and NEEDS him to succeed or everyone else dies
@@lemmihilldrix1450 I don’t disagree with any of that. But aesthetically, the scene is not your typical climax of an action movie. The surface level of the scene is Maverick doing a training course. Unbelievable if you truly understand the importance of the successful run. Mav fails in any aspect here and the pilots go to their deaths in the final mission due to cyclone’s parameters. One slow turn, one mistake and it’s over and Mav knows it yet still pulls it off. Truly remarkable
Not only that, Mav is risking is entire legacy. If he had failed, he would've been court martialed and dishonorably discharged, ruining his whole career
@@cjgs17 I agree. Of course knowing Mav none of that would’ve mattered to him. He just couldn’t live with himself knowing the pilots would die if he didn’t complete the test run. The pilots lives were his to save and my god did he save them.

This was by far the most unexpected, exhilarating scene I have ever seen in a movie theater. The entire theater went from a small cheer to absolute dead silence. The perfect scene for an imperfect character.
What a masterpiece movie from Tom Cruise. The actors Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer... Especially this action scene with these test runs and the finsl detonation of the nuclear basis. 2:38 I love the focus on the mechanics of actually piloting here, moving the controls, performing the actions to make it all happen. A lot of movies would have kept a consistent shot of the aircraft itself but here you’re along with Mav, keeping you rooted in his world.
And they show what it does to a man. It's not often heroic to see a man looking around frantically. Heavy breathing. Grunts and gasps. This is an enviornemt humans aren't meant to operate at. And it's good to see a hero character not ignore or be above them. Even the last bit. He's watching the target camera and trying to guide payload under g and greying out. A hero doest ignore suffering, he moves through it.
The most vital scene in the film. Maverick has always been a "show, dont, tell" and he nails it. What i love most is hes breathing showing how tough the task is. Brilliant.
Arguably the best part of the movie/ best action sequence ever recorded, seeing that Hornet fly through the valley, seeing real G’s affect Tom’s face and his next level acting here makes it seem like he really is flying the plane. Gives me chills, makes my hair stand on end and makes my eyes well up all at the same time.
The admirals’s faces show it all-what one man can do, so can another. Those pilots were all but convinced it could not be done no matter what the sequence or conditions. The admirals were just about there, too. When Maverick sets the conditions, they actually seem to want him to do it. Watching the pilots as he goes down the course is a study in dawning revelation, that this guy isn’t just a good pilot, he’s a different level than any of them and he doesn’t just talk the talk-He gets it done, and he does it on his own, without a tail man or a wingman. ON HIS OWN. Can’t prove your point any more solid than that
This movie has such a good balance of everything, the characters and the plot. Love how Tom pays a homage to his character and the first movie whenever he sees fit, from the very beginning of the movie till the end. You can see the glimpse of the first movie in this, like it’s not a 30 years-apart sequel, it’s like a real life story (or maybe it’s because I watch both of the movies in a row haha) Love it.
I'm so happy this clip is released on youtube now. This scene is magical, this is what movies/theaters are about. This whole scene I was holding my breath and every time Maverick rotates his jet with his neck swinging to fight the G, it was hard for me to breathe, I've never been in a jet yet it felt like my lungs were compressed and I was breathing at the same tempo Maverick was. Man, when he finally climbed back and saw he hit the target, I was finally be able to breathe normally and felt like I've accomplished something - although I was just sitting in theater.

It was beutifull..but i far enjoy more when he goes close in the valley skimming ridges and you can see the Hornet shadow telling its true footage.. you can even tell its a 2 seater F model Hornet instead of the 1 seater E he is flying.. they didnt edited the shadow to a 1 seat hornet ..so you can see the "trick" but that trick also tells it was a real jet with Tom in the back for real in that valley

Alot of credit to the pilot flying the F-18 with Tom Cruise in the backseat, and having to complete what I would guess is a high level and dangerous flight sequence for this film. This had to be a highly stressful situation to be in with a huge movie star putting his life in his hands.
BEST PICTURE... & thank you for not "sexualising "the female pilot. She was equal footing & she knows how to fly, it was a beautiful message, like so many others in this film. Penny, she taught Maverick a lesson in sailing, and wasn't afraid to toss him out of the Bar in good spirit. The inclusion of people from all races was right and proper, kudos. . Surely... BEST PICTURE at the OSCARS. Ive watched it 8 times and Im still itching to watch it again. Thank you Tom, actors and all other producers, The US Navy, & Pilots for a thrill of ride, and a well executed classic that eclipsed the first and WILL stand the test of ALL time as not only entertainment, but a historical document of significance. Best scene in a film in a generation of film. The whole story writing to create this scene with so many back stories to it. To then have no flash music just a background building tension. The acting, the editing, the sound. You’re almost with him in the jet throwing yourself into the turns. Very satisfying piece of film to watch especially if you aware of how it represents all aspects of both films.
@@andymiller6661 now you mention it I can see exactly what you mean. Just like Star Wars in fact I’m surprised they haven’t been sued for similarity. Especially the millennium falcon bit
@richardarthur2207 Yep. A grizzled veteran takes his old partners son under his wing. There's a trench run on an evil place (despite both situations having better solutions) and the son is told to trust his gut, so he turns off his targeting computer and lands a 1 in a million shot. And then gets saved at the last second by the annoyingly charming rogue.
@@andymiller6661 wow man your a movie genius so glad you commented, and made me see the light and help transition from the dark side. Got to be the first movie in history where the plot is the similar?
One of the more underrated aspects of this scene to me was Hangman's reaction. He'd been portrayed as an overly cocky loner (which he is), but the look he gives the admiral when it becomes obvious what Maverick is doing, and the look he gives as Maverick starts say, "Aww yeah, I want to see this!" and shows he thinks Maverick can do it. Just a neat little blink and you'll miss it character development that helps make the movie as cool as it is.
When I saw this movie for the first time I was like oh yeah Hangman is the new Iceman but Glen Powell just killed it and I think he is my favorite character of the film even over Maverick. You wanted to hate Hangman but he was just so good at being cocky and he had to be the one to make Rooster realize what he was doing wrong and when it came time for the actual mission I was scared for everyone because I thought someone isn’t surviving this mission.
@@robertdurant7934 When you're supposed to kinda "hate" a character and you end up loving him instead... like most people did... you know you did a great job!
when i watched this i noticed Hangman how he got comfy in his seat with a smug grin ready to watch Mav fail but halfway thru he was sat forward and had a serious look which i think was where he believed Mav just might do it and then finally a "Damn" from a pilot who now has 100% respect for the "old timer"
His face at 2:35 is a mixture of willing Maverick to succeed, a look of humility and almost a realisation that he is nowhere near that level. His reaction change through this scene is a character study in itself, as are the others. It's an incredible scene that treats the audience with respect.
One of the many things I love about this scene is that Maverick is pre-stressing himself for the G-loads he's going to be taking. He's not showing off when he inverts and pulls down hard, stacking up g's on his way to the deck. He's getting his body prepared for the oncoming ordeal.
Incorrect.. pilots do that to pull positive G which is easier to sustain and does less damage than negative G, if you pull negative G by just nosing over into the dive you’ll give yourself an aneurysm if you overdo it, its easier on your body and just plain faster to roll inverted and pull instead of pushing. When you push forward on the stick you are fighting the lift vector trying to make you go up, but if you invert the lift vector and pull with it, suddenly its much easier and faster to turn
@@Matsumoto77 Well, yes, he inverts and pulls positive G's because, as you say, that's a heck of a lot better than a strong negative G load. My point is that he is also doing some pre-stressing to get his body ready for the high G's he'll be taking during the bomb run. It's like stretching before you exercise...
This is what movie magic used to be like. Thank you Tom Cruise for reminding all of Hollywood what actual entertainment looks like. This is easily the best movie and the best “thing” period (in terms of media) to come out in 2022.
My dad loved military movies. Hell, his love for it is what inspired me to join. But I remember watching the original with my dad back in the 80's, and when this movie finally hit theaters, I got to see it with him. He was so happy and excited and really loved the sequel. I remember the excitement in his voice just talking about about the movie, but it did leave him feeling a bit somber. In a sense, it was like saying goodbye to an old era. But, yeah.. it was the last movie I saw with my dad, and just seeing clips of the movie reminds me my dad. Hopefully one day, high up in the blue sky I'll see him again.
I gave it 5 stars on letterbox. 5 is the highest score you can give. When I was writing my little review I just thought to myself “I literally can’t find any flaw in this movie.” There were no woke politics, no filler scenes that were useless, nothing was a drag, movie knew when to move on to the right scene, actors were phenomenal, and overall gave me chills the entire time as if I was flying one of those
My dad took me to see Top Gun back in the 80s & when I went to see Maverick for the 3rd time, I took my dad. Glad I got to share that experience with him & he truly enjoyed the film.

What makes this scene so amazing is all the pilots in that room had tried to do this very thing (actually slower) and couldn't do it. There were no egos standing tall in that room as they watched. They knew exactly what he was attempting....and then did:)
At the theater there were people in the theater literally sitting forward in their seats, and a few were on there feet. No bullshit, this is the hardest scene in the movie!
Absolutely Agree! They killed it plus with the extra responsibility of having the actors in the back. Very grateful to them for their service and their amazing work on the film were all so nuts about ❤️😄
Not sure how this scene was made, but at @1:54 you can see Tom scared by his own shadow, which is a relatively common thing during flight (mistaking your shadow for another plane, for a split second).
they filmed it on an actual navy course with film crews on the ground in several spots to capture the ground footage, mixed in with the footage from the cockpit of both Tom and the real pilot
Just a good female character.
also very prettier.
She also respects Maverick throughout after the dogfighting in the beginning. Notice how she says "nice" when he says "I'm going anyway" and later she has the look like she absolutely knows he's going to do it right before he says "bombs away"

I would say half wishing to fail....full wishing to succeed. Yeah, I know my math is off....

And Warlock is pulling for him the entire time.
He still stole a jet and did this without permission I don't know which military your serve but in Germany he would have been fired immediately ^^
Maverick stole a jet when his flight status was grounded and he flew the jet in a manner where it may not be airworthy ever again. This is not an example of good leader ship. This is an example of movie politicking.

Beware an old man in a profession where they typically die young.

Actually the single seat F/A-18 drops the bomb, the two seater uses an IR laser to guide the bombs to the drop point.

What a precious moment with your daughter.
That's only partially true. Gravity is of course squeezing, but pilots are taught to breathe and tense their bodies in a specific manner that forces blood to their head to avoid g-loc.

I won't discredit Avatar, but yes, as the HMF whatever chose not to give this more awards is a joke.

I noticed that too
@@leraygun All excellent points.
I believe that Warlock was with Ice the entire time...
Part of why this was important was because now Rooster can see that no pilot this good would have let his father die due to a stupid mistake.
True, but that's not the reason for the animosity towards Maverick.
@@Esperi74 It was certainly part of it. Even if it wasn't directly spoken, it was heavily implied.
Maverick was cleared of wrongdoing. Goose was killed due to an irreversible flat spin caused by a compressor stall on the F-14.
The subsequent ejection was fatal because of how the F-14's ejection sequence works.
. The ejection handle is pulled
. 0.2 seconds later it fires

It would have been better if there was a cockpit cam they were watching, or even a speed indicator or something. It's still a powerful scene, but that's my only nitpick.

My favorite part of this whole thing is how Warlock is just quietly smirking in the back with an, "I told you so" look.
I would have love to see this in the theater. It Is now on mgm+
This is the kind of leadership people need. Not someone who tells you what to do but someone who shows you how is done
Love Warlock’s satisfied look growing as Mav screams through the test range.
Cyclone graduated first in his Top Gun class. I agree that as an inherent jet fighter pilot, there is a lot of that sentiment.
But held just as much if not more weight than an actual climax . And I think his grunts drove the scene.
@@dsario174 Brother… this isn’t even the climax at all. The actual mission is the climax. Maybe that’s what’s messing you up, you’re viewing this as the climax when it isn’t and isn’t meant to be

Plus the grunts on every turn showing the g forces pulled!!!
Even though you know he’s going to do it, you’re on the edge of your seat for the whole thing. Amazing.
You can see the glimpse of the first movie in this, like it’s not a 30 years-apart sequel, it’s like a real life story (or maybe it’s because I watch both of the movies in a row haha)
Love it.

Alot of credit to the pilot flying the F-18 with Tom Cruise in the backseat, and having to complete what I would guess is a high level and dangerous flight sequence for this film. This had to be a highly stressful situation to be in with a huge movie star putting his life in his hands.
Afterwards he asked if they "got it" to which the producer said, "yes".
The pilot replied, "Good! Because I'm not doing that again."
The flight was literally "do or die" in any case, so the identity of the backseater is irrelevant.

Yeah, and I like when he says, "Damn..." even the cockiest guy in the room was impressed.
He's accelerating in order to hit the entry gate at max velocity.
Incorrect.. pilots do that to pull positive G which is easier to sustain and does less damage than negative G, if you pull negative G by just nosing over into the dive you’ll give yourself an aneurysm if you overdo it, its easier on your body and just plain faster to roll inverted and pull instead of pushing.
These types of insights and constructive debates are what make the comment section precious. Much appreciated.
@@PrimarchX Probably because it was as much Maverick doing it in character as it was Tom Cruise doing it IRL before shooting the run

Not sure how this scene was made, but at @1:54 you can see Tom scared by his own shadow, which is a relatively common thing during flight (mistaking your shadow for another plane, for a split second).
I think he was more scared about how big his shadow was as he'd be too close to the hills.
That’s the actual blue angel pilot flying the fighter
I think he's simply checking how low he is to the ground.
they filmed it on an actual navy course with film crews on the ground in several spots to capture the ground footage, mixed in with the footage from the cockpit of both Tom and the real pilot
