In the original because Mavericks the POV character you are totally onboard with the skilled young pilot who want to bend the rules, break the mould and push boundaries. But in the sequel you see Hangman how everybody else saw Maverick, a damn good pilot, but a bit of an arse who you couldn't really rely on because they were only interested in themselves how needs to learn a lesson about what it means to be a team.

@John Carlson There's a lot more CGI in Maverick than many probably realize (especially the bombing run in the third act). But most of it is done as a complement to all of the brilliant live-action photography and practical flying. And as far as I know, all of the cockpit interiors are practical, including the shots where CGI was added in the environments you see through the canopies.

    • @jeffw8218

Any other leader would've shut that shit down immediately before it got out of hand, but that would also not make for a fun film lol). Just because he's really really good doesn't mean it would be a guarantee that it would translate to being a good instructor, at least to his chain of command. Heck if it wasn't for Iceman he would've been kicked out a while ago, and he'd be lucky to not get a dishonorable discharge.

Rooster’s head is on a swivel the entire time the two of them are “chatting” because he knows Maverick is out there somewhere. When Maverick casually rolls up from underneath them, stating “been here the whole time” and “can you see me now” all Hangman can humbly say is “holy $hit”…. no cockiness from him this time… It’s like he’s finally realized he’s in the presence of a true master…

I think Hangman gets a lot of "hate" early in the movie for the wrong reasons. Yes, he's cocky, as most fighter pilots are. But he also does want the best out of people. He tells Rooster in this clip that he has the shot on Mav and to take it. He sucks up his pride before the mission to give encouraging words to Rooster. He is genuinely happy when the target is hit. I also notice that since the exercise ends if anyone (not both) is killed, I think Phoenix might still be allowed to chime in after. Fighters can still fly after taking hits from a gun after all. But Phoenix refused to help Hangman out of spite.

Pilots are a different breed. I was in a NAS training squadron during Vietnam (wasn't easy being the only female in Avionics!) One thing I learned, whatever you tell the pilot they can't do, they will!
One was "Don't buzz the tower!"
Another was for the harrier pilots, "Don't take off with a vertical jet jump!"
    We loved it of course.
The best day I ever had was the day the Blue Angels were coming in for a weekend show.
My job that day was to work on an aircraft at the end of the line. The runway was on a peninsula so the view from the cockpit was beautiful.
Then I looked up and saw the Blue Angels were flying in! Not just flying in, doing all kinds of theatrics and it was like I was the only one in the world watching.
    that had a fantastic view!
Siting high in the cockpit watching this amazing show.
Then they landed right in front of me, incredible landing one after the other nose to tail and they even parked in unison. What a great memory.
Another thing watching this video I remembered the pilots' helmets.
They couldn't mess up their flying gear except the helmet and they had some crazy ones, funny ones. and some reallt artistic, wish someone had done a study on pilot helmet artwork!

I have had sleep apnea for years and finally decided to do something about it by getting a CPAP machine. I got comfortable in my recliner, put my oxygen mask on, and then turned on this movie. LOL, it worked, I pretended I was a jet pilot and then fell asleep halfway into the move. My first night of therapy was enjoyable and I ended up sleeping better that night than I had in years. BTW, I finished watching the movie in the morning and loved it.

@@motionlessmerc8936 that’s a good point. There was a lot of CGI and doctoring in this scene though. They probably didn’t use the intercom audio from the actual plane, or the sound wouldn’t be movie quality clean. They likely had to add those annunciations back in later during editing. There was another scene where Phoenix and Bob get an engine fire after a bird strike. They added that audio back in (ENGINE FIRE, RIGHT!) as well for accuracy. They did an excellent job!
