To be fair, I don't actually think he was a jerk by nature at all, but by purpose. He's very like Maverick in the sense - he sort of pushes people's buttons, in order to push them to be better. That's how I perceived his character for the very start. Hell, one might even say his arrogance is a defense mechanism.

Eh, if I was to be a bit picky, I kind of wish we got to see a scene with how Hangman goes after them. Like maybe have him still be on the carrier while he’s listening to what’s happening to Maverick and Rooster. Hangman begins to think about what Maverick told everyone about "Never leaving your wingman." or "Don't think, just do.", and so decides to go after them. But Vice Admiral Simpson and Bates order him to stand down and that there’s nothing they could do. To which Hangman on intercoms says something like, “Seriously?” or “F*** off.”. The Vice Admirals order him him 2 - 4 more times to stand down or they will relieve Hangman of duty. To which the other Top Gun grads then get in the 2 men’s way, giving a look that says, "You relieve Hangman, you relieve all of us.". Things are about to get confrontational, until they get a call that the F-14 Tomcat with Maverick and Rooster are coming back, to which Simpson and Bates agree to send Hangman to make sure the two get back safety. Now that I think would be a perfect balance of conflict, while also giving the team a moment to show that they stand with one another, even improving Hangman's arc.

Rooster yelling "THIS IS NOT GOOD!" sounded so much like his father, it was haunting. That, and the music playing being the same track that played when Goose was killed made this scene so powerful.
I also like that Maverick got to know what it felt like to be saved by someone like himself.

He was not worried about himself dying but felt sorry for rooster to loose his life as he couldn't save him. Hangman was never a real jerk, it was clear from the start, that Hangman is a young Maverick. He even flew the mission training course like Maverick would in his younger days! 😂I read some people say Hangman is the new Iceman but wrong - he is Maverick. Iceman was never just ego-driven and reckless, and too individualistic, Maverick was. This was literally the conflict between Ice and Maverick at first: both were very talented and competitive, but Iceman was more of a team player and responsible, and Maverick wasn't, just as Hangman now isn't. Hangman, just like Maverick once, is the most talented, with a big ego, hot, individualistic, doing his own thing, but at the same time, deep inside, a good guy with a sense of humor, and a great patriot, ready to do everything for the team, he just chose a more twisted way to get there.
Just like Maverick, Hangman has a habit of leaving his wingman and going solo, and just like Maverick, Hangman saves the day at the end of the movie, because although he was not the most responsible pilot of the group, he was, in fact, the most unorthodox and talented, the fastest, that's why Mav chose him to be the 'secret weapon' in case of the emergency, and he was right! So yeah, Hangman is the new, young, modern Maverick.
Hangman should be the focus of Top Gun 3, I want to know more about Hangman! More about his background, and I want to see his friendship with Rooster develop, so they could be the new Maverick and Iceman, but Hangman needs to be the main character in the next one!

A validation of sorts that this situation is exactly why he pulled Rooster's papers. The promise he made to his mother. Letting Ice down. Never been able to finish the heartfelt conversation both Rooster and Mav wanted to have just before the boarded their respective aircrafts just before the mission.

POWERLESS... having a person you love so much near you... and all your talent, skills, knowledge, experience and everythin you have cannot help you... YOU ARE POWERLESS to save person you love who is NEAR YOU... omg... that's the scariest thing in life I can imagine, IN LIFE in general, not only here in this scene...when you dont even care for your life (like Maverick here) not even a bit, but only for person you love near you... and you are powerless... so that "NO NO NO" just... broke my heart.
