30 miles offshore in a rowboat. “They’re just fishing” 😅

Who told you Mr. Rayan🤣
No, pirates use motherboats, and the pirate area is pretty large.
But the more funny that usually vessels take onboard armed guards. From sri lanka, mostly colombo, to the almost suez ch.
This movie is terrible and a great Hanks' fault.
@@roginovich987 He's just the actor. He's not the guy who made the movie lol
@@roginovich987movie isn’t terrible and it’s pretty realistic as it’s based on a true story. Before this happened in 2009 ships didn’t have armed guards on board

@@CD-tw9tv Captain Phillips never offered himself up as a hostage in place of anyone else and the whole situation was partially his fault (along with the shipping company and the ship operator) for namely cutting the route short near the hostile Somalia coastline, ignoring warnings about piracy and the pleas of the crewmen.

The IRL Captain Phillips was incompetent so it's not that difficult to be smarter than him. He sailed very close to the Somali coastline because he wanted to save time/money on his trip. If he kept his distance none of this would've happened.

I'm not a gun fanatic, I'm in the UK so largely against personal firearms, however I don't understand how these vessels do not carry lethal force where their crew or ship might be in critical danger. The Captain of a vessel in international waters is perfectly entitled to defend his vessel, including the use of lethal force if he deems it necessary. It's about time the insurers (Mostly Lloyds of London) got tough on operators when it comes to vessels being able to defend themselves, or more specifically their insurers risks...
But this problem doesnt exist anymore mate. Coalition fleets have succesfully gotten rid of the Somali pirates problem
@@shindenfighter3303 Are you joking? Piracy is still a severe problem and will likely be well into the future. This doesn't happen so much in Somalia as container ships avoid the area like the plague - Phillips should have as well but deliberately ignored piracy warnings. Nonetheless, as long as there is civil war and widespread poverty in Somalia, there will always be piracy, regardless of whatever coalition forces are mustered against it.
Then the pirates will in time obtain larger arms. RPGs and the like. Also, their lives are cheap - you have a family.
@@noahmarsden7231 A bit hard to avoid the Somalian coast if you're going anywhere that matters (Asia) lmao, but alright.
You want pirates now, go to Yemen (stone throw away tbf) and the Gulf of Guinea
And there are private security teams that can be taken on board, however theyre more of a liability than anything
And whats more, a gun on board a ship where people who probably hate each other after a few months stuck in it... yeah, bad idea, might want to avoid that
because ships going to different countries with different laws on guns, not to mention the crew aren't trained to use weapons. however it has become a lot more recent of companies hiring private security who can defend the ship but thankfully piracy around Somalia has dropped significantly because ships are defended now and i think piracy isn't worth the risk/reward
In reality when Tom Hanks looks through those binoculars he's just looking into a empty Hollywood parking lot
At least the pirates are real?
Bet you are a blast to watch movies with🤦♂️
Hahahaha true @@VacumOvale
Not true. When filming this movie, the Maersk line gave them the Alabama's sister ship to use. Pretty much every scene in, on, or of the boat is filmed on the real thing, to include the ones out to sea.
Wow I didn't know that. I'll tell my friends.
Captain was smart!! He knew they were listening
Captain Philips was like : " We need sticky bombs right now.
Ship crews : " Sticky bomb, captain?"
Captain Philips : "I am not joking. Believe me, i've done it before."
It's a bomb that sticks.

Fine, I'll watch captain Phillips again. 😞
''Chances are they are just fishing''
Yeah, just getting fish with guns and going very fast to the ship to sell fish and possibly avoid sharks :3
Explain to me - how come that every single ship that sails in pirate territory isn't equipped with heavy guns for these occasions? Literally one M2 Browning .50 cal heavy machine-gun could "outshoot" pirate's small firearms and poke a few dozens holes in their boats. It's not like one gun with few thousands rounds of ammo and one or two skilled gunners in crew per ship would be that pricy for an international cargo companies.
the companies probably try to save money by not doing what you just stated. Also, if you bring on machine guns and other armaments, you need trained personnel to operate them. Trained armed personnel on board a ship = more operating cost including insurance coverage. Just guessing
Maybe western ships should not sail in Somalia waters I thought colonialism ended 😂😂
A couple of deer hunters with 30-06s would also take care of skiffs.😁

The truth is stranger and far more frightning than fiction.
His portrayal as Capt was spot on.
I appreciate the little details, such as at around 5:35, Phillips seems to be well-aware of the possibility of the pirates tapping their radio communications, so he may be doing that second voice to try to frighten the pirates into thinking an actual naval warship is in communication and on its way.
'so he may be doing that second voice' Why else would he do that voice?

How these ships don't have guns is crazy
One man with a Barrett .50 on the fantail would settle this with about four shots. you don't have to hit the pirates, just punch a nice hole in the skiffs.
Thank you for your decades of service in our nation's naval special forces by the way.
Found the navy seal vet
You don't need a 50 BMG to punch a hole in a boat made out of sheet metal...
More than 300 confirmed kills hey ?
A decade ago Here at friend's property in the woods had a rotten Fiberglass 20 ft power boat.
It was a giant mosquito breeding site. The thing full of water scum leaves
The termites had eaten up the internal frame of the boat. Trees blocked removing it.
So we tried siphoning but that got clogged over and over.
So we blasted holes in it to drain the water out.
Any caliber would puncture holes but small caliber holes clogged up quickly so the flow stopped.
We started with 22LR for fun..then went to 0.38 and 0.357.
Tried the 454 Judge too. Tried the Judge with 410 shotgun shell and Bingo..lol
The thing that really blew great big holes that got the water drained was 12 guage shotgun shells. Lol. One 12 gage hole with buckshot is better than hundreds of smaller stuff.
Big holes so would not clog as fast with 2 decades worth of pinestraw in the mosquito boat pond.
Using a 12 guage with slugs on those pirates boats or Mosin nagant with iron sights might be interesting too.
With a small caliber hole the pirates can just use a piece of rag to block them. Maybe.
In draining that fiberglass boats the 12 guage was so effective that it made our day.
We purposely started with small calibers since bored engineering guys. Lol
No high power rifle shots from did any giant holes. Nothing Hollywood. Lol
Those pirates boats could be sunk with a lever action using 357 magnum to get longer range.
A dumb 0.58 muzzle loader with a lead slug makes giant holes too.
He cut the Socotra gap and sailed way to close to the coast - he had no one to blame but himself. Warnings have always been clear in that area. Risked crew and vessel - height of unprofessional.
This movie was amazing.
I watched it on netflix last year. A great movie
He said port boat turned right lol

After this long chase, one of the pirates was able to tag the ship with his left hand. Being the fair sportsman that Tom Hanks is, he ordered his crew to stop the ship, close their eyes and count till 30 as it was their turn now.

The real life captain Phillips definitely wanted Tom Hanks to portray him in a movie and deliberately sailed into an area of pirate activity hoping for the exact situation that occurred. That’s why he got into the lifeboat with the pirates.
