I think this is one of the best missile fighter plane scenes ever made! I really enjoyed Owen Wilson in this character. Why did he never make more movies like this!
I thought he was great too. But he’s more of a comedic actor than an action star and Hollywood tends to pigeonhole actors who are really good at a particular type of genre.
@@neon6826 They used flares at 3:55 when there was only one missile but it obviously didn't work. When the second missile was shot they needed a bigger heat source to decoy.

Mais realista que top gun Maverick, faltam 2 mísseis para essa cena ser mais realista, se eles fossem traçados pelo S300 em baixa altitude como estavam, provavelmente teriam sido abatidos no primeiro míssil
@@Santos79700well not completely. The S-300 is semi-active radar guided so flares and dropping fuel tanks wouldn’t stop it. The only way to defeat SAR guided SAM’s are Chaff, notching, outrunning (unlikely), and hitting the deck to confuse the SAM’s radar. If it was IR guided missiles, there would be no SAM launch warning or track because the IR SAM tracks heat signatures which isn’t detected by a F18C’s RWR. The SAM in the movie is the Strela-10 (SA-13), which is a short range, optical/infrared-guided SAM. Those things are super hard to defeat when in range, which is why SOP is stay outside their range (5nm) and altitude.
Omg the sound effects in this movie (this scene especially) is absolutely amazing! Watching this on a great surround sound home theater is just incredible! Really wish Owen did more movies like this!🥰🤩
I'm not in the airforce, and I truly aplreciate the ammount of effort with all the camera angles, all of the inner workings of the ejection seats, and normal and natural radio communications.
I saw this in theaters. My blood was bumping and I had straight chills running down my spine. It was loud, it was visceral, you could feel their adrenaline. One of my top 10 memorable moments at the movies.
The thing about Behind Enemy Lines is that it never aims for anything approaching realism. It's more... expressionistic. Evocative. Everything from this scene to the minefield scene is more about the imagery, the emotions of these concepts like being chased by a missile or running through a minefield. It gets super loosey goosey with how planes work or how mines work but the end result is kinetic and mesmerizing. It's very different to a military film that gets lots of stuff wrong wrong but doesn't do anything interesting with it.
@@mauricioprimus2610 If you take it seriously, yes. Hope you caught the "made in USA" on the burning wreck that the editors focussed on at the end of the clip. Haha!
so the missile chase itself isn't very realistic. real sams can track to a degree, but once it misses it misses, its not going to loop back and chase after. that being said the ejection itself is insanely accurate, right down to the explosive rivets blowing out the canopy and the seat itself being pulled back into the booster.
Yup. A more dramatic way of depicting the SAMs would've been to have multiple launchers of different types firing at them from different directions. At first it's SA-13s and SA-9s, which they manage to escape from, before an SA-6 drives them back down low, and then finally we get a shot of some random Serbs with Iglas getting a call that the jet was heading towards them, and they set up, fire, and get the kill-shot with the main characters never even knowing that they were shot at until after one of the missiles blows the tail off.
1. These are radar guided SAMs, not heat 2. SAMs flying around like they're wire guided with infinite fuel 😂 3. Fuel tanks do not explode when dropped 4. Magical fire ball that finishes the plane? Yeah no. I gave this 1 Owen Wilson WOOOOOWs out of 5
This movie has everything a great action flick needs. Tension, military hardware, the occasional bit of humour and eastern europeans in stripey tracksuits.
It doesn't matter how unrealistic and hokey this sequence is, it's still one of the coolest aviation sequences ever put on film. The real flying footage is great, despite the wacky ass shit the missiles are doing lol.
@@NorthThird Its called un-needed suspension, there doesnt need to be 3 mins of spinning around when you can do groundwork better beforehand. Not every scene has to be turned into popcorn.

The pilots were struggling hard enough to avoid that first missile. Launching that second one so nonchalantly just made your heart sink. Once you saw that shot you knew the pilots were fucked.
There are a few comments mentioning Owen Wilson missing from Top Gun 2. I have to say... Top Gun 2 was perfect, but this combination was definitely missing!
Lol this is the least accurate missile dynamics I’ve ever seen. The missile would’ve not tracked in about 7 cases during the scene. The burn time is way too long, and the missile can’t track and turn to a target behind it. Both missiles would’ve been defeated in the first 5 seconds or they would’ve been shot down.
@@dondelchulia3189 There are actually AAM (not SAM) that can track even it the target is behind it. Not 100% sure, but I think it's Israeli's Python 5. But yeah, most of the scenes aren't realistic.
Imagine living a time loop watching this scene over and over while your Hooter's girlfriend brings you hot wings and a pitcher full of beer in your birthday.
I wish people understood the difference between a movie and a documentary. Its a movie. Its for entertainment. No, its not accurate. But it is entertaining as hell, so stop picking it apart and enjoy it for what it was designed for.
If you have a movie set in reality. Then having something so unrealistic.. so unrealistic it's beyond ridiculous.. that ruins the movie for a lot of people.
The script writers use a trick called suspension of disbelief, but often they take it too far. As an engineer I cringe when I see the scenes where a character, for example, silently crawls in the ductwork through the entire building, easily going around corners, climbing up the risers, manages to open grilles from the inside, and comes out without a speck of dust on him. Not a single turning vane or a volume damper that would block his progress in sight. When I see this the movie is ruined for me, no matter how good it is. Or take the Die Hard With a Vengeance movie, my favorite pet peeve. The bad guys blow up a subway station as a cover for their attempt to rob the Gold Vault at New York Federal Reserve Bank. Within an hour some dude shows up with a column of dump trucks and heavy equipment and the police just let him waltz in and start disturbing the crime scene, no questions asked. I don't even mention the fact that the vault is hundreds of feet below the subway station and it would take months to tunnel to it through hard Manhattan Schist. That's just not believable.
Movies really need someone that has actually seen how SAM's are deployed, other than the infinite magic missiles this scene still holds up great. The ejection sequence was a nice touch I forgot about that.
Dude , You are my man , finally someone takes this angle , if this was radar guided , no way it would have gone to fire ball , if it wasn't missile range would very small and manoeuvres would be a lot more easier and realistic than this , the whole missile launch operation is a bit movie styled.
I also thought "man this still holds up pretty well even in top gun maverick times" until I paused at 4:54 to discover this rough miniature landscape XD
Dad and I started going to the movies together from when I was 7. It was a great father, son bonding time for both of us. I remember watching Behind Enemy Lines at the Majestic Cinema in Colombo, Sri Lanka, with dad. I was 23 at that time. Owen W surprised the both of us with his unexpected departure from comedy and his deep dive into an action flick. Enjoyed the movie and then we both went out and had a few beers before heading home. He passed this June 16th at 82yrs of age. This scene deffo rekindles many cherished memories. I used to share the challenges I was facing from time to time in my life during our special bonding hours. He was always there to listen and to guide me with subtle course corrections! Miss you Appa! I consider myself blessed beyond compare for having born your little boy! Till we meet again dad. Till we meet again!
Cause SAM rockets have enough fuel for 5 minutes of hard manouvering, but have difficulties tracking targets that start to climb and get confused easily and switch to focusing on fireballs created when dropped fuel tanks explode... for some reason.
@@EndriuC As a former B-52 EWO, I can confirm that this SAM scene is totally fucking ridiculous! Same with the MANPAD IR (shoulder launched, heat seeking) missile that homes on a dude’s cigarette 50 yards away in the Vin Diesel movie, “XXX.” Both scenes depict SAM flight dynamics so completely contrary to actual real world performance that I just can’t get past them. Still loved both movies, though!
What if it is russian made SAM instead of american made, would it make a difference in performance? Could it do then, things you describe as ridicuolous?

Just gotta take a second to thank this movies talent acquisition and costume design teams for giving rise to the bounty hunter. His look directly inspired the look for Niko Bellic in GTA IV. Rockstar even approached the actor to see if he would voice Niko, but he didn’t want to do it. They ultimately kept the look in and one of gamings most famous characters was born because of this movie

I'm sorry for your loss at least you got to spent the time with him before he passed. 🙏 i just came here to admire the SAM missile downing this jet what a deadly little bastard even if it isn't realistic.
thanks for the uplifting comment

Honestly it's probably better he missed this one. . .
This scene never gets old. So intense, goosebumps every time
Please take out your nostalgia glasses. This scene looks awful.
Better then Top Gun
True. It starts as cool and over time turns into so stupid that it's funny.
But it never gets old.
@@jonnekallu1627 agree. It’s so exaggerated. SAMs don’t have enough fuel onboard to keep up a chase like that but it’s such a well done scene
@@tiburc10 No, lol. It definitely looks better than when I was 12
I think this is one of the best missile fighter plane scenes ever made! I really enjoyed Owen Wilson in this character. Why did he never make more movies like this!
Because he was miscast. He's not an action movie star. (I love this movie, and I have nothing against him)
I thought he was great too. But he’s more of a comedic actor than an action star and Hollywood tends to pigeonhole actors who are really good at a particular type of genre.
Uhh where are the flares? Why did they forget to use flares which they are the heat decoy.
@@neon6826 They used them once but I do find it interesting that the fire ball only effected one missile!
@@neon6826 They used flares at 3:55 when there was only one missile but it obviously didn't work. When the second missile was shot they needed a bigger heat source to decoy.

Still one of the coolest fighter pilot scenes in movie history. Action packed all the way through.

There ya'll go:)
Now make sure to keep that energy when you watch any superhero movie, car movie, or any movie.

It’s cool, but cheesy as hell if you know how SAMs actually work lol.

Really wish Owen did more movies like this!🥰🤩
The sound of those missiles on the passing shots are hauntingly awesome.
I'm not in the airforce, and I truly aplreciate the ammount of effort with all the camera angles, all of the inner workings of the ejection seats, and normal and natural radio communications.
That SAM tracks like Owen Wilson owed it some money
hahahahaha
And it has infinite fuel capacity.
This scene is amazing even for 2024, so imagine how amazed audience were when they saw this. This is one of my favorite scenes
I saw this in theaters. My blood was bumping and I had straight chills running down my spine. It was loud, it was visceral, you could feel their adrenaline. One of my top 10 memorable moments at the movies.
This film always blows me away. I love the grim depressing color filter and tone and the technical aspects of all the special freeze shots.
I like your optimism. Good way of looking at it.
The airplane flies, the missile flies, the sky is blue and the trees are green. Realistic enough.
In other words, it's Hollywood bullsh!t. At least everyone knows it's a wet dream fantasy.
Classical American propagandist movie.

It doesn't matter how unrealistic and hokey this sequence is, it's still one of the coolest aviation sequences ever put on film. The real flying footage is great, despite the wacky ass shit the missiles are doing lol.
It's called suspension of disbelief, you should try it sometime.
@@NorthThird Its called un-needed suspension, there doesnt need to be 3 mins of spinning around when you can do groundwork better beforehand. Not every scene has to be turned into popcorn.

Phenomenal scene! The music that kicks in when the missile makes contact is perfect!
Yep, just like real life.
This is the movie I grew up watching over and over. Now, I have two Top Guns, but man was this incredible.
This was such a good movie. I wish he had done more like this.
Who knew one of the best military action movies of all time would star Owen Wilson
At 4:11, that shot of him standing in front of the launching missile gave me chills...
3:11 I guess ? Well I wondered too, for him, the guy must deaf with blood running from his ears drums, blind and may be be burning. And other things like shock related wounds but I'm not a medic, simple guess.
Real serbs dont look at explosions
His friends call him Sweaty McSweatface
Seriously though, imagine standing in front of a missed as it launches and not even flinching one bit. Cold blooded.
The pilots were struggling hard enough to avoid that first missile. Launching that second one so nonchalantly just made your heart sink. Once you saw that shot you knew the pilots were fucked.

The most amazing non realistic aircraft shootdown.
I love see the missile lock at their heat signature
The ejection series of event was very realistic.
@@Holret yeah. Never see like that before.

If you have a movie set in reality. Then having something so unrealistic.. so unrealistic it's beyond ridiculous.. that ruins the movie for a lot of people.
i did enjoy the small detail of the SAM not actually hitting the plane like most movies portray. that was cool.
@@josephveksenfeld5344 It’s not believable to you. To the other 99% of movie goers, it’s more than good enough.

So brutally unrealistic in almost every conceivable way...yet still so good.
