I went to see this movie when it first came out. This movie really launched Tom Cruises career. At the time his was 1 of the best movies ever made. I'd give it a 9.
For those who'r wondering why those F5 were dubbed as Mig28. Keep in mind, that the reason was that during filming in TopGun 1986 they'r using actual aircraft, Not CGI. The Soviet would never sell their mig for Nato countries. Eventhough US do have several Migs through various mean, the limitation for spare parts means they didn't or never allow the use of them for just a movie show. Those Migs were invaluable asset for study, not for movie. As a result, they use what available in Navy's inventory, twin engines F5 as twin engines Mig29. But since TopGun never once depicted who'r their enemy, they changed it into fictional aircraft (29 minus one) Mig28, fictional country with fictional insignia. The script called the "bad guys" out as North Korean - if you pay attention to the close up shots of the Mig28/F5s you'll notice a yellow ring around the red star on its roundels- very similar to the N. Korean airforce roundel. It was common in the 80's to use a fictional "stand in" for a real belligerent state (Iron eagle used the fictional country "Bilya" based off several smaller arab countries of the time. ) this was done to avoid any international butthurt, and ensure a wide range of countries would release it.
@@guts-141 nowhere in the movies does it refer to the MiG-28 as a modified F-5. Mikoyan is literally a completely seperate Russian company who makes their own aircraft. When avoiding the Mig missiles, why does Iceman never use flares? In Top Gun: Maverick the Iranian F14s have flares, did the American F14s not have countermeasures?
@@tacheovale lol i suppose you’ve never heard of fiction. Did it ever occur to you that maybe they wanted to pay homage to the original movie and thus found this the most appropriate way to fit it into the script.
Because of real aircraft flying relatively close to each other, ingestion of flares into the engines could have been a concern. Look how close they are in that shot where the F-5s are all over that single F-14 or that shot behind Ice Man where 3 of them are maneuvering. Having flares flying about in that would have been dangerous. Nowadays you can use footage of single aircraft pumping out flares and use that as a template for multiple aircraft just like they used CGI for the SAMs launching and going after the Hornets in the second movie.

Can't let that slide. They didn't say that in that perspective. Watch it again.-
@ I’ve seen it many times. They used F-5 in place of migs for the filming of this movie
Placeholder much?
"on your left, 3 oclock"
Bruh... thats right xD
Those aren't the Russians. Original Top Gun was about North Korea and Top gun Maverick is about Iraq
Iran
@@matthew1790ML close enough I guess
Best of the best !!!Top Gun...❤❤❤
The Best on the Best F-14 TOM CAT 👍
All Merlin does is complain..😄
Just like his real flake of an actor self
After watching these clips I do think Top Gun is better than the second one
"On the count of 3, break right."
"3, 2..."
WTF, lol.
0:28 "break right" .. proceeds to turn to the left.
9:14 my fav bro was like *if he can do that then I'm toast I am outta here* lol
problem with this whole movie was they started it with a talk about how fighters had lost their edge and relied too much on missiles and not guns and the climax of the movie ends with them never using their guns
...and the Tomcat was specifically designed to intercept enemy aircraft and fire the fire and forget Phoenix missile, therefore negating a dog fight.
I swear to god those MIGs look like F5E tigers or T38s 💀💀
they are F-5s.
And in top gun 2 ice asked maverick who's the better pilot him or maverick, in this scene we can see who really is the better pilot.
Ice had 5/1 disadvantage and still survived, even after being hit. They were both good, MAV got lucky with the hits.
@@teutonicknight23 luck and skills made him one step ahead.
Maverick saved his ass multiple times in the first clip
@Tom Cruise yeah why
It's a movie with Tom Cruise the lead.. For gawds sake who do you think was supposed to come across as 'better?'
Hallo, een zeer mooie en aangename fantastische adembenemende speciale movie met de straaljager "s de movies van jou hek ik leren kennen als ik nog klein was met jou walkman en cassette Tom cruise!!!
No McFly ever amounted to anything in the history of Hill Valley...wait...sorry,...wrong movie. BTW he's 91 and still kicking.Seriously, with PTSD over Goose, he'd never be cleared to fly.
It just shows how stessful these situations are the crew on the carrier sweating
That's not mig.. that's F-5 tiger.. 😅
they wont let em have migs lol, I saw it too and was like wtf that aint a mig
De acteur Tom cruise de best icoons movie van de vroeger gouden tijds jaren in ons harts en mainds!!!
So pathetic that none of the enemies deployed flares. Am I alone? 🤷
flares might not have been invented at the time
i think they were still new back then
Apparently that would be dangerous for everyone around at the time
Since the jets are so close to eachother
@@luigimrlgaming9484 Didn't matter in the second movie lol
@@viperswhip7706 they weren’t as close in the second movie
You can see these fighters get quite close
In the sequel when they get that close they use guns
None of the missile shots are as close
“Im bringing him in”
“YOU’RE GONNA DO WHAT?!?!”
Title is a bit misleading. It's never specified what country the hostile nation is in the film.
However, the directors have since stated that they were meant to be North Korean but due to tensions at the time they were changed to an unknown country.
Of course the NPC who uploaded this jumped on the hate Russia bandwagon as mindlessly as most other people who believe every official talking point. Ironic that we (I mean, the regime we live under) are the bad guys now.
Opgegroeid met deze film in onze vroeger collectie op bands cassettes!!!
i was todays years old when i found out they werent based on russians but north koreans
edit: there was an interview and the director said that they were planning to use north korean mig-29s, but it was rejected by the US government
North Koreans operating in the Mediterranean........ right
If you chant ‘talk to me goose’ in war, you are dead.😅
The only country with F-14 Tomcat still on their active fleet is Iran.
Dude top gun is never based on reality they never say what nation the enemy is they just base it off of real world aircrafts and call them enemies
I'm sure America still has hangers of em too just don't use em often
Greats groetjes aan de best acteur van de wereld Tom cruise!!!
Fun fact: the planes used for the Russians were actually Canadian jets
Northrop F-5Cs I believe and it's funny because the guns should be on their noses and not on the wings and they don't use rotary 20mm guns
They must have been like “wtf” 😂😂
Seeing how it's supposed to be SOVIET pilots, the pilots could very well have been UKRAINIANS 🤣
@@jamestopoleski9255 yeah and they also arent actually migs, they used f5 and a4 for the film, and the migs in the this mart of the movie are f5s, which dont even have internal rotary cannon
They said it was planned to be North Koreans
@@Nemean-se5k F5's have twin cannon in the upper nose.
my brother tom cruise is the best pilot ever big salute to you brother
Ice Holliday: I've got five missiles. One for each of ya.
#100 liked! also tom cruise badaazzz over there!
Its the best move, for, me, besides, "Fast and the Furious."
The film never mentioned they were Russians.
The Soviet Union still existed so we assume it’s the Russians
-Maverick's airbone.
-Iceman, what's your position?
This movie is still dope!
I met the actual pilot in Canada. He flew the f14 in Vietnam for the Canadian airforce. He met Nixon in the white house after the event. Real hero.
A little search would help you understand that either he was or you are BSing. Canada never had F14s. To say that a Canadian pilot flew a US owned and undergoing trials F14 for an Air Petrol in Vietnam is straight up BS.
Canada did not send troops to Vietnam. You met a liar.
@@davidbennett288 checkout white tower films doc on Canadian service in Vietnam. Real deal. The only conflict Canada historically did not join the U.S.A. in was desert storm. We as Canadians were pissed about breaking the streak of alliance, for the most part. Cheers.
A hero? For what exactly? Vietnam was a stupid war lmao.
As if you would have a brick of a Polaroid camera in a steel coffin, pulling all of those G's. ...
It's a movie!! It's not factual, it's fantasy!! I'd hate to think what you thought when you saw Titanic!!
Sure, it was quite common and they'd strap that shit down tight, it's all good.
I love this movie because it includes action, one sad scene, and the soundtrack is the best
what's the movie name pls
Ice man was better than maverick...Iceman survived against 5 enemy fighters ALONE with only minimal damage!!!!!
It’s in the script
@@ericdurol5582 Hence according to the script Iceman is better
but did iceman survived using a f14 against a 3 advanced 5th gen su-57?
@@ivangutierrez3709 The SU-57 is a shit fighter lol
I was waiting for him to jump out of the plane, pull out a grenade launcher, shoot down a T-50 and climb back into the cockpit of his F-16.
When avoiding the Mig missiles, why does Iceman never use flares? In Top Gun: Maverick the Iranian F14s have flares, did the American F14s not have countermeasures?
Iranian F14s? No one ever mentioned Iranian F14s in the movie
@@mikealpha1365 Okay, the F14s belonging to the unknown country that was the only country, other than the USA, to operate the F14.
@@tacheovale lol i suppose you’ve never heard of fiction. Did it ever occur to you that maybe they wanted to pay homage to the original movie and thus found this the most appropriate way to fit it into the script.
Not sure why everyone in the first movie never used flares
Maybe internet will answer that
Because of real aircraft flying relatively close to each other, ingestion of flares into the engines could have been a concern. Look how close they are in that shot where the F-5s are all over that single F-14 or that shot behind Ice Man where 3 of them are maneuvering. Having flares flying about in that would have been dangerous. Nowadays you can use footage of single aircraft pumping out flares and use that as a template for multiple aircraft just like they used CGI for the SAMs launching and going after the Hornets in the second movie.
always laugh when ice gets shot in the engine and he shuts it down, to be shot again and magically both engines are fine lol
