    Sorry for being so late to the comments section, I mostly agree with your points. The cost of living is Queretaro is one of the highest in Mexico, it has to do also with the fact that Queretaro has one of the highest GDP per capita and also one of the highest average salaries in the country so the cost of living goes hand in hand with that, if you add the safety and weather and you a perfect mix for higher prices; whenever we travel to some smaller states I usually tell my wife about how cheap the food is… after a while I realized that it was more the fact that I am used to higher prices jajaja. About the food, Queretaro is known for NOT having a very diverse and rich culinary inheritance, other than gorditas de maiz quebrado there’s nothing that unique to highlight, that being said some of my favorite places to eat are here in Queretaro, from fancy restaurants to small local eateries and side of the road places, but all that goodness will usually be based on “imported” dishes, none of those things will be unique or indigenous to Queretaro. About foreign food chain I think it is more a thing about the size of the city than the city itself, you’d fine similar chain penetration in similar sized cities and as a Mexican I have not understood some of the surprise of people that we also eat wings and stuff (I don’t mean you, I mean some people I have met), some people seem to think that a BWW or a Chili’s (I actually think you talked about something like this in one fo your videos) in Mexico is made for expats and will be filled mostly with people form abroad, the truth is that it will be mostly filled up with locals that just want some wing and watch a game or some back ribs, that doesn’t mean we are not Mexican enough, that means that we can enjoy something other than Mexican food which, as a local chubby guy, I’ll tell you is completely normal. About the flights, it has to do a lot with the airline, Aeromexico connects you through Mexico City I think on all the routesbut Volaris has several direct flights to Cancun per day (I think 4 or 5), Los Cabos, Tijuana Merida, I know Viva has direct flights to MTY and Cancun, TAR has direct flights to Guadalajara, MTY, Chihuahua, Hermosillo, Mazatlán (Yep, jejeje) etc. and also as you mentioned, United and AA have several direct flights per day to Texas (IAH and DFW respectively) and at least for Aeromexico is like that for almost all the cities, if you want to fly form one city in the south of Mexico to another one using Aeromexico, the most likely scenario is that you'll fly to Mexico City and back, If I recall well my mom did something like that for going from Veracruz to Tapachula, she connected through Mexico City

    • @WhyNotNow
      @WhyNotNow  2 года назад +2

      Hola Amigo! Good to hear your perspective. We absolutely know our Mexican friends love wings, burgers, etc. no doubt about it but whenever you see fast food chains starting to infiltrate a country/ culture, anywhere in the world (there are documentaries on this "issue" in Thailand, India just to name a few), you begin to see other health issues come to the forefront. That is one thing that the U.S. is very known for unfortunately and it is due to the "go-go culture" where people have less, and less time to do anything (i.e. good old fashioned home cooking), and sometimes just straight-up care not to anymore due to personal preference ~ "convenience" factors. What we love about most other cultures is that they do their best not to allow that to occur regardless of how hard they work. Thanks for sharing all those great points; you know we always love to hear your thoughts.

      It's great NOT to have crappy foreign food chains in my opinion, the locals health usually goes downhill when the McDonald's and co arrive in town

    I recently retired from a real estate development company here in the U.S. that had several completed and on-going projects happening in Queretaro so it's not surprising to me to hear about all of the construction and activity going on there. It was still nice to hear about it from people who actually live (or lived) there. I don't like the modern, "Americanized" feel when I travel internationally either. I want to see and feel the historic and authentic culture of the place. San Miguel de Allende might be more suitable to me.

    My husband is from this state. The restaurants that we ate at in the city were actually pretty good. I think we actually ate at San miguelitos in the historic district. It wasn't too far away from the El Gran hotel. One of the restaurants we ate at which was like a barbecue buffet but that might have been in the shopping district or close to it and when we walked in the door the girl looked at us and said this meal is such and such a prize like as though we might not have been able to afford it. So I looked at her and I said it's okay. It really offended me and it made my meal not so tasty. But anyway I love it there. The mountains of the Sierra Gorda part of Queretaro which is about an hour and a half outside of the town is for our family lives and it's very pretty and quaint and the light bill is maybe 20 bucks a year no I'm not kidding I said that correctly it's about 20 US dollars per year. Very cheap cost of living very sweet people and there are some Rivers in that section for those who like water. Sometimes I wish people knew more about that area but I love its privacy. In that part of the

    I try to do all my business in queretaro with the tiny Tiendas that are family owned businesses and occasional trip to Costco. If you stay inside El Centro you can find almost everything you need. I never go out to those malls outside of central historical, so for me I love it here except for it’s hot in the summer and there’s no trees around or hardly any and for me it gets very hot.I never go to Krispy Kreme’s or Starbucks or all the stores that are in those malls. Yes they are there but no one’s requiring you to go there. As I said I can find everything I need within El Centro histórico.

      @WhyNotNow  2 года назад +1

      There is plenty of lovely greenery/ parks; you just need to explore outside of Centro. Correct, no one is required to visit the chain restaurants/ establishments but that doesn't negate the fact that they are in abundance in this city.

    The part about not finding shoes if you have big feet got my attention since I had that problem when living in Mexico and then in Brazil. I had to get shoes before going or as a last resort wore sandals a lot. In a tropical country it was easy to wear sandals, which in Mexico would be huaraches. My problem was that I loved to play basketball and tennis, or go jogging and for that you need decent shoes. Here in Portugal, where people are generally short and have small feet I am able to get my size of running shoes at a Nike outlet store. Another solution is to buy shoes from Amazon Spain, which has very good prices and delivery is fast and without shipping charges for Portugal. I think though that in your case, if you can't find shoes in your size in Querétaro, you certainly won't be able to find them in another city like Oaxaca or Mazatlán. You said they don't have much of a selection, but surely you can get by with white or black, especially in tennis shoes. I don't see the problem with that.

    Good, informative video, guys. I'm from Queretaro, but presently living in Colorado. Everytime I go back home, I notice the growth you mention here. Traffic these days is horrendous because of the reconstruction of the 5 de Febrero Highway. Parking in the Centro Historico is nearly impossible by now. The food scene is improving but it's still a far cry from that of Mexico City, Guadalajara, Puebla, Oaxaca, and other places. The cost of living keeps going up and the city can't keep up with the housing demands from thousands of new people arriving in the city everyday, attracted by its history, centrality, industriousness, cleanliness, and all the other factors. About the airport's limited connections, I guess Mexico has more of a bus culture, and being just over a couple of hours from the most important airport in the country in Mexico City, it's understandable that we don't have more international, or even domestic connections. Good luck wherever you're moving to. And thank you for not making this a list of complaints about my beloved city, but instead just a fair warning to those planning to come to live in it with unrealistic expectations.

    Thank you -- really appreciate tihs video, as we're 2 San Franciscans exploring retiring to Querertaro. I hear you and identify with your pain about the growth -- i grew up in a BEAUTIFUL valley filled with apricot, cherry and Prune orchards. It was called the Santa Clara Valley, "the fruit basket of the U.S." -- now, you know it as "silicon valley." We were considering moving to the Chapel Hill, NC area -- but it has been EXPLODING in the last few years -- and then, 6 months ago, Apple announced they're building a new campus there -- and Fuji is going on. 80% of the houses we look at were bild 3 years ago or earlier! I'm seeing all the beautiful agricultural lands being built with big housing developments and townhouse. You mention Boise -- and I just think we have too people on this planet -- and they're all trying to move into cities -- the midwest is being emptied out and has been for decades now.

      Hi S Fry, That had to be very difficult to see that all change so drastically. We appreciate you sharing your experience, and thoughts with everyone. As my husband always says, there will always be good, and bad when it comes to growth. We have gotten plenty of people irritated 😉 by talking about the real burdens that come with excessive growth (in any area), especially when the primary focus is $$ without considering/ weighing other very important factors that will have to be sacrificed for the "end goal". We are wishing you well as you prepare to start the next chapter of your lives.

    Wow, what a great video! I am with you on most of your comments, I agree with them all! Some of this worries me and our future there, the rapid growth is my biggest concern. I had to laugh at the food comment, I really dislike eating at the places you mentioned, expensive and not good at all, too much food too. I much prefer the small eateries, and that's where we eat most if we do eat out. I cook a lot at home too as I am Indian, and like eating my own cultural foods. As you say, it's a great city, but I love the centro most of all, once one drives out to the suburbs it looks too much like US/Canada. I LOVE Qro, I always will but some of these comments do concern me a lot. I have been travelling to Mexico since 1993 and I can see the changes, some good and some really bad, but having said this, it is a NAFTA nation so this is not surprising. Thanks again guys! Once again, these are all my personal views and comments, just how I feel about the city so please don't be offended.

    Omg I love how respectful you are to each other , one huge reason we want to leave USA and go to Mexico is just the old fashioned (for the most part) manners and family structure, importance of family and fellow humans , being more present , so it’s refreshing to see an expat couple displaying those beautiful attributes. Good to know about the food , we are from Tucson AZ which is internationally known for its great food ,diversity , taste , options , etc. especially Mexican food and we had to move to North Carolina and the food is so bland and expensive to us (except beef bbq , I must give credit to the south where credit is due) but it’s disappointing, not a deal breaker for a city to consider living in but important to know. Sorry for the long comment but can you spell the Pueblo magico that had the restaurant you guys enjoyed?

    If you like the beach, Mazatlán would have to be on the list for your next destination. It is cheaper than Querétaro and you can fly back to the States quickly. It is hotter and more humid in the summer (average yearly temperature of 29.5º as opposed to Querétaro's 26.5º) but being able to jump in that warm water at any time of the year is a big positive. Plus, you have the beautiful state of Nayarit to the south with beaches and mountains. But, if you really want to get away from the Americanization of Mexico, try Portugal. Great location, one of the safest countries in the world, a lot of English spoken, moderate cost of living, ease of getting residency, mild climate, low levels of corruption, political stability, good and cheap food, and excellent health care. Plus you have all of Spain a short drive away if you want to continue with your Spanish. There is amazing ease of travel. You can travel across 26 countries in the Schengen Area without showing any documents. Try going down through Central America to see how many times you have to go through immigration and customs.

Amazon for Mexico might be your best bet. Really appreciate the food alert. QRO was at the top of my list for some months but...not anymore. Oaxaca is at the top again. The thing about Oaxaca is that there is pretty much no convenient air travel. You gotta go Guadalajara...long drive. But on the plus side Oaxaca filters the state water. Of corse there are those beautiful beaches in Oaxaca that I love. Been looking at Oaxaca for a few years now. I still have to work so I need an airport to fly to DFW airport that is why I was interested in QRO. But I much prefer "village style" living.

    Very good video. I was very interested. Particularly about the food. Very important and a deal breaker for me. LOL I am going to retire to Mexico. QRO was the main choice, only because I'm a New Yorker, the city, and I thought that it would be less of a transition, at least in the beginning. But the modernity was as much of a turn off as a positive. I still may move there for a start. Your video was very honest and touched on several points of interest. BTW the other two cities are San Miguel de Allende and Morelia with Guanajato(?) a secondary consideration. I like the highlands as opposed to the beaches, to live, but it's fantastic that Mexico has it all!! I have subscribed. I like your down to earth approach. Take care and God Bless!

    You can take a bus from Queretero directly to Mexico City airport
    The flights from
    Queretaro to other places are limited :
    To México City, Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, Detroit, Chicago, and Houston. Nacionals are : Monterrey, Guadalajara, Pto. Vallarta, Acapulco, Los Cabos, Tijuana, Cancun, Mexicali, Tampico, Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Durango, Culiacán, Hermosillo, La Paz BC.
    You have to ask the days and Departure Schedules.
    It’s pretty good, don’t you think so ?
    If you put things the other way around, how many flights are from the big cites in the U.S to Queretaro or any other cities in U.S.A the same size of Querétaro.

    Querétaro seems to have a lot of good qualities that would appeal to many expats? It seems to be a clean, modern, mostly upper class city with fairly good weather? However, many of us would avoid going to a soccer game there after seeing the fans rioting at the recent soccer match between Querétaro and Atlas which was horrific with many fans being killed?

      Hi Valentina, You may have already watched our "Farewell/ Goodbye to Queretaro" video, but we actually already stated our reason in this video. Saying Goodbye To Queretaro Mexico/ Where Will We Go Next?/ Queretaro Travel: ruclips.net/video/3KrjJKNXzz8/видео.html. To reiterate/ elaborate further, my husband and I talked about the fact that we felt a calling on our hearts to make a change and continue to do the same type of work that we've done during our time here in Queretaro, in other cities in Mexico (sharing truthful and informative content). We will bring our sane values/ work ethic and continue to share neighborhoods, day-to-day essential + regular life for those seeking to make a move but maybe are concerned because they aren't familiar with a "new place", or have heard false negative things about a place/ culture. There is a lot of information on RUclips about all the "fun stuff/ vacation type lifestyle" but not everyone can, nor wishes to live that lifestyle. We hope to continue to be a resource to others by sharing our perspective, providing informative, and enjoyable content wherever we live while continuing our creative work. We haven't met with any other RUclipsrs but even if we did, we would definitely research something for ourselves and allow that to influence our decisions.

    Have you had any experience of water restrictions in QRO such as service being cut for hours at a time on a frequent basis? I have not come across comments about this elsewhere so I am curious if you know anything about this. Thank you!

      HI Charles, We experienced having no water one time recently (think around September). It was late one night and the water stopped working. The next morning, we learned (via the FB government site) that the water would be turned off for two weeks alternating in various neighborhoods. This seems to be something that occurs annually (I believe not restricted to QRO, but can include a number of other cities as well). There is "pottable water" that is available to some; our landlord ran a pump on top of our roof and we were able to have water during those two weeks although we had to be mindful/ conserve a bit when it came to washing clothes etc. I also hear of other larger apartment complexes that had trucks deliver "pottable water" to unites (of course this water isn't drinkable). There were other people that I believe did not have access to this pottable water and had to go without it during this period of time. Hope this helps.

    • @WhyNotNow
      @WhyNotNow  2 года назад +5

      Hi Kavi, Glad you found it helpful. 😉 We have seen a small scorpion once outside of our place (when it was Summer) but other than that, we haven't had any issues. They are transparent looking and it's wise in general, to regularly spray outside/ inside of your property for basic prevention. It can flood significantly in the state of Queretaro (especially further North) but in the city, we have seen some pretty heavy rain during "rainy season" and we had some water that got I inside our unit from the base of a wall but that was actually an issue on the outside/ next door property which needed to be sealed. Once our landlord was able to identify the cause and properly seal up the outside wall, we never had an issue again. The city streets can get pools/ areas with water on certain streets during the 🌧️ season, and if it rains pretty hard but we've generally been fine here. As for internet/ electric outages we've experienced it a few times during the year we've been here and it can occur from a bad storm, or if they're working on something outside. The majory of the occurrences very short lived with exception to one time that it was out for a solid day give or take.

    El bote in Santa Rosa Jáuregui is about the only place you want to avoid in Querétaro. (Un bote is a gaol/jail, nick, clink, pan, cooler). Talking about the nick, seriously, I am NOT a criminal and do not get involved in crime or hang out with bad'uns/wrong'uns. But there can't be an Englishman I know who hasn't been sent there on some pretext or another - usually it's because they think we're Gringos, when we're European Englishman.
    Some people have commented on the football stadium El Estadio Corregidora as a place to avoid in view of some serious violence not long ago. As I mentioned in reply to someone about the soccer, I would think twice nowadays about taking my girlfriend and kids again. There's not enough protection from the rain. I did wonder, as an English fan of Los Gallos Blancos if there were any English fans of Los Tiburones Rojos? If so, that would account for the disturbances I saw. (Only kidding! I haven't travelled to away games but I do know the vast majority of Gallos supporters are families. We attended as a family just like most other Queretanos.)
    Other stuff about Querétaro you need to know is, yes food is expensive, (23 pesos for a kilo of jitomates at the mo. yep!). In fact everything is bloody dear in Qro. I can get Mexican food cheaper in the UK, especially stuff like maize tortillas at the supermarket (I like tortillas de harina integrales, and even they're cheaper in the UK). If you like your food hot 'n' spicy you've just gotta find the right joint that serves it. I quote from another expat site where they say: "Santa Rosa Jauregui is known for the best carnitas in the country," - type it in and find it. (Mind you, on my trips there I didn't get fed at all!) Can't comment on clothes for XL blokes, and this might sound crazy if you're from the USA, but Sam's Club in Qro do an amazing variety in all sizes at rock-bottom prices. Maccie D's and KFCs - well the kids love 'em, mine too, so an occasional visit is de rigueur.
    And btw, Querétaro was just a wee village really, until the 1985 earthquake, which is when it took off, but you're so right, it doesn't stop and the urban sprawl is pretty darn gigantic. Querétaro is now bigger than the UK's second biggest city: Birmingham (in England).

    I totally agree about the food. I went out there last fall to scout possible retirement locations. I loved, loved, loved the city and the people but, my God, I could not believe the food. I told everyone that if I moved there, I'd have to bring hot sauce with me every time I went out. I do love in though and I loved all the surrounding pueblos magicos and felt very, very safe.

    I have to agree with you on the food “con.”. Not so much about the food being bland because we spent a couple of weeks in Queretero in September and found the Mexican food to be comparable to other cities but there isn’t diversity of food there. First thing we did when we came back to Baja California is to have Pho, sushi and great Thai meals. We did find a decent Indian restaurant in Qto, but no fantastic Italian food which should be easy to find. Looking forward to hearing where about your next move.

      @@WhyNotNow Hi Lisa,
      We went to Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit, Bucerias and Sayulita. None of them were for us. The infrastructure in these towns were really bad. Horrible roads and sidewalks just fall off to street so it is definitely not walking friendly. I was so surprised at how dirty the beaches were as well. In the romantic zone in PV, we were offered drugs multiple times. 😐. We like our wine, but we aren’t into drugs. So we now have a trip to Morelia in January and Puebla in March. We also have a trip planned to Spain since that is where my family is from. So hopefully by summer, we will know where we will move to. Top on our list so far are Queretero, Merida and San Miguel de Allende.

    If there isn't much of a food scene in Querétaro, it would seem that there would be lots of opportunity for entrepreneurs to open the type of restaurants the could be found in larger cities like Mexico City? They would probably do well considering the higher incomes in Querétaro?

      I don’t think you understand. This isn’t America. You don’t just open up a diverse food scene. The local food scene has to be good. You don’t just open burger ramen and Indian restaurants. Culturally the food here sucks and it’s end of story. San Jose California has a shitty food scene. Lots of great restaurants from all over the world but it isn’t local. It’s Vietnamese indian Mexican etc. horrible local food scene. The same with Queretaro and it’s not as diverse.

    Sadly Queretaro is losing its essence…I remember 25 years ago the city had started its transformation… no malls, no big stores, no a bunch of new houses, ufff, just traditional and local life style.. even I bought my home over there … Now, big malls, big buildings, cars, tráfico etc. However, It keeps being my favorite city in the center of Mexico…
