  • Living in Aguascalientes, you will always have something to do. Welcome to our channel WHY NOT NOW; In today's video, we explore more of the beautiful city of Aguascalientes. It is ALWAYS an adventure whenever we vlog in Mexico but here in Aguascalientes, it is even more special, simply because not only are the Hidrocalidos warm, they LOVE sharing their culture not only for their city but for Mexico as a whole. So, come along with us as we stroll through Centro of Aguascalientes and trust we are going to have some interesting conversations with the locals. If you are new to our channel we have been living in Mexico for almost two years now. Starting out living in Queretaro Mexico, we have a library of videos about the city of Santiago de Queretaro, as well as how to get residency in Mexico, cost of living in Mexico, apartment tours Mexico, Mexico travel, daily life living in Mexico, and MUCH MORE. We also moved to Oaxaca City for some time, considered Mazatlan, but realized these cities weren't for us, We knew we just loved central Mexico so much, and being that we had visited Aguascalientes previously, noticed its charm, and authenticity calling us to make it home.

Regarding friendships... I'm 63 (and pretty active) and my son lives here now and he's almost 43. We both really backed off from trying to make friends and both of us have some loose connections to a few locals we like to chat with on a regular basis. But we stopped TRYING to make friends and just focused on doing our own activities. I have made some good acquaintances at places I frequent like the crossfit gym, local herb/health store and he has a pretty good friendship with the guy across the street. But yeah, in Mexican culture you kind of get the whole family package so a mixed bag.
But I've always met my best friends through places/activities I went to solo...

I am not SHOCKED .Some Mexican / Americans do discriminate against Mexicans who are or are born in Mexico or don't speak English .I have witness this many times.Sad but true .

Your point about how hard it is make friends when you are older is spot on! I think there are lots of reasons: If you are new to any community, you have to establish yourself, even prove yourself as worthy of respect, interest, and possible friendship. People have very little time between work, chores, family, old friends, so they may not be interested in making new friends. Sometimes, people have "work friends", "childhood friends", "family friends", and often those different spheres do not meet. The world is also not the safer place it was years and years ago, where trust was a little easier to find or develop. Also, we make friends based on our values and what we might have in common. It might be easier with sports or hobbies, to meet new people and make friends. Or in another country, join expat or language-learning meet-ups and hopefully, make some friends. Just my experience.

Hey guys! My two cents, I think that the reason why it is harder to make friends once you are older has to do, in part, with what you were saying that it is easier to spot someone who is not being honest or true or maybe looking to gain something but I think that also has to do with some other stuff, the other thing that you mention and that I agree with is that once you have family you all need to "click" with new friends at least on a basic level but also I think the fact that when we are young we are more open to new and different experiences makes it easier to have friends that are different from us and those early friendships tend to last a long time because I think they are made upon a more flexible versions of ourselves.

    Hello,
I'm new to your channel and trying to watch all your videos. Just wanted to share how exciting it is to see you're living in Ags. My parents are originally from there and have many beautiful memories of family trips there. Have you walked around El Encino yet? My maternal grandparents lived blocks away from the church. I still have many cousins living in Ags and happy to connect you with them. You are truly an inspiration and hope to retire outside the states one day. I appreciate your genuine love and interest in learning the Mexican culture. Keep up the good work and visit the 3 magical cities of Calvillo etc.

I really think that part of the problem with making friends as we get older is that we close ourselves off more the more times we've been hurt.... at least I know I have. Also, I tend to put myself out there less, out of fear of rejection, because I've been rejected in the past. Kind of a catch 22 but, still... a trap I fall into.

I don't know how long you'll be in aguascalientes or how much free time you have on your hands but there's a yoga center in the neighborhood around San Marcos gardens and Temple they also serve vegan food. I found through my experiences in aguascalientes making new friends especially through the church can be very rewarding you could also help people learn English or take music classes or purhaps, just attending mass or other services on Sunday, will brighten and broaden, your view of Mexican life and perhaps touch a part of you that hasn't been available for a long time. I do recommend a trip to San Juan de Los Lagos, that should be a eye opening experience for for you both! These things I mentioned and many more will help you to become more integrated into the society, so you're not just a tourist wandering around looking for people to talk to and will add new stories and adventures that you can film and show to us! It's quite remarkable what your doing, and why not now!

Wow the lady singing with the baby has a beautiful voice .I'm surprised she hasn't been discovered yet .As far as friends go you are correct ,true friends are few.I'm 55 I say I have 6 people in my life who I can call true friends .In my opinion sometimes It's our fault for calling them friends .Example I have many acquaintances plus co-workers that I call friends ,but in reality they are not friends they are acquaintances who I only have a relationship with at work .Many of my Acquaintances don't even know my last name and I don't know their's .A friend is someone who knows you well knows your family knows your favorite food color etc someone who checks up on you visits you calls you supports you cares about you etc etc etc .I would say for the most part no matter what age group many of us have many Acquaintances but very few friends .You may call them friends but check to see how many of them so called friends come visit you when you are in jail the Hospital or even sick at home .

Awww - man! We would love to be your friends and hang out! LOL Maybe one day... But yes, I am almost 53 and Mark is 61 and we notice that friendships are farther and fewer than in our younger years. Drama and foolishness annoy us most of the time, so we are homebodies. We don't hang out in bars and we don't like wasting money, so that means we pretty much keep to ourselves. That being said it is harder to make friends as you get older for reasons just like that and just as you said - you can smell the BS and don't have time or desire to deal with it any longer. LOL Friendships happen on their own. In the USA, it is ABSOLUTELY true that people are more likely to keep to themselves and not approach you. People will avoid people. We noticed every time we visit Mexico that people are much more approachable and will smile and reply to you positively if you say hello as you walk by. Conversations are easy in Mexico. Perhaps friendships will be easier as well. There is a noticeable difference between cultures.

Over a year ago when I started watching your channel and the Yarbros and more I was planning on moving to Mexico, a cold move (never been to central Mexico only Baja many times) in the 60's, and when I'm in San Diego to visit my Mom. Unfortunately sence the change I con't make the $ requirements. So I'm hoping to get 180 and travel as much as I can. I will be traveling with my Schipperke Dax he go's everywhere I go. He is a true registered ESA and I learned that in Mexico he is a full Service Dog with all access. I know how much you love dogs. Cheers... P.S I'm 72 and play in a swing band for 20 years and all my friends for the most part r 10 years younger.

True friends are very hard to come by when you're older because your senses are more tuned, and you pay attention to them. Whereas when you are younger you are more willing to let some irregularities slide. When you are young you are more interested in having the person as a friend than being friends with the real person and having mutual responsibility to be friends to each other. When you are older there are not many things that can get pass you or that you will let slide. That's why I think friendships can be few and far between or lasting when you are older.

Hi Olivia, 💕 Thanks as always for the warm comments. To give a "brief" summary, Gabriel mentioned that in his opinion, the economy is better in the U.S. because the jobs here don't pay that good. He also said that they have some violence here. He stayed in the U.S. only as a visitor for a short time (in Miami) and he thought that although there are issues with crime, he felt it was worse here (in response to my statement about violence in the states, then said yes, we have all those things too but here there is drug trafficking, robbery/ assualt and you can simply lose your life over your wallet and he felt that in the U.S., it doesn't happen that often). That is when his cousin, Anthony, who actually lived in the U.S. long term said he didn't agree eluding to violence being equally as bad, and stating it depends on where you live in the states. Gabriel then stated that he agreed that certain violence that I had mentioned which occurs pretty regularly in the U S. regarding mass shootings etc., indeed does NOT occur in Mexico. Gabriel said yes you may get robbed or assaulted for "things" but no, we don't have issues with other types of "senseless" loss of life etc. He then shared his thoughts about how he/ his mother experienced rejection from Mexican-Americans while in Los Angeles; telling a story about how his mother asked a girl in the store a question in Spanish and she was somewhat rudely replied " I don't understand/ speak Spanish" when she did and was also Mexican-American. He also asked about a wallet in Macy's and was treated rudely. His point was that he felt even as Mexicans, they experience racism internally from other Mexicans while they were in the states visiting. Towards the end of the conversation, he also talked about how people within different states in Mexico can reject each other too (I look at that like how in the U.S. we occasionally here the bickering- "I'm from up North, I'm from the "South" as one example). This is the "meat and potatoes" so if you watch that part of the video again, it will likely help you follow along. 😉

Hola! to answer your question about friendships later in life, one perspective could be the growth differences and directions of people. In the early years, most are in a "seeking" mode. Seeking to understand themselves, wanting to feel acceptance more from peers, and not quite understanding that friendships are rare jewels so the circle is bigger. Later in life, the focus becomes clearer and that circle diminishes. Less is more in a lot of ways. My circle is small and making new friends is a clear and thoughtful choice. Everyone gets the pleasantries, but only a select few actually land on that page of like-mindedness that can lead to growing a new friendship. Of course, a lot more can be said and shared, but that's one viewpoint.
The conversation with Anthony and Gabriel was good. With regard to the statements about "America", I can see how arrogance could be an opinion. For a person to simply state they are from the United States is clear. To say they are from Mexico is clear. To say that they are from Canada is clear, but to claim the entire Continent, like the other countries isn't a part of it, well that's not well received. CLEARLY. And, yes all who reside in the North American continent could say they are from "North" America, but for US citizens to hog the continent and drop the North like the US only has claims to "America" is ridiculous. So is it ignorance or arrogance? Both require understanding.
Lisa Marie coconut as you probably know is a great source of potassium, so there's that. Steven, you are on point with your boundaries concerning your wife, that's how it's supposed to be. Hey, you guys didn't finish telling us about the conversation at the jewelry store. Nice Castle! Adios!

The reason it is hard to make friends is tat they are all busy with their own kids, grandkids and inlaws etc etc. They don't have time to find time to spend time with anyone only their own. That what I have learned many years ago. Also, envy is a big thing also they may have a smaller house, car, bikecycle, dog or cat ok anything and they feel like they have nothing to talk about. That what I did learn also many years so the best thing is just stay busy with your partner and tha church and live life and be happy.

My friends are from high school, 50+ years ago. Newer friends have come and gone with the jobs basically. A couple others went with divorce. People seem to become more closed to new things as they age. They are settled in neighborhoods, bond because of kids. Try expat groups. There may be some who feel the same since they are away from friends and families and perhaps they can introduce you to their Mexican friends.

I don't know why it turned into a big deal to say "American" or ""Americano". I am Mexican-American (example there) and my whole life I was exposed to Mexican media as my parents only spoke Spanish. They and my grandparents are from the frontera - Chihuahua, Tamaulipas, Valley Texas (yes that grandmother only spoke spanish also) and my whole life the land - the territory was referred to as Estados Unidos, the people as Americanos, gringos as slang, never official.
And it's not just my family or my imagination, old music my abuelito used to listen to, Carlos y Jose, Cadetes de Linares have dozens of examples of lyrics where they refer to "Americanos".

You guys touched a subject that I found very interesting! Why do United Statians call that country "America" and not only Mexicans find it ignorant, clueless and egocentric but the rest of Latin America finds it repugnant as well. The reason why, is because of simple ignorance of not knowing the history of their own land. That is to blame the founding fathers, because they didn't explored or brain stormed a more unique name to call this beautiful country. I say unique because they picked two names that are not unique to call it. United States, the official name of Mexico is United Mexican States the United States of Mexico. which was already taken. "America" is the name of the whole continent, and "America" is the name of much more than just a country. That name was already chosen too. And when you use it to call yourself "American" what happens to the 30 plus other countries that are also part of America??? In Spanish we have a word to our disposal to call people from that country and that is "Estadounidesnse" or just simply Estados Unidos. There are quite a few other names that can be use instead of "American" like United Statian, Usonian, Columbian, Uessian, Washingtonian, Uesican, Unisian, Untied Stater, Colonican, Frede, Columbard, Fredonian, Usian and Appalacians. But none of these names hasn't got caught up yet, but if you live in Mexico just use the word Estadounidesnse is more common.

Mexican Americans are very different than native Mexicans. One is raised in mexico and the other in US, then some in both, big difference between all of them. Culture, media, traditions play a part. Mexican Americans think they belong more to the US (by birth or taken when small) and want people to know that even if they have to deny they speak Spanish. Why? Because US has a culture of telling people to speak only in English (theres history of descrimination against speaking spanish), so it's their way of saying, "look I belong to the US, I can speak English". To me its nonsense bc the more languages you speak the better. The man telling his story in the store about the lady speaking spanish then denying she speaks it is an example of an identity problem and/or has suffered racism before; therefore, she denies speaking spanish. However, it's a very small percentage, not everyone is like that and he shouldn't generalize bc as a mexican having lived in the US almost 50 yrs I can say not all Mexican Americans are like that and we do help each other especially by helping newcomers from mexico or other places. We've been there done that and understand their needs. So, in a way, interviewing someone whose never really lived there for his opinion was not a realistic judgment of mexican Americans vs mexicans. Also, some businesses prohibit employees from speaking spanish, they can actually get fired, so perhaps he misjudged when the employee was only trying to protect her job.

HI jj, The purpose of asking someone who has never lived in the U.S. and is a Mexican, as well as another who is a Mexican-American having lived in the states for a long time, and is now living here in Mexico, was to get/ show the different perspectives. Many times we don't understand why one thinks as they do because we don't bother to inquire.

Aren’t you afraid to be seen as arrogant Americans when you disrespect the local rules or customs? When you watch starting on 18 minutes in the local street market, all the natives around you are wearing masks but you don’t. It doesn’t really matter whether it is helpful or not to wear a mask - the locals are doing it, and you really stand out by being different.

Hi JPNY, Interesting you would come at us with this angle because my husband actually said "someone" would say something like this just to have "something" to point a finger at. Yes, you will see a number of people here in Mexico who will wear their masks outdoors (even walking around alone), and that is completely fine as it is their RIGHT to do so. We ALWAYS respect the locals not only by wearing our masks, but in all aspects. Now, we may not always have one on walking around in the outdoors/ fresh free flowing air as it is NOT mandated to wear a mask outdoors here in Mexico, again, it is one's CHOICE to wear one outdoors. If it were indeed mandated to wear one outdoors, we would ABSOLUTELY being doing so. Therefore, no, we don't believe "we are disrespecting the locals rules and customs" as you stated, and we definitely aren't "arrogant" people. Whoever takes the time to know us, will see that pretty quickly. Thanks for your comment.

@@WhyNotNow - I agree that being outside in open air is where you don’t need to mask. Especially if, as you wrote, masks are not mandated outside. But look around you. Even though the masks are not mandated, the locals are still wearing them. Doesn’t that offer some kind of hint about how the locals feel? Even if they are wrong, there is no need to be disrespectful.

@@jpny4750 Again, there are some that wear masks outside, and some who dont wear them outside. Please stop trying to incite drama. If you dont like our channel, feel free to gain value elsewhere. I'm done on this topic because clearly, you are upset about something else, and trying to incite negativity here which won't be tolerated.
