  • Are you wanting to move to Mexico? If the answer is yes, then we must ask ourselves what our main purpose is for moving to this beautiful country called Mexico, or Latin America in general. Is it the cost of living in Mexico? Is it obtain a better quality of life living in Mexico? Are you concerned about gentrification in Mexico (or inflation in Mexico)? Or, do you simply want to live a "luxury" lifestyle? These are questions that we do need to ask. Mexico is a beautiful, and very diverse country that has captured the attention of foreigners from the United States, Canada along with many other countries now more than ever...but why? Obtaining residency in Mexico is now being searched at a high volume, and for that reason, along with a comment we received, gave way for some introspection/ questions. If you are new to our channel, we have our temporary residency here in Mexico and have been living here since late 2020. For us, moving to Mexico was a great decision and that is why we are sharing our travels/ experiences with everyone. We share our personal mistakes, experiences, and love for the people, and the country on this channel but most importantly, truthful information (regardless if it aligns with the majority, or not). Hey Steven and Lisa Marie. My husband and I are moving to Mexico on May 3, 2022 because we are looking for a better quality of life. Where we live now (In Arizona) has high homelessness, drug addicts and shootings everyday. I am third generation born and raised in Hawaii so I have NEVER had to live under these conditions. I visited Mexico this past November 2021 for 10 days and my first expression is I immediately “Felt at Home”. Mexican culture is very much like the Hawaiian Culture, whereas, Mexicans lead their lives with the “Aloha Spirit”. The Aloha Spirit is giving of yourself without EXPECTING ANYTHING BACK. With inflation increasing by the day, here in the U.S., it is becoming impossible to survive on our retirement income. So with that said, we are moving mainly because of a better quality of life which includes financial stability, however, financial stability is NOT the primary reason.

      Aloha, I lived on the Big Island for nearly 20 years. I had to leave 16 years ago due to the high cost of living. I love and miss Hawaii. My still have friends and my older som there. Eventually, I wound up in SE Asia where Ive been ever since. I'll never return to live in the usa. Mexico was on our list last year, but many changes.in immigration and financial requirements. Where we now live, this country does not allow foreigners to own land or homes. That law keeps housing very afforfable. Where in Mexico can you rent a 2 bedroom, 2 bath house large back yard, air con, with all utilities included for less than $300usd? Aloha nui loa.

    My cousin had a Mexican Grandma, we used to visit her when I was 6-7 years old, She taught me some Spanish words. From that point going forward I was inspired to see the world and explore different languages... Germany and France were countries I visited and worked on learning language, but when I went to Mexico I found a warm inviting culture and the language came easier for me than German and French.. since a young age I have traveled to Mexico multiple times living there for months at a time.... I feel at HOME there! Now that my family has been raised and I am free to live somewhere besides the US or Canada, I am leaning toward Mexico... I DO WORRY that too many People are moving there... I had hoped it would be my secret :) LOL.... I remember a trip where I didn't see another Gringo for the first 3 months... it was only in the 4th month while visiting some historic areas in Mexico City that I first saw some Europeans... They were speaking German and another family were speaking French... So yeah... wish it would stay Sparsely populated with Gringos. ... I love that you are integrating into your community and learning not only the language but the Cooking culture... Best wishes!!

    We moved here because we were tired of the poor quality of life in the US. The divisiveness and materialism was just too much for us. We also do love the Mexican culture and want to experience more of it. I grew up surrounded by Mexican music and language in Chicago, and I always admired the families that I knew for putting their family first and enjoying life. However, I have to admit, we also chose Mexico because it was more economical so that I could retire earlier (although, it's not as insanely inexpensive as other RUclipsrs make it seem), and we like its proximity to get back to the States for family emergencies. We also have found that our health and wellness has improved immensely because we eat fresher from the local markets, spend more time walking, and focus on relationships.

    I think one issues locals have with foreigners is when a bunch of "expats" move into a specific area and gentrify that area. That is a big problem. Foreigners that really want to experience the real Mexico should be more curious and live amongst the locals and not people just like them. if you don't try learning the language and integrate into society then what are you even doing here? Another thing about Mexico, 98% of my money spent in Mexico is going to locals. I do NOT shop at big box stores. why make the rich richer? That's ALL you do in the US. Screw that. it's stupid. to keep empowering the 1% he!! naw!!! I KNOW when I spend money here I'm actually doing something that's good for my neighbor and that's the world I choose to live in.

    My Jamaican wife use to make what she called, "Rice and Peas." It was rice, coconut and black beans. She started with dried black beans, soaked them overnight then cooked them until they are soft. Keep the water and add the rice. Cook the rice and black beans together. The result will be a pink colored rice with black beans in it. Delicious.

    Can we talk honestly? We bought a second house in San Miguel de Allende 20 years ago. Five years later we sold our US house and our first house here and bought a much more expensive house in San Miguel and became permanent residents. Originally we visited and loved the city. We came with my wife's mother who we had already lived with for eight years and who had had a bad stroke and needed around-the-clock care. It was much easier and less expensive to get her care here. She died and we stayed. Home prices were about the same as Texas, everything else was much cheaper, particularly labor. We have had the same household help for 20 years. I had heart surgery for under twenty grand at Star Medica without insurance. I still need lots of medicines and help. We love Mexican culture but in all these things costs were the primary factor. We try to speak Spanish but my wife is much better than I.
    One of our younger workers illegally moved to Texas, with much walking and a coyote. He did not go for the culture, but for the wages. He does not speak English and would only learn if it involved higher pay. San Miguel has been deliberately trying to attract foreigners for more than seventy years. They have succeeded. Mexico passed laws making immigration very easy in order to attract foreigners and have been increasing the financial requirements for permanent residency only in the last few years. Speaking Spanish is not a legal requirement for permanent residency.
    People have many different feelings about immigration between the US and Mexico. The US needs people that are willing to do hard work. Mexico has welcomed us as retirees and made us feel very welcome. I love San Miguel and try not to go back. I did go back for a booster shot. I feel like coming home when I return here. I plan to live the rest of my life here.

    What is moving us to move to Mexico first is multiple elements.
    1. I am a cancer survivor and ready to make up the time I was down and bed bound.
    2. Both my husband and I are disabled Veterans. He served a lot longer than me.
    3. We feel that the food in Mexico is not tainted like we see in the USA.
    We have lived in Germany and different places in the world during the time we served. That bit us with the travel bug. Now our kids are hitting 18 looking at schools and such. For use we felt better for the 6 weeks in Mexico. My bones didn’t hurt as much.
    We know we can extend our budget live in a way that allows us to learn and explore all Mexico has to offer. The culture and the people were so welcoming and just pulled me in.

    personally, I didn't come to LATAM or CENTAM specifically to live luxuriously. My happy place wasn't in the US. My physical and mental health suffered there. Mexico's culture, gastronomy and the people oh and weather can't forget that are what's attractive to me. IF I didn't have USD and only had MXN, I would still choose Mexico over the US. Also, I feel MUCH MUCH SAFER in Mexico. In the US, there's so much discord and gun toting idiots. Other things I love about Mexico are the widespread availability of public transportation and the diversity of the environment. There's every kind of nature! Being in the Yucatan, I love learning more about the Mayan civilization too. The archeological remains are plentiful and I'll never get enough of that! But it's definitely not to live a luxe life. I eat like my vecinos and am very happy in a typical fraccionamiento. Im not on a "vacation". I'm just living life like all my neighbors are. Improving my Espanol and Maya.

    I had to make these additional comments because I wholeheartedly agree with you both. People shouldn't go to a place and try to convert it into the place you came from. Accept the standard of living and values in your new home and appreciate them. Living more simply with less stress and affordably surrounded by community minded respectful people is the goal. I agree with you. Extravagant people are ruining things with their unrealistic nonsense. You have the right idea don't veer from it. Beautiful.

    I plan to move to Mexico if they will have me. I am leaving the US regardless. I am a military retiree. My reason for joining the military was to travel, meet new people, learn about their cultures, and maybe the people I meet would want to learn about mine. I knew I was not going to get that if I stayed home, went to school, and started my career with the same people in my community. I want to continue my learning experience. That means me bending to their nature not them bending to mine. I chose Mexico because of proximity to my one and only child. I need to be able to get to my child quickly if the need arises. Also, I do not care to be lumpsum and put into a stereotype (I get put into a stereotype without blinking my eyes). Some of us want to live comfortably within our means because we have been struggling in our lives. To be able to do that, not hurt or affect someone else, and keep learning is a good thing.

    Wife and I have been coming to Mexico together for over 20 years and now have lived here full time for a few years.
    When you say fit into the culture , well there is no one Mexican culture, it varies per what part of Mexico to what economic structure of the area too.
    We live in a neighborhood where 90 percent of the families are Mexicans and only a couple of Canadians families and us.
    We bought a 14 year old house from the previous owner who was a retired general family doctor and a Mexican as was his wife.
    Our house as many in our neighborhood is two story, has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. Two bathrooms have only showers but one a garden tub, that is popular with what some call the middle and upper income people here. Also many have a garbage disposal and dishwasher too, just like in the States, we don't have the garbage disposal but we do have a dishwasher.
    All our nearby Mexican neighbors have swimming pools of various sizes but mostly small, we don't and just go to the beach.
    So, as you can see, even different lifestyles and cultures exist within the Mexican people. It's just a hard working middle income neighborhood where we live as I stated earlier, 90 percent Mexicans.

    • @WhyNotNow
      @WhyNotNow  2 года назад

      Hi Rod, You may be misinterpreting what was said...when we say "fit into the culture", it simply means don't come to Mexico as a foreigner and complain IF an apartment doesn't happen to have an oven, a dishwasher, an "open concept" kitchen, businesses don't open on Sundays, etc. These are just a couple of examples. As stated in the video, this applies to any country a person chooses to move to. It doesn't imply that such things (i.e. garden tubs) are not available at all, but in most cases, not as common unless the homes/ units were renovated, newly built, or of a more "affluent" / higher income families. But, like in the U.S. and many other countries, that is not the majority of people as most consist of regular working class population (some making very little, and others fitting into what is referred to as a "middle class" income category). Then, additionally, there are the higher income/ wealthier percentage of the population of course. Fitting into the culture (or melding) simply means trying to learn the language of where you live, associating, and learning about people from all walks of life, social/ economic backgrounds; rather than only gravitating towards situations, things, and people that seem to feel more "familiar", if you will.

    People go on and on about gentrification but seem to be ignorant of the fact that most of that is from the expanding middle and upper class in Mexico, NOT foreigners moving in. Sure, that might be true in a few places (looking at you Ajijic) and when the "takeover" does rarely happen, many locals benefit from servicing the needs of the "New money". As an example, I live in Zapopan (Guadalajara) in an upscale area with underground utilities and homes that range from $6m to $100m mxn. Every morning and evening when I walk my dogs, I see an almost endless stream of working class people (yep, you can tell here) walking to work inside of the gated communities, either as domestic help or helping to build a new home. The thing is, this is NOT an area that foreigners gravitate to, I NEVER hear native English spoken when I am out and about. The truth is that when people around the world, for all of human history, have achieved any form of financial success/stability, they look to improve their and their families standard of living. Expats that revel in living in "humble" neighborhoods are delusional that they are improving anything, they are just one more person living a low income lifestyle. People need to stop feeling guilty about having financial success and/or shaming those that have found financial success. If you want to help, spread your money around and enjoy the fruits of your labor/luck.

    • @WhyNotNow
      @WhyNotNow  2 года назад

      First of all, I do not appreciate you throwing pebbles calling "us", or anyone else who is concerned with real life issues, "delusional". You certainly wouldn't appreciate it if I said you sound like the typical clueless, selfish person who never had to experience any of the things you speak of so carelessly. Correct, foreigners "expats", coming to other countries aren't the ONLY reason for inflated pricing, gentrification is a real issue, and has always been present in this world. It exists in the U.S., and continues to occur even to the people you define as being "middle class/ upper middle class". Hard working class people are being pushed out of nice areas/ areas with close access to what are considered to be areas of "future value", due to inflated pricing. This NOT only pertains to Latin America, but ALL over the globe. There are "middle class" people who can't even afford rent, can't afford to purchase a modest home in many places (including the U.S., etc.) because no matter how hard they WORK to save, the prices are going up at rapid speed, and there is NO cap to the ridiculously high living expenses for what is considered a livable house, let alone an unlivable "shell". Greed/ selfishness is, and always will be prevalent as it is at the heart of many but rationized as being "human self preservation". To say that other people are "living a low income lifestyle" because they choose NOT to live, OR maybe don't HAVE the financial means to live in a "gated community" such as yourself, is just pure ignorance. If you think that is the way to make the world a better place, good luck with that notion and I hope for your sake that you never lose your $$ because you wouldn't know how to function/ live with the "majority of the regular folk"...you might see that as a real "life crisis" living with "us" "low income people, not making anything better, nor enjoying the fruits of our labor". You are right in that no one should feel guilty about having financial success, that of which was never implied however, one should feel guilty about living a life where the sole concern is self. Our channel is clearly not for you and that is completely ok with us; there are plenty of other channels that just show the "good life" which may be more suitable for you, and your lifestyle. Best wishes.
      En primer lugar, no aprecio que arrojes guijarros llamando "nosotros", o cualquier otra persona que se preocupe por los problemas de la vida real, "delirante". Ciertamente no apreciarías si dijera que suenas como la típica persona egoísta y despistada que nunca tuvo que experimentar ninguna de las cosas de las que hablas tan descuidadamente. Correcto, los "expatriados" extranjeros que vienen a otros países no son la ÚNICA razón de los precios inflados, la gentrificación es un problema real y siempre ha estado presente en este mundo. Existe en los EE. UU. y continúa ocurriendo incluso entre las personas que usted define como "clase media/clase media alta". Las personas de clase trabajadora están siendo expulsadas de áreas agradables/áreas con acceso cercano a lo que se consideran áreas de "valor futuro", debido a los precios inflados. Esto NO solo se refiere a América Latina, sino a TODO el mundo. Hay personas de "clase media" que ni siquiera pueden pagar el alquiler, no pueden comprar una casa modesta en muchos lugares (incluidos los EE. UU., etc.) porque no importa cuánto TRABAJEN para ahorrar, los precios están subiendo. a gran velocidad, y NO hay límite para los gastos de vida ridículamente altos para lo que se considera una casa habitable, y mucho menos un "caparazón" inhabitable. La codicia/el egoísmo es, y siempre será frecuente, ya que está en el corazón de muchos, pero racionada como "autoconservación humana". Decir que otras personas están "viviendo un estilo de vida de bajos ingresos" porque eligen NO vivir, O tal vez no TIENEN los medios financieros para vivir en una "comunidad cerrada" como usted, es pura ignorancia. Si crees que esa es la manera de hacer del mundo un lugar mejor, buena suerte con esa noción y espero por tu bien que nunca pierdas tu $$ porque no sabrías cómo funcionar/vivir con la "mayoría de la gente común"... podrías ver eso como una verdadera "crisis de vida" viviendo con "nosotros" "personas de bajos ingresos, sin hacer nada mejor, ni disfrutar de los frutos de nuestro trabajo". Tienes razón en que nadie debe sentirse culpable por tener éxito financiero, lo cual nunca estuvo implícito, sin embargo, uno debe sentirse culpable por vivir una vida en la que la única preocupación es uno mismo. Nuestro canal claramente no es para ti y eso está completamente bien para nosotros; hay muchos otros canales que solo muestran la "buena vida" que pueden ser más adecuados para usted y su estilo de vida. Los mejores deseos.

      @@WhyNotNow Your post came off, to me, as trying to “shame/blame” those foreigners who have chosen to live in Mexico and who have the ability to live a more comfortable lifestyle than the average “working class” locals. The fact is that ALL developing countries, including Mexico, need foreign investments to grow. All of Mexico benefits when more money is circulated amongst the population. A foreigner of means that moves to Mexico, who invests and spends freely actually is helping to grow the countries economy. Moving to Mexico with limited means does nothing to improve the economy, they spend on rent and food and that’s about it from what I can tell. And the infusion of US dollars through “remittances” (Mexican people working in the US and sending money back to Mexico) totaled almost 52 BILLION usd last year. Again, US dollars, earned in the USA and spent in Mexico HELPS Mexico instead of hurting it. The fact is that foreign money invested/spent in Mexico through foreigners moving to Mexico, remittances and foreign corporate investments is a major reason why Mexico now has the 15th largest economy in the world. If foreigners actually want to help the economy of Mexico, they will spend and invest. That is far from being selfish and to say otherwise is just plain naive.

    • @WhyNotNow
      @WhyNotNow  2 года назад

      @2 Wimpy You clearly misnterpreted our video. And, you and I already had this conversation about money being spent "helping the economy" in another comment/ video and I had very politely responded/shared my perspective on this NOT only as it relates to this country, but other countries throughout the world (U.S etc.). If you can recall, I stated that although that theory may sound good, the real money RARELY ever trickles down to the people that work the hardest/ need it most; they mostly get the crumbs.The people on top/ doing very well enjoying life are not bothered by that though. This is an undeniable fact and know it why...because we have personally lived in ALL areas throughout our lives and speak to people from ALL walks of life. We don't have concerns that we will "appear" as the "low income choosing lifestyle of people" you referenced above. I said all I care to say on this topic.
      Claramente interpretaste mal nuestro video. Y, usted y yo ya tuvimos esta conversación sobre el dinero que se gasta en "ayudar a la economía" en otro comentario/video y muy educadamente respondí/compartí mi perspectiva sobre esto NO solo en lo que se refiere a este país, sino a otros países en todo el mundo. (Estados Unidos, etc). Si puede recordar, dije que aunque esa teoría puede sonar bien, el dinero real RARAMENTE llega a las personas que trabajan más duro/más lo necesitan; en su mayoría obtienen las migajas. Sin embargo, a las personas en la cima / que les va muy bien disfrutando de la vida no les molesta eso. Este es un hecho innegable y sé por qué... porque hemos vivido personalmente en TODAS las áreas a lo largo de nuestras vidas y hablamos con personas de TODOS los ámbitos de la vida. No nos preocupa que "apareceremos" como el "estilo de vida de elección de personas de bajos ingresos" al que se hace referencia anteriormente. Dije todo lo que me importaba decir sobre este tema.

    That meal looks delicious guys! I was raised by Bajan parents and my mother often made stewed chicken. Lisa Marie, your green seasoning is very similar to mine but I usually add fresh thyme. We also wash our chicken with lime, as is the custom in the Caribbean. It's true that we pay a lot for prescription drugs in the U.S. and Canada, as well as dental work, etc., etc. Living wisely and frugally is what's important in my opinion. BTW, I came across another expat on RUclips who sold her home in Canada, purchased land in Baja I think?, for $20,000 and is building a tiny house on the property. Her story is interesting and she also seems to appreciate the quality of life she's creating for herself in Mexico. Her channel is called Blue Sky Sanctuary. Have a wonderful weekend guys!

    For a large group of people moving to Mexico RL is absolutely correct. For me, I fell in love with the country and its people when I stayed on a rancho for a summer when I was 12 years old. It was an experience that has stayed with me all my life. I have been to Mexico numerous times over the years always staying and eating where the locals live. Having lived in different places around the world I always return to Mexico and grateful for what it has given me. I have an extremely large group of friends in Mexico that I consider family. I have my permanent residency and look forward to living there full time when the time comes.

    In 2019 myself my husband and our children moved to MX from the US. To me the US was beginning to become very fragile, the gun violence, the division, the materialism and so much more pushed us to make our decision. To be frank what prompted us to begin to think about the move was the cost of living, we moved from Denver CO which is starting to become comparable to California in terms of gentrification and rise in housing costs. As we started to see what appeared to be a decline in the US our decision was made. Unfortunately due to a family loss back in the US we moved back recently (for a short period of time) we’ll be back spring of next year. I will tell you the 3 years we were there we met so many people that became family and our hearts now forever belong in MX. Before moving there I didn’t realize how much I would be affected positively by the people. Being here currently in the US feels so superficial and emotionally cold compared to the love that radiates in MX. In one of your recent vlogs Lisa, you teared up when talking about the people of MX, I know that intense feeling. I can’t wait to be back

Is actually surprised for locals like you guys mentioned in the video see some moving in from a country where you have more chances to make more money and have a regular financial live for us is like not usual today see ... But when people explain different reasons like in your case and what type of place to live you need and what you guys need to stay for the rest of you're life's it is completely understandable and is when everything change... So we see that you're working hard to fit in on Aguascalientes is why I'm so interested to help you guys because I 'm from Aguascalientes and there's many things you can learn not only about Aguascalientes, you will have a completely different view about Mexican culture... There are definitely two (or more) camps of US expats: the folks that want better weather and less expensive living costs who tend to band together to recreate their comfort zone - hence the gentrification - and the group that wants to experience and appreciate a different culture. I find it interesting that so many that begrudge that happening in the US (immigrant groups living in one particular area of a city) would think nothing of doing it themselves in Mexico! It takes all kinds to make the world go ‘round. ;)

    My mom is Mexican, so I became a Mexican citizen last year so I can move out there. I work remotely, so I can do my job form anywhere that has good internet. I speak spanish and it's close enough to the US that it wouldn't be hard to visit family in the states. Cost of living is way more affordable, I love the foods plus I have roots in the country.
    But the person that commented is right. Would I move to Mexico if the US was just as affordable as Mexico, probably not. But I think there is value in me going there. The money that I bring is being made from another country. I tend to buy from small businesses so I'll be helping in propping business owners up. I wouldn't be a burden on the government since I can support myself. Since I look like them I fit in. In fact in Ecuador everyone though I had a Mexican accent.

    Another thing that is appealing about Mexico is the reduction in regulations for every, little thing AND of mandated insurance. In the US, we insure our houses, rental homes, autos, medicine, pets, businesses, even our lives! We have to…or else…but I was reminded of the difference when another channel was visiting an elevated vantage point (I can’t remember which Mexican town). There was a very tall, stand-alone staircase to climb for a better view. There was no handrail, no warning signs, no disclaimers, no cameras, etc., etc. It really blew my mind and made me very aware of what the US has become. I want to show my husband the beauty of Mexico. And why not spend money in Mexico?? Why not support the local restaurants, tiendas, hotels, etc???

    In my opinion take what ever country you want .If you had everything you wanted in your country ,Good paying job good retirement plan good health insurance nice house good schools for your kids etc etc .Lets just say an average lifestyle not working pay check to pay check .I think most people would stay put in their country they would have their friends and family there they would know the language and culture and food and just normal things that they like.Why do some Americans move to Mexico ,they move there for a better life they can't afford to live in the USA off their $1,200 a month social security check .Why do some Mexicans come to the USA .For a better life they can't afford to feed their families on what salary they make in Mexico .it works both ways and in all ways people sometimes move to a different country for a better life,but in my opinion if they had many of these opportunities in their own country people wouldn't move as much .Of course their are other reasons why people move .Some people just want to explore different cultures and countries among other things.

    I loved this video! I've been thinking about a move to Mexico for a little over half a year. One of the things I've been thinking about is if my move would benefit the people there or take away. I think for people from the US especially we have to be aware that because we've held an inordinate amount of power and because our currency is the world reserve currency, that we are in a privileged position. That position won't last forever. It is one reason why our dollar goes so far vs other currencies right now. Overall I think that people who go and live like the locals are a benefit. I also think that the expat havens (with people from many countries including US) provide financial benefits to those communities along with financial drawbacks. Nothing is permanent but change, and change is both good and bad. If foreigners move in then things will change at least somewhat and Mexico has the final say about whether that change is net good or bad overall. Based upon recent changes in visa standards it seems like overall Mexico has decided that they prefer people with more money over less money.

    Of course Americans and Canadians move to Mexico because of its relative affordability, proximity to the U.S. and lax laws. Unfortunately, the large influx of expats into Mexico has its negative sides as well. For example, places with large expat communities, such as San Miguel de Allende in Guanajuato State and Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco State, have experienced an exodus of the native populations because of ever increasing costs for housing and services associated with gentrification. In addition, the arrival of foreigners to coastal areas of the Yucatan Peninsula, such as Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Cancún, etc., has resulted in an ecocide of epic proportions as the jungle and mangrove swamps are being destroyed at a breakneck pace to build more resorts, communites, and night clubs for not just tourists but for foreigners who want to own vacation homes in an exotic destination.

    I am an American and I want to move to Mexico because the politics here are getting really scary, and the mass shootings/terrorism are terrifying. I really think we are getting very close to a Civil War I want to get out of here to a safer place. I don’t feel personally threatened but the atmosphere is just too depressing for me. However, I have recently seen videos that talk about the changes in tourist visas, but that 180 days is no longer the rule and that some people have been thrown in prison for accidentally overstaying visas. Also, I can no longer meet the income requirement for a temporary residence. So I am rethinking moving to Mexico because I don’t think it’s possible anymore for someone in my low income bracket. I am 76, living on Social Security.

    I am not sure how much an MRI is in MX or US, but we just booked an ultrasound in MX - 900 pesos (so 45$). I paid $411 for same ultrasound 4 months ago in US.
    I don't know if in the scenario when US cost of living would be the same as in MX, if I would move to MX full time - at least not initially. What I know for sure is that I could not live WITHOUT going to MX at least 1-2 weeks a year minimum (aka like a vacation) - it is like coming up for air for us (we fill ourselves before going back into the stress). But the more we visit MX, the more we want to live there... so in the end I think we would end up in MX no matter what.

    My Father moved back to Mexico because his retirement pension and social security would go farther to sustain him into his old age and his brother that passed away left him a house in his will. All of the rest of his siblings still pretty much live there. I know that only my uncle (Tio) my Aunt (Tia) with my Father were the only one's that came to America in the 70's I'm the first born from my Father's side that was born in the USA. I wasn't born until the very end of the 70's. Exactly the last 2 weeks of 1979. I've been to Mexico three times to visit my Father's side of the family and we stayed in Jamay, Jalisco with my stepfather's family. We also visited my Mother's side of the family in Guadalajara. I have not been yet to visit my Father in Michoacan. He is originally from Mexico City. I really don't speak the language and my Father want's me to visit, but I hear so many stories and My Father assures me that everything will be ok; but whenever I have hesitation about anything. I do end up going with my gut feeling. About after the age of 14; I really didn't see him too much anymore and by the time we would reconnect. We really didn't have much to speak about. He's probably seen his grandchildren a hand full of times and now my children are adults, so yes I love my Father, but I think he focused more on his new family and his own life. I hope to see him some time when he comes back to the USA about twice a year, but that's really about it.

    After visiting Argentina and Peru I can honestly say I feel safer in Mexico, I remember when we landed in Peru, as soon as we got to the main area a lady that works in the airport said to us “tell your kids to put their phones away” that to me was unheard of in Mexico. I also saw lots of people jacking up people right in traffic while people were waiting for the light to change. In Argentina a group of 3 man came up to us while we were at a really famous cemetery, again at a cemetery and they came pulled out a knife and asked us to give up the camera and phones, thank god it was quick but they still got away with our camera. I’ve been to Mexico about 6 times and never had anyone come up to us and take anything even my kids when they were using their phones in public. With all that said cops are the fucking worst.

      @@WhyNotNow when and if you guys decide to go to South America you will see it for yourself, I’m not saying Mexico is perfect, as a matter of fact far from it, but at least most of the time in Mexico, people respect your belongings. In South America is a different story, as a matter of fact 2 months before we went down to Argentina an American tourist was stabbed 43 times for a camera, in Mexico if you mind your own business and don’t get involved with the wrong people more often then not you’ll be ok, not in South America. I always feel the reason why Mexico gets more attention is the fact that is the Neighbor of the USA but I can talk from experience and South America is worst, let’s not even talk about Brazil, I for sure will never go there.

    In the US, many working class will have to work until they die or be forced to consume Alpo as food staple! In Mexico, a good quality life can be had within the constraints of our grossly inadequate social security system to care for our old people who worked hard to support all of the freeloaders and welfare recipients that pervade our society. We move there for the reason that many from all Latin American countries move here, a better life.

    I agree with him 100%. I am Latina and I have an educational background in Spanish and LatinAm language and literature. Of course, I’m proud of and love my heritage, which is Spanish and Cuban. I also had a Mexican godmother and fiends from MX, Panama, Argentina, P.R., Colombia, Spain (where I’ve lived also) and many other countries. It disturbs me that the majority of Anglos that move to MX and other Hispanic countries do not bother to learn the language. They simply operate in their parallel anglicized universe expecting Mexicans or Latinos to adapt to them, which they do graciously and without complaint. Nor can American or Canadian Anglos even be bothered to make an effort to pronounce basic words or place names correctly. Yet they figure out how to purchase expensive properties, invest in or establish businesses, even gain residency and all without integrating into the culture. They are clearly exploiting the generous spirit of these Hispanic countries. Yet in the US and Canada there is a very strong expectation that Spanish speakers (and really just about any non-English speaker) is going to learn the language and assimilate. Period. Latinos are discriminated against in the US and ridiculed even when they speak English with an accent, even when they speak English better than most Americans. So I feel the attitudes of many Americans (especially) and Canadians is disrespectful and abusive. BTW I have spent many years studying and trying to decide where I want to live when I retire. I just knew that I wanted to be in a Spanish/Latino environment, immersed in the language and culture.
